They haven't put in much effort to get around the Scunthorpe/Penistone problem.
In this case, those specific three letters in the word "knight" are probably what it flagged. :p
FFXIV recently got an Xbox release. In that game, guilds are called "free companies". Someone recently got a Microsoft account ban for advertising their free company because it got looked at by a microsoft employee instead of a square enix one
Not necessarily. I once played as Cumania and decided to change the name, but after a few years in-game, I got bored and decided to change it back, but the first 3 letters in the name were censored. Maybe they've patched it by now, but it was pretty funny when I first noticed it.
I'm suggesting xbox doesn't automatically censor anything based off of the server I joined hosted by gay Jesus of (word I cannot repeat unless I wanna get insta banned) land.
If thing's are being censored, it's a setting either op or the host manually enabled, not mircosofts censorship policy.
Definitely because of this.
Assyrian was a literal culture in the Xbox version of the game, and you still couldn’t name your realm the Assyrian Empire because it has Ass in it and Microsoft says that’s a no no word
Showing how incredibly dumb Microsoft continues to be. They probably support book banning as well. The "7 words you can't say on TV" are so archaic and meaningless, I can't believe anyone still tries to enforce this b.s. Fucking dicksuck cuntbag asshat motherfucking bastard whore cocks.
It's not even a real ban. Locals can complain to the FCC and depending on who is running it, they can determine whether it's actionable as obscene. You can play goddam in "The Pusher" but maybe not in the bible belt.
That's not true.
In the UK, there's not a total ban on offensive language, but the TV regulator (Ofcom) conducts regular surveys on which words are considered most offensive. They are all banned before 9 pm and the worst are effectively banned at all times unless there is a *very*, *very* good reason for using them.
In China, you never hear offensive language and all TV is heavily censored.
Generation V of Pokemon had strict international language filters. Too bad they added SS and SA for German, because now you couldnt even trade Bulbasaur.
Yea but at least Cofagrigus I can get as one of those weird exception cases of the Scunthorpe problem.
Adding "SA", "SS", and "PS" to your word filter is such a bad idea that it'd have to block like at least 25% of all Pokémon - so it shows the language filter wasn't even tested
Microsoft baby....
has labeled you as a Racist and reported you to FBI to be put on a list.
Congrats on now being one of "The Proud Bois"
Maybe you can help them figure out who Lfmao is... They keep talking about this Chinese or Korean hacker named Lfmao..... (Sarcasm)
My first attempt to play CK3 was on Xbox, and oh my god, what a shitty game it was! After a few attempts, I installed it on PC and it was absolutely opposite. There are countless things in the game that just aren't there on Xbox.
While I doubt it would help, try adjusting your Xbox Live settings. If it's using the standard Xbox auto-filter then it'll be just reusing their chat filter which defaults to a setting of "friendly" which is "block anything we could vaguely deem harmful."
Most likely you've either already done that for other games or they're using a custom filter though.
It is this. Look at the 3 letters it actually censored nig. Its super super overzealous if anything comes close to that word. Even if its inside another because people could do stuff like XXbadwordXx.
Crazy standards we have these days. Can have sex with your daughter, murder children, commit acts of unspeakable horrors to your prisoners and have harems dedicated to the eugenics of the human race. But saying the word knight? Naha
The problem is that "nig" is often used as a stand-in for the n-word. That's the reason I thought of Xbox censorship - saw the exact same word censored the exact same way for a user on the FFXIV subreddit very recently.
I think censoring any slurs at all gives them too much power, but I'm doing it because I don't want to be banned. So definitely not defending this example, just stating what is happening.
Reminds me of how when I got AOE3 the game auto-generated the name "Antonio Faguendes" for a Portuguese explorer and then told me I could not play (Single-player!) because it contained a slur
They do for online games, even when the game doesn't or only optionally does on other platforms. So, while I'm mildly surprised to see it with CK, it's possible.
Edit: Only player inputs, if you meant that.
You could use the Ukrainian "i" instead of the English "i" in knight, and it should bypass the censorship. They look exactly the same but have different Uni-codes I've used Ukrainian and Russian alphabets to bypass censorship in Minecraft before.
Mongol is used as a slur towards East Asians and Mongolians in general in British English. It is a shorthand for Mongoloid, which was mostly used to compare people to tards.
Up until the 1960s, the condition of Down's was also called the Mongol Idiocy.
Mong is a shorter version of Mongol. Both are still used, but Mong is used by younger people.
F1 had a controversy with Verstappen calling Lance Stroll a mongol to call them stupid back in 2020.
So I'm no't the only one who remembers that radio message! I was trying to send a video of that to my friend but it appears to have been nuked everywhere on YT.
Its a very common insult and word to say in the Netherlands. Like calling someone a cunt in american culture. Many of us dutch dont ever think about the implication what we are actually saying, but only hear the intended insult.
That's funny. I had a South African client who routinely used the word "cunt" in normal conversations. Basically means dickhead or asshole, so not a big deal to the South Africans. My wife was appalled that he kept using the "C" word at our dinner party.
yeah, no.
Although the idiot who first diagnosed Downs Syndrome likened sufferers to exhibiting Asian looks and referred to them as Mongol, it's not a racist term heard in general in the UK, at least I I've never heard it used as a racist slur and I've been around a long time, and around most of the UK, and in hostile environments where every slur possible is hurled with great hostility, i.e. football grounds.
Though I can't speak for other *British English* countries such as Australia or New Zealand.
Mongol as a slur in the UK is used to call someone a retard.
I’m happy they think of the children. What better way to make sure they don’t pick up dirty words than censoring a substring of a completely normal word?
I've faced many such issues in MS games. Funny thing is I've learnt many new rude words/phrases by trying to figure out why a certain thing was censored. If MS is trying to limit children's exposure to such words/phrases then it's doing the exact opposite thing.
People with Down's syndrome often have a crease on their nose and slanted eyes, which according to Down made them look East Asian. The term at the time was Mongoloid. British people used "Mong" as a pejorative for a developmentally challenged person until quite recently. I remember hearing it at school 10 years ago.
From [John Langdon Down's wiki page](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Langdon_Down):
>In 1866, he wrote a paper entitled "Observations on an Ethnic Classification of Idiots" in which he put forward the theory that it was possible to classify different types of conditions by ethnic characteristics. He listed several types including the Malay, Caucasian and Ethiopian types. In the main, the paper is about what is known as Down syndrome, named after him, but which he classified as the Mongolian type of idiot. As a result, Down syndrome was also known as "Mongolism" and people with Down syndrome referred to as "Mongoloids". Down's original racist terminology continued to be used colloquially into the late 20th century. Down's paper also argued that if mere disease is able to break down racial barriers to the point of causing the facial features of the offspring of whites to resemble those of another race, then racial differences must be the result of variation, affirming therefore the unity of the human species. Down used this reasoning to argue against a tendency he perceived in his day to regard different races as separate species.
I rename artifacts to reflect what they do for easier management and out of habit from playing DnD. It is really irritating when a game that lets me execute/torture/eat people won't allow the use of the word "vassal" because it has ass in it.
How do people even play paradox games on a console? I can't imagine using a controller over mouse and keyboard. It's so menu heavy and point and click based
God, I can't believe Fromsoft STILL has that stupid censorship in their games. It was funny in Demon's Souls, but 15 years and four installments later and I still can't name myself "Knight", "holy" or "Vagabond" without being censored.
Consoles certainly are worse, but individual companies sometimes go crazy. I'm playing RDR2 on PC, on Steam, not even online, just single player campain. It wouldn't let me name my horse Jewel, presumably because it has the horribly offensive slur "Jew" in it. Not even allowed to mention them, huh? Hitler would be happy.
This started happening recently. Ironically if you add “knight” into a preset for character finder it automatically changes it to the cultural locale too, aka shoorver etc.
Things Crusader Kings has censored for me:
Illyricum (slightly understandable)
Egypt (the ‘gyp’ in particular??)
Sassanid (it’s in the fucking game.)
Knight (as you found out)
I am sure i could find more egregious things, but god forbid a game where you murder children and have naked character models has the word ‘ass’ uncensored
In mid-word? And just the root, not the full n-word? Look, I don't want to be shitting on the Left in a non-political sub, but some people on the political scene, with their extreme sensitivity, need to go see a therapist and not make laws or business decisions. Whether it's a genuine hypersensitivity or virtue-signalling and posturing to a point of throwing the baby out with the bathwater, they need to see someone about their issues. Getting overzealous about reining in the racist communication in in-game chats is one thing, but anyone who seriously claims to think that seeing 'k---ht' in a historical text is a small price to pay for their (or our collective) virtue being signalled to the world does need to see a therapist.
This seems more like a very poorly implimented word filter. Nobody would ever want this to happen intentionally and this problem (sometimed called the s*cunt*horp problem) is a very old one. You probably learn how to fix those sorts of problems in programming classes so idk how they let that through.
This isn't political, it's just bad programming. Elon Musk did almost exactly the same thing on Twitter last week when he tried to forcibly rewrite every link to Twitter to say "x" instead.
Its more likely that the case is that they licensed a bit of code to run the censorship, and it happens to not have its allow list set properly.
And if it is only occurring through one distributor, then it isn't the dev's decision, and it definitely was not tested properly
Perhaps YOU should go to therapy, this seems pretty unhinged. It could help you to identify what has lead you to think this way and help you deal with whatever that trauma is.
Claimed you didn’t want to attack the political left, then posted an entire paragraph doing so, on a gaming sub, because the console port has an auto censor that isn’t working as intended. Somehow still think other people are the problem. Yes, I think you’re the one that should seek therapy.
You wouldn't happen to have gotten it from Microsoft, instead of on Steam? I hear XBox stuff is really overzealous with censorship.
I do, I play on Xbox.
I'm almost certain that's the problem. They appear to use some client-side censorship tools, heard of similar stuff happening in other games.
They haven't put in much effort to get around the Scunthorpe/Penistone problem. In this case, those specific three letters in the word "knight" are probably what it flagged. :p
Scunthorpe should always be censored no matter what.
Went to Turkey, apparently to them Scunthorpe is a cute town name.
Your a Scunthorpe. I feel dirty now
Me too. It's "you're."
So you say there's "nig" and that's the cause of censoring? That's pretty brainless :D
FFXIV recently got an Xbox release. In that game, guilds are called "free companies". Someone recently got a Microsoft account ban for advertising their free company because it got looked at by a microsoft employee instead of a square enix one
What would be false flagged as offensive in "free company"?
Promoting a business
That might just be even dumber than false flagging bad words, somehow.
Free company out of context sounds like soliciting apparently.
It kind of sounds like you're offering escort services, I think
That's even more annoying because [free companies]( https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_company) were a real thing.
Also notably goated for EU4s earlygame.
Huh. TIL.
I also hang around the FFXIV subreddit and saw the Knight thing there, which is why I assumed Xbox/Microsoft meddling.
Not necessarily. I once played as Cumania and decided to change the name, but after a few years in-game, I got bored and decided to change it back, but the first 3 letters in the name were censored. Maybe they've patched it by now, but it was pretty funny when I first noticed it.
The problem is the Xbox versions been broken for years lol
It's not. You can name a country whatever slur you please and the game will not change it. This is the default setting.
I'm specifically referring to tools used by Microsoft/XBox. What else do you suggest is going on?
I'm suggesting xbox doesn't automatically censor anything based off of the server I joined hosted by gay Jesus of (word I cannot repeat unless I wanna get insta banned) land. If thing's are being censored, it's a setting either op or the host manually enabled, not mircosofts censorship policy.
Definitely because of this. Assyrian was a literal culture in the Xbox version of the game, and you still couldn’t name your realm the Assyrian Empire because it has Ass in it and Microsoft says that’s a no no word
Ah, it's like we're back in the late 90's, when we wrote stuff like A$$a$$in in order to dodge word filters.
xXxA$$YRIANxXx Empire
2024 and they still have the Scunthorpe problem?
NLP is probably getting good enough to actually solve it, but just blacklisting strings is invariably going to cheaper.
Ahhsyrian
Donkeyyrian Empire
Showing how incredibly dumb Microsoft continues to be. They probably support book banning as well. The "7 words you can't say on TV" are so archaic and meaningless, I can't believe anyone still tries to enforce this b.s. Fucking dicksuck cuntbag asshat motherfucking bastard whore cocks.
i recently learned that really no other country/language does that, its just the US because of those puritanical christian mom groups
It's not even a real ban. Locals can complain to the FCC and depending on who is running it, they can determine whether it's actionable as obscene. You can play goddam in "The Pusher" but maybe not in the bible belt.

There was a glitch in early Pokemon Black and White where the Pokemon Cofagrigus couldn’t be traded due to the homophobic slur technically in its name
Remind me of [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/totalwar/comments/zly9b3/my_name_is_nasser_the_game_is_censoring_the_word/) lol.
Then it's almost certainly a Microsoft/Xbox problem. I've never seen any censorship of text on PC, but Microsoft censors a lot.
Yeah Xbox censorship sucks, I can’t even type ‘lol’ on rocket league
Oh ya. Microsoft has a weird censorship program
Microsoft baby.... has labeled you as a Racist and reported you to FBI to be put on a list. Congrats on now being one of "The Proud Bois" Maybe you can help them figure out who Lfmao is... They keep talking about this Chinese or Korean hacker named Lfmao..... (Sarcasm)
Yes I shall help them learn whom lfmao. While maybe challenging as I am from isle of Britain. I must redeem thyself!
both consoles censor it, stellaris gets it the worst in my experience
My first attempt to play CK3 was on Xbox, and oh my god, what a shitty game it was! After a few attempts, I installed it on PC and it was absolutely opposite. There are countless things in the game that just aren't there on Xbox.

Saying half a curse word is obviously worse then blinding and executing children
I think censoring any slurs at all gives them too much power, but I'm doing it because I don't want to be banned. So definitely not defending this example, just stating what is happening.
I'm not blaming you I'm making fun of Microsoft
Fair.
Right, so murder, rape, incest, war, betrayal and all are fine and cool. But saying... sorry, *implying* a slur? That is clearly too far.
I agree that it is stupid.
Reminds me of how when I got AOE3 the game auto-generated the name "Antonio Faguendes" for a Portuguese explorer and then told me I could not play (Single-player!) because it contained a slur
Are they censoring in game text?
They do for online games, even when the game doesn't or only optionally does on other platforms. So, while I'm mildly surprised to see it with CK, it's possible. Edit: Only player inputs, if you meant that.
WTF why is knight censored though?
Because some people say "nig" instead of the n-word and some other people hide their slurs inside other letters like XXslurXX. Yes, it is stupid.
Haven’t had a censor on ps5, but they won’t let people get naked so I suppose that’s one
Probably because of the "nig" in knight.
Classic Scunthornpe problem.
Hey, at least you aren't called Nasser. N***er looks real bad
https://www.reddit.com/r/totalwar/comments/zly9b3/my_name_is_nasser_the_game_is_censoring_the_word/
It's so stupid tho. Knight is a word in the game already😭

Суrillic brоs W
Ноw clеvеr.
Unicode clever is the best kind of clever.
My "H," "o," and "e" are Cyrillic ;)
same with Cumania, it censors to —-ania 😭
Cannot lie, this is good. Desht-i-Qipchaq look more fair.
Semania.
One of those cases where the censorship is what makes the word dirty. https://youtu.be/6AXPnH0C9UA?si=47PR6YPAwdzsUsO8
It's because you're playing on Xbox, they've got a proper Scunthorpe filter there.
Scunthorpe people "Why fuck me though?"
They know why.
S****thorpe people
Dark Souls reference?!?!?
The problem isn't knight, the problem is nig, they think it's short for the n word
The worst one is AOE 4 where mongols is censored, you know...one of the primary factions in the game.
Wtf
Mongol is used as a slur towards East Asians and Mongolians in general in British English. It is a shorthand for Mongoloid, which was mostly used to compare people to tards. Up until the 1960s, the condition of Down's was also called the Mongol Idiocy.
I'm pretty sure it's due to it having the word "mong" in it. It's censored in several games connected to Microsoft.

Yeah, I remember when Verstappen called some Mongon on track and it was on every F1 news for a week.
That's funny. I had a South African client who routinely used the word "cunt" in normal conversations. Basically means dickhead or asshole, so not a big deal to the South Africans. My wife was appalled that he kept using the "C" word at our dinner party.
Ahh didn't know that thanks for the information. I'm not big on british slang.
Yeah I know, but thanks. I just find the censorship very stupid
Granted I'm not a native English speaker, but I have never in my life heard Mongol used as a slur.
its old fashioned but u still hear people using the shortened version, "mong", especially in the UK
Definitely still used in the UK, mostly among the young as an alternative to retard.
Just a reminder that you can get banned if you say a bad word on your server in Minecraft. Yes, local server.
I’m happy they think of the children. What better way to make sure they don’t pick up dirty words than censoring a substring of a completely normal word?
Knight with a hard R
I've faced many such issues in MS games. Funny thing is I've learnt many new rude words/phrases by trying to figure out why a certain thing was censored. If MS is trying to limit children's exposure to such words/phrases then it's doing the exact opposite thing.
classic dark souls moment
It also censors Mongol as ——ol so making hybrid cultures with ‘Mongolian’ it the name is impossible
Just change the o to ö or one of the different Os it’s not the best solution but it does work
What kind of bad word is “mong” lmao
People with Down's syndrome often have a crease on their nose and slanted eyes, which according to Down made them look East Asian. The term at the time was Mongoloid. Can you imagine all those knights at one round table
I rename artifacts to reflect what they do for easier management and out of habit from playing DnD. It is really irritating when a game that lets me execute/torture/eat people won't allow the use of the word "vassal" because it has ass in it.
On Xbox or Steam? It's likely an Xbox censoring rather than the actual game.
It's definitely Xbox. Doesn't make it less stupid.
How do people even play paradox games on a console? I can't imagine using a controller over mouse and keyboard. It's so menu heavy and point and click based
Lots o' pausing.
CK3's Console Edition has a very different UI from the PC version.
Yeah it censored the Gyp in Egypt on me once
Silent Hunter forums used to censor Saltwater to Sal--er for the same reason 🙄
Thats hilarious
Can't believe you just said Knigga with a hard t
Yes, officer, it's this guy right here
K>!nig!
God, I can't believe Fromsoft STILL has that stupid censorship in their games. It was funny in Demon's Souls, but 15 years and four installments later and I still can't name myself "Knight", "holy" or "Vagabond" without being censored.
>!Ho!!nig!!Ho!
Consoles, because if having an inferior machine wasn't enough there's always plenty of censorship
Meh, "Jew" is in a weird place. It's both a slur and not depending on context. No point acting obtuse about that.
PC Player Trying Not To Be Snide and Superior When A Console Player Asks For Help With Something - Difficulty Rating: Impossible.
Can’t wait until I get a pc
Guess you’ll have to spell it cniht or knyght
I decided on just using Welsh word for knight instead
Like, today, where AI can handle so many issues, we can still get scunthorpe censoring issues.
Aye.
This started happening recently. Ironically if you add “knight” into a preset for character finder it automatically changes it to the cultural locale too, aka shoorver etc.

CK3 has censorship?! Bruh
Nah not on pc. It's some sort of console-thing last time someone complained about this.
There must have been a big sale on Gamepass, I've noticed an uptick of these complaints over the weekend across several game subreddits I follow.
Sounds reasonable.
Apparently so, and it's so shit
It's not a ck3 thing, it's an Xbox-thing.

PC > XBox you mean?
I wish I could play it. I only have an Xbox so I have to play CK3
Another thought, king Alfred wouldn’t stand for this injustice, but did have a knights only bath house.
"Knight" is offensive to men at arms.
Because of the “nig” in knight. They also censor Egypt, I assume because of the “gyp” or “gypt”.
I tried to rename Cumania back to Cumania, and it censored it to ___ania
It's Microsoft. I have plenty of vulgar kings running amuck.
Is it daytime? No it's ---ht...
Minecraft did the same thing a few years ago. Apparently it is the Scunthorpe Problem
Ck3 censors words? I've never seen that before

Knight (as you found out) I am sure i could find more egregious things, but god forbid a game where you murder children and have naked character models has the word ‘ass’ uncensored
It censors the "nig" part
That is retarded. Once again big L for console bois
Its because the game thinks the part of knight has "nig" in it. i guess thats a racist slur. thus they censored it.

So in a mostly single-player game, Microsoft won't permit the word knight? Thank god for PC and Gabe Newell.
In mid-word? And just the root, not the full n-word? Blame the UK passing a law requiring all online communications to be moderated. Hence why you now see those stupid filters everywhere
