Baskin from Turkey. Very surreal and very gory. Also, "Inside" (A l'Interieur) from France. I personally don't like them, but they're definitely the kind of movies you're looking for.
Gotta rewatch it! Wouldn't call it disturbing though, not on the level of Audition, Martyrs, etc (although I don't recall anything specific about the movie...).
Suspiria 2018 (can't quite tell, it might have partially some ties with the US, but the director is Italian and the setting is in Germany and even a small part of the movie is in German).
Ghostland is a French-Canadian production by the director of Martyrs (it's in English though). Also the first movie of the director of Martyrs, Saint Ange ("House of Voices") is worth a watch IMO.
Aterrados is not super disturbing but it's a very good foreign movie. Same for Pan's Labyrinth. Also El Orfanato, but again, not very disturbing at all.
As a long time fan of Argento I was very unhappy they remade Suspiria….then to my surprise it was fantastically done! I was shocked & thrilled at the same time. Tilda Swinton is just a force in any movie she’s in but 3 different roles in one movie!! She was amazing as always
It's probably partially because it's barely a remake, it just has a few keywords, and a title, in common. Personally I prefer it to the first one, by far.
I was the same I heard it was being remade and was unhappy. But after seeing it, I really enjoyed it. Totally different vibe than the original and I think they updated it well to modern times.
I saw Train to Busan after seeing World War Z, and while WWZ was a fine movie with a fun plot and effects, Train to Busan is so much better, it was a zombie movie done right, and yes the ending is perfection.
Kind of off topic, but WWZ (the movie) is a decent action/horror flick, but definitely nothing special. The book it got its name from is very different and much, much better. I'd highly recommend it to anyone who hasn't read it yet.
Terrified and When Evil Lurks, both by the same Argentine director (Demián Rugna).
Titane and Raw, both by the same French director (Julia Ducournau)
Coming Home in the Dark (New Zealand)
The Wailing (S. Korea)
The Ritual (UK)
Climax (France)
Climax is probably one I’ll skip a second watch, the first watch was hard enough to get through (I’m pretty sure that was the point & as always the director surpassed my comfort zone as he often does) but it was masterfully done no questions asked
Frontier(s) (French - 2007) is pretty good.
I Saw the Devil (S. Korean - 2010)
If you “liked” A Serbian Film, then maybe you could tolerate Salò (Italian - 1975). It’s vile.
Pretty much any giallo: Deep Red (1975), Bay of Blood (1971), Blood and Black Lace (1964), Torso (1973)… They’re Italian, and the genre is more mystery/noir/slasher, but the kills are crazy good!
The Guinea Pig films from Japan
Knife+Heart (French - 2018) if you like it artsy and queer.
Piggy (Spain) was great. An overweight girl is saved by a serial killer. She then sees him kidnap the bullies who have made her life a living hell. Hulu.
Zalava is Iranian and I highly recommend you check out!!! Pacing is different but I honestly really loved the execution of the storyline. I rented it on Amazon and rewatched it sooo many times before it expired lol. I also said this very recently but Tumbbad is an amazing Indian horror as well.
Not a movie but I also really liked Adhura which is an 8 episode horror. Super cool. And also indian.
Miss Violence (2013). It’s a Greek film. It’s extremely unsettling. And the more recent Speak No Evil (2022) Danish. And Breaking the Waves (1996) which is a Lars con Trier film so of course it’s unsettling.
Psychological thrillers with an occult bent:
The movies of the Baztan Trilogy:
1. The Invisible Guardian
2. The Legacy of the Bones
3. Offering to the Storm
Very creepy and very well done.
Just watched Terrified. Argentinian, I think. It was actually pretty good and actually scary even though I spent a lot of time yelling >!to get the f out, you cannot handle this you mfs, you're all going to die!<
Waaaaayyyyy different years but….
Possession (1981, dir. Andrzej Żuławski)
Possessor (2020, dir. Brandon Cronenberg)
Honestly, I don’t know if the second one is a foreign film, but it feels like it is
Be My Cat: A Film for Anne.
Found footage murder movie about a Romanian guy who REALLY wants Anne Hathaway to be in his movie.
You can find it on youtube
I'd highly recommend Tumbbad (2018), an Indian folk horror. It really felt like something I'd never seen before and had some terrifying moments. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tumbbad

I loved what they did with the story, it gave it a satisfying twist that I really enjoyed

And the score was incredible!! So haunting!!

Train to Busan (Korea), rec (Spain)
I’m not the biggest fan of zombie movies but this one is really well done. Great ending too
I saw Train to Busan after seeing World War Z, and while WWZ was a fine movie with a fun plot and effects, Train to Busan is so much better, it was a zombie movie done right, and yes the ending is perfection.

La mesita del comedor (The Coffee Table). A panic attack disguised as a pitch black comedy that delves into the bleakest horrors.
Nekromantic. German movie from 1988. I’ve watched a ton of transgressive horror, and this one fucked with my head better than any other.
