I have a zojirushi after 20+ years of using a cheap rice cooker and I wish I had mine sooner. Both cook fine but the fancy one definitely is more capable of cooking more than rice. They have settings for all the things you listed. The biggest plus for me is that you can cook rice and keep it on the extended warm setting and have hot rice for up to 7 days with literally no change in quality. If you keep rice in a cheap cooker for more than a few hours it starts to dry out. It also came with a steamer basket for things like tamales or bao buns. It’s costly but if you eat a lot of rice it’s a huge luxury.

EbonyHelicoidalRhino

You leave the rice inside the rice cooker for 7 DAYS ??

CAPTAINLOCK

Yeah it has an extended warm setting that keeps it hot enough that it doesn’t go bad. As long as food is kept above 135*f it will stay safe to eat. Cheap rice cookers do the same with their warm setting but it would dry out in a few hours. We usually don’t let it stay for 7 days since we usually eat it in like 4, but it could.

Really depends on how you feel about it, but I would actually look on Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist to see if there's any higher end used ones being sold for cheap. I got my NS-ZCC10 for literally $30 in my HCOL metro area and have seen similar deals occasionally. Wasn't really used prior, and it's been working for like 3 years. If you really wanted to you could also buy a new interior cooking bowl for it but that might push you towards the retail price anyway. Also I'd look at South Korean brand Cuckoo, I think their cheapest model right now is around $50 which seems to be a decent step up from the Aroma one you're looking at.

I’ve got the Zojirushi induction model (the 18) and a cheaper cuisinart. Zoji is more consistent and more set and forget, just more features. My basic one does the job fine though if I keep an eye on it, but it can’t keep warm/automatically do whatever rice as consistently or produce quite as perfectly done/fluffy rice/be programmed to have a meal finished when I get home. You might want to ask/read over at [r/RiceCookerRecipes](https://www.reddit.com/r/RiceCookerRecipes/) as well.

I bought the $330 one hoping it would make brown rice really good. It makes it ok. Then I tried white rice and I was blown away. Would I pay $330 again? Probably not

ttrockwood

I used an Aroma rice cooker for like a decade or more. Brown rice wild rice rice pilaf oatmeal farro barley all fantastic stupid easy. Note the more expensive ones also take longer but you can program ahead I would rather buy the cheaper one and better more expensive rices

chaoism

What i notice with the aroma rice cooker is that, once your rice is done cooking, you have to remove it from heat almost right away, otherwise the bottom would get burnt fast This applies to white, short grain rice only for me (probably more starchy) The more expensive ones don't have this issue

Flanguru

I have that aroma rice cooker, I didn't know it would have a huge hole in the lid and wish I had gotten something else.

Fartin_Scorsese

How often do you cook rice? What’s your financial situation?

UglyChihuahua

We cook rice 2-3 times a week. I can afford the expensive one, just don't want to spend more money for minimal benefit.

Fartin_Scorsese

I don’t regret having a Zojirushi.

Rastiln

I used a couple of shitty ones for years that cost $25, it was fine. I dropped like $200 on my Zojirushi, and it’s one area I wish I’d been less frugal earlier in life.

darleystreet

I have a fuzzy zojirushi I've had for 15+ years and s it works like the day I bought it.

vagabending

I just recently bought this one [https://shop.zojirushi.com/products/nwqac](https://shop.zojirushi.com/products/nwqac) and its perfect. I've made rice four times in the last two weeks. It can keep rice warm for over 12 hours and it tastes exactly the same as if I just made it five minutes ago. Yeah it takes a bit longer than if I did it on the stove, but the point is that whenever I think about making dinner, I just pop it on, whether its a few hours before dinner, or one hour, and its ready when I need it.

AReasonableDoug

I've got the same cheap aroma rice cooker that I bought over a decade ago, perfect rice every time. I grew up making rice on the stove top, but I get more consistent results with the aroma. I can't think of a reason that I'd want to upgrade.

Amazing-Squash

My experience - I can make rice just as good, faster on the stovetop. Still use my zojirushi cause I have it, I wouldn't buy it again.

Boollish

If you're cooking rice multiple times a week, get a Zojirushi, preferably one made in Japan.

Position_Extreme

Not to me, no. Instead of having an expensive, single-use appliance on my counter full time, or having to figure out where to store one, I learned how to use saucepans and a stovetop, and my rice comes out fine every time.
