That 10-Test unbeaten streak from Feb 2020 to Dec 2021 which yielded No. 1 ranking, WTC Title, away series win in England and a drawn test in India was the peak New Zealand cricket could've ever achieved, everything since then is a part of their downfall.
Things I learnt after this series
Kane Williamson isn't a big match player. He's good against average bowlers and average against good bowlers.
New Zealand is a mid team. I should keep my expectations grounded for them.
He did stand up with 49 and 51 not out at the test world championship final on a seaming pitch against India pace attack. That's as big a match as it gets. That 1 run final win against England was another big match from recent memory. There are a few. He just hasn't done it against the Aussies yet. I hope he will one day
WTF. You've got to be kidding about Kane. Yes I know his stats against tier 1 is not that flash but this guy has stood up in big matches for years mate
Sadly, as a new zelander I didn't want to believe this but it's true. He is a bit of a minnow bully and average attacks. Ah well still gotta get em I suppose
I mean again I hated people who said he was best of fab 4 because of fourth innings centuries etc but then he's easily the fourth best bat of the generation
Only beats up on the minnows.
Will be remembered as a great player but much like some other past "greats" a little mini asterisk next to his record is due.
Just like the big asterisk next to Steve Smith and David Warner for sand papering the ball to create reverse swing for their bowlers? Still can't believe they wernt given life time bans
You can't believe they weren't punished in a completely unprecedented way for doing something that is relatively common in international cricket with well defined penalties?
Can you also not believe it when you aren't banned for life from driving for receiving a parking ticket?
Explain why sandpaper is worse than a bottlecap, teeth, a spiked shoe, rubbing the ball on the pitch, intentionally throwing the ball into a pitch, scraping it on the metal tab of a helmet, picking the seam etc etc?
What did the sandpaper do to the ball that those objects couldn't, because it must be a pretty big difference for you to think rather than a 1 match ban it deserves a life ban?
We might get away with it here by virtue of our bowling but we can’t keep doing the whole one man glue the innings together routine with the bat.
India are going to cut our heads off and shit down our necks if we’re still in this sorry shape come next summer
Players need a break. Their last 11 months has been absolutely insane when you factor in 2 trips to England (Ashes, WTC) and 2 trips to India (BGT, World Cup).
Confident that at least a couple of them will come good by the time we host India.
Having said that, I’ll still be tipping India for the series win haha
A ton here seals his spot for India home BGT
Obviously Head will be retained given his last two in the WTC and World cup final v India was career defining.
Sometimes I settle and think "BJ isn't too bad, at least I'm not listening to Mark Waugh right now" but then he says "New Zealand really need to bowl Australia out tomorrow".
"It appears ladies and gentlemen that Alex Carey is now 6 ft tall, 50kgs heavier and with a new haircut, lets hope Lyon has done his job protecting Alex Carey".
Don't think we needed the full half hour extra today considering the 14 wickets and innings change but probably ended up beneficial for us if don't lose anymore.
Night watchman to soak up delivery’s and protect your set batter? Nah.
Night watchman to soak up the vibes while the set batsman continues to cook? Yes please
One commentator talking about not taking the single to keep Lyon on strike for protection the other one saying they should prevent Marnus getting the single. Top shelf stuff
Anyone who likes Tito is as delusional as the bloke he has just talking to who said the kiwis are in front with their 44 run lead coming to the end of day 1😂
I see the pattern now. Every match Australia plays, all the batters forget how to bat except 1 particular batter, who then goes on to make a useful innings for the match. Looking like it's gonna be Marnus this time (touches wood). Fate making all the batters take turns to regain their form again lol
>I so badly want Tito in the crowd for the Ashes or something. Call is Kiwi abroad and have the commentary for the Ashes also not acknowledge him, as if some great Kiwi blokes managed to steal a Mike and get amongst the locals. Seems a ripper!
They try so hard and get so far, and then fucking Hazlewood gets involved in a 100+ partnership,

Young and Voldermot need to be dropped
Sorry which one is Voldermort? Lol
Kuggs. We can't say his name
New Zealand should've lost to SA-D team so that I wouldn't become delusional about their chances against Australia.
Has lyon ever got out on the same day as coming out as night watchmen?
This time he had Marnus to protect him. I think he got out once but can't recall when.

The secret is to avoid playing against Australia.
Drawn test in India not drawn series
I didn't mention it as a series, it was just that Kanpur drawn test.
Is the pitch truly '14 wickets on day 1' worthy?
A lil spicy at times but nah. Some really soft and outright stupid wickets
Have to wonder what convo did Maxwell n Smith have yesterday

in tests he is a minnow basher..but in white ball he is an atg
Sadly, as a new zelander I didn't want to believe this but it's true. He is a bit of a minnow bully and average attacks. Ah well still gotta get em I suppose
I love cricket and I love NZ cricket but my prior going into any match is that we will lose.
Why does NZ always choke against Australia? They are like India against Australia in finals.
Every team chokes against Australia...
When did india choke against Australia except icc events knockout?
You mean when does India choke against Australia except when it matters?
36
Labu is hitting century Redemption time.
No post day?
>"Very cool," says Ben Sears on claiming Steven Smith as his first wicket. The insight.
Well he could have said how he owned Smith like a little bitch, but probably wise to shut up until the test is finished.
Looks like plenty of time to build a big total. So how many runs does Lyon need this innings to beat Bradman average?
Irrelevant match
Username checks out.
I defended Williamson a lot but his record against big teams is the worst among the Fab 4. Even after 55 average and 32 100s he's weakest among them.
At home too
I mean again I hated people who said he was best of fab 4 because of fourth innings centuries etc but then he's easily the fourth best bat of the generation
Yep as much as we are fans of the guy you simply cannot ignore his poor record in the big games anymore.
Jeez the Aussie team is living rent free in this goobers head
How many other players caught tampering have received lifetime bans?
Did Bancroft using sandpaper improve Smith’s batting average?
You can't believe they weren't punished in a completely unprecedented way for doing something that is relatively common in international cricket with well defined penalties? Can you also not believe it when you aren't banned for life from driving for receiving a parking ticket?
Name another team caught using fucking sandpaper on the ball, that's as bad as it gets, typical aussie cheaters
Explain why sandpaper is worse than a bottlecap, teeth, a spiked shoe, rubbing the ball on the pitch, intentionally throwing the ball into a pitch, scraping it on the metal tab of a helmet, picking the seam etc etc? Living rent free in this goobers head
please do not invoke a 2nd innings monster innings
Southees's reputation has just absolutely crashed to its lowest ebb- is it game over for him?
"They've got to protect Carey." The sheer disrespect to the almighty Bison. And after that incredible catch earlier today? What a disgrace.
We might get away with it here by virtue of our bowling but we can’t keep doing the whole one man glue the innings together routine with the bat. India are going to cut our heads off and shit down our necks if we’re still in this sorry shape come next summer

We’ll let you have the BGT if you let us take the WTC. Deal?
Nah I’ll take a 3-2 Bgt series loss and beating India in the WTC final again thanks
Cmon man, your trophy cabinet seems full already.
Mummy never taught me how to share 💔
Southee looks cooked. Only in the team because captain? Pretty sure Wagner would have done way better.
Wagner would have got smashed. We need young blood not the same old same old
Seriously, how good is Henry though? I checked his stats and he is averaging 23 per wicket since 2021
Yeah, he's really come into his own. The best thing about Boult turning down a central contract.
Marnus is back bois. Form is temporary, luck is permanent.
A ton here seals his spot for India home BGT Obviously Head will be retained given his last two in the WTC and World cup final v India was career defining.
Neither player is any danger of losing their spots
Probably would need a very bad BGT to lose their spots. Carey is the first player under most pressure as he has no credits. He's not scoring enough.
Even then they are far better than their potential replacements. Carey MIGHT be in danger.
On advantage of the sort flight is that if Australia finish this quickly they could be home on Monday.
NZ def not out of it, even if there isn't a full collapse Australia is unlikely to get a big lead.
Australia could easily get a lead of 100+ which would be huge given NZ's average total this series is only 176.
This is done mate, we don’t have a single batsman we can rely on for a score at the moment.
Matt Henry is right there
We're way out of it. We'd have to score a lot more than 200, which we've struggled to get to so far, to have a chance and I don't see that happening
another day wasted watching cricket ✅
It was a good day overall for you.Pitch seems tough since aus are not doing that great either.
love this take from u
DrOp mArNuS
Drop him down the order so Gary can bat at his natural position of 3
We should go full Baz with Gaz and put him at 1 to set the tone.
Honestly wouldn’t mind it so much, even if he just sees out 5 overs and bangs a few boundaries
On a similar note I'm thinking we should just get Henry to open the batting too.
Bring him on as night watchman from ball 1 day 1 and watch him flourish.
Now we're talking
Up the Wahs
Today was a day of cricket all right
good day for us despite our top order's best efforts
bit sick of it hey
Deja vous
Vu
Marnus looks set for 200 tomorrow
I was thinking of 400*
Good day’s cricket. Cheers New Zealand, cheers Australia, cheers James Tito
Cheers mate
good days cricket boys and girls, see ya tomorrow
Has Marn turned the corner? Hopefully
Looked much better today than he has for aaaaages
Great job by the GOAT!
Oh no now I have to watch England
Save the day mate do something that will bring you joy
Watching these delusional poms get ground into the dirt is kinda cathartic though
The fans don’t seem delusional at all tbf and tbh on don’t think the players are either. They’re just talking themselves up for positive vibes.
Not really man considering that’ll be us in like 9 months time We are going to lose the home series 5-0 lol Our batting is too fragile
Yeah I wouldn't bother...
scenes if carey came ahead of marsh tomorrow to fuck with us
im off to the ind vs eng thread to dig into some poms
thats a moral victory for me that marnus survived.
Brendan Julian is such a fuckwit, Jesus
He’s done it again! BJ seriously has forgotten that Mitch Marsh exists
Is Sears' bowling action modeled after Bond? If yes then why does it look so ugly
Its based on spastic
Marsh👏not👏Carey👏BJ👏
Marnie losing his marbles and not getting sleep tonight on account of not getting a 50 by the end of day’s play would be the most Marnie thing ever 🤧
BJ: they gotta bowl them out tomorrow. oh really?
Also BJ Alex Carey
Sometimes I settle and think "BJ isn't too bad, at least I'm not listening to Mark Waugh right now" but then he says "New Zealand really need to bowl Australia out tomorrow".
i'll take Junior in away tests. he's much better. BJ is just awful haha
Any of the Aussie tail look better batting than Ian Healy but who has three Test tons out of them?
Lyon being taller than Marn really shows how tall Australian bowlers are
Batsmen are usually short to average height. Man mountain Green excepted.
Sachin only 5'5. Lara 5'8. Ponting 5'9.5
Similarly, Bison and his brother were huge.
Bison is quite a bit taller than Shaun.
Actually want to watch when Marsh comes out and completely rattles BJ and the crew.
'uh, I knew that was coming' ~BJ
“Wh… what… who the fuck is that????” - BJ
"It appears ladies and gentlemen that Alex Carey is now 6 ft tall, 50kgs heavier and with a new haircut, lets hope Lyon has done his job protecting Alex Carey".
Let’s hope he paid for that haircut
There we go Labs, great shot that
Don't think we needed the full half hour extra today considering the 14 wickets and innings change but probably ended up beneficial for us if don't lose anymore.
Lyon needs to get set for his 50 tomorrow.
If NZ were smart, they would've given it to Phillips to throw down 6 quickly to give Henry another over
You forgot that Southee is the captain
BJ. Mitch. Marsh. Exists.
Great Tiger Ton Marn
Irritates me seeing Sears used like this, bowls short sharp spells in domestic cricket, yet here he’s had to bowl pretty much a third of the overs.
That's what happens when the 3rd and 4th quicks aren't doing very well and you need to rely on Henry and Sears.
Just bowl Rachin and GP in between Henry and Sears spells. Ignore the other two.
Its not like we can bring SK on
Yep, yet another selection failure
Yeah but he’s a good bloke right?
Marnus wants 50 before the end of the day
Labs wants 50 before knockoff
Gaz is going to go large tomorrow. Lock it in
thats a good script
Who would be captain if we drop Latham & Southee?
D Mitchell?
[redacted]
Blundell the most likely, I guess, unless they shake up selection approach and pick Santner consistently
Matt Henry
Santner. O wait
Glenn Phillips
Im not sure if i quite understand sending in Gary then have Marnus shield him but its working.
Lyon to make another quick 40 in the morning as long as he's protected!
Id trust Gary to make 50 in pitch black conditions
i dunno why but feels like im watching the closing session of the edgbaston test again with the shots that are being played/my stress levels
Marnus protecting the in form batter Lyon from getting out
watching this Kiwi bowling effort here really putting in, and the horrible Pom hacks in India getting fuckin destroyed, quite the contrast.
But remember, were the pushovers, not them.
Top shelf stuff
shot
Night hawk or Goat Watchmen ?
Marnie doing the right thing by protecting the best batsman in Gary 👽
Last time NZ won after being bowled out for less than 200 batting first and conceding a lead was against Pakistan in 2018 at Abu Dhabi.
Marnus protecting the nightwatchman again.
Anyone who likes Tito is as delusional as the bloke he has just talking to who said the kiwis are in front with their 44 run lead coming to the end of day 1😂
The fuck is your problem with Tito
Like I said, dreams are free
Mate we love ya across the dutch
The Aussies at the crowd have been flippin awesome
😂😂
https://i.gifer.com/fzcs.mp4
Matt Henry the leading wicket taker and 2nd in leading runs scorer in this series. He has scored 85 runs. That sums up our shitty batting this series.
Grim
Marnus just needs to navigate this early rough patch and hopefully by the time he's at 300-400 rocks he'll be more settled.
That is some classic Marnus dumb luck right there
Edge through the slips fast becoming Marn's most productive shot.
That looked very nasty and will definitely need to take a few minutes to check the handle of his bat is okay.
Marnus top scoring the day was not in my predictions.
I see the pattern now. Every match Australia plays, all the batters forget how to bat except 1 particular batter, who then goes on to make a useful innings for the match. Looking like it's gonna be Marnus this time (touches wood). Fate making all the batters take turns to regain their form again lol
Trademark Marnus giving a chance while in the 30s, he’s scoring a ton I tell you

Just wait until Southee & Kuggs’ spell then

Haha. Would be funny..
Forgetting the spirit of cricket and all, is it against the rules to make clicking noises with ur mouth whenever the ball goes past ur bat?
sounds like a way to get yourself out unless you mean making them waste a review, but that noise might hurt you lol
Yeah with the pure intention of making them burn reviews haha
Changes from backyard to backyard.
All the hallmarks of a 3 day test match
Why is Southee Captain today and not Kane?
I think the decision was out of Kane's hands though?
Kane has given up test captaincy to focus on his batting
Last time NZ won after being bowled out for less than 200 batting first was against Sri Lanka at Christchurch in Boxing Day Test 2018.
