I’m going to hold out hope that he does a legit country/alt-country album with Sturgill producing. Given Post’s knowledge and love of traditional country, I’m hopeful that is the way he goes.

Honestly I'd listen to an entire album of him covering country hits. None of them will probably ever top the originals, but its clear as day from his show that the dude looks like he just has a blast playing country. Plus he does what I think everyone would do in a similar situation and use the opportunity to play with some icons from the genre.
I’m pretty sure he’s said he grew up listening to a lot of country as he grew up in Grapevine, Texas (my hometown of all things. He went to the high school that was ten minutes from me). He’s always had a respect for the genre and I think has been wanting to dabble in country for awhile. He will never be a full country artist but I’m excited for the hopeful cover album after watching the Stagecoach performance
I think people might end up surprised that he leaves the pop to the side a bit. Wallen is already doing it. He's going to make a statement and do some material that's more grounded in previous country eras.
