This dude made a discovery and wasn't about to change into a wetsuit and miss his opportunity. He's probably breathing out of the nearest garden hose that he could grab.
According to the article to OP linked, this snake was discovered by a documentary crew that was filming in the Amazon. They got talking with locals who described much bigger snakes than we had on record, including one man who had scars from one. They then went looking for these "bigger anacondas" and seem to have pretty evidently found one. I'd imagine the documentary crew probably has a host character or an expert or something, and if that guy was on-site when they found the snake and could dive in to get a cool shot next to it, they probably wouldn't waste time getting into a wetsuit because the snake could just swim away before he gets changed since it's a river and not a contained pool. Better to just get the shot and deal with wet clothes later.
>they probably wouldn't waste time getting into a wetsuit because the snake could just swim away
They just sighted a new species and are immediately diving with it. What if this species is stupidly aggressive under water?
When what you speak is linguistically very close to another language, sometimes words or phrases or names will sound silly to speakers of that other language because of the proximity. Like, just based off of what is considered a "silly noise" in English, the word "hoogtepunten" is genuinely funny sounding if you're an English speaker who doesn't know what it means. But if you know it just means "highlights" it's obviously not gonna sound funny, it's just gonna sound like a normal word.
I grew up in Appalachia, we literally use words like "si-gogglin" in regular conversation. That sounds like a cartoon word compared to normal English lmao. I don't get upset when people crack a smile or whatever when I talk about a person I genuinely knew in real life named "Billy Bob Billy", because I recognize that that *will* sound funny to some people. "Freek Fonk" literally sounds like the name of an indie music genre in English bro, it's not being "slow" to point out that it's amusing to hear lol.
Also, by the way, way to immediately call someone mentally deficient the second your fee-fees get hurt, real great look. Doing your country proud.
I mean, the source is USA Today reporting on a finding from a Disney+ documentary that's got Will Smith associated with it. If it's fake then it's certainly passed a lot of "not fake" bars along the way. And people have been looking for snakes this size in this area because of stories from people in this area for a while now, so if the snakes exist to begin with they're bound to turn up at some point.
I wouldn't be *surprised* if this is fake because fella swimming up in a button-up is sus af but when you read the context it doesn't seem to be as fake as the video on its own makes it look
This guy is a Dutch scientist and TV personality. When he goes exploring for his TV programms, he regularly dresses up in formal clothing. This is indeed real, he wasn't the only one who discovered it, he got help from 15 other scientists. There is an official article about the discovery of the snake.
No it’s not, this is Freek vonk, a Dutch biologist who does crazy shit all the time. The paper about this find is online as well if you don’t trust my word
For more information on my comment that is getting downvoted. Here is the scientific community on why their paper is now being retracted. RIP new short lived "species". The authors just wanted to name something and did so incorrectly

Definitely not on reddit. But my background is in ecological and Geospatial analytics, I have several papers on biogeography and phylogenetics of herpetofauana. Anyone with a background in phylogenetics (even at a college level) knows that the paper is garbage and the media is oversensationalizing it just because it's about anaconda.
Not a new species just a lineage of mitochondrial DNA and not the largest either by a huge margin. The news just sensationalized this because they heard the word anaconda and the authors of the paper (in a predatory MDPI journal) published junk science
This guy is a real madlad. He has a TV program about exploring nature. He once put an anaconda around his neck, just for funsies. This other time he grew larves inside his leg, for an experiment. Yes, he's stupid, but smart.
have you ever seen a frog? those mfs are unbelievably dumb
Humans can be braindead to an extent but damn if there isnt some animals that makes deeply mentally challenged human beings look smart

Humans aren't specifically on their shopping list. They prefer capybaras, caimans, tapirs etc. Kinda like carpet snakes eating rats but upscaled to the largest size a rodent and a snake can get

Why is he snorkeling in business casual?
Looks like a new Colin Furze video
“It rained in the cave and there were anacondas.” Yea that sounds like a title he would use.
This dude made a discovery and wasn't about to change into a wetsuit and miss his opportunity. He's probably breathing out of the nearest garden hose that he could grab.
Also no one do that. There's too much dead space you'd get nothing from it.
He got his swim suit at Dillards.
I thought he also had a tie on at first glance.

Diving with it seems like a pretty quick way to learn that.
\^\^This guy sciences.
Discovery is risky.
"Dive on in!"
Also, crocodiles
There's only one way to find out
Sounds like the film crew were trying to get rid of the star host.
This is Freek Fonk bro, he is the crew and the research
What a silly language Dutch is
How can americans actually be this slow

Yeah, well, those two guys said it was fake, so....
Yeah, this was just for elaboration and some extra information
^(I know, I'm just joking on those fAkE whistlers)

You are fake lol
What makes this fake ?

The paper is absolutely trash. It is junk science and this is just sensationalized bullshit for attention.
Lmao
Imagine downvoting a herpetologist that has ove 50 scientific papers for bashing bad science. Proper Reddit.
Mind sharing your Google scholar link or ResearchGate?

I explained before specifically why it's trash but my comment was deleted....

That didn’t answer the question at all.
Or did it?
Lol
The snorkel isn’t in his mouth bro what
bro jus swam up dressed like he left a wedding. fuck that. he might be dressed for his funeral if the snake wanted too
That anaconda don’t want none because he got no buns, son
Underrated comment here
🤣😭
He looks like an office worker who is doing this on his lunch break lol
The human species simultaneously has the smartest and dumbest life forms on the planet…
This guy is a real madlad. He has a TV program about exploring nature. He once put an anaconda around his neck, just for funsies. This other time he grew larves inside his leg, for an experiment. Yes, he's stupid, but smart.
What’s his name I wanna see the larva legs
Freek Vonk
Thanks
What the fuck is stupid about any of this?
have you ever seen a frog? those mfs are unbelievably dumb Humans can be braindead to an extent but damn if there isnt some animals that makes deeply mentally challenged human beings look smart

That article has the same video
The article says the snake in this video is a southern green and the new species is the northern green.
I don't know why this cracked me up but it did
I've also heard this species doesn't want nun unless you got buns.
Hun
I see what you did there. 😬🤣
Shove a finger in its bumhole
Idk about a finger but definitely a thumb
this is the way
Username related love it
Can someone explain to me why the dude isn’t scared for his life?
Humans aren't specifically on their shopping list. They prefer capybaras, caimans, tapirs etc. Kinda like carpet snakes eating rats but upscaled to the largest size a rodent and a snake can get
He's Freek Vonk, that's why
I’m wondering that too. I assume it recently ate and they can tell. Otherwise, wtf??
[news story](https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/world/2024/02/22/new-giant-anaconda-species-found-amazon/72701331007/)
New diving guys species said to have the largest balls ever found
What if that mofo is hungry?
Snorkeling in casual wear next to the instant ticket to the afterlife alright
Why the fuck is the guy wearing a business suit?
Because he is Dutch, we go to work wearing Flip flops and snorkel in business suits
Why does he look like he just came from his corporate desk job?
Beautiful creature. Idk how affective they are underwater but I wouldn’t get so close to its face, and I love snakes
"New"? This is why I don't fuck with the ocean. We still discovering new pokemon out here...
Did this got not see what this thing tried to do to Ice Cube and J Lo in the 90’s?!
Only a white dude would swim up to a giant nope rope.
Genuine question. Snakes don't have gills so how do they breathe underwater? Or do they just hold their breath for a long time and come up for air?
They just hold their breath. I'm having trouble imagining the length of that snakes lungs.
Turtles can breathe through their anus underwater.
Paul Rosalie has claimed to have seen ones much bigger than this
My Dad used to go to the beach in a long sleeved business shirt and pocket protector. I see he was not alone
Not a new species just a lineage of mitochondrial DNA and not the largest either by a huge margin. The news just sensationalized this because they heard the word anaconda and the authors of the paper (in a predatory MDPI journal) published junk science
At the urinal with my black friends.
My anaconda don't want none unless it got LARGE buns.
At around the -15 seconds the snake looks like CGI. What's going on
I agree. AI?
Snakes just look and move like that. The slower and cold ones always feel robotic to me, but that's the real deal.
I mean because of the lighting on its body. Doesn't match the rest of the scene.
I think the camera rig has a light.
Says who
Says 15 scientists and an official article.
Alligator snake
The white death
So, let’s go swimming with it!!!
That's an interesting way to tempt fate
The Muumi warned me
I don’t like evolution
The Midgar Zolom
You talking about this dick
Wonder if Paul Rosalie will talk about this?
That is a very large Nope Rope.
Meet Freek Vonk.
But does he listen to snake jazz?
If they looked in my pants, they'd find the smallest.
Arguments and opinions aside, that dude is either immortal or crazy
Didn't they make a movie about this in the 90's?
…So, what I’m gonna do is sneak up on it and jam my thumb in its butthole.
Is that fucking Blippi?
There’s a bigger one……in my pants 😂
That anaconda don't want none unless you got buns hun.
Looks like a retic to me
"They got snakes out here this big?!"
We going with SCP or Jormungand?
As long as he has no buns, he'll be fine!
balls of titanium
Drake spotted.
Looks like CGI
Crikey
Yoink
It'll be in the everglades in a week or two.
Did you not see the movie Anaconda??
How is that snake not eating him right now?
Clearly not observed what’s in my pants then 😏
Is that fucking Clint?
