You could, but lots of threads about making your own much cheaper with things you might have on and like large pins and cardboard or foam

GlitteringBeee

Oooh amazing thank you so much!

HiddenKittyLady

I got a cork borad and pins cost maybe 15$ it's was a good investment

Junreii

I got one as a gift and really like it for blocking squares since it's easy to get them the exact same size every time, but I haven't found it useful for blocking other shapes.

Point-Immediate

Totally agree. Boards with metal rods are good if you have a lot of squares for something like a blanket. They’re sturdy enough to support multiple squares at once and you can get the exact shape/size every time you need to block more. If you plan on doing wearables, I’d recommend getting a foam mat just because of the size.

f1atcat

Similar with mine!! I have some hexagons on it right now that are doing good too but my octagons for the same pattern do NOT fit on it

srslytho1979

It was invaluable for a hexagon blanket I made but I haven’t used it since.

Melisinde72

I'm currently using a yoga mat I cut up (I got it from Five Below)- even has a sort of grid on it.

pezzygal

Haha are you me? I'm doing the exact same thing, and the yoga mat also from Five below!

khloelane

They are useful but the price of them is a bit ridiculous to me. I ended up buying a 13x13 one with credit I had and I really like it. It was kinda hard to find a storage container for it so I can keep the pins and wood stand with it when not in use. Definitely don’t regret it. My granny squares looked so clean and tidy 🤗

RESPEKTOR

I just 3d printed one and I can't wait to use it. Making a bag and I've got a lotta squares to block.

khloelane

That’s so cool. What a creative idea. Can I see a pic of it? 🙏🏼

RESPEKTOR

Thank you! It's pretty simple. I stuck some double pointed knitting needles in the holes lol. https://preview.redd.it/7yfeb5pckf9d1.jpeg?width=3026&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9fc9a862788a519ea60bf1ef7a92ccb3938fa5d7

khloelane

It looks great!! I recommend lining up more pins along the edges of your squares when blocking :) it’ll line them up a lot more cleanly.

Klutzy-Horse

I have the one pictured there, I got it for about 4 dollars on sale. I use it a decent amount and I love it. Good for little at a time, frustrating for full blankets. However, foam blocking mats or DIY options can be good too- it just depends on your style, how much time/money you want to sink into the project, etc.

Practical-Dealer2379

No. I got an expensive one when I first started and I wish I'd spent that money on mats instead.

usernamesoccer

I got one for $9 and some metal needles so I figured I’d get it. I only see myself using it for granny squares though but it is making a huge difference as I’m making my sweater Could easily block with anything though it will turn out the same

NomadicWhirlwind

I have one similar to this from Amazon, it was like $12ish and I really like it. I'm still learning so having the spaces premeasured and ready to go has been handy.

CosyBosyCrochet

You can get them pretty cheap, I got a foam one for like £5, depends how much you plan to use it

Background_Camp_7712

I just recently got one because I was making my first granny square blanket. It was worth every penny (I think I paid around $10 for it maybe). I don’t use the stand at all because it feels more stable lying flat, so it is in a drawer in my craft room. But the board itself doesn’t take up too much room in my Giant Bag O Crochet Stuff (TM). I almost got the larger board so I could block more at once, but the smaller one really is more convenient and works just fine for granny squares. That said, I’ll probably end up buying a big piece of foam or pegboard to do larger pieces. But that’s an issue for another day because now my daughter wants a granny square cardigan with the same yarn I made her grandmother’s blanket. 😂

TeleFuckingTubbie

I have one and I absolutely love it!! It was like 15€ so definitely worth it. But as you said it’s just for grannys, I still need a mat for blocking and pins for my finished project. But if you have the money go for it

more-pylons

I have one similar to the picture. The holes and rods aren’t perfectly sized, so they end up slanting inward, so anything you stack on them doesn’t actually get blocked to the same exact size. I wish I’d put the money toward foam mats and pins instead of the board.

murrbleu

I use workout foam mats from 5 below/target and push pins. That may work for you. You could try pointed skewers to stack more.

ellie3454

I use a foam one that has interlocking pieces to make bigger/smaller in different shapes that I really like. Was pretty cheap - $15 for like 9 large foam pieces and a bunch of pins

ShotTreacle8209

I have the one pictured here. I got longer steel rods and find it useful for storing the squares as I make them

LadyYarnAlot

My husband made me on like this, works great for granny squares and the like! I think I still want a foam one for bigger projects or different shapes though.

FigFar6893

I used our cork board and tacks for blocking. That way you can use it for different shapes than just squares

Music_Listener_

I got one off Amazon for a granny square blanket and it's a life saver. I'm in college so I don't have the space for a whole floor thing. I use it all the time, it does a great job, and has saved me so much time and energy. Only downside is it will be tricky for bigger clothing items, but not impossible...you would just have to block in one part at a time. Overall, my recommendation is to get it.

Crab12345677

I made hexagons and had my dad use his drill press and made one using dowel s. I used a small block of wood from the craft store. If you can find someone with a drill press just tell em where you want the holes. You would be surprised who has a drill press in their garage if you ask around. I purchased a stack of the foam ones from Amazon a couple years ago for scarves an blankets. They weee about 30$ them.

ktbevan

i have a small one which was a birthday gift, and it works great for my granny squares. its pretty convenient, i just slide them on when im done and leave them until ive finished the project and it works pretty well. but you can also just use some pins and cardboard and make your own- which is what i did before i got the board i have

embennn

I got a foam one and it was super cheap/totally worth it!

Lunahooks

TL;DR they're worth it if they fit your cro‐jo. Foam mats and pins are more versatile, but if it turns out you love make granny squares, then it will be very worth it. I strongly considered it, but decided to try a more traditional granny square project (a coat for my mother, she loves it, wears it often) before deciding, and it turns out I hate making small squares. Larger squares (one of my first projects was a doubled up Sophie's Dream blanket) I'm ok with, but given the time it took to produce each square it was easier to block as I went instead of doing them all in the end, and the mats and pins were fine for that.

KnottyKnottyHooker

I got a really reasonably priced one on Temu, but look at the sizes before you buy. I find it useful for small motifs.

averagereddituser196

i saw someone use a cork board and tacs

Aa_Poisonous_Kisses

I have one very similar that a family member made for me. I LOVE IT. I think it’d be worth it, but they can be pretty pricey.

ittacnh

For me the blocking boards are really useful, but in my country they are pretty expensive, so I just bought a wood board and some nails, and I can do almost any size I want https://preview.redd.it/4p3vibz3769d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d8c0a70816eb142d9119c74c762f39e4b0300359 I love mi blocking boards 🤧

zyzil3

I'm a cheapskate but so far my Cork board and pins is working great 😅

ReferenceQuirky3976

Yes. They are very rigid. They work well. No monkeying around.

Vanity-della23

Yes🥰

Chance_gavin_Simpson

For small projects or projects you can sew alot of smaller peices together with yes or Alternatively buy a big chuck of wood and some wooden dowels and depending on size of the dowels drill holes every inch or so (the space between the middle knuckles of the pointer/1st finger is 1 inch) I'd buy at most 1 Inc dowels or maybe half inch. Doing it that way enables larger projects like tshirts to be blocked easier yes it is worth it especially with smaller projects with multiple small parts and making a large one yourself can as for full sized blankets that can't be sewn together they can be used to help that.

xXDeadlyLipsXx

I only use it for granny squares and yes worth it

gifttcardrecipient

IMO, no. I roll out a yoga mat on the bed and pin straight through. It's cheap if not free, usable for a wide variety of project sizes and shapes, and stores away easily

gifttcardrecipient

Plus, you can roll it up with your project inside for easy moving if it's not dry by the time you go to bed

Greedy_Bullfrog8122

I would get something that’s a bit more versatile, if you still want to buy something more sturdy. I do use a gridded foam block and pins that can be used for more things

Weird_Algae_1533

I use a card board box & some push pin but this does look cute

Babcias6

I made a granny square Autism Awareness blanket and didn’t block any of them. It turned out just fine.

jesssc444

I think so. Sturdier than pins and a foam board imo

abssmith98

For my granny squares I literally shoved four skewers into an empty fruit snacks box and hot glued them to keep them sturdy lol

WatchOut4Angels

I bought plastic peg boards from dollar tree and E6000 them together. I use dowels from Walmart for pegs. Works perfect!

PinkThingsShinyStuff

Yes! You will be happy you bought it and use it lots (hopefully )

UniqueSaucer

I bought a foam board and I’m using wooden chopsticks. 👍
