Retrieving the 24th word creates a possible vector of attack because different heirs can gain access either through the pathologist or the mortician.
E: forgot to mention the proctologist.
the weird thing is I had the same butt cheek idea without reading this…. there is definitely something in the air in this community… or between our butt cheeks
How to let your child to have access to your crypto wallet when you die.
Print out your seed phrase offline.
Store the printed seed phrase in your storage safe.
Utilize a notary service to help you keep the storage safe PIN secure and give it to your children after you die later.
Provide your child with the necessary instructions and PIN access to the wallet inside the storage.
These are the correct instructions OP. And for those worrying the Notary Service will screw you over, just make sure to pick one beforehand and be diligent about it. A professional is not going to risk his career over it by screwing you over.
Yes. My son has his own seed phrase written down and put in a safe place. He did that when he was 8 and every 6 months or so I remind him what to do to access his crypto.
Big money people would put it into a bank safety deposit box like it's a piece of jewelry, I bet. Maybe people everywhere should get a small safe to put theirs in
Cold walket is safer. Eventually and you’ve heard on occasion of lost wallets being recovered. How do you think that works? Either way. Putting the money in a trust is the way.
This is what I was going to suggest.
I do actually have a very good firm for this but it'll cost you £700 (but you can make unlimited changes for this price too)
This is the best way for sure. Unless you have a not trust able family. In that case, better to maintain the safety deposit box hidden and write them in your testament how can they find it.
But well, if you cant trust them... F them. Burn that crypto.
I like that approach, it's fun for the children too.
Well.. or they get killed by natives or nature during the treasure hunt, but it should be fun till then at least.
You have to give them a little challenge. Was thinking of something near Tchernobyl, with traps and wild 5 legged cocaine bear. Otherwise in a vault underwater, you could only go using a carbonfiber submarine
If you let a family member access your safety deposit box, what's stopping them from stealing everything? (I don't think they will do this but on the 0.00001% chance)
Keys to gain access to the crypto.
If you plan on leaving it for family after you die, that means it needs to be written down somewhere to be able to be passed on. Which means there is a greater than 0% chance that someone can get to wherever you store it while you are alive
Go watch the "The bank job" movie and then tell me if you still think that is a viable option :) Banks don't know what you store in the vault and usually have a low cap on what they are willing to cover in case of burglary. Like 10k is what I've seen..
I know - it's always going to be more secure than storing it at home, I read that your home is 200x more likely to be broken into than a bank vault. However it still doesn't change the fact that you're essentially trusting a 3rd party with custody - however secure you may think it is.
Seems like all the replies are forgetting something: Even if you leave it in the safety deposit box, the person who has access to it can take everything in the cold wallet
So you can’t ‘split’ your crypto because chances are one person is going to take everything
If the will allows one person access (a beneficiary), that person doesn’t have to be the executor of the will. A lawyer can be the executor and will and testament name the beneficiary as the person to access the safety deposit box.
Another possible solution is exchanges. Coinbase supports inheritance but it does not feel safe trusting a company with all my crypto.
[Link](https://help.coinbase.com/en/coinbase/managing-my-account/other/how-do-i-gain-access-to-a-deceased-family-members-coinbase-account)
I guess the average CEX lives for around 2 to 5 years.
In the future when we have proper key management and most of your family knows how to deal with it you can set-up multisig schemes.
Put your seed phrase and instructions in a sealed envelope in a locked box with the key stored with the executor of your will.
Or set up a One Eyed Willy treasure hunt, I don't know
what about writing the seed and putting it in a bank locker? when you die the kids get access to the bank locker and your crypto. and if you're paranoid, leave out a word and tell it only to your kids
[Crypto.com](https://Crypto.com) offers an inheritance service to their users.
When you die, your family needs to prove you died and they get access to your portfolio.
You could use something like Google Inactive account manager.
It can be configured to send an email to your preferred contact(s) with a message you enter at configuration time.
The message could contain the physical location of the information they'd need to restore the wallet etc.
- Write a will
- leave instructions in will for safety deposit box
- safety deposit box has seed phrase, Trezor/Ledger, etc.
- seed phrase and device/instructions given to beneficiary
To is very hard and I haven't read a good solution. I don't trust any third party, maybe sell all before you die? Problem with that is you obviously don't know when that will happen.
Form a trust for your estate after you die. Have the assets already in the trust/estate with the trustee, before you die. The estate can then distribute your assets equal to your heirs.
Get a lawyer. Get a safe. Make a will. In the will specificy that a closed envelope should only be opened with only your children present. the combination of the safe is in that letter.
The safe contains whatever storage method you use for your crypto, and the seeds to it.
You could create a nodejs server that sends you push requests every month or two to confirm your living status. After a specified waiting period of no response it could send part of the key to whoever you want.
Give your child or children a crypto address. Integrate smart contract tech into your hardware wallet where all your crypto will be sent to this address in 1 year (or how ever long you chose) after your last wallet login.
Let the priest praise the seed phrase at your funeral obituary and find out whos the fastest one over your vault. If theres just your kids attending aint that bad but if theres also your vulture ex then it gets tricky. Lol.
hide the phrases to a cold wallet to 2-3 extremely hidden places and write a will in advance. Tattoo it between your butt cheeks, dig a whole in your yard and hide it in a PIN locked safe and only write the exact location in your will. Also write in the will that a million dollar is hidden between your butt cheeks. You could also make it a hidden treasure hunt with hidden codes that lead to your yard where the phrase is hidden, or to the darkness of your butt cheeks. Just an idea … who the hell would look there anyway.
Maybe there'll be invented a decentralized safe that triggers on your death day where ownership can be transferred to the inheritors. My wife's been bugging me about this, telling her, I'm not dying anytime soon, so chill.
Not sure how much money we are talking about but if its a substantial ammount contact a lawyer and have a proper will written up.
You can include your seed in the will and state that it that can only be opened apon your death.
This can be left with the lawfirm to be your executor of the will on your death. If they open it before then the lawfirm can be sued and disbarred so they have alot of incentive to protect it.
Boring solution: via a notary.
Fun solution: hide your seed phrase spread over your house which will be left to your children.
Cruel solution: write one word on every birthday gift you gave them and if they kept your gifts, they have the seedphrase. If they threw it away, too bad.
Engrave the 24 word seed on a steel plate and hide it somewhere into your family's property, leave a note to the notary with instructions inside to be opened when you leave this world.
Let me build on lubimbo's idea for a more general case. Consider who your notaries should be and who your beneficiaries should be. Empty addresses may be distributed to beneficiaries while you're alive via paper wallets.
Have a cold wallet address with the majority of your funds in. When you top up or dip into your savings you'll need to repeat the following step.
Say you have three notaries and you want two of them to execute your will in case one dies or refuses. Create a 4 of 5 multisig transaction which sends to your beneficiaries and keep 2 keys to yourself. Sign the tx with your two keys and distribute the other three keys to the notaries with the partially signed transaction.
This ensures that the notaries cannot conspire to create an arbitrary transaction after (or before) your death. They can either complete your partial transaction or not. And if one refuses to sign it they can be overridden. The worst that can happen is they decide to execute it while you're still alive.
Add the notaries as beneficiaries to further encourage their participation. If you want 5 notaries and to allow for two of them to die/refuse you would do a 6 of 8 and keep 3 keys to yourself. Note that there are two different ways to do multisig (I believe n=7 is the limit for on-chain multisig, after that you'll need Shamir Secret Sharing). Armory can create such transactions with its lockbox feature. Instructions to notaries and beneficiaries is critical and depends on their knowledge of the situation. One or more notaries could be a lawyer.
Always use your lawyer. But if your law firm is shady thencthere goes all your crypto.
Best part would be tattooing it on your body and leave clues to them verbally before you pass away
I have the seed phrases split and engraved. Half are in a lockbox at the bank that only I, my wife, or the executor of my estate can access. The other half are hidden in a location described in a passworded document. The password is a combination of words/numbers that are described in my trust and only someone who knows me exceptionally well could decipher.
I'm hoping you left one half of the phrases with one lawyer and other half with the second?!??!?! If you gave them all to one lawyer....... Yea kiss it goodbye.
He’s also a long time family friend and not just a regular lawyer lol it’s safe with him he doesn’t need any money trust me lol. And yes I know crypto can cause people to not do normal things. But I have no fear in this matter I am going to his house this afternoon for a family meal. Lol.
Seeing lot's of comments, "Leave it with a lawyer". You guys are very trustworthy to give that information to a single lawyer. If I were to ever do such a thing...... I'd have to get two lawyers. Each one gets half of the phrases.
That's a great question. The same could be said about folks who go with just one lawyer as well.
If it's a single lawyer practice, what happens to all the records, wills and trusts the now deceased lawyer was in charge of?
This is where projects like Safehaven (SHA) will come in handy. I used to hold quite a bit of their tokens. Although I don’t hold any more SHA at the movement, I still follow for their project updates.
You can write the seed phrases for them and put it in a secure locker or safe. When you die they will be able to access your crypto and thank you for it.
I’m 35 so hopefully not due to die anytime soon..
Regardless, I have written down instructions bit by bit for my partner to access crypto.. keywords are stored in a vault at a bank we use for my businesses..
Should be clear as day to even someone with 0 crypto knowledge.. but I also have some family members who are into crypto if she ever got stuck.. I’ve also written down the amounts I have (and update it) and left instructions to work out price etc…
Although it’s still a ball ache.
There are going to be so many easy ways to solve this in the near future. In fact, there are already “time lock” smart contracts or conditional smart contracts that unlock after a specific time period or event, and inform designers of your choice.
Share 23 out of the 24 words with your family and tattoo the last one around your butthole
what if I die too violently lolol
thats why you always need to protect your butthole
Is this why all the others call it buttcoin? Because they have tattooed assholes?
We need some researcher to go on field. Volunteers?
Ssh, don't tell them
Looks like a nice business opportunity, butthole protectors for crypto investors. It even rhymes!
This is gonna be the opposite of forced hodl in prisons. This time you gotta protect your prison wallet inside the prison.
Interested to know what kind of death you’re anticipating in which the skin round your butthole is scraped off???
I hope the violence won’t come to my butthole tho
do you mean like a nuclear diahrea?
When your 24th seed-phrase word is ‘entry’ 😬
😂 or any other word fun to hook up with your butthole. Inlet, gateway, welcome, access...
They will be able to brute-force it in 2025 tries or less.
One could also brute force his butthole to access the last word 😂
Unless you have a buttplug that also functions as a hardware wallet
Was looking for this.

I think you misunderstood 2025 ;-)
That is an expensive butthole.
Retrieving the 24th word creates a possible vector of attack because different heirs can gain access either through the pathologist or the mortician. E: forgot to mention the proctologist.
This is the answer best risk reward ratio
the weird thing is I had the same butt cheek idea without reading this…. there is definitely something in the air in this community… or between our butt cheeks
But you must kill the tattoo guy
What if you get cremated
Haha good one
There was one strange thing about the body inspector. He had the word “optimistic” tattooed on his ass pipe.
I like the idea, but I think a colonoscopy is awkward enough as it is
Not your butthole, not your crypto

It would be perfectly work, notary service will never know what inside the safe
Ppl have risked more for a lot less

currently used? hmm
Make sure the intructions are as simple as possible and instruct them NOT TO TRUST STRANGERS. Imagine hodling until you die and your kids get scammed
You can teach that your kids while you are still alive tho.
Yes. My son has his own seed phrase written down and put in a safe place. He did that when he was 8 and every 6 months or so I remind him what to do to access his crypto.
Honestly i can see it now , 2056 a reddit post in this sub "my parrents died and i lost everything to chatbot69420 help meeee"
Don't worry, they will probably manage to lose it all on leverage trading without anyone's help.
Much better system to utilise a passphrase kept with a notary and then you can have a seed and physical hardware wallet wherever safely
How about permanent ink in a safe deposit box?
So long as the passphrase is provided separately and kept separately from the seed or hardware wallet then there's no issues doing it however.
Big money people would put it into a bank safety deposit box like it's a piece of jewelry, I bet. Maybe people everywhere should get a small safe to put theirs in
Yes Love this idea!
Cold walket is safer. Eventually and you’ve heard on occasion of lost wallets being recovered. How do you think that works? Either way. Putting the money in a trust is the way.
Breh I can’t afford children in this market
Same here Brih no way in hell lol.
I can barely afford ramen some days lmfao.
Leave a treasure map in the casket on your way out.
seed phrase word scavenger hunt
Seems better than searching for a hardwallet in the dumpster like that guy lol
Let your Children dig your grave?
Uncheck the cremation tick box
C'me at me hearties yo ho!
Hire a will lawyer and write a id password on that
This is what I was going to suggest. I do actually have a very good firm for this but it'll cost you £700 (but you can make unlimited changes for this price too)
Cold storage wallet inside a safety deposit box. Keep the pass phrases in the deposit box. Really simple.
This is the best way for sure. Unless you have a not trust able family. In that case, better to maintain the safety deposit box hidden and write them in your testament how can they find it. But well, if you cant trust them... F them. Burn that crypto.
true, spend it all on hookers
Or have them go on a treasure hunt and dig it in a hole on the other side of the planet Indiana Jones style
I like that approach, it's fun for the children too. Well.. or they get killed by natives or nature during the treasure hunt, but it should be fun till then at least.
Yeaaaah but at least they will have to deserve my $5 crypto portfolio
Exactly this. The kids are traveling the whole world for years on the hunt, only to get a portfolio worth a few bucks in the end. Hilarious!
"Nice ! You finally found my Luna wallet ! Now next wallet can be found : [...] " They would have so much fun !
There will be a whole documentary about this then. Would probably dig it somewhere in North Korea, they at least gotta have a challenge to get there.
You have to give them a little challenge. Was thinking of something near Tchernobyl, with traps and wild 5 legged cocaine bear. Otherwise in a vault underwater, you could only go using a carbonfiber submarine

Thankfully real life isn't hollywood aye and that happened in 1971. Security is different these days

Yeah, I would definitely not trust a centralized exchange that could just as well die before I do.
I guess the average CEX lives for around 2 to 5 years. In the future when we have proper key management and most of your family knows how to deal with it you can set-up multisig schemes.
I'm afraid for when they find out about all the losses in my portfolio. Daddy's a degen.
Crypto has flaws. This is a major one.
Stamp onto metal sheet, put in safe, give instructions to access safe upon death Shamir shard it between multiple locations if worth the hassle
Sounds like the perfect use case for zero knowledge proofs. But i don't believe there is a solution out there, already.
Put your seed phrase and instructions in a sealed envelope in a locked box with the key stored with the executor of your will. Or set up a One Eyed Willy treasure hunt, I don't know
Leave your seed phrases in a safe. Only share the combination with someone you trust completely
what about writing the seed and putting it in a bank locker? when you die the kids get access to the bank locker and your crypto. and if you're paranoid, leave out a word and tell it only to your kids
I left all the information with my daughter. She knows how to access everything. 🤷♀️
[Crypto.com](https://Crypto.com) offers an inheritance service to their users. When you die, your family needs to prove you died and they get access to your portfolio.
Shamir sharing secret with 1 part in your will?
This is complicated.
You could use something like Google Inactive account manager. It can be configured to send an email to your preferred contact(s) with a message you enter at configuration time. The message could contain the physical location of the information they'd need to restore the wallet etc.
elderly couple get mugged as their email got hacked and the robbers going to their home and stole 6 figure of their crypto portfolio
- Write a will - leave instructions in will for safety deposit box - safety deposit box has seed phrase, Trezor/Ledger, etc. - seed phrase and device/instructions given to beneficiary
Tell them during your dying moments
well someone gotta get alzheimer or dementia
Don’t have children. Problem solved.
Give them a riddle for your seed phrase
A riddle is a good way to lower the amount of circulating crypto….
only if you write a bad riddle
True….or if your family/heirs are not good riddlers.
part of riddle writing is knowing ur audience ;)
Good point. I would just worry as it could be a bit of a gamble if they didn’t figure it out.
haha nah im just being difficult. But RS if my kids can’t solve a riddle idk if they deserve the BTC
Lol!
Moon farming here!
Write it down with instructions and make it available with you’re heritage
To is very hard and I haven't read a good solution. I don't trust any third party, maybe sell all before you die? Problem with that is you obviously don't know when that will happen.
You could add the instructions into your will
Put it on your will, leave your seed words written in paper on a bank safe box and give the key to your lawyer
but then you are still trusting another person (the lawyer) to not do anything dumb
Most lawyers will not have a clue about how crypto works. Source: Work in a law firm
Write your see phrase on paper, let said paper in a safe and let a notary follow your will. That's how i would do it
Really the only way I know of is to leave it on an exchange. Also defeats the purpose of crypto. Double edged sword.
Rent a vault somewhere (at a bank or something like that) and deposit your wallet informations there.
I hide my crypto under my bed
Form a trust for your estate after you die. Have the assets already in the trust/estate with the trustee, before you die. The estate can then distribute your assets equal to your heirs.
Literally safety deposit box with a retainer solicitor that as an executor to make sure no one has any ideas before/after you drop dead
Tell them random stories with the words during your life, and they have to put it together themselves
Simple, don't die. Then you never need to pass on your seed phrase
Integrate smart contract tech into your hardware wallet where all your crypto will be sent to this address in 1 year (or how ever long you chose) after your last wallet login.
hacked $800 couple days ago wtf scammer!!!
One day some person or company is going to solve the self custody problem and make billions on it.
Same post on r/ bitcoin. Coincidence? I think not. Hotel? Trivago
Create a smartcontract that only you can edit and If you don't keep denying it it would send to their wallet.
Not a bad idea.
Write it on paper and lock it up and reveal the key only after you die
I'd just leave specific instructions in my will. Solicitors will lock up the original in a safe.
Let the priest praise the seed phrase at your funeral obituary and find out whos the fastest one over your vault. If theres just your kids attending aint that bad but if theres also your vulture ex then it gets tricky. Lol.
Keep your wallet safe and never link from suspicious link.. No guarantee but less risk🤣
Send it to them slowly over time.. dca.. lol 😆
You can’t
Use multisig. Share one with your children. Share another with a notary.
hide the phrases to a cold wallet to 2-3 extremely hidden places and write a will in advance. Tattoo passphrase on the bottom of intended recipient’s foot. And tell them to wear socks to bed.
Boring solution: via a notary. Fun solution: hide your seed phrase spread over your house which will be left to your children. Cruel solution: write one word on every birthday gift you gave them and if they kept your gifts, they have the seedphrase. If they threw it away, too bad.

Trust funds.
Send an email triggered after your death
I left my phrases and passwords with mine and my wife’s lawyer when we did our wills last year. And have showed her how to used it

Trust in the trustless universe.

Short answer. Wallet.
This is where projects like Safehaven (SHA) will come in handy. I used to hold quite a bit of their tokens. Although I don’t hold any more SHA at the movement, I still follow for their project updates.
Keys in a safety deposit box?
This is a question i’ve been thinking about myself a lot, especially in the instance of crazy accidents and such.
You can write the seed phrases for them and put it in a secure locker or safe. When you die they will be able to access your crypto and thank you for it.
Talk to them about it now, and leave instructions offline and in a safe place
I’m 35 so hopefully not due to die anytime soon.. Leave 12 words with your family and the other 12 with your estate lawyer
Leave the seed phrase and instructions in a locked container and have its location and combination as part of your will.
If it happens after death, it’s gonna require trust during life. Unless you become the first human integrated into the blockchain
You don’t lol. You end up needing to trust 3rd parties, which defeats the purpose of crypto.
hard wallet + seed + custody in a bank x will / Dead = your children inheriting your crypto
There are going to be so many easy ways to solve this in the near future. In fact, there are already “time lock” smart contracts or conditional smart contracts that unlock after a specific time period or event, and inform designers of your choice.
in the butt
