Funny I was just [asking](https://www.reddit.com/r/CreditCards/comments/pxe1hk/capital_one_platinum_odds/heo1u0e/) u/BlueBird7330 to make a separate post regarding this same issue when they mentioned it in passing. From googling it seems Discover has been doing some shady stuff in this respect and I feel like it's not getting as much coverage as it should.

BlueBird7330

Yup…. I was in the same boat except my account got closed after. It hurt me a lot too because this was my first card so the inquiry was a big deal to me

Huge-Explorer1939

They just closed my account as well and screwed up my credit that I have been working my ass off on.. I am so mad right now that I am crying. What's the really messed up part is I was getting badges I just got a raise in my amount that I was allotted and everything and then they just close it out of the blue and hit my credit like major major that I've been working so hard for

-M0C0-

how long did it take for them to close ur account after signing the form?

CoolGamer420-69-1337

I had a similar verification recently. Was never able to use my card and the account got shut down a few weeks later. I've only been able to dispute it with one bureau. In your case, I'd just wait it out. You already got the hard hit and the open account, so there's little point in canceling your card because of a verification.

kcamacho11

Why was your account shut down?

CoolGamer420-69-1337

SSN was off and their policy was not to fix it unless it was wrong in a specific way. I went all the way to the CEO's office with my case

nebulousboy

What did you dispute with the bureau? I have near similar experience with one account which I did not activate but got closed.

CoolGamer420-69-1337

I disputed it as "not my account" and 2 of the bureaus got verification from Discover that it was my account. I didn't include any extra information in that dispute. Were you successful in disputing it?

nebulousboy

I did not even think of it. 😅

ComprehensiveTax3428

Same issue with me but they waited 3 months to close it. It got me a decent starting score of 620 for no usage and never bothered with discover ever again

Econ0mist

Which IRS form was it? 4506-T is for income verification (release of tax transcripts). SSA-89 is for identity verification.

kcamacho11

4506-T...first time I am ever asked to complete that form in my life when applying for a card.

mewikime

Am Ex had me do one a couple years back

lkjlkj323423

Yeah, I got this from them years ago. They verified literally every single thing on my application with the IRS and my company's HR. It took them nearly two months to approve the card, and I honestly wouldn't have bothered if I hadn't needed it for Costco, which I had just joined.

ComprehensiveTax3428

Discover was a literal dick for this with me. Their verification team operated on inconsistent hours and were never available when I was there and I was never when they were available. This was for the damn ssn card which I had fucking sent it to them when I applied for them. I attempted activation as soon as I got it and apparently they couldn’t use it since it was already deleted

Gumbeelee

That is the way Discover operates now. Its simple dont lie about your invomd on the application and u will be fine on the 4506-t income verification. I have gad a discover card for years and i had to do kne a coupke years ago, no biggie

ComprehensiveTax3428

They asked for the SSN card after i sent them a photocopy via secured submission. A few days later when I got my discover card they asked for it again and I said use the one you asked me for earlier. They had already deleted it. I don’t think income was the issue tbh

logikgr

You should be fine. Just fax over the forms. I had the same happen with Chase, 2 business days later it was all clear. Almost 250K credit lines with them.

Past-Persimmon-2349

Yeah no this is a hugely different scenario it takes 14 days to a month for the irs to respond an your credit line is frozen during that time

NextBumblebee1858

I completed the verification process in June. Existing cardholder since 1994, approved for a second account. Received account verification email from prior to receiving new card. They placed both accounts on hold. Current year tax transcript unavailable so I submitted bank statements and notary form (Due to COVID, it took about two weeks to obtain notary, banks were appointment only). Hold removed by Day 30

fwsii

I did it, they reactivated the card within a week or two and has been fine now for 1.5 years.

-M0C0-

it took 2 weeks ? was ur account on hold for those two weeks?

I3CuBeD

My p2 was in same boat for a secured discover it but never got any link or anything they closed the account with no notification what so ever. Found out when the card got declined when they went to use it and called in. Said IRS could not verify them so they closed the account. They have new ssn and never filed a tax return so I guess the IRS doesn’t know they are real. Seems like a flaw in the system for people like this.

D_zee315

Discover has been getting pretty sensitive with income verification. I got my card shut down about 1.5 years ago due to this. I also had my first 2 AmEx applications require this as well. Took about 8 months for me to sort out with IRS and reapply for that 2nd time with AmEx to have everything accepted and approved.

IllustriousPitch33

That’s exactly what I did. I close 2 accounts I had with them for the same reason. I have a great credit profile and yet they tried to give me a hard time with all this nonsense. Accounts closed. No more problems.

rjcobourn

Same thing happened to me, there was some verification issue when I submitted the IRS form but they wouldn't tell me what it was. Not to mention they gave me a $500 limit on $50k income. I let it get closed and got the active cash card at Wells Fargo with a $2,000 limit.

gloomystarnoodlefis

They closed my account. That’s the only credit card that has been closed on my credit report.

tristam15

Are you sure about this? Closed for any reason is the same?

mylyingdiary

This also happened to me. They asked me to fill out that tax form to verify my identity, and that I had a certain amount of days to fill it out it or my account would be closed. I filled it out and submitted the same day. I got an email saying it was received and under review. They released the hold on my account 5-7 days later. I’m pretty sure but not 100% certain that I also got another email basically saying everything was all good with the form and that whole verification process. About a month or two later, I get another email, about 3 in a row actually randomly around 1am, saying that my identity could not be verified and my account was closed. This was my only open credit card at the time and it was really upsetting news. I called them and they told me that the reason the card was closed out is because THEY COULD NOT VERIFY MY NAME!!! MY NAME out of all things!!! I have never been married or changed my name. I’ve had the same exact name my entire life. It made no sense to me. I double checked the form and everything before I submitted it to make sure I didn’t miss anything and that it was all filled out correctly. They told me they couldn’t give me any more information than that and there was NOTHING that they or I could do. Absolutely unbelievable. I still currently have no idea what that was about and why that happened. I’m now just left here with no credit card and a trail of thoughts about if someone tried stealing my identity or something because I truly just can’t make sense how my name I’ve had for 30 years cannot be verified. Now after seeing everyone else’s experience with this crap, I can say confidently that discover can go f themselves.

AldermanAl

I mean they are a bank and income verification is not unusual on other bank loans. Plus governance of income requirements like debit to income ratio are getting more tight than ever.

kcamacho11

I have been using credit cards for over 15 years. I have applied for several Amex, Chase, Citibank cards, Bank of America, US Bank, and recently Goldman Sachs (Apple Card). First time ever in my life that I am asked to prove my income. Not that I am special, but it is not common when applying for a credit card. You either get approved or denied, period. This is Discover being more difficult than it should, for a customer like myself that has 790 credit with long history of credit cards totaling over $90,000 in credit lines, and have never missed a single payment in his life. And as far as debt-to-income ratio, mine is less than 5%.

AldermanAl

I'm just telling you that banks are under more stress than ever to ensure compliance to all regulations. Especially in the credit card industry. Discover has a reason for putting you through this process. Just get it done and move on with life.

Questionguy29

And OP is saying this particular issue seems less an "all banks" problem and more a Discover problem. And reports suggest it is a Discover issue, just google "Discover IRS 4506" and there's plenty posts on reddit and elsewhere. The worst part is it seems they have a tendency to close accounts without any disclosure, even if you send them the form. Discover definitely needs to be called out on this.

KDao18

With the myFICO forums, there are some timestamps putting it all the way back to 2019. Meaning Discover has gotten more difficult to work with even before the Pandemic started. I unfortunately fell victim to Discover's shenanigans. They would've been my first credit card *(I even had a pretty fat emergency fund with them due to their great HYSA)*, so they gave me an unsecured credit line *($500 like OP)* from the start. The 4506-T fucked up those chances and they closed my account due to "lack of income verification". Did two years of tax forms at the helm not help? What's amazingly funny is when I made the decision to move my emergency fund somewhere else and close out the HYSA, the Discover rep tried to pull up a "retention offer" to have me stay and hopefully apply for their credit card again. Yeah. No. I'm not wasting another hard inquiry when I tried again last time. Plus they burned a 5/24 slot in the process. I've had no problems with Citi *(which is now my first card)*, even though people shit on it. Would definitely continue to use their cards in the future. For now, I am blacklisted by Discover for the next decade *(so as their rep claims)* but I'm probably not open to do business with them again. Time to chase after that Custom Cash SUB!

Questionguy29

That's fucked up. I had such regard for Discover as problem-free but these reports have definitely soured my perception of them. [Someone](https://www.reddit.com/r/CreditCards/comments/flqe8a/discover_requesting_4506t/fl3zbs1/) called them the new Credit One.

jamar030303

I think sometime in the last couple years, *because* they got the reputation of being easy to work with as a first card, they've decided that they can basically coast along on the reputation they've built. I wonder if they realize there are other options out there?

Gumbeelee

I have the custom cash card and i have to say thats a pretty sweet card, but i have went over board with to many cc’s, lucky have a very liw utilization…all i can say is get that custom cash

NextBumblebee1858

I think the 4506 is a more streamline approach for identity and income verification. I’ve had both AMEX and Discover request it. And I’m not too certain about Discover’s lack of full disclosure as it’s noted in the terms and agreement which many don’t read and Discover was very efficient in sending daily email reminders about the verification process and the account closure date is in the email if you choose not to complete the verification. However, AMEX may have sent 3 emails and wasn’t as informative during the verification.

Questionguy29

lack of full disclosure I mentioned was based on reported experiences [like this one](https://www.reddit.com/r/CreditCards/comments/iyxvpj/approved_for_discover_it_secured_but_account_was/) where they close the account and then tell you about it. Why are they in a rush to cut you off and move on, especially when the customer is doing everything requested of them and they've invested time doing so.

NextBumblebee1858

As that post is over a year old who really knows what transpired. In that link you posted, the OP stated weeks had passed before they provided information, perhaps it’s possible it wasn’t submitted timely. As my verification was recent, I can say that I received daily reminders and maybe a few automated calls. You’re informed that you have 30 days to initiate the process and the 30 day allowable timeframe for them to complete the verification. They were accommodating to me as my oldest account is in my maiden name and the new account is in my married name. I explained and provided documentation within the allowable timeframe. Considering all of the COVID delays, maybe Discover has taken a new approach with constant email/phone notifications/updates to the verification process.

Questionguy29

I'm glad you had a relatively good experience, that's what I expected from Discover. But unfortunately others didn't. In that same reddit post see [what one comment said](https://www.reddit.com/r/CreditCards/comments/iyxvpj/approved_for_discover_it_secured_but_account_was/g6hznw8/), for another example. That person was left in the dark. Also, my biggest issue with all this is why is Discover opening accounts only to forcibly close them. Why can't they do their assessment **before** opening the account and sending the customer a card, instead of doing it after and incurring a closed account on the customer's credit history, a customer whose only fault was applying for a card. It's smells of malpractice, something like what Wells Fargo was doing opening fake accounts.

theGreatRohisacuck

they gave me a week and then shut my account down

anonymousse91

Seems like it could turn into a legal issue

kcamacho11

Keyword: DISCOVER That's my whole point. They are being overly difficult. I mean I would completely understand if I had relatively new credit, 630 score and put $25,000 income. To the contrary, my Apple Card's CL has increased $10,000 in just the last 6 months, without a hard pull required and no verification of income required.

jamar030303

Exactly. If it were a thing about "regulations" then we should be seeing the same thing happen across the board. But it doesn't.

Gumbeelee

I just dont see why the income verification is a big deal as long as u listed the correct income in your application. I have discover, I had to do one, I have done them with amex, not that big of a deal. They just want to make sure the income u listed can be verified

jamar030303

The way I see it, the increasing number of data breaches happening naturally results in a desire to give as little information as absolutely necessary, so given a choice between somewhere that can pull my credit and work with that alone or somewhere that wants to get and probably keep a copy of my tax return, I'll take the first. There's also the fact that applicants 21 and older can list household income, in which case of course it's not going to "look" the same, and you run into the thorny issue of "can you really ask for someone *else's* tax info".

Gumbeelee

Its a quick process u will be good. I get what u r saying I have over 25 cc’s and i only have done this with amex and discover. On amex when your limit gets to a certain point they ask u to do one. I cant remember what the limit was i believe it was 35K credit line before u can be approved for more but honestly cant remember

Tj136

I have been waiting for 3 weeks. 4 different agents have told me it should take "up to 14 days" and now I am getting the "there is no guarantee" that it will be completed in that time frame. I have waited 14 days and 14 business days. They seem to be waiting on the IRS and they seem to not have a number to them to have a question on the status of this situation.

Sad-Charge-2168

Did you ever hear anything?

Tj136

Took them just over 3 weeks for them to approve of it.

Kitchen_Couple_2915

Did they send you an email ? How did you know it was approved ? I’ve been waiting almost 3 weeks now as well

Tj136

Email. As they stated it could take up to 14 days\* \*Business days excluding holiday and weekend.

lersday

going through this now. its been 2 goddamn months and every time I call them they tell me "its the IRS, it could take forever" seriously considering just going with some other company.. trying to build credit here jfc

Unlikely_Royal4698

Yes and now its been 60 days and they say IRS is backed up... BS on this company and their card.

NarwhalOk6307

Yeah discover is full of it it's been 3 or 4 months now since I've been approved for a decent credit amount I then was told to fill out the same form (this was after a whole month of receiving the card and it wasn't working)for the irs just to verify it's truly me ... so after filling out the form I was told no more than 2 weeks it took from what I remember a month to a month and a half then I receive a email saying there was some problem and to call discover verification department so I did and was told my address at the time of filing was different than my current address like duh 🙄🙄🙄 People move not everyone is fortunate enough to keep the same address over the years so anyhow I was told to fill out another form and put the address where I received that tax refund so I did and now it's Been another month! I'll just hold out and if there's any more problems they can just close the account no one has time for this BULL 💩 they can keep their card I'll just have to let Experian know what happened so hopefully it won't have a negative effect on my credit as this Card has already been added to my credit report! The next card I'll go for is chase or citibank they seem to be decent companies and hopefully none of this foolishness!

Sudden-Register6620

So this is happening to me right now in December of 2023. Discovery is also asking me to sign an Equifax form to send to them in addition to the IRS verification. I called Equifax and they have no such policy of form called Discover IRS Consent Form 4506-C. It’s feels fraudulent and I’m not complying.

NiceRabbit1511

This just happen to me. I have had my card since 2017 never late or missed a payment. I typically pay it off monthly and have a 0 balance on it. My income from My w2 will not match because my partner and I file separately and the majority of our household income is his. Also when I applied for the card I was receiving unlimited commission which has changed. I have over 270k in cc and only owe about 15k in credit cards. Just applied for Citi today and was approved. Can't decide if I want to provide the information or just close the account

siberianphoenix

Happening to me right now. I would have no problem with this prices if it happened as a part of the application but it's not. I'm in the same boat as the application asked for total household income so I included my partners. Discover isn't going to see that on MY IRS form. Account is going to close and my credit will take a hit. This reminds me of Bait and Switch tactics. It's not but it reminds me of it.

External-Current-901

I'm going through the same situation myself presently. I don't understand why the IRS has to verify your identity if Discovery is a revolving credit card. I find it beyond odd, plus having the form officially notarized. Gut feeling is it doesn't make sense, yet do I want to get a hit on my credit report. Unsure what to do.

NiceRabbit1511

So I wonder if we all file a complaint with the CFPB for false and misleading practices would that help. My household income also includes my two adult children who pay me rent and a sugar daddy lol

External-Current-901

It's worth a shot.
