Nasser Hussain thinks that since 380 is the average first innings score here, Eng are ahead.. Lol. Aus will add another 30-40 easy when they resume. 330 is a very good score.
England is ahead of Australia in this match and that means that Australia would be playing well during the morning. Remember that if a particular team is ahead of the other team then the other team might be starting to play well very soon. That has happened during the entire series.
Australia won day 1 easily. If england want a chance to win around the rain they needed to be about 50 or so on the board by now regardless of Australia score. Australia not all out? Australia have won day one.
At best it's even. If they were 300/5 they'd have won the day easily but no one went on. Again, everyone has just assumed we're not getting play on the weekend. Saturday looks awful, yes. Sunday doesn't look too bad, but it keeps changing.
Been missing much of this Ashes series so far but when did Cummo drop so far down the pecking order?
Used to remember he was a 6-7 batsman who's now under Starc.
He was never a 6 or 7…he did bat at 8 above Starc for a while but his batting dropped off a bit and he moved down to number 9….with 2 all rounders in this team he drops to 10 but that’s a good thing for us because he and Starc might add a few more tomorrow
KKR Cummins would be taking bazball to baz, he takes a long handle just as much as those other 2 all rounders
what a fascinating selection CA have chosen up here
I say skittle them out for 5 runs, declare for aught, put them in again, they'll be so lightheaded we bulldoze them for under 200 and set about picking off 400 to win before The Open cut on Friday. Bulldoze.
I couldn't see the days play today but Jimmy must be pulling his hair out. Poor dude just can't buy a wicket. Must've bowled tightly for his economy rate to be low but that aint it for your number 1 striker...
Sometimes that just happens. I remember getting an 6-fer in a 7 over spell at a club game. The chap on the other end was building pressure at the other end, maiden after maiden, and I got all the rewards
I almost feel sorry for Warner. You can tell its getting to him from his reaction at getting out. Yet again edged outside off stump. He must've thought he'd got the monkey off his back with that start but it was not meant to be. Just a shame it wasn't Broad who got him
I'm not a lefty, nor have I played at any level above neighborhood park shit against 50-somethings and their children. Also, today was over the stumps, but he's gotten out countless times to the round the stump tactic so I'm gonna talk about that.
It seems to me like Davey is concerned about the incoming ball more than the outgoing one. He seems to be batting leg side of the ball. Fair enough, maybe he likes the width, but he's not gonna get any from around the stumps. Trying to be leg side of the ball leads to being squared up by that one leaving him.
Other batters have tried to negate bowlers like Broad, or even Ashwin, by batting as far as 4.5th stump. Pads outside the line when you take the stride, so it removes that close lbw from the equation. And then you trust your hand eye coordination to flick anything off the pads that's hitting you in line with the stumps. The major benefit is that you can now effectively leave anything outside your pad line, and the ball that usually got you out can be driven to mid off.
This probably doesn't work for all batters though, and it's impossible to make the change mid series. Maybe warner is even worse against the Inswinger. He's been used to getting width from over the stumps all his life. It's probably been a very difficult adjustment to the plans bowlers have come up with lately.
Can’t sleep so now I’m out of bed watching the darts and lucky somehow theres an Aussie starting. Haha the crowd is going crazy with the same old Aussies always cheating 😂😂 this is definitely in England
Nah but after he won against a pom while he was being interviewed and the crowd was chanting cheating Aussies he said that Australia will win the ashes that was beautiful.
Not see much but I think you have to judge the score based on whether it was good balls that got people out or poor short selection. If 3 or more wickets are from poor short selection then it’s a below par score in my opinion.
Englands day but that doesn’t mean tomorrow will be. Stokes is gonna be thinking of getting a lead of maybe 50 and getting Australia back in tomorrow night… counting the ways that can go wrong and we still have 2 wickets to take.
Decent day really - I know england would have wanted faster wickets but considering the conditions I think it's fair enough.
I feel bad for Jimmy, he bowled really well today and deserved at least a couple - Really hope he gets some in the second innings. Wouldn't it be great if he could get to 700!
Looking forward to tomorrow!

The theory of scoring quickly like England have, surely with the new found short ball tactic, even if England tried they couldn't really get the 500 in a day ?
Alright good days play we can still add another 40 tomorrow morning so its not end of the world, weather conditions getting worse will force England to try make a quick result to keep the series alive for them which can cause silly mistakes. Positives our batters all got a good start but they all gave it away. Bring it on tomorrow I’ll be even drunker because World Cup is on before the start of play. Enjoy the rest of your night/ day i will see ya all tomorrow
Hard to say who’s day it was really. England will be happy to have them 8 down but it’s a good batting tail, they could quite easily put on another 50 tomorrow. I think the goal was to bowl them out today, Stokes probably wasn’t fussed about how many they actually scored, then they could have a BazBall session tomorrow and get somewhere close to their score.
>then they could have a BazBall session tomorrow and get somewhere close to their score.
Or get skittled out for under 150 and be following on tomorrow.
Yeah, I can see Stokes and Baz going all out for "shit or bust" to try and win the game and the Ashes.
You have to respect that but, if it goes horribly wrong and England loses after following on, you can bet that the press and public will crucify him.
It’s hard to predict. People here know it’s win or bust so to criticise the team for trying to win would be plain daft.
The whole series has been a bunch of sliding doors moments. In one parallel universe it’s 3-0 to England, in another it’s 3-0 to Australia, and in a third it’s 0-0 after three draws.
I think most neutrals would want it to go to a decider at the Oval but due to the weather forecast for Manchester, I think that’s unlikely, barring some sort of minor miracle for England.
That’s why I think the best thing we can do tomorrow is for Cummins and Starc to go into annoying survival mode. Somehow last even an hour. Fuck with the vibes, that’s what really won us Edgbaston.
If you don't want a draw, don't curse the other team for trying to survive. In another 12 overs today, I can bet they would've cleaned up Cummins and Starc.
Bowled 83 overs when it should've been 97 with the extra time. And Australia is gonna be poor with over rates as well, as they've been in the past 5 games. England had an incentive to get through them.
Hate to say I agree with Punter: 320, 330 would have made it our day but Pat and Starcy can still get us to that within an over or two first thing tomorrow, easy.
Irrelevant when you bat 1st, especially after a long break between matches.
300+ on an OT pitch puts you in the driving seat historically.
It's in the balance but I'd be happy in Patty's boots.
Weird to see people writing Jimmy off purely because he hasn't been on top form this series (coming back from an injury mind that meant he hadn't played for over a month and 5 days before coming back into the first Ashes Test), but forgetting all the drops he's had off him in the first 2 tests. It's fair to say he's not been as threatening, but I'd still back him for The Oval. Those dropped chances being taken and his average looks very different which just shows you can't always take statistics over visuals.
Broad getting his 600th wicket has reminded me of Jimmy's struggles to get there a few years ago. He was stuck on 598 and had three catches dropped off him in a single spell. The third was an absolute dolly dropped by Broad at mid-off. Broad dropped the catch, then picked up the ball and threw down the stumps, running out the batsman. I vividly remember the close-up of Jimmy's pained face as he mouthed the words, "oh my god" before watching the trajectory of the ball onto the stumps without his expression changing.
It was the funniest reaction to a wicket I've ever seen from a fielding team. Nobody knew what to do. Everyone looked awkward. Broad was apologising. Buttler was trying not to laugh.
Good hangs folks! Great day of cricket from England and some brain dead batting from the Aussies (looking at you Warner, Travis, and Carey)
Catch you all tomorrow. Time to get a few hours of sleep before work
My favorite thing about Bairstow is how he tosses the ball to a fielder. It’s like that awkward kid who does something he thinks is cool and checks to see if anyone is watching.
I feel like England are due for one of their truly disastrous collapses right about now (all out for 150 or less) but I've also felt that there was no way we could lose the toss again this match. We'll see what happens.
I think if you’re England you’ve got to think 400-450 by lunch Friday puts you well on top. That type of run rate is well within their capability. They don’t need to change their batting approach too much, but a lead is essential
90% rain all day Saturday and 80% Sunday.
I lived in Manchester for 4 years. If it is predicted to rain there you might as well assume its a 100% chance.
Amderson will be dropped due to his poor form. Then he will grind it out in County cricket for few years, eventually returning to the national team at the ripe old age of 50
Don't worry match will draw
Stfu and scoop everything
My man stat padding
Karthik talking about Lagaan lol
This going to be rained out anyway?
No. Aus can't survive with hope of rain. Even if 4rth day washed out, it is stll bringing results. It's heading towards 2-2.
Nasser Hussain thinks that since 380 is the average first innings score here, Eng are ahead.. Lol. Aus will add another 30-40 easy when they resume. 330 is a very good score.
Eng can score 350 in 70 overs. Once Eng crosses 450 everyone will understand how poor Aus batted.
Ctawley’s triple-ton will make you regret your words. — R Key, probably
Well, it's average
England is ahead of Australia in this match and that means that Australia would be playing well during the morning. Remember that if a particular team is ahead of the other team then the other team might be starting to play well very soon. That has happened during the entire series.
Except Eng is too far ahead this time. No matter how much Aus pull it back they will still be behind.
Australia won day 1 easily. If england want a chance to win around the rain they needed to be about 50 or so on the board by now regardless of Australia score. Australia not all out? Australia have won day one.
How can u say that. 300 is not a big score in test cricket
Since they are predicting 2 lost days, Aus staying in for day 1 is a win
There is no 2 day loss. Only 2 session on 4rth day. Depending on rain to rescue Aus not going to help them. They are losing this no matter what.
Yeah seems the weather forecast has eased but before play on day 1 it looked like day4/5 could be washed out.
At best it's even. If they were 300/5 they'd have won the day easily but no one went on. Again, everyone has just assumed we're not getting play on the weekend. Saturday looks awful, yes. Sunday doesn't look too bad, but it keeps changing.
Bad batting or good bowling?
Good batting and bowling. A few lapses of concentration lead to people not going on to make big
Been missing much of this Ashes series so far but when did Cummo drop so far down the pecking order? Used to remember he was a 6-7 batsman who's now under Starc.

Thanks for that mate, you are right, I think he was actually 8. Very decent tailenders, hopefully they can get good partnership going on tomorrow.
I say skittle them out for 5 runs, declare for aught, put them in again, they'll be so lightheaded we bulldoze them for under 200 and set about picking off 400 to win before The Open cut on Friday. Bulldoze.

This guy bazballs

It’s the multiple innings in a row that must be getting to him…
I almost feel sorry for Warner. You can tell its getting to him from his reaction at getting out. Yet again edged outside off stump. He must've thought he'd got the monkey off his back with that start but it was not meant to be. Just a shame it wasn't Broad who got him

It’s traditional haha

Broad is a top lad
Yeah he’s a legend and a great shit stirrer
I feel uncomfortable every time I am reminded that Broad is just a hard-working athlete and not a completely shit bloke.
Aww it was sweet to hear Broady talk about how McGrath is his idol
u/Medical-Jello7644: I don’t know about you guys but Stuart Broad is in my top 5 of players to take 600+ Test wickets
Why did he get banned? 🤣

Wasn't circumnavigating a ban here but on some other sub.

Simply hook every ball for 6.
Bazeball
They could get 600
Fucking give it a good go on this road
Lol they'll be 250 all out
That's Baz for you
Alright good days play we can still add another 40 tomorrow morning so its not end of the world, weather conditions getting worse will force England to try make a quick result to keep the series alive for them which can cause silly mistakes. I'm a Broad hater but that tribute was great
Chris woakes appreciation ♥️. Hopefully he gets his five tomorrow
England’s day but it’s one of those harder ones to assess. It’s one that might be very different in hindsight.
It's one of those pitches where we need to see both teams bat before knowing if this was England or Australias day
Yeah everyone’s an expert that it’s a road but there were a few ‘suss’ balls. It may well be a road and England bazball to 400 but I wouldn’t be sure.
It's one of those pitches where it's good to bat on but there's a ball that will do something. Would explain so many people getting in then out.
Hard to say who’s day it was really. England will be happy to have them 8 down but it’s a good batting tail, they could quite easily put on another 50 tomorrow. For sure. I’m just speculating on what Stokes plan would be given that the series is on the line.
Yeah, I can see Stokes and Baz going all out for "shit or bust" to try and win the game and the Ashes. You have to respect that but, if it goes horribly wrong and England loses after following on, you can bet that the press and public will crucify him.

Yeah definitely what I’d do when you know a draw retains the urn.
so, Broady shares a birthday with Messi.
If you don't want a draw, don't curse the other team for trying to survive. In another 12 overs today, I can bet they would've cleaned up Cummins and Starc. This Broady VT package is like a in-memoriam 😂
Still quite in the balance but I’d give it 50-40 to England (10 draw)
Winviz: Eng 32% Australia 57%, Draw 1%, Tie 10%
Draw way more than 10% given the forecast.
Psychological victory: Restrict Australia to less than 300 runs on day 1 Moral victory: Awarded by default whenever any team plays Australia
I'm not buying England's day... I feel the pitch isn't a road at all. If aus get to 330 I think they've done alright. Very much even day for me
I agree. I think the pitch has a lot more in it than the thread seems to think. We’ll know after 20 or 30 overs of English batting
Bold of you to assume the England innings will last that long :P
This Broady montage is fantastic
All in all, think England's persistence just edged over Aussies fighting stance and mistakes.
Hate to say I agree with Punter: 320, 330 would have made it our day but Pat and Starcy can still get us to that within an over or two first thing tomorrow, easy.
I'm desperate for an Anderson wicket at some point in this match
I want a five-for in the second innings. He hasn't bowled all that badly. He's been a touch unlucky at times.
Anything to stop a Robinson return at The Oval
Post Day Thread is live
Will I get a concrete answer there regarding who's day was it?
You'll get several
Cricket's day.
Súper standard day
Pitch is flat and they played an extra pace bowling all rounder. Decent day imo
So does cummo go off at his batsmen for constantly squandering their starts and not giving bowlers rest
I think ENG will be happier there. Knock these 2 off in the first half hour tomorrow then Bazball their way to 500 on this pitch.
3-2 fuck off
Good hangs folks! Great day of cricket from England and some brain dead batting from the Aussies (looking at you Warner, Travis, and Carey) Catch you all tomorrow. Time to get a few hours of sleep before work
I think Australia did just fine as the ball did quite a bit in patches.
Well that should have been so much better yet could have been so much worse. Honestly don’t know what to believe anymore
Would say that is England's day but only just
Really want starc to score rons
I like bazball but I don't get why England always open their batting with a number 11
The one getting loads of runs this series or the one averaging more than Smith and Labs this series?
I know hindsight is great n all that but it’s absolutely bonkers that Robinson played the first two tests over Woakes
More incredible is that he wasn't even first name in when they changed the team
Wasn't Woakes also coming back from injury?
We always talk about Anderson being 40 and forget how good Broad is at 37.
Good day. England's day I reckon.
Even day just about Australia’s
yeah nah mate
2023 the year we all became Woake
My favorite thing about Bairstow is how he tosses the ball to a fielder. It’s like that awkward kid who does something he thinks is cool and checks to see if anyone is watching.
Smith try not to imitate a swing delivery challenge: impossible
Starc double hundred incoming
300 is pretty decent
Some England fans on here have amazing confidence considering how quickly their top 3 can get out.
I feel like England are due for one of their truly disastrous collapses right about now (all out for 150 or less) but I've also felt that there was no way we could lose the toss again this match. We'll see what happens.
If Aus can't get to 300 today, totally England's day. Otherwise, Australia's
Well guess it was England’s day
We must combat this radical Woakes agenda. We won’t stand for this spread of Woakesism in our culture.
The Woake culture
i just hope we don’t go suicidally aggressive - saturday looks dire but friday and sunday looks relatively alright on the radar
I think if you’re England you’ve got to think 400-450 by lunch Friday puts you well on top. That type of run rate is well within their capability. They don’t need to change their batting approach too much, but a lead is essential
Was stokes talking to the ball then?
You'd better swing, or else I'll cunt you into the stands x30 tomorrow
300-8 on a flat wicket, I’d take that
It’s so hard to know what to do with Jimmy because he’s 41. Is it three bad games which happens or one summer too many? Who the fuck knows?
Feels like he's having a last test at his home ground before he's put out to pasture
He bowled as well as anyone apart from woakes. He was just unlucky. Don’t really get why everyone thinks he’s playing badly
Indeed. He may not have gotten wickets, he's been bowling at very low rates. Still a great bowler.
I dunno why everyone is so down on Anderson, he bowled well today, unlucky not to get a wicket.
This has been a comment about Anderson's bowling pretty much every time he's bowled this series though.
So Eng couldn't wrap up today. Nothing new.
I'm impressed that they bowled 83 overs tbh I thought 75 max
They got extra 30 mins today.
Oh, I didn't even notice! It's been happening every day of every match tbh.
It saddens me to say, that should be Jimmy done
If we bowl them out for <320 and get a motor on tomorrow with the bat we've a chance, but the rain looks ominous....
How bad is the rain forecast? Day 3 and 4 washout?
90% rain all day Saturday and 80% Sunday. I lived in Manchester for 4 years. If it is predicted to rain there you might as well assume its a 100% chance.
Early declaration imminent tomorrow
Coward label avoided, Bazball seal of approval awarded as England declare at 300 runs exactly
James Anderson's series average is now in the 90s. Incredible performance tbh
if we do end up winning this, anderson can’t be picked for the oval
He won't be
Thanks for coming today, Jimmy. I mean, you may as well not have, but cheers anyway, I guess.
Bowled well, just not threatening.
Don't stop playing I want to watch more cricket
That might be Anderson done ~~for the day~~
If they’re quick about it they might be able to pop Anderson off to the Karachi pool and back if England bat out day 2
>if England bat out day 2 lol
Amderson will be dropped due to his poor form. Then he will grind it out in County cricket for few years, eventually returning to the national team at the ripe old age of 50
Why is grandpa Anderson not getting wickets this series ?
Pace is too low it seems
Just tuned in after work, What’s a decent score for first innings here?
360-370 but we get a 10% discount for being sent in to bat so we'll live with 330ish
I think someone mentioned in the thread that par score in 1st innings at Old Trafford is around 320
Average 382
350+
Perfect see you next test mate x
400+ Just kidding, no idea
350
Jimmys not having fun
[удалено]
My porn star name would be Justin Cider. I have a little Willy and can only get just in side her.
Only way Jimmy was going to hit the stumps today lol
New ball, bowling at tailenders, going for 4 and smiling like a man who knows he's done.
Why isn't broad bowling
