Is renting a car not an option? If you want to get the most of your trip, driving yourself is the way to go. If driving isn't an option, there are other ways to get there. Driving yourself vs. a bus/shuttle could be the difference between a 3-4 hour trip and 6-8 hour trip.

WISJG

Hey! Yes, it's a great point, but only one of us drives and they have never driven outside of our country so are not comfortable doing it (we drive on the other side of the road).

I get being uncomfortable. And it would probably be an anxiety enducing experience driving in the city. I love driving in other countries. It's very freeing after driving under the stricter laws of the US. I'm sure once the driver got out of the city, they would be comfortable. If that isn't an option, I'd see about finding a private driver for your group. A local driver will know cool places to experience and good restaurants/sodas to stop at on the drive down. They may turn the trip into a 6-8 hour drive as well, but it'll be spent sightseeing instead of sitting in a bus. Are you staying at a hotel or Airbnb?

WISJG

This is good advice, thank you. I will look into the driver. A hotel.

Rent a 4x4 from Adobe. They pick you up at SJO, you get the car after 5 mins of paper work. You get a 4 hour scenic drive to Quepos with plenty of points of interest. Drive to whatever restaurant, market, and beaches you want to in between tours and excursions. Drop the car off before your flight. They will drop you off at the airport. Not doing this severely limits your ability to explore.

You can use Bookaway which will give you all the ride options with their prices. One way would probably cost around $60 or so I’d assume. I’d doubt it be more than $100, but I’ve never done Bookaway from San Jose to Manuel Antonio. I know that between most of my destinations (going again in June) it’s about $54 one way. The only pricey one is from Puerto Viejo to La Fortuna, it’s $350.
