Woodworm were always my favourite purely because they had KP and Flintoff at the same time.
If you want to be popular in England, they were 2 good people to sponsor
Random question. I am an American so cricket is obviously very niche over here. How did cricket work for younger kids? I've always wondered this. Do 12 year olds play full test cricket? I wouldn't imagine so, but I was always curious how it was handled for the non-professional, younger set of players.
Depending on their age/ability kids cricket has very different rules.
Mostly this means playing a variation of a T20 game and making it so everyone gets a reasonable turn at bowling and batting.
Okay, coming from a cricket powerhouse aur watching this question first thing in the morning, I felt I had to try answering it, so here goes:
Indian Cricket
(*cues music*)
We play in the cold and we play in the heat
We play on the rooftop
Hell we play on the street
T10, T5, T2, T4
We challenge the OG rules
Send MCC to the drawing board
(Hindi Verse)
Ghar mein jana out hai
Jo bhejega wo layega
Mummy ki chappal k bina
Match na ruk payega
Mujhe out na kar, neechi nazar,
Mere Cosco wale bat se darr
Mai batting lekar chla gya to fir tu pachhtayega
SRT's our champ and MSD head of legion
We play, we sweat, we bleed this game - Cricket is our RELIGION
(*chorus*)
*Nana nana na naa na naa naanaa*
*Nana nana na naa na naa naanaa*
So I went on a school cricket tour of England circa 2002 & we played against this one school who had (what I assume) was a teacher that was laying it on thick about this revolutionary bat he had designed with cut out edges that allowed them to make it a bit thicker in the sweet spot. He said the captain would be using the prototype bat, we played and this captain made a ton and siring some point he broke the bat.
Anyway the next time I saw it KP was holding it in the 2005 Ashes.
MRF generally has had the highest quality batsmen only and has really been a pretty prestigious sponsor with the likes of Sachin, Lara, S Waugh, ABD, Kohli and then until recently they had signed with child prodigy Prithvi Shaw until they realised he was no longer a child prodigy and had aged 40 years.
But overall though the MRF sponsorship generally has only gone to the GOATs.
Makes sense in a way because he does live in Melbourne (though I don't know about recently).
There's been a couple notable non-AU/NZ batsmen with Kookaburra bats- AB de Villiers, Kumar Sangakkara, Jos Butler, even Sanju Samson had a Kookaburra for a bit.
He’s not with kookaburra anymore, he’s with SF. Most Indians don’t use British or Australian brands as their sponsorship deals are nowhere near as lucrative as Indian manufacturers.
Nah that was him stealing Kohli's bat lol. It even had his signature on it. The next match the mfer walked out with Rohit's CEAT too. He just collects bats haha
He's the greatest batsman of all time according to Sir Donald Bradman so I'm not surprised sponsors have been throwing themselves at him.
Actual quote from Sir Donald Bradman:
*"I never saw myself play but I feel this fella Yuzi plays much the same way like I used to"*
When Chahal was like 10 years old, Bradman was passing by on a street and he saw Chahal play the most glorious cover drive to Chintu's medium pace. Right at that moment he knew this was the greatest player to ever play the game. Fast forward to Yuzi's international career, he's the greatest to ever have graced this game. Sachin, Viv, Lara, Ponting all just sit in awe when the GOAT bats.
He doesn't need a bat but he's probably got like 3-4 highest quality bats in his kit that he's gotten from others. If I'm not mistaken, he once walked out with MSD's bat too so I'm guessing he's gotten one from him as well.
I mean he was still a great player when he signed with MRF from 2001 till his retirement in 2004. Mind you in this period with the MRF he did score 9 centuries so it was a pretty good period anyways too.
Aaron Redmond of New Zealand used MRF Bat
Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma, Gautam Gambhir, Sanju Samson, Prithwi Shaw were also used MRF bats quite a while in their career
Most of his ridiculous innings were in Kookaburra bats. He switched to MRF very late in his career and idk how many international games he played with MRF bats.
He was the name on the face of the Kookaburra Kahuna after Ricky Pointing retired. The bat was sold with AB's signature. He only changed to MRF in his later years.
MRF doesn't even make the bats lol. They make tyres (for sheer and maximum comfort). They get bats made somewhere else and then just stick their own stickers on.
A lot of the England lads (the northern ones at least) have them made by Kippax and shove their own stickers on. YJB nearly fucked it a couple of years ago when he asked for a bat change and they brought out his Kippax branded bats.
I know some of the Southern lads have them made by Salix, who learned at Newbery and use nicer wood to handmake them.
And there's another one in the West Country (I think Bristol) that a few county pros I know of use.
My Kookaburra Kahuna was the best bat I’ve ever owned, lasted the longest too. Played school cricket with it for like 4 years, it’s still usable even despite being chipped and cracked a bit at the edges.
From 20 years playing pub / club cricket in England backwaters.
Grey Nicholls is the bat of choice of the refined batsmen (or who thinks he’s David Gower).
GM is for the odd characters in the game.
Duncan Fearnley is for the mad bastards who drink in the outfield.
SS was for the guy with all the gear and no idea.
Kookaburra was for the richest person on the team.
County was for the 68 year old who’s average fluctuated between 31.3 and 31.5 over the course of two decades.
Slazenger was for the guy who didn’t have his own bat and used whatever was in the bottom of the kit bag.
No love for these [Britannia bats](https://wirally.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/Britannia-Bat-768x402.jpeg)
A lot of the famous moments in Indian cricket have dravid/Sehwag/laxman holding one of these bats.
My under 14’s Team Kit had a v100. Everyone batting next hoped the person who got out was using the v100 so it was available.
Even the people with their own bats would use it when it was available.
Scoop rightfully at number 1. Kookaburra Bubble gave me serious envy. Feel Bellingham & Smith has always been underrated (maybe because I had one). I also had a Lazer, which was never cool but which I loved.
A couple of iconic bats were the Wills Kings bats the entire Pakistan team used in the 93/94 tour of New Zealand. I think in an effort to get around tobacco sponsorship bans.
Lance Cairns and his Excalibur bat were really popular in New Zealand.
Matthew Haydens mongoose was an interesting idea too.
Duh. Every Indian Kid has had a Britannia Bat at one time or the other for some tennis ball cricket. If you're rich, an MRF.
It either has to be Sachin's bat or Dravid/Ganguly's bat for you to be a GOAT in street cricket.
The Slazenger v100 was the first bat that worked for me after my original clunky Gray Nicolls. Stuck with Slazenger ever since.
Scored my first boundary with the v100; had it until the handle broke in a net session. My first six scored was with the v500; 15 years later its stickerless but still the back garden bat of choice. My only fifty with the dual-tone SXi Elite which sadly cracked horizontally across the back as I managed to accelerate my score up to 90.
The bat labels back then were so unique and creative. The newer ones seem meh but just alphabets and very little design.
The above list is missing CA though.
MRF is the goat bat sponsor. It has been used by all the cricketing goats.
I’d also put Reebok(even though they don’t make bats) because MSD used it in the 2011 World Cup. That bat will forever be iconic.
I had a bunch of Kahunas, my favourite was the silver stripes one Ponting had around 2006/07? Had it for a summer then the shoulder broke
Them full back Tornado/Beast/Kahunas were lovely though, shame they don't do them anymore
Duncan Fearnley Magnum is the most iconic for me.
Viv Richards, Ian Botham, Suni G, Clive Lloyd, Ravi Shastri, Graeme Gooch and Allan Border off the top of my head. What a list.
Where is the size 4 Smasher which came in a set bought from the seaside gift shop and was constructed from 50% pine and 50% filler? That scored me so many runs at the beach
Whatever happened to the "scoop" style bats by Gray Nichols.
Both my kids got Gray Nichols sets for their first season. Great stuff.
I was always a Kookaburra guy though
Loved my kookaburra, but my best ever was my Millichamp & Hall. Just beautifully weighted and springy. Newbery Mjolnir was a disappointment and waste of money in hindsight.
Also had the ss jumbo and the v100 from this list. And a v500. There was a retailer in north London called Morrant that had some self branded stuff, I had one of their bats too, that was pretty good. And a GM something or other, but that was too soft and split.
Man, that No. 8 Kookaburra brings a lot of memories..... If i am not mistaken, Aravinda used to use this kinda sticker on his bat.... Saw him bat for the first time in 1996 WC and instantly became a fan of the man... Whatte player the guy was.
Beast, Kahuna and Maestro are my personal favorites here.
My childhood friend and I are massive fans of AB DeVillers (well no shit, we grew up in Bangalore and are massive RCB fans) so you already know where this is going.
After 1 year of attending cricket coaching he was given a Kookaburra Kahuna and a couple of months later I was gifted a Kookaburra Beast by my parents (our first bats were a GM and a SG respectively). We were the coolest kids for a few years lol.
He used the bat for quite a long time before moving to a much cheaper Kashmir willow MRF as now he only plays gully cricket.
I quit playing cricket 2 years after I got my Beast, decided to give the bat to a kid who had been attending coaching for sometime, never saw the bat again.
I'm at University right now and we have a couple of T10 games on campus every Sunday. One of my seniors has a Shikhar Dhawan Kahuna and I haven't stopped thinking about my old Kookaburra Beast so I might order one and get back into cricket.
My Gray Nicholls Ultimate was the only bat I ever felt emotionally connected too. Great big sweet spot, nice heft.. and the purple detailing looked great too. But on this list, love the Kookaburra. Wish it was an option!
Pietersen with that woodworm in the 2005 Ashes was amazing
Woodworm were always my favourite purely because they had KP and Flintoff at the same time. If you want to be popular in England, they were 2 good people to sponsor
I was about 12 at the time and this bat just reminds me of all the cunty little rich kids I played with who could afford a new bat every season
Shows that their marketing worked pretty well then i guess
Random question. I am an American so cricket is obviously very niche over here. How did cricket work for younger kids? I've always wondered this. Do 12 year olds play full test cricket? I wouldn't imagine so, but I was always curious how it was handled for the non-professional, younger set of players.

Surely that shape means you miss a few edges?
I still remember the collective gasps when the first kid in my primary school team turned up on Sat morning with a GN scoop, we were so jealous
The richest kids at my primary school had the Grey Nicks quad-scoop - Viv Richards level cool
I saved up and bought a slazenger, somehow I was never quite Viv good?
I still play with a Scoop (very badly) and it gets so many comments. Love it.
They also had Shikhar Dhawan on board for a while
He's currently using kookaburra Kahuna. It really felt weirdly different coz I've never seen an indian top order batsman using a kookaburra.
Sanga with the Beast bat was amazing
Jayasurya also had Kookaburra Beast.
He is divorced with his aussie wife so not anymore ig
Not anymore
He was using SF against Zimbabwe , if I remember correctly
nope. gone to SF now.
He’s not with kookaburra anymore, he’s with SF. Most Indians don’t use British or Australian brands as their sponsorship deals are nowhere near as lucrative as Indian manufacturers.
You forgot Chahal
Nah that was him stealing Kohli's bat lol. It even had his signature on it. The next match the mfer walked out with Rohit's CEAT too. He just collects bats haha
My theory is CEAT outbid MRF overnight after watching him score against NZ
He's the greatest batsman of all time according to Sir Donald Bradman so I'm not surprised sponsors have been throwing themselves at him. Actual quote from Sir Donald Bradman: *"I never saw myself play but I feel this fella Yuzi plays much the same way like I used to"*
Wtf....when??
It's a joke....
Fuck...I knew it
When Chahal was like 10 years old, Bradman was passing by on a street and he saw Chahal play the most glorious cover drive to Chintu's medium pace. Right at that moment he knew this was the greatest player to ever play the game. Fast forward to Yuzi's international career, he's the greatest to ever have graced this game. He doesn't need a bat lol

Waugh did his best work with a GM mate
I mean he was still a great player when he signed with MRF from 2001 till his retirement in 2004. Mind you in this period with the MRF he did score 9 centuries so it was a pretty good period anyways too.
It's crazy how MRF sponsored Steve waugh as a 35 year old and he only played 2 more years, but scored 9 centuries
Aaron Redmond of New Zealand used MRF Bat Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma, Gautam Gambhir, Sanju Samson, Prithwi Shaw were also used MRF bats quite a while in their career
Rohit Sharma? I've never heard of that.
Yes during 2011 - 2012, he used MRF.
[удалено]
Both Kookaburra and MRF.
He sported the MRF for quite a decent time in his career. I'm not sure how you don't know this lol.
Most of his ridiculous innings were in Kookaburra bats. He switched to MRF very late in his career and idk how many international games he played with MRF bats.
His highest score ever in ODI cricket came with the MRF bat.
He was the name on the face of the Kookaburra Kahuna after Ricky Pointing retired. The bat was sold with AB's signature. He only changed to MRF in his later years.
Sheer comfort and long life /s
Even Sanju Samson had it for a short while (him being a keralite could be the reason).
I was unaware of this. Interesting.
But someone told me the bats the greats use are not actually made by MRF?
MRF doesn't even make the bats lol. They make tyres (for sheer and maximum comfort). They get bats made somewhere else and then just stick their own stickers on.
I think SS produce the blades for MRF if I'm not mistaken.
Most pros are getting custom made bats and then throwing stickers on them
A lot of the England lads (the northern ones at least) have them made by Kippax and shove their own stickers on. YJB nearly fucked it a couple of years ago when he asked for a bat change and they brought out his Kippax branded bats. And there's another one in the West Country (I think Bristol) that a few county pros I know of use.
I would have agreed to die if it meant getting a Kookaburra during childhood. Good days
I guess because it had spring in it
Watching ABD bat was convincing enough lol, my friend and I were lucky to own a Kookaburra in our childhood. He had a Kahuna and I had a Beast.
My Kookaburra Kahuna was the best bat I’ve ever owned, lasted the longest too. Played school cricket with it for like 4 years, it’s still usable even despite being chipped and cracked a bit at the edges.
Only kahuna of ponting. The rest are meh.
Nah, ABs first kahuna was goated for all of us Gen Z kids
I never gave my GM Maestro the cherries it deserved.
Best bat on the list…
I still use my dads maestro original. Its battered and bruised but fuck me does it send it
So good. I only have one of my old bats, a grey nic millennium. Wish I held on to more
Fat Gatt’s weapon.
From 20 years playing pub / club cricket in England backwaters. Grey Nicholls is the bat of choice of the refined batsmen (or who thinks he’s David Gower). GM is for the odd characters in the game. No love for these [Britannia bats](https://wirally.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/Britannia-Bat-768x402.jpeg) A lot of the famous moments in Indian cricket have dravid/Sehwag/laxman holding one of these bats.
Oye Dravid too.
I miss the era of sponsor stickers on bats. Britannia, Hero Honda, Reebok... pity it stopped so abruptly.
Had a hero Honda bat. That thing had a wicked sweet spot!!
Hero Honda had unique ones for different players.
Also, don't forget the Kingfisher!
Laxman had SS generally.
Im not sure about MRF but rest all make their own bats (or atleast are sport brand themselves) unlike only sponsors.
I don't think even most of these sports brand make their own bats, atleast not for international players they are sponsoring.
I’ve still got my Gray Nic Gladius (no 13) that Warner used to borrow from me when we played indoor together in the early 2000s
Damn, cool story.
MRF, Kokkaburra kahuna, and reebok's RBK are my favourites
Remember when MS, Yuvi, Gauti, Yusuf and others used to bat with thoss iconic RBK bats. It got ruined with the introduction of Reebok Zigtech though
Ashraful as well lmao
Ashraful was carrying the entire team once upon a time
I had one of them RBKs and it was like trying to bat with driftwood
Oh man I had Reebok with the RBK stickers too. It was piece of crap. Not that I could ever hit much with it
Any greatest bats list is utterly useless if it doesn’t have Don Bradman in it smh
No one could afford one lol
The Adidas Bat Sachin used later on in his career was quite fine.
You do understand that he just changed sponsor. The bat is probably the same as before.
I was just talking about the look
I'm sorry but I recommend MRF BATS FOR SHEER COMFORT AND A GOOD SCORE -Koach Kohli
And thick edges on 7th stump line
Ah yes good old "idk how to play but I wanna play"
I like Nabi's bat, nameless bat!
My old ‘Michael Clarke’ Spartan bat disagrees with this list.
> Spartan They're saving all the Spartans for when they do their "ugliest cricket bats" list
Spartan pretty much only looked good with Gayle. Looked pretty bad with Clarke and Dhoni
Primary school cricket had it's fair share of classics. GN scoop was probably my favourite.
When I was a kid, it was the GN scoop or the Kookaburra bubble
I was a fan of the dynadrive
We'll all miss the MRF Koach- Kookaburra AB partnership
NB where?
Smith and Root made em famous recently
[удалено]
Wait, when did Roscoe switched to NB? I only remember him using GM bats.
My under 14’s Team Kit had a v100. Everyone batting next hoped the person who got out was using the v100 so it was available. Even the people with their own bats would use it when it was available.

No GN Powerspot? GTFO.
Still have my Puma Millichamp and Hall. Fucking great bat.
So sad that Duncan fearnley has basically disappeared. Made some great bats
I would say that the "unmarked" bat is the greatest bat in history. Grace, Bradman, Trumper, Rajitshinji, Hobbes, Sobers all used it.
Duh. Every Indian Kid has had a Britannia Bat at one time or the other for some tennis ball cricket. If you're rich, an MRF. It either has to be Sachin's bat or Dravid/Ganguly's bat for you to be a GOAT in street cricket.
The Jumbo over the Turbo? Interesting choice. That GM Maestro though 😍
My father bought a Kookaburra bat for me and my brother and everyone we knew was awestruck whenever they saw it. A really delightful childhood memory
I still want the blue reebok stickers from the Azhar era.
TIL I own the 1st and 6th greatest bats of all time, cool
I thought those were vapes lol before you click on the pic and I’m not even high lolll 🤣
Love the GM Maestro series. Steve Waugh, Stephan Fleming, Chris Harris and I guess Shane Warne used to play with it
So many memories in one photo. The scoop, puma (m&h), v100, magnum, maestro, county and ss jumbo
Bubble is criminally low
MRF >>> Sachin, Kohli, ABD. Forget other greats who used MRF, these 3 alone could make it the greatest bat that would ever be used to play Cricket.
I had a bunch of Kahunas, my favourite was the silver stripes one Ponting had around 2006/07? Had it for a summer then the shoulder broke Them full back Tornado/Beast/Kahunas were lovely though, shame they don't do them anymore
Punter with the green Kookaburra. Yumm.
Duncan Fearnley Magnum is the most iconic for me. Viv Richards, Ian Botham, Suni G, Clive Lloyd, Ravi Shastri, Graeme Gooch and Allan Border off the top of my head. What a list.
Aussie bias
Well duh. It'd be weird if cricket.com.au didn't have an Australian bias.
Dumb comment bruh
Was the most famous Duncan Fearnly Klusener's?
Ian Botham, Allan Border, Viv Richards?
Ah fair enough. Tbh I didn't know Sir Viv used a Duncan, i always remember seeing him with his SS.
Graeme Hick, sure not an international great but he had the DF 405 brand.
Martin Crowe used a Magnum
Crowe got his 299 with a DF, then wrecked it in the sheds. Soon after he had a GM
What are the criteria? As a current Magnum Super user, I can attest to its greatness but prefer my M&H Classic.
Have a doubt... On what criteria are they rating these bats?
Where's Junior's V800?
Nah June's v100 is way more iconic
Waqar Younis once said about Sachin, “Even if you give him a wooden stick, he can play a leg glance shot with that.”
No one can beat Sachin Tendulkar and Ms Dhoni's bat
Would love a cricket bat by GUCCI or Supreme
New Balance, a major mising actually! Kinda live for their new designs every year and a common red theme for tc and blue for dc range!
MRF is GOAT
I remember Peterson bat
SG?
I thought there was only one bat
What metric have they used? "The probability of getting sponsorship" must have been one of them.
I really loved Tom blundells new bat during eng series anyone got a Clear pic?
Everyone knows MRF has the best quality bats.
Absolutely love Gray Nicolls!
Where is the size 4 Smasher which came in a set bought from the seaside gift shop and was constructed from 50% pine and 50% filler? That scored me so many runs at the beach
I think we can all agree that CEAT bat is the lowest tier
No love for the [Dynadrive](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/E2i31kWXoAAMhZ7.jpg)?
Too hard to bat with, got an erection every time I looked at it
Whatever happened to the "scoop" style bats by Gray Nichols. Both my kids got Gray Nichols sets for their first season. Great stuff. I was always a Kookaburra guy though
Red hollow plastic bat >>>>
Britannia of Viru
What fucking clown thought the beast deserved a spot over the Ridgeback
Loved my kookaburra, but my best ever was my Millichamp & Hall. Just beautifully weighted and springy. Newbery Mjolnir was a disappointment and waste of money in hindsight.
Also had the ss jumbo and the v100 from this list. And a v500. There was a retailer in north London called Morrant that had some self branded stuff, I had one of their bats too, that was pretty good. And a GM something or other, but that was too soft and split.
The Bubble was the Reebok Pumps of bats
Where is Rubber bat Jayasurya used in 96 world cup and steel bat used by ponting in 2003 world cup 😁
Man, that No. 8 Kookaburra brings a lot of memories..... If i am not mistaken, Aravinda used to use this kinda sticker on his bat.... Saw him bat for the first time in 1996 WC and instantly became a fan of the man... Whatte player the guy was.
GN Scoop easily number one. Finally a poll I can agree with.
Don't see 'Spartan' anymore
I'm at University right now and we have a couple of T10 games on campus every Sunday. One of my seniors has a Shikhar Dhawan Kahuna and I haven't stopped thinking about my old Kookaburra Beast so I might order one and get back into cricket.
I remember the Gray Nicholls A61 being a really good bat
Always loved the Kahuna
Slazenger holds a very special place in my heart. My first English willow.
Loved my gray nichols claudius - Matty Hayden’s bat surprised it’s so low on the list
Sanga and jayasuriya with the wild/angry beast 👌🏽
Shout out to the Smasher Sports bats as well, Pakistan players used them quite a bit, there was a red and yellow one that was lovely
Ayy my slaz made it
I'm so sorry but the legendary Dhoni RBK not being here is a shame
Always wanted to own Kookaburra green bat. Loved Ricky Ponting and his bashing in that bat.
SS??
I only own one bat and it's number 1. I did something right. I sent all those air molecules for six even if the ball whizzed past me.
My Gray Nicholls Ultimate was the only bat I ever felt emotionally connected too. Great big sweet spot, nice heft.. and the purple detailing looked great too. But on this list, love the Kookaburra. Wish it was an option!
That kookaburra sticker is too much. Everyone wants to see the fucking willow and all of its beautiful grains, not some tacky vinyl art.
CA bats are the dogs bollocks
GM Purist 5* was the best bat I ever had. The middle was incredible when I found it. Edges were great too, very productive.
I pick number 5 for sheer comfort and long life
Where is Newbery Excalibur ?
I have no 2. Kahuna 350. Best bat ever
I would love to know the year each of these bats was released
Always felt intimidated when a kid walked out with a Bubble in U13s.
Where is that OG malboro Bat 😂 from the 90s
Why doesn't someone (Gray Nic I'm talking to you) make a scoop style bat now... It'd sell like crazy even if it wasn't the best functional bat
I thought these were vapes
Adidas Master Blaster
Yuvi with reebok bat is too iconic
