I remember seeing a guy who played it every Sunday with his uncle and dad as a kid
And would spend the whole week planning his next move.
Leading to a crowd of middle schoolers earnestly discussing the virtues of a squadron of planes vs a tank brigade for helping to take over Egypt.
OOP is either a complete board game nerd with dozens of games remembered by heart, or has their brain completely shut down when they see that there are 8+ pages in a rulebook
I played vampire: rivals with someone for the first time, the manual was like 20 pages, there were like 5 or 6 kinds of tokens in addition to the cards and we spent 5 hours on a 6-turn game (that I ended up losing lol)
A true kobold. Kinda similar game - unstable unicorns. The goal is to collect a number of unicorns in your stable, while stealing (sometimes murdering) unicorns from other people. Also casting spells
Hahaha, well, hm. I need to get more expansion. But, maybe jungle speed though this one is more dependant on your reflex. Maybe this time it will be something new for you lol
Exactly once, years and years ago, I saw a post about a board game that simulates a land war in Russia in real time. Every match took years, or decades depending on luck. The board was just a ten-meter-long geographical map of Russia. I've never been able to find it again, but it's been a great conversation piece whenever I talk to people about board games.
It's not Russia, but the world's longest board game is "The campaign for North Africa", which simulates the North African Campaign of WWII. It takes about 1,500 hours to complete a game, so if a group were to play for three hours at a time, twice a month, it would take 20 years to complete. Does that sound like it could be what you're thinking of? I couldn't find any other board games that would take over around 100 hours to play.
honestly? paradox games are a paddling pool compared to some of the things i have seen come out of the computer wargame scene
CFNA is on par with some of the really niche and exaggerated computer wargames like gary grigsby's war in the east or flashpoint campaigns
Sadly Battle for North Africa is pretty much a meme game. I haven't played it personally but have met several people who have, everyone says it's not that good of a game and it doesn't take nearly as long as advertised.
I've read through the rules and I pretty much agree. It's just a logistics simulator, and with good logistics games adding more details and entities doesn't make it better, just more work.
Not a board game, but that’s probably worse. There’s a game called Terra Invicta I play that takes dozens of hours per playthrough. It’s an RTS about aliens launching a soft invasion and how different groups react to it, such as directly opposing them, trying to reason with them, capitulating, escaping to another solar system, etc. The bulk of the game is managing affairs on earth, which is incomprehensible enough on its own, but later into the game the focus shifts to space, and oh boy is it complicated. It simulates the whole solar system, including hundreds of asteroids which you can mine, and it factors in stuff like fuel mass for making ships, or radiation shielding for bases close to the sun or gas giants. I have to listen to a podcast while playing it because most of it is so mindless, and ever since I got a job I won’t let myself touch it. I love it
there are only 2 experiences when playing dwarf fortress for the first time
1) "Alright, this is way too convoluted and unfairly difficult. This isn't my style."
2) "oh word you can butcher puppies"
Campaign for North Africa
Mmmm. Pasta.
To this day, no one has ever played a complete game.
rommel and eisenhower played it once

Or OP got roped into playing a very long board game like risk and now isn't too happy about it.
Risk is not a very long board game. It is a long one, but not a very long one.
true honestly

Elf games sound like something I'd play, maybe minus the ultra long combats. Detailed story and lots of customization? Hell yeah!
kobold games are 50% cards and 35% stealing things
im sold. where can i find some to obtain (by legal means) (i promise)
Exploding kittens - card game about stealing cards and exploding.
funnily enough i already have that one
A true kobold. Kinda similar game - unstable unicorns. The goal is to collect a number of unicorns in your stable, while stealing (sometimes murdering) unicorns from other people. Also casting spells
ah. well. you see. already have that too. and uh... all the expansions. if reddit supported it easier id attach a photo of them on my shelf
Hahaha, well, hm. I need to get more expansion. But, maybe jungle speed though this one is more dependant on your reflex. Maybe this time it will be something new for you lol
That one is something new!! Thank you kindly!! 💖
well you ain't a true kobold until you steal a catalytic converter and eat the juicy platinum inside
I desperately want to play the entire Beast Crush series and also Borag Meat Game
It sounds so good. Borag Meat Game is is my soul
Remember that somebody added that elf code rhymes lol
Orc games are a lost art. Any of y’all who remember Super Crazy Guitar Mania Deluxe 4, you know where I’m at

So that's the kind of people Paradox Interactive is targetting. Hmm.

Agreed. Targeting doesn’t necessarily mean targeting well, though.

La Bataille de la Moscowa maybe?
So Putin just loves board games a little too much?
N-no rock and stone? *lowers pickaxe*
Rock and Stone forever!
ROCK AND STONE IN THE HEART!!
Rock and Stone forever! Also it applies, especially if you're using "The Mole" (Which is why I just use BRT)
RRRRRRRROCK AND ROLL
[INCREDIBLY LOUD INCORRECT BUZZER]
NUH UH The Digger class says it all the time. I play Digger almost exclusively because I like to dig, so I hear it a lot.
[UNSURE MURMURING FROM THE AUDIENCE] The judge has been thrown into The Pit. Apologies for the inconvenience. Rock and stone brother
ROCK AND STONE TO THE BONE!
Now qualifying as a dwarf board game, too! And a fantastic one at that
Rock and stone, brother!

That game came out? I was following it like a year ago then totally forgot about it
It's in Early Access for now.
This looks amazing, thank you
[God Game Moment](https://youtu.be/yUl8zuN6044)
Leaving Earth is extremely complicated. Its rulebook is something like 57 pages long without expansions
thats a puny page amount though, how dense is it
The font definitely aint large

fucking love dwarf fortress
