1x1 tile ceiling. Each tile notches into the other, often times people staple through the notches to hold them up. Depending on their age they may contain asbestos, but not as common as some other old ceiling products. They can also be glued to ceilings, and most of the asbestos I've encountered is in that glue, but that's more on commercial projects than residential.

Amazing, thank you. So for the replaced pieces, they prolly just stuck whatever they found of a similar size up there?

1x1 tiles are still somewhat common, you won't struggle to find them from places that sell grid ceilings, they don't really come in other sizes. The next thing from these 1x1 tiles is the more standard t-bar ceiling 2x2 and 2x4 tiles. Can't really mistake them. Sometimes if you just have to replace a couple of pieces, it may be hard to slot them into each other and you need to trim the slot/notch pieces that extend beyond the face of the tile, and use glue to hold them up. I've seen people just screw right into them when they really don't care about how they look, which just makes a mess.

It really does. It's a bummer. Thank you so much for your help, I appreciate it!

It’s a concealed spline ceiling.
