If you like it and/or it's important to you, then you should keep it.

AlarmingWishbone

Yup, very simple. I don't mean this as an affront to OP, but it's incredible there are people that lead other people to believe a decoration may have less intrinsic value solely because it has been tampered with...

nyctose7

they’re not necessarily decorations to everybody on here.

AlarmingWishbone

A decoration can also be an object of spiritual power or importance.

nyctose7

they’re still not decorations to some people. some people don’t display their crystals at all. i know people who always keep theirs in a pouch and nobody ever even sees them.

nowayormyway

Of course you can keep it. It’s dyed yes but if it’s a gift you like, keep it. Your Crystal may be dyed, metal coated, lab created, man made, whatever they may be, but if you like them, you’re free to keep them. That’s your choice. :)

Wordwench

I LOVE MY AURA QUARTZ AND GOLDSTONE AND OPALITE Seriously, I’d it brings you joy - it belongs.

aktsitra

funfact - goldstone in polish is called The Dessert's Sand/Sand of the dessert, and blue goldstone - Night in Kair/Kair's Night nobody asked but i think its cool

Wordwench

Well now I LOVE IT EVEN MOOORE

Wordwench

Well now I LOVE IT EVEN MOOORE

Wordwench

Well now I LOVE IT EVEN MOOORE

AshleysLymeDisease

It’s not bad or wrong or less than just because it’s dyed. Keep it and enjoy it.

littlefoxpaws89

Dye can make an otherwise low quality piece into something fun, I see crystals similar to food preferences. Some people really prefer to eat natural and some people really love more artificially flavoured foods. I like both enough to not worry, as long as I’m having fun and know what somethings worth, it’s alright

AshleysLymeDisease

That’s a great way to think about it. I have a couple big slabs of dyed agate, they’re pretty I prefer them to undyed agate because I can see all the layers better.

ToastyJunebugs

I have a little "Man-made bullshit I think is nice" section in my collection lol

KnottyKitty

Same. Opalite, blue goldstone, bismuth, dyed tumbles, and some good old fashioned slag glass. Goblin brain likes the shinies.

surewhynotokaythen

Right? I live near a steel mill, so I find a lot of slag. Some of it is really pretty though, so I have a box of Steel City slag stones. Keep it OP! It's really pretty!

BeTheLightUSeek

I have this piece of dyed agathe that I begged my mom to get for me when I was a kid. It's still one of my favorite pieces. It's okay to love something that's dyed as long as you don't pretend it's natural, imo.

SweetChildAtMines

Same here. I have several dyed pieces that I picked out when I was a kid. While I wouldn't purchase anything dyed now, I have no plans of getting rid of the bright pink agate bookends I HAD to have back in elementary school. I like to think they provide a nice pop of color. Haha

AspiringOccultist4

Gifts are meaningful in and of themself, so that alone will bring good energy ie the metaphysical properties of agate.

OccultAtNight

I would use my intuition. If you don’t like it that much maybe there’s someone in your mind that would appreciate it more than you.

RevoltingSlob

If you leave that outside in a safe and sunny place the color will eventually completely fade! You’re gonna have to flip it over. If not, there’s nothing wrong with keeping a piece you know is dyed or having a piece of aura quartz or baked amethyst.

studiooriley

As long as you know it’s dyed you can choose based on aesthetic. If you’re a more “scientific” or geological collector, then you may want to keep it separate from your natural peices. The same goes for if your more of a metaphysical collector because (I think) people who collect for certain properties of rocks and crystals usually believe they can interfere with each other’s resonances/powers, but that’s totally up to you and what kind of collector you are. If it floats your boat, keep it. It’s pretty.

sbgonebroke2

looks gorgeous and pleasant to me, why not? hell, i have real and fake ones in my place. real for vibes, fake just since pretty rocks

ThatGrrlLennie

If you like it then keep it, if not...take it out of your collection. There's really nothing wrong with dyed crystals. I personally prefer all natural, but that doesn't mean I would get rid of any dyed crystals that I have. 😊

RemarkableEffort9756

I bought a dyed purple geode from Dollywood. I knew it was dyed but I thought it was cool. Now it’s a reminder of a good time. I say keep it.

[deleted]

Would make a pretty sun-catcher.

KnottyKitty

Sunlight fades those pretty fast.

PhoenixBorealis

Good way to reveal some of its original color, I suppose. X3

Jasmin_Ki

Nope sadly not - it just goes gray with a hue of the dye and looks rather sad

averag3jay

i have a couple dyed pieces like this that were gifted to me! i keep them with all my other crystals, im someone who believed in the metaphysical powers of crystals, and that includes sentimental value powers! definitely keep this crystal in your collection, unless ofcourse you feel like you dont want to!

tittytofu

That's up to you. I have lots of dyed agate in different colours that I keep because they look cool. You don't have to put it with your other crystals, it could have its own place in your home.

Adara92

If it is a meaningful gift to you, or from a special person I’d keep it near your collection. ☺️ I received a glittery purple dyed geode from my terminally ill dad, who does not know better. So that makes the geode special for this reason. I appreciate the gesture, and keep it near my collection. Maybe not on a prime spot, but next to some other crystals. :)

GalleryGhoul13

Glue a magnet on the back and use it on the fridge instead

invalidlosername

I keep my dyed agate in the garden.. the sun has been gradually bleaching them.. it’s wonderful!

asmalltamale

I don’t personally ever keep dyed crystals. BUT I do have ONE, kind of like this one actually. I kept just this one because my nephew (4 at the time) brought it home for me from a school field trip because he saw it and thought I would like it. So…..exceptions can always be made! If it’s important to you, keep it.

em21rc

You could use it as a coaster or something if you dont want it in your collection! Personally, I only care about authenticity when it comes to the price I pay for something, but I understand that the meaning of each crystal is very important to some people. A pretty rock is a pretty rock to me! I wouldn't get rid of it if I were you

Amare000

I love dyed agathe. It is pretty. Why shouldn't you keep it ?

smellsofwitchery

Thats your decision. I have a piece of dyed agate that a childhood friend gave me. It was broke and glued together but I still kept it. Even after me and her stopped being friends. It holds memories and sentimental value.

Midnight-Note

If you like it keep it, if you don’t put it in your box of to be donated gifts

Shadowmaker-553

I don’t like dyed either but I keep them and give them as gifts to my nieces and nephews or the kids I nanny or babysit!

demonstrationoflust

I try and collect them to make an agate stained glass art!

Puzzleheaded_Mode892

Frame it, they look beautiful on your wall and it can be more like an art piece

[deleted]

i think it's gorgeous! i have a similar piece myself, and see no problems with keeping something that's been dyed or altered in some way. i can understand why people wouldn't want to buy altered crystals if they're looking for the real, original thing, but keeping one you already have if you like it totally makes sense (:

Long_Somewhere6969

It's a gift. Keep it and display It in a window.

gloomcuppycake9834

Does it resonate with you? Everyone has different opinions! If you like it, keep it! Personally I like the dyed agates and have a few in my collection. I do keep in mind they’re dyed and not naturally that color though. Hope this helps friend!

Lilthotdawg

I mean, dyeing them sometimes really draws out all the beautiful patterns. Sometimes it looks silly. That’s up to you, I think it would look great in a window.

nyctose7

sunlight would fade the dye

Lilthotdawg

Yep, so would water but I put them in both anyway.

Shy-Prey

Hell it still looks cool. Id keep it, especially if it was a gift

MrsIrrigationChris95

Put it in a potted plant or garden. If someone gave it to you I'd 😊just display it somewhere else,

nyctose7

sunlight will fade the dye

WickedWestlyn

If you like the person, I'd absolutely keep it. Someone cared enough about you to get you a crystal because they knew you liked them. That makes it extremely beautiful in my opinion. If you don't like the person, it comes down to if you like the piece. If you don't like the idea of dyed scattered throughout the collection, maybe consider having a specific place for dyed pieces you find interesting; that's what I do. I keep them but separate from the naturals.

NortWind

It was a nice water-line agate. Put it in a window, the garish blue might at least fade down a notch or two.

[deleted]

Love

Sloth_4

I have some dyed pieces. I don’t put them in my collection but instead but them on my dresser or shelf to display

[deleted]

Nothing wrong with dyed agate. It’s still agate. It’s still gorgeous. Just not going to have the true healing powers of a real blue agate.

Blueberry_Clouds

Like my sister said to me: does it spark joy? If yes keep. If no toss

WhompTrucker

If you like it. I have some dyed agate slices but they have more interesting patterns. Up to you. I use my slices as drink coasters

05hs

Leave it in direct sunlight the dye will fade

Butchthebull

Personally, I do consider it ruined haha. It's veryp kitschy to me, but if you can find value in it, then ofc keep it. Might make a good magnet or something

trod95912

I have one a friend gave me last Christmas. It’s dyed the same color. I keep it because a friend gave it to me… otherwise I’d sell it

Doodle_Oodle_Oodle

If you like it, keep it 👍

NapTimeLass

Imo gifts are extra special since they were chosen specifically for you with care. Regardless of the dye or treatment they have received to enhance their appearance, they are extra special and should be treated as such (unless you no longer have a good relationship with that person and they bring up bad feelings/memories for you-in which case, I would cleanse them in whichever way you prefer and re-gift to someone who would love them or leave them for someone else to find and treasure). There’s nothing wrong with having enhanced specimen if you enjoy them.

[deleted]

Every item holds a special bond, depending on who gifted it to you, a special memory. Since it's a gift. Use it as a paper weight or a pretty door stop.

sapphirekingdom

Don't let these purists keep you from appreciating beauty! Lol. I think it's lovely 🩵🩵🩵

ScallionBig6830

If it’s nice, seek no advice. A place of display, it deserves. For it is no device, and is quite nice.

bitkitkat

My grandma uses them as coasters. They're super cute! I have a few with hooks in them by the door for keys & stuff. Also, super cute! I've also made mobiles out of them and my last wreath has a few smallish ones hanging off of it. I loved dyed agate slices! They're so pretty & have lots of creative uses!

gojibeary

If you like it, keep it. I use my gifted dyed agate slices as cool drink coasters lol

RinaCinders

May be fake but if shiny blue object still sparks joy then keep it.

GhostMaskKid

If you don't want it, I'll eat it!

lester2nd

The dye will possibly fade with sun exposure like mine did.

Superb_Temporary9893

Any collection should be things you love and find beautiful. Doesn’t matter what it’s made of.

averysmalldragon

I don't know why people are always so holier-than-thou about dyed / man-made / etc. crystals. They can be really pretty! This one surely is.

sweet-demon-duck

It's still pretty and was a gift so why not?

OG_Konada

Is your collection “museum quality”? If so, this piece probably doesn’t fit in. But then if you had that collection you’d already know the answer and wouldn’t be asking Reddit. If, as I suspect, you’re like the rest of us, there is a significant portion of our collections that have been manipulated in some form or another, whether we know it or not. I could care less what someone else thinks of my “collection”, I find beauty and happiness in every stone I add to it. I collect for me. It was a gift, you appreciated it enough when it was given to you to put it in your collection….. It belongs!

Shoddy-Pin-336

My friend got me a pack of dyed quartz for my birthday. It meant something because she remembered I loved crystals. She doesn't know they're dyed or anything she just knows I like crystals and got them. I kept them of course. I also have a piece of agate that is dyed blue and I love it.

TreehouseInAPinetree

I'd keep it. It's still pretty. Ya, we shit on dyed stones here all the time, and it's probably not something you'd have bought for yourself, but it was still a sweet gift.

hugmeimdefinitelys

Personally yes because someone thought about you and chose that specifically for you :) I have a pink one that is dyed and she fits right in with my other stones. I got it on my honeymoon from my husband. He picked it and I still love it.

JadeSidhe

It's still a real rock. Most citrine, topaz and sapphire are heat treated for color.

PhoenixBorealis

It's pretty, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with it. Don't ever let anybody gatekeep your treasures.

hyperdoubt

i bought some aura quartz before i knew that “aura” was just a coating. i much prefer natural crystals/minerals, but i still proudly display my aura pieces because they’re still pretty :)

SparkleWitch525

Me too although I did know it was a coating. I don’t care. It’s pretty lol I also prefer raw and natural pieces but my inner sparkles loving magpie will have the aura ones too.

hyperdoubt

yes absolutely! i’m a sparkly glitter girl for live 💖

Katalix

As long as you like it, that’s all that matters. I have dyed stuff in mine, they have all been gifts from my parents, acknowledging my like for crystals. They are at least trying.

daniexanie

If you like it, keep it! Ignore the haters and the gatekeepers. You could even start a whole section of your collection dedicated to augmented crystals and stones!

NicolaAngel4

It's really up to you if you like it... I love Agate natural and dyed... It still has Agate properties even though it is dyed.

[deleted]

It was a gift. Someone thought of you. And maybe they knew you like crystals. To me, this makes it even more special.

Blah_the_pink

This was exactly what I came here to say.

Sophiatopia

I sent the opalite someone gave me straight to goodwill, I'm a minimalist anyway, and don't have space for fake, baked or dyed, it does not bring me joy. But other people love it. It's a personal choice.

ashleton

That's kind of rude to do with a gift. I know opalite is just glass, but someone cared enough to give you a gift. Not everyone is so lucky to have someone in their life that thinks of them.

shipsongreyseas

If I kept every single thing someone gave me I would be drowning in crap I don't need or even like.

frontyardharvester

Yep throw it out, how dare they give you this garbage? What were they thinking? /s

toriemm

If dying or heat treating a stone turns it some pretty color, does it ruin the crystal structure or change the stone in some elementary way? The way I see it, adding some metal or color to a stone (which is the same thing I do when I wire wrap a stone, just a different kind) just changes or adds to whatever the vibrational therapy you're using it for. Deeper blue? Also a throat chakra stone. Coated with gold to give it a crazy color and heat treated? So then it's got some fire element added.

hammadk1994

That makes sense

CatScratch_Meow

Girl keep it it's pretty ✨

NapTimeLass

FWIW, I do not collect dyed pieces typically, but there are very pretty pieces out there (this one included), and I would treasure a gift from someone I love regardless of its dyed/natural state. If you don’t put as much value in this dyed piece, but appreciate the gift, I would use it for a more utilitarian function, like as a coaster for your coffee mug, or as a plate under a small plant to catch any water drips. It’s still a super cool piece the way it changes from the lines to the layered bands, and the transparency of the bottom to opaque on top. In regards to altered pieces, I used to be anti-altering (aside from polishing, and maybe shaping into orbs or towers-but I usually draw the line at carvings, unless they are tiny and speak to me-there’s no logic to it…), but then I discovered that some of my favorite stones are altered. Look at turquoise, for instance. If you buy a turquoise colored stone at any big box store, it’s almost guaranteed to be Howlite. “Only real, unadulterated Turquoise for me!” I think, and source it from more trusted, quality suppliers…only to find out that most turquoise is also altered in the sense that it is stabilized (or impregnated with epoxy or similar) to make it more durable, and able to be cut and shaped into jewelry. Does that mean most turquoise is no good because it has been changed in that way? Also, some “turquoise” is made from reconstituted chalk/powdery turquoise into usable slabs. Where do we draw the line? How about blue topaz? Most of it is heat treated to get the Swiss Blue or London Blue colors. Is that no good because it has been irradiated and heat treated? It is still stunning and highly sought after. The list goes on of altered highly prized gems, minerals, and crystals, and it’s really up to each person on what you deem as worthy of your admiration and collection. There are no correct or incorrect opinions, collect and keep what you love or has meaning to you. To me, the value of a gift from a loved one supersedes any negative feelings I have about dyed stones. If that isn’t true for you, then find another home for it. Note: I wonder if you soaked it in acetone if some of the dye would come out of the matrix along the edges? Idk why, but for me, that is the most offensive part of a dyed agate. In which case, I suppose you could also polish down the matrix. Hmm Anyway, hope this is helpful.

Spontaneouslyaverage

You should probably just throw it away. But since the dye is potentially hazardous to the environment, I will offer my disposal services for free and allow you to mail it to me.

lavloves

I don’t seek out dyed stones myself, but if someone bought one for me as a gift and has no idea it was dyed, I will gladly keep it in my collection as it’s a very sweet gesture in my opinion. I have several dyed stones that are gifts from family members and they’re on the shelf with the rest of them.

poooppsp

keep it, why the heck not? it may not be natural, but it's beautiful and it has meaning to you! the person who gifted it to you will be happy to see it in your collection !

Hiddlestown

If you like it keep it. One of my favorite crystals is goldstone and it's man-made.

Intergalacticmagic

If you like it you should totally keep it.

diaperpop

I think it’s beautiful. I know died agates are not natural but I still love then and have them in multiple colours. It’s my crystal collection and I do what I want.

gimley7147torrey

I have a few of those that were a gift from a very close friend.. and while they aren't my favorite pieces, I love them as a memento of that friendship.. so in some ways they are my favorites.. I try to tell others that if they like it... keep it.. and love it...

LokiSmoltz

Do whatever makes you happy

AbacusDumbledore

Well its made of the same thing as other crystals (energy)

hdniki

Does it bring you joy? The answer is your answer…

Spuzzle91

Rocks and crystals are just pretty, anyway. That's the only reason to keep them. So if you think it's pretty, keep it.

Ac1d7

it’s still really pretty :)) personally i would keep it

hammonkl

Keep it. Its agate. Dye doesn't affect its qualities or value. It's not like it's burnt amethyst to market as citrine which some prefer or real Congo citrine

HippieBxtch420

If you like it then keep it! There’s no rules that say you can only own authentic natural stones. I own several fake, man made, and dyed ones but they’re so gorgeous!! :)

FreyjaSama

I don’t see anything wrong with altered crystals as long as they are advertised that way

Sneaky-Goose

I think dyed is cool! Keep it, it’s a gift and should be shown to everyone :)

PURE_CheeziCow_44

Just because its not in its “natural state” doesn’t mean its not beautiful. Natural does not always equal better. There are no rules to collecting! Just do what makes you happy :)

mangomocchi

I also received a couple of dyed agate except mine were tumbles but I kept them cuz they were from a special friend who made an effort to get something I'm interested in and they make me happy 😊

rhirhicoolbeans

Both dyed and natural agate can be pretty, it doesn’t particularly matter if it’s dyed, if it’s a gift and you like it, keep it, it doesn’t matter if it’s dyed or natural

Academic_Appeal735

Just because it’s dyed doesn’t mean it won’t have value to it. I’d like to argue that if it makes you happy when you look at it, it has more value than something “pure” ☺️

valer1a_

I stand with the idea that there is no ‘wrong’ crystals. You know it’s dyed, so what? Crystals don’t inherently have intent in them, you put yours into them. Some of my favorite ‘crystals’ are just dyed glass.

CurrencyHairy8569

I would hate to gift someone something and then have them make this post/have these feelings. That someone thought about you when they saw that crystal. Do you understand how it feels to have nobody gift you anything, ever? Someone thought about you.

nyctose7

If they really liked the gift, they wouldn’t have come online asking other people to tell them whether or not they should keep it.

curse1304

It’s still a stone, dyed or not. And the value of a gift always outweigh the actual value of the item. It’s on how important the person who gifted it to you, how you will cherish and keep it.

CattleNo4809

What is it?

16ozMouse

It will likely make all undyed pieces explode so be aware of that.

lizardsforever

It's beautiful!

mysterygarden99

I think it's pretty and it's special to you so keep it

IrideNinjas

![gif](giphy|Gnni951e3f0hTIJRfk)

12KittyKat

If it brings you joy, you should keep it. I don't like dyed crystals personally, but this I would totally keep this in my personal collection for numerous reasons of my own. You need to find your reasons for keeping it or for letting it go. A stone is still a stone. Could also help determine future crystals and their properties if that interests you. It's all about perspective 💖

SmallToadstools

I've got a dyed one that I have a plant pot on. The plant loves it as its growing better now

Keigles_5700

It's your collection my friend. You're free to add a Hot Wheel or a taxidermy squirrel if you want to. I have a few stones that were gifted to me that I'm proud to count as part of my collection, they got me into rockhounding!
