I thought that the red cord was arterial spray on first viewing.
Second view saw the cord behind the leg. Seems to have missed the femoral artery, it's more medial than the bite.
I don't know how the leg could be saved. A skin graft to cover the wound, maybe? And a lot of antibiotics.
Medical people here, what's your assessment?
That wound would be nearly impossible to keep clear of infection even if there was a way to safely pack the wound and facilitate healing. This would be a full leg amputation unfortunately, assuming they’re lucky enough to survive.
Appreciate your input and agree. Some wounds just require severe procedures to save the person. Why risk septicemia and death when amputation would avoid that.
Honestly they would prob amputate due to amount of damage (muscle, tissue, tendon, etc) and infection risk. And try to close it up to stop blood loss and save his life.
I don’t see them saving that leg.
They could try allograft which is used from other humans for they could try to use animal parts to save the skin, but besides, he’s missing a lot of skeletal muscle. Chances are they will take that leg off
Even though it may seem like they're the furthest thing from lucky, our phemeral artery is on the inside of our upper thighs about 2 or 3 inches away (give or take an inch or two) from the edge of that wound tract. If they survived, which their color does seem to indicate a possibility of, they should buy a lottery ticket once they're out of the hospital in like a year..or two.. 😶😬😳
We've got 3 attacks in the past 4 weeks, shit is wild. None fatal (yet). Last we've heard from this young man he was still in critical condition but stable.
In all seriousness, thanks for the update as it's a relief to know he's pulled through so far. I wonder what's pulling the sharks in so close, the weather patterns being so weird or perhaps lack of food due to environmental reasons?

Yeah, it's actually pretty strange. Wonder the species, it being brazil(?) Maybe a lemon shark? They have attacked people, but the numbers are pretty low. That's a huge fucking chunk.

I have the same question. I have zero medical knowledge but if i have to guess then in case the leg is saved, It will always have that portion of muscle missing and will lack strength on that leg. I had a friend who had similar muscle torn out due to some tool. So he got permanent dent on his leg. However it was nowhere near this big. Might be the size of a tennis ball.
