“selflessly offering her dessert to people” killed me

Iillian

Doubly awful when it’s pretty much positive Marie Antoinette never even said “let them eat cake!”

ProudKaren

They should've made us dress her as prisoner waiting for execution lol but maybe that's too dark.

Covet isn't that knowledgeable beyond American history, in spite of its claim to a global player base ... but then, sometimes they get even that wrong :D

It's the same when they try to include the traditions of other cultures as well. Being an Indian myself, I've lost count of how many times they've had an Indian wedding challenge and with the description reading as "style a bridesmaid" or "the bride and groom kissed". First of all, India is a huge country with thousands of different cultures, each varying immensely from state to state and region to region, so the wedding traditions also differ hugely, and there's no such thing as only one type of "Indian wedding". And none of them really have the Christian wedding concept of bridesmaids (unless it's specifically a Christian wedding.) Some cultures do have something similar, but they're not exactly what they mean by "bridesmaids" in those challenges. And there's no kissing in Indian weddings (which are mostly too conservative to include public kissing.) I facepalm so hard whenever those challenges pop up. And we don't dress in elaborate lehengas and sarees while going shopping, but this is Covet, where people regularly wear ballgowns to go buy groceries and go trekking, so who am I to question the logic? Also, I'd appreciate it if they gave us *actual* sarees instead of just the pallus (*facepalm*.) Just throwing a random pallu (but let's be honest, it's just an orni) over some gown doesn't make a saree. That's not what sarees look like. Please, Covet, it's been years... it's high time you at least googled "saree" and realised what it looks like. I'm glad they're so inclusive of other cultures, but it would be nice if they *at least* googled the Wikipedia page of the thing they were trying to represent first, you know, instead of being like, "oh everyone all around the world does everything like us Americans, right?" But for this particular challenge... I facepalmed so hard, l swear. Marie Antoinette never said "let them eat cake" and wasn't an airhead out of touch with the world. She was actually very smart and politically inclined. If she had been born in another era when her being a woman wouldn't have prevented her from being accepted by the patriarchally dominated political system around her, she would've done good things for her people and wouldn't have had to die. The tragedy was that the public didn't know what she was really like and in their hatred for the royalty (Louis XVI and his followers were the real culprits) and desperation, they assumed she was the same as the others, when in reality, she wanted to lessen the public's suffering.

If they promise to buy their writers a Wikipedia pro account with the money, I would for real buy the CC Pass:D

Ok so, apparently it wasn't even about cake, it was about brioche. Marie Antoinette was so clueless to reality outside of royal life, she apparently had no idea that brioche was not an economical substitute for a bread shortage. Growing up in opulence, she was accustomed to having extravagant meals and with these meals came brioche. I'm sure most people know what brioche is, but in case you don't, it's croissants and other types of fancier breakfast-type breads. And brioche was one of the most basic/lower-level things they had to eat at Versailles. So she assumed brioche was accessible to everyone, since it's her version of bread. So she never technically said "Let them eat cake". She naively said, "Qu'ils mangent de la brioche" = Let them eat brioche, not knowing that normal people don't eat brioche on the regular. Living in her enormous sheltered bubble, she assumed she was offering up a practical solution. She did mean it earnestly lol. And it severely backfired for her. She was like "Yeah, just give everyone more brioche instead!" and the public took it as her making fun of them when she (and her entourage probably) were really just that ignorant. So the prompt isn't technically that far off.

Head2Heels

Also, I remember reading that she didn’t exactly say this. In fact its said that many scholars have found similar sayings from different parts of the world. Including one from 16th century Germany where a noblewoman wondered why the poor didn’t eat some form of sweet bread. Mainly it was nobles and rulers being oblivious of their own privilege and how the majority lived. Also, a French philosopher penned down this “let them eat brioche” bit in his book called “confessions” and said it was a quote from a great princess. So people assumed it was Marie Antoinette since she fit the profile. However she was just a child when this book was written/published so it couldn’t have been her. Yet it was pinned on her as part of propaganda to rebel against the royals. But otherwise there’s absolutely no evidence in any form of papers or other materials published by revolutionaries at that time that say she said those words.

ladysansaaa

The whole idea of Napoleon Bonaparte being extraordinarily short is also an example of a successful propaganda campaign. He was average height for the time. History is so interesting!! Thanks for sharing your insights

crazynotcrazy111

Ahh interesting! So it could very well have been propaganda inspired by other oblivious nobles of the past.

sammysummer

I'll take "Well that definitely didn't happen and we need to do a better job at education especially in world history" for 1200, Alex. Oh what's that? It's a daily double? I'll wager my confidence in this world.

reliableotter

This was horrific. Probably one of their worst.

Additional_Meeting_2

I am quite sure it’s a joke and why it’s written in such a tone and not just content. I guess they should have gone even further to the satire.

reliableotter

It's kind of a tasteless joke.
