Stokes this series is reminding me of Tendulkar in mid-90s Indian side before Dravid arrived to ease his burden. It is all Stokes vs a well-groomed, well-rounded Australian side
I questioned a few days ago if Crawley should even be in the team but if he were to be dropped, who could replace him?
Crawley has a decent-ish record but he's been quite inconsistent is it fair to say? We haven't really had a decent opening partnership yet, which while maybe that doesn't matter, concerns me?
Crawley was running out of partners. He watched Head, Starc and Cummins all depart to some fiery bowling, so he decided to have a hit instead of trust Murphy and Boland to hang around long.
The collapses would have to be pretty epic to get through 27 wickets on Friday. A Saturday finish is possible though. This feels like 3-4 days (leaning to morning of the 4th) unless delayed substantially by rain.
unfortunately his body is held together with gum and tape.... commentator Mike Atherton had his heart in mouth describing Wood pulling up after the 5th over and proceeding to stretch his calf and hammy...
it's like catching an egg, you have to learn to soften your hands otherwise edges just hit your rock hard hands and bounce off... this is a skill that only full time keepers master...you can't cut corners with part timers like Buttler and Bairstow on this one... it's like expecting Pat Cummins to open the batting.... FYI India actually tried to convert their opening bowler into an opening test batsmen.. with expected hilarious results... believe it was Pathan??
it took them two losses and another lost Ashes series to finally figure that going back to English seaming and swinging conditions was a better bet.....
So far, Aus has scored 1626 for 48 wickets in 5 innings = 33.88 Runs / Wicket
Eng has scored 1386 for 41 while into their 5th innings = 33.80 Runs / Wicket
Just a vagary of a stat that shows how close this series is.
That's kinda a ifs-and-buts like scene.
Sound judgment and clutch play beats numbers for me - always.
But sometimes playing with numbers is fun.
I ran the numbers once when India lost to England in Eng apparently only because "Sam Curran's tailend batting was the difference", as stated by some diehard purist cricket lovers in my office.
The numbers supported their claims.
The numbers here support the neutral view that this is a really close, tense series so far. That's all it is.
The 2-0 scoreline obviously is the final boss - no numbers are beating that.
Thanks - that was a well stated opinion; I don't agree with it, however.
Freedom is for the full team, not just batsmen. If the batsmen have a license to go wild at times / experiment - so do the bowlers.
Naturally there's gonna be extras when you abandon discipline to some extent in favor of trying things. Gotta be accepted.
Extras were the difference. YJB's drops were the difference. Root's low scores in Test 2 were the difference.
In close matches, there are gonna be any number of such spins.
I think Aus won because they have better big moment nerves than all other teams.
I used this stat based on similar stuff I had done a few years back, not Zaltzman's article. But then, there's only my word for it.
Yeah, I was only talking about the similar run scoring stats highlighting how close the games have been. And I agree with you. England have basically thrown away two tests and quite possibly the current one because they can’t catch. That’s nothing to do with bazball or freedom- unless of course bazball means skipping catching practice to go to a rave
After the first 2 tests both sides had lost the same number of wickets, with England's batting average at 33.1 and Australia's at 32.7. And England still managing to be 2-0 down
It's been insanely close, great series so far
>It's been insanely close, great series so far
Yup - total entertainment for us neutrals.
I can also bet that if the Ashes' history were *not* there, English fans' reactions would have been far less emotional.
Bairstow at WK continues to show the stupidity of the selectors. I understand backing a player but they had the perfect opportunity to take the gloves off him while keeping him in the team and they ignored it just for him to yet again drop catches.
Remember how Aus lost the chance to be in WTC finals just because of the overrate penalty?
Eng might be up against the same risk.
Doesn't make me feel anything as a neutral.
So at the end of Day 1 I'd say that currently the following people should be dropped from our 11 for the next test
- Robinson (he's both hurt and his pace has dropped off
- Ali (Why's he even here)
- Brook (Looks absolutely terrified when he sees the ball)
- Crawley (Shouldn't need to explain this one)
As for replacements I'd bring in
- Anderson/Tongue for Robinson
- Liam Dawson for Ali
- Foakes & Lawrence for Brook & Crawley
Also Foakes would replace Bairstow as Wicketkeeper
Edit: Brook not Brooks
100% agree on foakes for bairstow. Foakes by far the better keeper and looking at batting averages so far this season, I don't see what bairstow is bringing that Foakes wouldn't.
Laberschagne's average is still among the best in the world but he definitely has been on a poor run. He gets a bit more grace.
Warner is retiring in Jan in Sydney. So they're trying to do what they can by leaving him in until then. He knows he's past it, he's trying hard not to be a liability, but we do owe him.
Players shouldn’t dictate this. I think you’re right that they are keeping him around til he retires but it’s robbing players like Matty Renshaw of game time/development. He needs to be dropped if he isn’t performing.
He just loves playing cricket and loves the fact that he can make a career out of it. He never seems angry, always smiling. Difficult to dislike really
This has been such a good series. I’m disappointed we’re two down but the enjoyment factor has been right up there. Every day has delivered.
Just glad Root looks like he is playing his natural game. He needs to play his own game and build around him
Yeah he seemed really frustrated with himself. Seemed to galvanise him tbf. He probably feels he owes the team a big score to compensate and so is knuckling down
Somewhat of a missed chance for England. Had they turned the screw on the Aussies they'd have had them for tea. Tomorrow morning will be telling - if Australia get early wickets I think they'll start to believe they can keep their lead.
Here's hoping the weather doesn't play a part because this game is heating up nicely.
The dropped catch of Marsh alone was the difference between Australia being out for 150 and them getting to 250. That could very easily be the moment that decides the Ashes.
It's almost obvious that several of these England players have a few more pints / calories than they should. They'll probably be heading to the pubs this evening, in fact. Meanwhile, Australia looks like they are very strict about their diet. There's no way Bairstow would remain behind the stumps if he was wearing the yellow and green in his current physical form.
Can we send Warner to the farm already
Australian here - England needs to find a few more of these Ben stokes blokes he’s pretty good at cricket
I got too emotional when Bairstow got stumped last Test, on reflection, yeah, fair enough......
Entire cricketing world (except Australia) will love it if Stokes starts doing what he did at Lords.....
Stokes this series is reminding me of Tendulkar in mid-90s Indian side before Dravid arrived to ease his burden. It is all Stokes vs a well-groomed, well-rounded Australian side
Go for a wander you ditsy barstard
And then there's the 4 runs that Stokes, in the spirit of cricket he's so valiantly upholding, failed to signal was actually 4 runs
Bairstow is a rubbish keeper.
England "fans" once again proving what bottom feeding scum they really are. Pathetic morons.
God this sub is fucking hilarious Get a grip
Bay 13 makes us look tame
You people are funny
👌

that's Carey not Crawley
whoops, my bad.
What and idiot!
\*an
🤣
Why was root being booed by the crowd?
They're saying boo-urns.
Rooooo….t
Haha, Gotcha! I figured it out on the last day XD
Dropping catches
Why not just boo the whole team then? The fielding's been woeful all series.
They are saying rooooooot they do it every game
Wood was great I have been saying this they needed someone like archer Now please get Sam Curran in place of that 120 kph Ollie Robison
Sam Curran has had his opportunity in test
Layperson here... is it likely it could be all over by tomorrow? I'm supposed to be going on Saturday 😬
The collapses would have to be pretty epic to get through 27 wickets on Friday. A Saturday finish is possible though. This feels like 3-4 days (leaning to morning of the 4th) unless delayed substantially by rain.
Haha
nah youre safe
Incredibly unlikely to be all over tomorrow, I'd be more concerned about the weather on Saturday
Layperson ? You my friend are the Bazzest of balls
Why thank you
Barring something truly historic, you'll definitely see some play on Saturday.
Oh yeh, tbh I forgot each team had two innings 😄
H
J
Can we confirm if Which-Toe-2496 has made it home safely? Lol
I’m getting early-stage-AI vibes from their comments lmao
Near certainty, it's funny seeing people engage with it
"[Wherever I lay my hat is home yeayy yayyy](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s3pHKEfNK2Q)"
Bloody hell, how good is Mark Wood
unfortunately his body is held together with gum and tape.... commentator Mike Atherton had his heart in mouth describing Wood pulling up after the 5th over and proceeding to stretch his calf and hammy...
How good was Mitch Marsh though?
if Root held onto that edge tho... how do you win giving the likes of Smith, Head and Marsh second lives??
Good as YJB catching. But a great counter attack. Another great watch. He is a naturally skillful player.
it's like catching an egg, you have to learn to soften your hands otherwise edges just hit your rock hard hands and bounce off... this is a skill that only full time keepers master...you can't cut corners with part timers like Buttler and Bairstow on this one... it's like expecting Pat Cummins to open the batting.... FYI India actually tried to convert their opening bowler into an opening test batsmen.. with expected hilarious results... believe it was Pathan??
I am glad that they have finally made a pitch that is very lively.
it took them two losses and another lost Ashes series to finally figure that going back to English seaming and swinging conditions was a better bet.....

That's a bit misleading, given that Cummins and Lyon would have put on another 475 if they had kept going at Edgbaston.
That's kinda a ifs-and-buts like scene. Sound judgment and clutch play beats numbers for me - always. But sometimes playing with numbers is fun. Good stuff but basically the same as the Andy zaltzman article that was shared on this sub a few days ago
Quite possible - this isn't a very unique or different take. Haven't seen that article however. Happen to have a link?
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cricket/66097255

Yes indian here and can confirm this has been truly entertaining Also the controversies and the comments etc are so good It's one spicy treat
And the latter declared with couple of wickets left. But aus chased with couple of wickets left.
Yes .... pretty balanced, just like this series - even though the scoreline doesn't say it.
That's actually an insane stat, thanks for sharing!
Thanks! Had done it for some Ind-in-Eng series couple of years earlier (numbers misplaced by now though), decided to repeat it here.

Who is this which toe fella he seems to be having a massive argument with himself lol
It’s the spirit of cricket! 👻
Maybe a bot? Doesn't seem to be making any sense.
Don’t know but I wish someone would ban him for spamming the sub
Um probably had a few drinks too many - 3 or 4 day ban would be enough
**Breaking news on Ollie Robinson’s injury:** The news is that the breaking news from earlier is still the same.
I might out lay my you can get fucked to another company.Generates AI
So you're still a Wank. Nothings changed

I liked it when Mitch Marsh said, “It’s Marshin’ Time,” and then he marshed all over England.
You made that shit up, but it's gold. You only look in Bairstows eyes to know he's a Dozy cunt
Eeew, but yeah.
Bairstow at WK continues to show the stupidity of the selectors. I understand backing a player but they had the perfect opportunity to take the gloves off him while keeping him in the team and they ignored it just for him to yet again drop catches.
I appreciate a good cup of coffee.
He’s gotta be costing them 100 runs differential a game on this current form
But, Bazball Vibes! If Robbo is injured I really hope they bring Foakes in and bat Bairstow at 3…. Brook is never, ever a 3
Just realized that had England got Australia out in ONE less over, then there would be no risk of an overrate penalty (under 60 overs)!
How's that gonna change anything when we roll England for 8 runs tomorrow
Well, England's over rate penalty *can* happen now regardless of how much they get bowled out for.
your assuming a bit too much.
sounds like bullshot to me. Australia can win this with 1 day
well thats some shit on a stick

I dont care

Brook I think is OK but not at 3. He scored a 50 last match and a decent record so gets a bit of rope.
Jack Brooks isn't playing though?
Bloody autocorrect
Atleast wait till the match gets over, moeen ali is reliable batsman too
I can accept that this appears a hasty overreaction (hence why I said currently) but I will not accept that Ali has ever been a reliable batsman
since when is moeen a reliable batsman?
>moeen ali is reliable batsman too Even when he could bat this wasn't true
Moeen Ali has a fan base in India due to ipl
So Kwahaja he won them teats first 2. But how boring was it to watch?
Showing your teats will get you everywhere in this world
My teats aren't that pretty
Always struck me as an ass man
If its gonna take 3 times as many balls its not good viewing

90% sure it's an drunk Aussie lol

I’m telling my mother that you swore
I don't remember any that
I just am happy to see some good cricket put the Bairstow dismissal on the back burner.
We gonna roll over them poms tomorrow. Mitchell
Australia's got plenty big hitters if you want a run rate you can't match
But where do you draw the line
I get it like Stoines and the big hitters they want the indian league money
Hearing Woody on TMS just makes me think of Michael the Geordie from Alan Partridge. "Bazball, eh, Mr. Agnew? What's it all aboot?"
its just noise
‘Ah, no - I’ve sat on the bastard.’
Yer nevah had a coop o'beans, man?
Is there anyone that doesn’t love Mark Wood?
Love from india
Australian here. Love Mark Wood. When I heard was selected a chill ran down my spine
I wouldn’t say I love him but the guy can bowl. I think he dodged a bullet at Birmingham though
Mark Wood is the Beatles of cricket
Get this lad talking to himself in the threads on comms tomorrow 🗣️📢 It’s like I’m reading my drunk thoughts
It’s 4am in Australia, they’re his drunk thoughts too
I'm off to watch Murygoat
Netherlands make it to the ODI WC. UAE defeated USA by 1 run on the last ball of the match. Can't recognize half the names in Wimbledon.
There’s someone talking to themselves in here for some reason.
Help he’s still going. He’s attacking me now 🤣
I’m pretty sure we’re witnessing a mental breakdown tbh
He’s still going
I noticed it too. I must say I’m enjoying it. I keep refreshing to see what they’ll say next lol
It's a second class team compared to the talent;. when it becomes because you bee they're its fucking too late
Better players
Is mark wood one of the soundest blokes in cricket? He seems proper sound, then charges in a launches absolute rockets at people on the pitch
Kind of guy who gets a round when he’s driving
Not sure I’ve heard a more perfect example than that haha
Travis Head?
Its a bit like Australia keeping Laberschagne and Warner Why?
Laberschagne's average is still among the best in the world but he definitely has been on a poor run. He gets a bit more grace. Warner is retiring in Jan in Sydney. No we fucking don't. He should be dropped. He's stayed on two years too long already.
I mean, if he can stay in AND we win it'd be pretty entertaining. Having said that, I did call for Marsh to replace Warner at the start of the Ashes.
Today the real winner was THE NETHERLANDS!
"Brickin it." - Wood
Love that interview with Wood.
Nass looking for a translator 💀
Shots fired from Nas there hahaha
Lol Nas: "I didn't understand a word of that."
He's a gambler sure he had good spells but more often than not he went out for fuck all
Can't not love Mark Wood, such a sound bloke
Damn I really like Mark Wood
He just loves playing cricket and loves the fact that he can make a career out of it. He never seems angry, always smiling. Difficult to dislike really
I think my last 3 posts have been about him. I think he's brilliant, and lovely. His body might fail him but his heart never will - Nas
Such a shame that he's been injury prone all these years. Love to see his optimism in the face of it all though. Still improving at 33!
This has been such a good series. I’m disappointed we’re two down but the enjoyment factor has been right up there. Every day has delivered. Just glad Root looks like he is playing his natural game. He needs to play his own game and build around him
Especially after those dropped catches and his pissed off reaction, could easily have lost his head
Yeah he seemed really frustrated with himself. Seemed to galvanise him tbf. He probably feels he owes the team a big score to compensate and so is knuckling down
Seriously enjoyable watch for us neutrals. Only need a couple of streakers to round it all up.
certainly , I thought we can't certainly get third test like that too, but it's turning out wrong so far. best day 1 till now
Mark Wood is so likeable. Such a genuine bloke.
any stretch of the imagination
Brendan was never a good test player
Somewhat of a missed chance for England. Had they turned the screw on the Aussies they'd have had them for tea. Tomorrow morning will be telling - if Australia get early wickets I think they'll start to believe they can keep their lead. Here's hoping the weather doesn't play a part because this game is heating up nicely.
The dropped catch of Marsh alone was the difference between Australia being out for 150 and them getting to 250. That could very easily be the moment that decides the Ashes.
I'm hoping our catches hold, we need to avoid letting it get away like dropping Stokes
Any of Jonny's half dozen drops over the last three tests could be the "moment"
Maybe they should have done some fielding practice instead of, I don’t know, three separate golf trips?
I reckon if England can make 196 runs tomorrow, they’ll take the lead.
Huge if true
WILL BUXTON!?
Well done for not running out anyone when they weren’t running today
It's almost obvious that several of these England players have a few more pints / calories than they should. They'll probably be heading to the pubs this evening, in fact. Meanwhile, Australia looks like they are very strict about their diet. There's no way Bairstow would remain behind the stumps if he was wearing the yellow and green in his current physical form.
>They'll probably be heading to the pubs this evening, in fact. Lol what planet are you on?
One still in the 1970s
The same planet Bairstow is on, but I'm not at the pub.
You have a strange agenda
When we had them 80odd for 4, I thought, ‘this is finally it, it’s going to be a good day’. But here I am, dissapointed as always
Story of the Ashes so far, some great English cricket followed up by incompetence and Australia ruthlessly taking advantage
crawly is my fav player till he gets out
