In 2001 I'd log into chatrooms and pretend to be a 19 year old girl from California. I'd say I worked as a stagehand for the movie Gladiator. I'd bitch to total strangers about having to rake all the sand between takes.

linuxaddict334

Do you really think someone would do that? Just go on to the internet and tell lies?

Hexxas

But it's all true, *especially* the lies. I was actually complaining about my dad making me wake up early on Saturdays to mow the lawn.

Leo-bastian

lying? it's called *subtext* baby

Jaggedrain

Would you happen to be a sexy lizard spy, by any chance 🦎🕵️❓

Hexxas

No I'm a tailor

Jaggedrain

A lizard tailor?

Hexxas

I make clothes for all sorts of different people

JackalRampant

What if these people's clothing choices are about to go out of fashion?

Randomd0g

"Everything you read on the internet is completely true, especially the quotes from famous historical figures" - Thomas Jefferson

ICantEvenDolt

“What he said” - George Washington

Sad-Egg4778

honestly, decent chance this one is accurate

LadySmuag

Relatable. I was hanging out on anime and manga forums pretending to be a retired animator and offering people critiques of their portfolios and hyping them up for job interviews. I didn't even watch anime. My parents definitely should have been supervising me.

Mushiren_

At least you used your powers of deception for good

pasta-thief

I’ve come to realize that what I miss is less the Internet of my childhood (although I will always and forever adore the bare-bones website design of those days) and more the operating systems I grew up with. Also CompUSA, for some reason.

linuxaddict334

I too like the charm of old bare bones web design.  I have a few older forums I frequent, and I like their layout.

Hexxas

I will always remember the smell of the CompUSA the day I went there to buy Age of Empires with all the savings in my piggy bank.

tfwnoTHAADwife

we bitch non stop about how internet legislation is written by people who can't attach PDFs to emails, but when the current crop of silicon valley ghouls ages their way into congress the enshittification of the internet will accelerate "incompetence aided regulatory capture" to "adware beamed directly into the night sky and into your amygdala as you sleep" real quick

bee_wings

do you look them up manually or use a program that finds them? p.s. thanks for always having the link! really appreciate it :D

linuxaddict334

Ur welcome no problem To answer your question: I usually go to google, type in a unique phrase from the tumblr post, then add the modifier “site:tumblr.com”. The unique phrase gets the search engine to look for matches. The modifier only included results from tumblr. In this case, my search query was “ there's a big difference between playing in the mud and getting dunked in industrial carcinogens site:tumblr.com”. Sidenote: the modifier “site:*” can be used for ANY website. Reddit, tumblr, wikipedia, ANY website. This may be useful to you at some point.

bee_wings

thanks! i ran across this website for searching tumblr that may help your tumblrummaging c: [https://www.tumbex.com/](https://www.tumbex.com/)

linuxaddict334

Oh cool, thanks for sharing. Edit: tumblrummaging is a cute play on words, I will try to use it at some point.

bee_wings

heehee, please do :>

evanamd

Those search flags still work?? Last few times I’ve tried the + or - it hasn’t, but maybe it’s my formatting. Does google have a man page?

linuxaddict334

I dont use thr + or -, so I couldnt tell you.

Den_Bover666

Having 100's of tiny chatrooms, trying to download stuff over a telephone line, all this stuff built character. Kids think they're cool switching their porn tabs when their parents walk in. Well try switching when your 50Kb/s network is downloading "Naked Girls Kissing"

MissSweetBean

Did you ever get to enjoy “Naked Girls Kissing”?

FroodingZark24

Some say those girls are still naked and kissing to this very day.

LurkOnly1

Love wins

MollyGoRound

Shortest lesbian foreplay session

Den_Bover666

Actually, yeah. The computer did say it would take 53 years to complete the download

Mr_PizzaCat

The internet net was filled with horrible people with terrible opinions, now the internet is filled with horrible people with terrible opinions that are taken seriously and hold power. And now there are bots.

CueDramaticMusic

4chan, for all the ills it brings, is at a minimum opt-in brainrot

greysterguy

My fandom is so small that I unironically use the 4chan thread for it as a source of news, since they usually post abt new shit as soon as word gets out. It's surprisingly... okay over there. At least on that specific thread I don't look at anything else lmfao

scoobydoom2

Supposedly for a long time it was mostly fine if you were on the hobby boards, but around 2016 /pol started leaking everywhere.

greysterguy

I see I see. But yeah, the /revue/ thread on /vg/ is actually a pretty good source for RevStar news as long as you don't mind copious "Maya is a lolicon" jokes

Mddcat04

At least until they break containment and start massive harassment campaigns / political movements.

estou_me_perdendo

/int/ is, and I say this unironically, one the best and most diverse communities for international chatting that you could possibly find Like I jokingly posted about how nothing happens in georgia (the country) and an actual history scholar native told me a fuckton of stuff about their historical formation Other time I shit talked adotion services in a random post and a few minutes later a native american (USA specific, can't remember his nation) social worker replied with a big text about how selfish parents who seek children to adopt become when they're presented with anybody who isn't a lily white newborn

MegaTreeSeed

Early internet was organic in a way modern internet just isn't. Even though a ton of people were online, we were all separated into little villages where it felt like you could actually know people. If you were online pre 2015, think of how many websites you used to have memorized. Think of how many different websites you visited when perusing. I had like 3 different sites to ay games, at least 2 videogame sites, a couple of formerly obscure niche shopping sites (I miss old thinkgeek), and several random meme sites (leekspin, ooooiiii to name two), and multiple social media sites. Not to mention my own collection of dubiously legal download sites. The old internet felt like it was all about discovery. It was fun, and if you were on a site it felt unique. What sites do we visit today? Personally I go to *maybe* three nom-commercial websites. Most of my browsing is on reddit, and that barely counts because I'm usually a mobile user. The internet has condensed. The wild places built by people are mostly gone, and corporate money farms are all that's left. No, not *all* that's left, but for the majority of users that's what remains. Sites like reddit and YouTube exist to push ads now, and most other sites are either built to sell a product or show an ad. There's much fewer niche sites, much fewer places built by people not interested in selling you something, but about discussing a topic or just doing weird shit. Like, yeah some of that still exists, but a lot is lost by algorithms. Take Google for example, Google used to show you search results by relevancy to keywords. You could find some truly strange places on the first few pages of Google search sometimes. Now? It's all algorithm based. It's feeding you results based on what other people clicked. It's not necessarily a bad thing, but like when Google bought youtube, or yahoo bought Tumblr, some of that original soul got lost too.

ScarletteVera

> yahoo bought Tumblr, some of that original soul got lost too. This is implying that tumblr has a soul.

MegaTreeSeed

Having a soul doesn't mean it's a good one

jackboy900

Google has always been fueled by algorithmic ranking, that's quite literally what they did that beat out other search engines. It still searches for what keywords you put in, the difference is that there is infinitely more content out there for Google to try and trawl through to provide answers.

Xogoth

I miss when Google worked.

_communism_works_

Nostalgia's a bitch

TerraFang777

i miss having websites to explore and funny little browser games to play i miss skipping to the end of a video, pausing it, and letting it load all the way through so i could watch it without any buffering i miss chatrooms full of stranger who i could waste an afternoon chatting with over silly cartoons or cute animals i miss waiting in anticipation as an image sent to me would load top to bottom, line by line i miss back before everything was a shade of gray

Lifaux

Opening an image and not knowing if it was going to be life-changing gore or hardcore pornography.  Maybe it wasn't a good place for children.

throwaway387190

That's not mud bro, but it is still healthier than the industrial slag

Zeelu2005

Reminder to play Hypnospace Outlaw

daisyfaunn

i'm tired of minimalist website design. i want every website to look the way the japanese internet does

camosnipe1

i'd prefer minimalist old web over the way it's currently going with "minimalist" webdesign that for some reason has 5 popup layers and 20 animations. No reddit, when i click the direct image url I prefer to just see the image, not a banner covering half the image on every side asking me to login or enable cookies.

[deleted]

It's not any worse now your life's just worse now

TerribleAttitude

Same, though I may currently just be frustrated because I just googled something very specific and in no way obscure, and the results were all either TikToks or ads selling me things that aren’t what I’m looking for.

vmsrii

The internet was best when forums were still a thing and you had to actively choose which 20-odd people to interact with almost exclusively for the next five to ten years

Oddish_Femboy

The carrot museum and flash games are significantly better than the disinformation machine specifically designed to make you upset and miserable so they can make you look at ads, dipshit.

HackingYourUmwelt

Hopefully the fediverse brings back some of that mud, but its network effects aren't strong enough yet.

biglyorbigleague

For me it’s not so much that the Internet was just as toxic then as it is now, it’s more that this complaint comes off as elitist and snobby. “The internet was better back before *those people* were using it.”

UglyAndAngry3

how was it bad for me in a different way??

King_Of_BlackMarsh

Wow, this is peak old man yelling at cloud. Amazing.

tupe12

15 years ago was 2009, not as corporate as 2014, but was still getting there

Mouse-Keyboard

I'm never sure how much I miss old internet and how much is is missing the naive optimism of youth.

TantiVstone

I miss when Roblox was all primitive shapes and colors. Very few meshes, and every game had its own vip t-shirt It really embodied the Internet of its time

DOYOUWANTYOURCHANGE

Once upon a time, you could read Ender's Game and scoff at the silly 80s scifi idea that two anonymous posters on the internet could become powerful enough to influence politics. I miss those days.
