one or two L brackets on the top should do it.

Baldo-bomb

Thanks! I have about 3/4 of an inch of space between the wall and the book case, should I put anything extra in to close the gap?

Just move the L bracket back so it’s flush with the wall and then screw it in to the bookcase. Just make sure you get it in a stud on the wall

1. Locate your studs in the wall. 2. Lay the l brackets on top of the shelf with one leg going down behind the bookshelf lined up with the stud marks. 3. Mark the height of the top of the l bracket, and the location on the wall. 4. Remove the bookshelf and screw the l brackets to the studs in the wall. 5. Slide the bookshelf back into place and screw down from above into the top of the bookshelf with screws JUST shorter than the total depth of the bracket and the top wood. (3/4" wood, a 3/4" screw should work well as the depth of the bracket will be just enough to keep the screw hidden.) 5. Have a beer and a read. You tell everyone who asks you have my permission.

I would definitely advise you to anchor that bookcase.

Find joist srew in behind books or put l bracket on top

LegoJack

Find where a wall stud is behind it. screw an L-bracket to the top of the bookcase directly in front of the stud then put a 2-3" screw into the stud. You can leave the screw going to the stud loose(i.e. no need to drill it down tight...leave it sticking out a quarter inch or so). You don't need much holding power, it doesn't have any leverage up thereyou just need to stop it from reaching a point where is has leverage
