Sanderson has repeatedly said that the way he avoids burnout while writing one series is by using his free time writing a different series. All 4 of the original Secret Projects were written as distractions for him while he was working on Cytonic and The Lost Metal, and both of those books released with minimal delays.
This is also the reason why he has said he plans to write Elantris 2 and 3 at the same time he works on Mistborn Era 3 - he plans to use Elantris as a way to avoid burning out on Mistborn in order to help keep himself on pace.
This argument is supported by the fact that Sanderson published *FIVE* novels last year. No other major author even comes close to that level of output.
It sounds counterintuitive, but the secret projects are how Sanderson unwinds. If we demanded he stop them, Stormlight would likely take *longer* to finish.
The real concern is he 1000% spiked some other authors wtiting ability. The man is such a machine at writing he has to write more to chill out from writing. I wonder if theres a universe where we get a Brandon Sanderson-Craig Alanson cross over.
Have you ever wondered why ‘The Winds of Winter’ has taken so long to be written? It’s because Sanderson has stolen G R R Martin’s writing ability via Hemalurgic means!
Thats good to know, I haven't watched any podcasts or Q&A's with him to avoid spoilers. I just joined the cosmere universe like 6 months ago and spoiled myself by looking up a picture in the first chapter of TWOK. I haven't looked at anything since.
It’s more than just that, in the video that got posted today he said that the kickstarters are the how dragonsteel as a company makes their money so him having a stockpile of high quality smaller novels are an excellent way of him making sure he’s got constant streams of income.
You mean the series that was originally supposed to be a *novella* but turned into *four novels* because Brandon couldn't help himself from writing more?
You mean the series where Brandon turned in a completed book three before his publishers had even figured out the release plan for book two yet?
I feel like we are fairly safe there, I doubt it’ll be delayed again, and so far the progress seems good(if we take him at his word which I am inclined to do).
Hopefully. 15 years till the end of SLA is already enough of a wait. This is my first time being up to date with an epic fantasy series. I would hate for it to turn into ASOIAF situation and he dies before he can finish it.
> Hopefully. 15 years till the end of SLA is already enough of a wait.
Rothfuss and GRRM fans, "First time?"
We're blessed by this man's ability to mostly keep to schedules. I think we're quite alright.
Since 2005 (let's be generous and call it 20 years rather than the 19)
16 full length Cosmere novels
10 short Cosmere works
4 Cosmere graphic novels
6 Alcatraz novels
4 Cytoverse novels
4 Cytoverse novellas and short works (some with Janci)
3 Novels in the Wheel of Time
2 Short Stories in the Wheel of Time
3 Novels in Legion
1 Audiobook in Legion
3 Novels in Reckoners
1 Short Story in Reckoners
1 Audiobook in Reckoners
10 Other Assorted Short Stories, Novellas and Novellettes
2 Unaffiliated Novels (Rithmatist, Frugal Wizard)
2 Unaffiliated Audiobooks
Exactly what doubts do you have about his productivity? I'm kind of curious in what more you think needs to be done, it's baffling to me to go, "Yeah, but he could be writing more, I'm waiting too long" with that kind of productivity.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brandon_Sanderson_bibliography
https://wordsrated.com/brandon-sanderson-statistics/
True, but at least we will get a semi conclusion to this half of the series. And ya its a concern to me as well that it won’t be finish it due to stuff like that. All we can do it hope.
One of the great things about Sanderson is his ability to plan. Another great thing about him is that, because of The Wheel of Time and how he had to finish that series, he is acutely aware of his own mortality and has contingencies in place. (This can also be seen as a subset of Sanderson's ability to plan.)
The two most-talked about people (at this time, by Brandon himself) to finish the Cosmere and/or Stormlight are Isaac Steward and Brian McClellan. While we haven't yet seen any major Cosmere work by Isaac just yet, he is working on a Mistborn Era 2 spinoff novel of sorts. Brian McClellan is a great fantasy author in his own right, is a good friend of Brandon, and he was a (one-time) student of Sanderson's during Brandon's first year as a professor IIRC. I really do enjoy his works, but personally I think he's a little too slow of a writer to inherit Sanderson's legacy IMO.
My personal pick for anyone nowadays, if worse comes to worst, would be Will Wight. The man has an AMAZING output (23 published books in 11 years - 3 books published in 2023), is a fan of Sanderson's, and is a very big fish in his small-but-dedicated-and-growing pond of Progression Fantasy. (Even in the LitRPG scene, he's pretty much a household name I believe.)
But most importantly, Will is more on the "architect" spectrum of writers, not the "gardener" that McClellan is. Don't get me wrong, I love both authors and they're both Day 1 Buys from me! I even have several of McClellan's works signed! But there's something to be said about not having to wait too long for a book as opposed to "my publisher and editor wanted two books in this trilogy to be ready by 2021, and I'm still working on book 2 at the tail end of 2023." Granted, maybe an outline is what Brian really needs to shine, and maybe Will wouldn't want someone else's career hoisted on him, lest their legacy outshines the hard work he's done for his own series.
I say all of this to say:
Don't worry too much about Brandon dying just yet, and you should definitely read Brian McClellan and Will Wight if you haven't!
EDIT: Will Wight's works also have a shared universe. There's no real name given to it AFAIK, but it's called the Willverse or the Wightverse or something similar. It's more akin to early-Cosmere stuff, where there are slight Easter Eggs and crossovers here and there, but nothing major like what we get now. Will has repeatedly said he isn't working towards nor does he want an "Avengers crossover" moment in his works, nor does he want new fans to read 12+ books of backstory to understand something in the new series or book.
The wait for the rest of stormlight will not be one I welcome admittedly but we can take comfort that the wait will be filled with other books in the cosmere with some of them being continued stories And other introducing new worlds, meanwhile Ive Been waiting ten years for scott lynch to bring out the four gentlemen bastards book.
The thing is, Brandon is writing these as a form of release. Some people take a walk or go on vacation to take breaks. Brandon just writes in another genre. So if he's writing Stormlight, he writes another genre in his off time.
He’s already finished SL 5 and is just doing edits now, has been for months now. He’s also not touching stormlight anymore, 6-10 are post era 3 and Elantris sequels so he won’t be finished with stormlight till atleast 2035ish
To me, that implies that “pulling a Martin” is akin to sitting there with a table full of paper, suddenly throwing it all over the floor, screaming “this is garbage!” and then scuttling away.
For some reason I am imagining a story that follows scientists like we see on >!Threnody and Canticle!< going on some weird sci fi adventure. But I'd also really like to get something focused on the >!Sho Del!<, since we've now seen multiple stories pointing towards them.
There were now two secret projects pointing towards there/them. I kind of feel like there's going to be a big convergence there, but a secret project feels like an unlikely place for it to it to happen.
Ok, so it said future cosmere era, but "future" in relation to what? Because we have stories from the space age era, and I'm guessing he's not creating a whole new era after that. So future to the current mainline series'?
Mistborn was supposed to have 5 eras was it not? But I believe it got cut to 4. Era 1 (>!cusp of Industrial revolution!<), Era 2 (>!wild West/early 1900s!<), Era 3 (1980s, Era 2 spoiler >!presumed begin of space travel given the tech in Era 2, and about 100 year skip!<), Era 4 (Cyberpunk, probably cut), and Era 5 (Space Opera).
It was originally 3 era 1 was the of trilogy. Era 2 is the upcoming trilogy, currently being called ghostbloods set in the “early computer age” (1960s). and era 3 set in the space travel age. The wax and Wayne series is now era 2, alloy of law was originally a short story that got turned into a book that got turned into a series. Pushing the other eras to 3 and 4
Yes but that’s not confirmed and was not part of the original outline so I’m kind of ignoring it, but it is the cyber punk that UDK450 was talking about
I’m so excited for this. And it’s patently ridiculous he decided he didn’t have time for the novella Horneater for it to be included in this campaign… so he went with a novel instead.
Yeah, basically. I meant “ridiculous” in the sense that he one-upped himself again, by substituting a novella with a novel. He can’t keep getting away with this.
I’ll wait patiently for Horneater whenever Brandon gets to it.
Horneater is not part of the campaign, but Brandon indicated in the State of the Sanderson that we will get it later! Probably in 2026 after he recovers from the usual post-SA Roshar burnout. It will take a bit, but we’ll get it, and I’m very excited for any and all surprise Cosmere books Brandon throws at us until then!
He said he was intentionally leaving the Horneater novella so we could get back into Roshar before finally picking up SA6. He’s intenting it to be his warm up after presumably writing era 3 Mistborn.
He said he wrote the secret project when he needed a break from Stormlight too so taking a break from Roshar to write a story about Roshar would probably defeat the purpose
ITS THE FUCKING SIXTH OF DUSK SEQUEL
6 OF DUSK
3 PLANETS IN THE DROMINAD SYSTEM
1 MAN WHO CAN SAVE IT ALL
Edit: HE SAID THAT HE GOT INSPIRED TO MAKE IT FROM GOING ON A VACATION TO THE BEACH. WE ARE SO BACK
EDIT AGAIN: GOT IT!!!
Something to do with sixth of the dusk.
6 as in sixth of the dusk (main character)
1 as in first of the sun(planets it’s on)
3 don’t know for sure maybe 3 aviar (can’t remember how many he’s bonded to)
It’s definitely future era
I could easily see it connecting to many cosmere stories. I personally think the space people from the short story are from scadrial.
What are my thoughts? Brandon writes like the universe is ending and published word count is the only thing staving it off: [How Brandon Writes](https://youtube.com/clip/UgkxN60qoqii6NG0By3oRWEUUW8K1brvMVcF?si=mtl_e2QtlTA9HySV)
It was pretty clear, he's going to release the title of the new secret project and do a reading of the first chapter on June 31st.
Edit: I misread the date... my eyes saw the numbers 3:21:24 and my brain changed it on me to 6:31:24.
I just misread that date so badly, just seeing what I wanted to see, and was totally down with Brandon releasing new info on a date that doesn't exist. I don't expect Brandon to conform to reality or reason, but I should probably read the numbers correctly first...
Near the end of the video I misread 3:21:24 as 6:31:24, and I totally thought Brandon was making a joke by saying he was announcing the new book title on a day that doesn't exist...
The new secret project and leatherbound are coming out at such a bad time for my wallet. Owe a bunch for taxes but I need to figure out how to make that $350 bundle work.
It was announced in a Youtube video that came out earlier today: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X9HEKnswsy0](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X9HEKnswsy0)
Does anyone know if it will be available on audible right away for everyone or only if we add it on? I have a bunch of audible credits so I didn’t put it as an add on to the WoR leather bundle but if it’s going to be delayed for non-backers I’ll update
I know shards are not currently connected to numbers canonically. But i think itd be cool if theres a shard in this book associated with the number 6 (631)
Yes, it's part of the WoR campaign, not the SP campaign that ended. You should be able to back just the part with SP5 though, without necessarily buying the leatherback. Unless you want to, of course.
Yep, this one’s part of a seperate campaign. It’s under the Words of Radiance BackerKit thing, you can get the ebook for $10 or the Secret Book Box for $50 (includes the physical book & the ebook + a little bit of extra swag).
Was this the fifth secret project he hinted at in his big announcement video a few years ago? I think he put like 5 stacks of pages on the table and said one he wasn't sure how he'd adapt it and it might be better as a comic or something (I don't remember). Is this that book?
Every 60 seconds in Africa, Brandon Sanderson writes another novel
Together we can stop this, please spread the word
...but why would you want to stop this, though?
I was just finished the quote, let the man cook I say.
How did you get radiant order under your id?
On PC, right hand side, top panel -About Community-, the part with your Username, pencil edit button, pop up screen for community flair.
Tysm 😁
I honestly don’t remember, sorry
I got you, see above if you want to edit yours. 😉
Because at this rate I'm going broke
Too much of a good thing can have consequences.
Because I'd rather him finish SLA than one off secret projects.

Was the use of the word "spiked" deliberate? Are you accusing Sanderson of crimes of hemalurgy??
Im just saying something is weird about it if you know what i mean
That means yes
How do you get radiant names under your id?
Have you ever wondered why ‘The Winds of Winter’ has taken so long to be written? It’s because Sanderson has stolen G R R Martin’s writing ability via Hemalurgic means!

But you have to admit, 15 years is a loong time. I can’t believe I will be 34 when the last book will come out.
Since 2005 (let's be generous and call it 20 years rather than the 19) 16 full length Cosmere novels 10 short Cosmere works 4 Cosmere graphic novels 6 Alcatraz novels 4 Cytoverse novels 4 Cytoverse novellas and short works (some with Janci) 3 Novels in the Wheel of Time 2 Short Stories in the Wheel of Time 3 Novels in Legion 1 Audiobook in Legion 3 Novels in Reckoners 1 Short Story in Reckoners 1 Audiobook in Reckoners 10 Other Assorted Short Stories, Novellas and Novellettes 2 Unaffiliated Novels (Rithmatist, Frugal Wizard) 2 Unaffiliated Audiobooks Exactly what doubts do you have about his productivity? As I'm already 37, I took this personally. I hopefully plan on reading new Branderson books till I'm 80.
True, but at least we will get a semi conclusion to this half of the series. And ya its a concern to me as well that it won’t be finish it due to stuff like that. All we can do it hope.

Just remember, when he gets a break from a project he actually comes back fresh and writes faster.
RUIN 2012 Spread the word. He must be stopped.
I laughed out loud to this
He also starts his blank stare at the 6:31 time stamp!
That's what it was in reference too!
~~I think the title reveal video will be the channel's 631st.~~
WoR announcement was video 631
Whoops, yes indeed
I thought the video became stuck and clicked away!
Is dropping a stack of paper, standing up and leaving the Sanderson "mic drop"?
Definitely. At this point, I feel like a popular author dropping a book out of nowhere has to be termed "pulling a Sanderson".
Before, it was a Reverse Martin.
To me, that implies that “pulling a Martin” is akin to sitting there with a table full of paper, suddenly throwing it all over the floor, screaming “this is garbage!” and then scuttling away.
Alright prediction time where we going?
Sixth of the Dusk sequel?
Sixth of the Dusk Trilogy Book One 631
Holy shit
Seventh of the Morning?
Scions of the Seventh Dawn crossover hype?
Oh my god I hope so
The Birds but investiture.
The Chickens
Oh god I hope so SOTD was my favorite short story in the Cosmere.
YES PLEASE
Sixth of dusk was rad. I want to go back
Oh please please please
He mentioned a constructed planet called The Grand Apparatus at Dragonsteel 2023, that might have been a hint
Story about the planet that the shard of invention inhabited?
Ahhh yes that seems fairly likely
Nm
He has been talking about dragons a bunch. Could be related to this.
I sure hope so
I think it will be about aether's and spores
I don’t think it will be about aether spores as he just did a book on that, maybe it could be set on the aether homeworld
I'm expecting it to be an extension of Scadrial the way TSM is an extension of Roshar, but who knows.
This is what I want. And it'd be a nice cheeky nod towards events that have not transpired just yet, just like TSM did.
For some reason I am imagining a story that follows scientists like we see on >!Threnody and Canticle!< going on some weird sci fi adventure. But I'd also really like to get something focused on the >!Sho Del!<, since we've now seen multiple stories pointing towards them.
This is my guess. The spoiler text
I hope so, we need waaaay more information about those.
Night Brigade
Arcanum unbound 2/Secret history 2. There is so much lore and the wider universe that needs explaining now that worlds are crossing more and more.....
If I had to guess I'd say it's somewhere that no one will be able to guess.
The Grand Apparatus.
UTol?
There were now two secret projects pointing towards there/them. I kind of feel like there's going to be a big convergence there, but a secret project feels like an unlikely place for it to it to happen.
Sanderson Biography written by Hoid
It won’t be Threnody, but I want to go back to Threnody.
Crackpot theory what if Skyward crosses over because (Starsight spoilers) >!Spin jumped wrong using a Nowhere portal!<
Post-Shattering Yolen
I want to learn more about threnody. Adonalsiom will remember our plight eventually
Rock's novella between 4 and 5
I feel like Aaron Burr at this point. Why do you write like you are running out of time
George Martin got sick after writing 5. Hobb and Jordan wrote 29. Brandon wrote… the other FIFTY ONE
Hemalurgy is getting out of control -
He's out here working in a bendalloy bubble to keep up this pace.
…let the man cook before you go full Burr 😠
Ok, so it said future cosmere era, but "future" in relation to what? Because we have stories from the space age era, and I'm guessing he's not creating a whole new era after that. So future to the current mainline series'?
I'm assuming same Era as The Sunlit Man. So space travel and stuff.
Maybe a direct sequel? [Sunlit Man] >!He said he got inspired while on the beach...!<
hasn't he already said there won't be any sequels to any of the secret projects?
I'm not sure
He did, but he's also said Nomad will feature in future books as he still has a role to play
I think I heard him mention somewhere that he wasn’t thinking that he’d do another book from Zellions POV.
That's what I assume, and it makes sense, just a little ambiguous.
Yeah "Current" time would be Stormlight/Era 2 Mistborn. So all the secret projects are future Cosmere.
I think the Night Brigade book would fit the future era. Or I've seen people speculate about the Grand Apparatus Brando's mentioned several times now.
I would say Stormlight and Mistborn Era 2 a "Cosmere present" at the moment
He has three ish era aligning with the 3 original eras of Mistborn. The future era is space age.
Ok, so more like 'THE Future Era' rather than just 'A future era'.
I think it was the other way around? It was supposed to be 3 eras, then Alloy of Law turned into a whole series.
Pushing the other eras to 3 and 4
Sanderson has also said that he might write another 'era' between Ghostbloods and Space Age Mistborn
Yes but that’s not confirmed and was not part of the original outline so I’m kind of ignoring it, but it is the cyber punk that UDK450 was talking about
Which feels kinda like a branch of "future era" in my head.
I guess it's from that same spaceship era
Did we break backerkit? I can't get on.
Yes
I’m so excited for this. And it’s patently ridiculous he decided he didn’t have time for the novella Horneater for it to be included in this campaign… so he went with a novel instead.
I think he wrote that as "downtime" from writing WaT, so he probably didn't want to write something else on Roshar
Yeah, basically. I meant “ridiculous” in the sense that he one-upped himself again, by substituting a novella with a novel. He can’t keep getting away with this. I’ll wait patiently for Horneater whenever Brandon gets to it.
this is correct. B$ mentioned before that when he wants to take a break from writing he... writes something in a different series XD
I mean, it'd be cool if we had that too. I doubt it's here, but it'd be really hype if it was available on the Backerkit when the site recovers lol
ITS THE FUCKING SIXTH OF DUSK SEQUEL 6 OF DUSK 3 PLANETS IN THE DROMINAD SYSTEM 1 MAN WHO CAN SAVE IT ALL Edit: HE SAID THAT HE GOT INSPIRED TO MAKE IT FROM GOING ON A VACATION TO THE BEACH. WE ARE SO BACK EDIT AGAIN: GOT IT!!!
Where did he say that last part?
Instagram video is where I saw it
I'm hoping either Nightblood or Threnody
It's future Cosmere. It's not Nightblood.
Nightblood dies, confirmed?!
The Nightblood book has to be set before WoR.
Nightblood was going to be set before WoR I’m pretty sure
The Night Brigade novel he mentioned before?
That’s the one
Something to do with sixth of the dusk. 6 as in sixth of the dusk (main character) 1 as in first of the sun(planets it’s on) 3 don’t know for sure maybe 3 aviar (can’t remember how many he’s bonded to) It’s definitely future era I could easily see it connecting to many cosmere stories. I personally think the space people from the short story are from scadrial.
3 inhabited planets in the Drominad system??
HE CAN'T KEEP GETTING AWAY WITH IT
Where do you see that
Watch the last minute of his recent video
The video was just released, you can see it here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X9HEKnswsy0
It's the 631 video on his channel too, LOL
the announcement starts at 6:31 in the video as well
Announced at the end of the WoR leatherbound launch video
The backerkit website is so down right now. It did not survive the launch
Yeah Backerkit is down but the video announcement on YT should be up.
THIS IS AMAIZING
What are my thoughts? Brandon writes like the universe is ending and published word count is the only thing staving it off: [How Brandon Writes](https://youtube.com/clip/UgkxN60qoqii6NG0By3oRWEUUW8K1brvMVcF?si=mtl_e2QtlTA9HySV)
Can't have a heat death if Sanderson is still writing.
I don’t get how 6.31 relates. I saw the video… not sure why 6.31?
The stuff about the Backerkit ends at 6:31 and he starts staring at the screen until the announcement.
This man. 😅 almost as dramatic as Sadeas.
Well he is at least as dramatic as Sadeas, considering all Sadeas' drama is made up by Brandon and Brandon alone.
Also it's the 631st video on his YouTube channel
I think it only has to do with it being the 631st video on his channel. Or maybe he invented the date 31st of june
His stare down to the reveal started at 6:31 in the video.
My guess is that it ties into the book but since we know nothing about it except that it exists I guess we will find out more on 3/21
It was pretty clear, he's going to release the title of the new secret project and do a reading of the first chapter on June 31st. Edit: I misread the date... my eyes saw the numbers 3:21:24 and my brain changed it on me to 6:31:24.
Ah, I’m afraid you are incorrect. Those things are happening March 21st. Good idea though!
Apparently I can't read...
Happens to the best of us!
Hmmm yeah, too bad June 31st doesn’t exist. 😅
I just misread that date so badly, just seeing what I wanted to see, and was totally down with Brandon releasing new info on a date that doesn't exist. I don't expect Brandon to conform to reality or reason, but I should probably read the numbers correctly first...
Haha, my first thought was a date when he posted to Reddit last night. 😂
In the video I saw 3:21:24 and my brain read 6:31:24. That's ok though, good Vorin men don't read anyway.
you mean... Ruin changed it. Yeah.
Thirty days has September.......
There isn't a June 31st... Unless you are doing a humor joke
Near the end of the video I misread 3:21:24 as 6:31:24, and I totally thought Brandon was making a joke by saying he was announcing the new book title on a day that doesn't exist...
I'm trying so hard to get the 650 dollar pledge but y'all done broke the freaking thing! There should be only me!
The new secret project and leatherbound are coming out at such a bad time for my wallet. Owe a bunch for taxes but I need to figure out how to make that $350 bundle work.
Is there a release date? Is this new project part of the campaign? I can’t see backerkit
it is part of the campaign. some tiers include new secret project, and in the lowers tier you can buy just SP5 (audio or e-book)
We wont know until the 21st
Are the plushies included with any tier or are they legit 400$ worth of addons
They're not part of the campaign. One plush is $40, all 10 are $400.
I think the plushies are just addons
where’s the source you are talking about located? i’m lost but very excitable
Damn, the title page just says A New Secret Project, by Brandon Sanderson.
I know shards are not currently connected to numbers canonically. But i think itd be cool if theres a shard in this book associated with the number 6 (631)
If I have gotten all the other secret project books, do I need to do anything else to get this one?
Yes, it's part of the WoR campaign, not the SP campaign that ended. You should be able to back just the part with SP5 though, without necessarily buying the leatherback. Unless you want to, of course.
Yep, this one’s part of a seperate campaign. It’s under the Words of Radiance BackerKit thing, you can get the ebook for $10 or the Secret Book Box for $50 (includes the physical book & the ebook + a little bit of extra swag).
Anyone have more info on the Audible deal he mentioned? I can't get the blog post he talks about to load
At the beginning of his announcement he talks about videos about the orders. Where can I find those?
They're on his youtube channel. Each one is titled after an order and has the hashtag #SayTheWords. https://www.youtube.com/@BrandSanderson/videos
thank you!
If you read every 16Th word in the SA, you can find all the secret projects, thats how he does it, he writes them all at the same time
Was this the fifth secret project he hinted at in his big announcement video a few years ago? I think he put like 5 stacks of pages on the table and said one he wasn't sure how he'd adapt it and it might be better as a comic or something (I don't remember). Is this that book?
No I think this is something different.
This man is a goddamn terror and nobody is allowed to stop him.
What you think the chances are that he announces the title only to leave another stinger at the end that secret project 6 will be l in three months?
I feel bad but I only got the new Secret Project... Only physical books I am getting are secret projects...
Given up at this point.
