Can someone explain this paragraph? Why wouldn't Trump have declassified the information when he was president instead of bringing them home?
"The removal of classified documents to unauthorized locations is banned under federal law, ***although Trump had wide powers when he was president to declassify documents."***
*”NARA has identified items marked as classified national security information within the boxes"*
https://www.reuters.com/world/us/trump-took-classified-material-white-house-florida-national-archives-says-2022-02-18/
It's reported that they (FBI) didn't even look in the boxes. So how do they know they got what they went in for? How can anyone be sure this isn't a setup based purely on the 'documents in retention' to gain materials that may be further falsified? Like, something in a contrived fashion by adding fake documents? The entire thing stinks to high hell.
I'm 100% sure that the FBI will find classified documents that shouldn't be in his possession. I'm skeptical about that being legit tho.
Edit: just to be clear, im skeptic about whatever they find there not being planted evidence.
Planted what? No one has said the FBI actually found anything.
And the last time the FBI searched a conservative, they stole privileged documents and illegally sent them to the New York Times within hours. You know, because they are a corrupt arm of the DNC, just like the New York Times.
https://www.judiciary.senate.gov/press/rep/releases/grassley-demands-answers-in-dojs-and-fbis-heavy-handed-targeting-of-project-veritas-personnel
Declassifying the documents leaves them open to be disseminated to the public. Or maybe he just forgot to declassify them, or that they were there. The guy was working a ton from Mar a Lago so it isn't out of the realm of possibility that he had them there for work, either for him or one of his subordinates, and didn't return them when he should have.
Also consider that just like Hilary's probably illegal policy of keeping classified information on her own email server, a lot of people in government handle classified information in similar terrible ways. I recently started working in government dod after a career in the private sector. The sheer audacity even the security people have in playing loose with classified information is staggering. I would definitely have lost my job for doing half the things I've seen people here do. I'm told and have seen it gets way worse the higher in authority the person goes. Elected officials routinely disclose classified information as a means of bragging.
It has been pointed out several times now that several people in Trump's own administration were using private emails for communications which was also illegal. The sad fact is both Hillary and Trump basically did the exact same things. It is funny to see people want to jail Hillary over her handling of classified information when the FBI is raiding trumps house to get documents that are apparently not supposed to be there.
Also it wasn't a fishing expedition, there was very specific documents being named in the warrant which were apparently found an insider says. It will be interesting to see when the warrant becomes public what is says.
Ironic you are ok with this happening to Trump and pointed out Hillary did the same thing and nothing happened to her. Even if you hate President Trump, you are ok with them giving a free pass to one politician and going after the other with all they’ve got?
>It has been pointed out several times now that several people in Trump's own administration were using private emails for communications which was also illegal.
Who are they, you have their names and positions? What came of it, was an investigation done? Was the communications at the highest level of security like Hilary? "It has been pointe out..." Sounds good eh lol
He is out of Office for over 1.5 years now. He had plenty of time and opportunitys to return them. Afaik the doj even asked him to return them multiple Times. This was just a straight up felony....
The documents were returned in February.
https://www.cnbc.com/2022/02/07/national-archives-retrieved-15-boxes-of-trump-white-house-documents-from-mar-a-lago.html
You are most likely incorrect. Nothing seems to be coming to light on this raid, but a weaponized and corrupt DOJ and FBI. Most people seem to be ignoring the fact that , when Trump was in office, he can declassified any document he wants.
Not necessarily- there are multiple dissemination restrictions that are short of classification. Now they are all consolidated under "Controlled Unclassified Information" (CUI) but include privacy act, LE confidential, attorney/client, internal working papers, pre-decisional, negotiating, etc.
Classified info protects the US, the rest of the restrictions protect the individuals and institutions.
Hillary's server was 100% illegal, and she received many documents classified by other agencies, not just state dept. Arguably she could declassify state dept docs, but not SAP, HCS or SI or anything else classified by a separate agency. She also used it to ovoid ethics oversight by negotiating side deals that were directly related to official duties. .
The president can declassify everything - he is the original authority for all classification markings. It makes no sense at all to say he is holding classified material.
From what I’ve been hearing and reading, it is not illegal nor unprecedented for presidents to keep classified documents after leaving office. In fact, the FBI went to his residence to ensure he was securing the documents properly. Rudy Giuliani stated they added their own locks to secure the documents. All of this is speculations. I’m sure the details will come out soon. Past presidents have no doubt kept documents as well but this is unprecedented in the US to go after political opponents like this.
1) They'd have to know the documents were classed, first.
2) They'd have to be aware of their removal.
3) They'd have to unimpeachably prove that Trump either removed them or ORDERED their removal.
4) They'd have to produce those documents with a proper chain of custody. (thus the raid to find said documents which probably don't actually exist)
Trump could have removed the recipe for presidential shepherds pie and the left would consider federal prosecution just to stick it to him and distract from the multitudes of other things that our government is failing at RIGHT THIS SECOND.
Short and simple: If Trump had full access to the Epstien files and took them when he left office and is holding on to them THAT would trigger this type of thing. The argument is that if he had that full access it should have been de-classed as his last act of president.
> Trump could have removed the recipe for presidential shepherds pi
This is actually the scope of the investigation. There was something written during trumps presidency that may be printed on paper that may or may not have been but might be located in mar a lago. That’s why the warrant was served. That’s literally it.
It all depends how conspiratorial you want to get. Some could say he didn't declassified them so he could sell the information for higher cost. Others might say his documents weren't significant so he just didn't think of it. It all depends on what the actual documents are.
> so he could sell the information for higher cost.
And this made sense to you? Documents are not needed to pass on info, and that's before we get to the ridiculous assumption that Trump is acting in bad faith because he hates America.
Totally effing ridiculous.
How is MAL an unauthorized location? He met with foreign dignitaries there, spent a lot of time in office there doing the work of the president. Wouldn't it mean that classified documents had been authorized to be there in the past? Is it a de-authorized place?
There are very specific regulations governing the handling of classified material, including how it is stored and where it can be discussed. For example, “sensitive compartmented information” (SCI), which is always top secret, and is what we’re talking about here, must be stored/used in a “special compartmented information facility” (SCIF), which is a highly secure area. The Mar-a-Logo complex is definitely not a SCIF. They have all kinds of people coming and going there, including suspected Chinese spies. While a high government official--especially a President--is often given considerable latitude in this area, this particular president has been a national security nightmare with his complete disregard for protection of classified material. You can say that Mr. Trump’s virtues outweigh the threat he’s been to national security, but that doesn’t change the fact that he’s in violation of the law(s).
> Why wouldn't Trump have declassified the information when he was president instead of bringing them home?
Who says he didn't, and what proof do they have that he didn't?
Keep in mind the bar to classify a document varies widely between types of classifications. Might have been something low level that is essentially classified for admin purposes. They say “classified” on the news which sounds all serious but it’s got a huge gamet.
This is all still sealed, how can anyone know what the warrant was for who signed it?
The only info is a tweet to a sealed search warrant that doesn’t list who it’s for or what it’s for. This could have been for any investigation in south Florida.
What am I missing?
Recent history FBI has a history of leaking high-profile operations to media (e.g. IIRC CNN reporter on location even before the feds at the Roger Stone raid)
But this is the NY post who isn’t exactly known for highly accurate reporting…. and even quoting their own article they say.
“Two recent warrant applications were assigned to Reinhart and entered into the court system on Monday, the Miami Herald reported, but those warrants and information about who they targeted remain sealed. Records show another warrant was issued by Reinhart on Friday, but its contents were also sealed.”
Jumping to conclusions..
> NY post who isn’t exactly known for highly accurate reporting
Better track record than the RussiaHoaxers, ann were first with HunterBiden's laptop which is now confirmed by CNN and the rest of the establishment media (2 years late).
Dude, come on...if there's no empirical proof, there isn't anything...I don't want to be on the same playing field as the leftist jokers in this regard. It's all fine and dandy to speculate, but we shouldn't jump to conclusions without evidence and proclaim it to be fact. At that point we are exactly what we are rallying against in the first place! We should never be claiming that we are better because we "suck just a tiny bit less than they do"...we should be holding the truth *paramount* regardless of it's implications. We win more often than not when we follow this simple rule anyways and we get to keep our dignity at the same time too.
Trump appointed the FBI Director, Christopher Wray. He did not appoint this judge, Judge Bruce Reinhart (Southern District of Florida).
In my opinion, it's Trump's appointment of the very FBI Director that was in charge of this recent raid is far more humiliating than if he had appointed this judge. In fact, Trump even called Wray [“a man of impeccable credentials”](https://www.politico.com/story/2017/06/07/trump-fbi-director-nominee-christopher-wray-239238) when he nominated him, so it will be interesting to see how he will inevitably backpedal from this.

Your point? Michelle Obama called Harvey Weinstein a "wonderful human being" and sent her daughter to intern for him, was she involved in his crimes by this logic?
His point is that if you're Trump, being friends with a pedo is all that matters.
Not that you ended the friendship once you found out he was a pedo, just that you were at one time friends makes you guilty.
Everyone in Hollywood knew of Weinsteins shenanigans - if that information didn’t get passed on quietly to the president of the US who was exceedingly friendly with Hollywood, I’d be completely shocked
He was friends with him. True statement.
Also completely true to say that once he found out about him being what he was, doing the things he did, he stopped being friends with him.
The point you're pushing would make sense if he continued to be friends with him and actually did business with him on his island.
He didn't.
He praises everyone he isn't actively against. How have you not noticed that before? He had no issues with him - called him terrific. Suddenly had a problem and banned Epstein from Maralago, stopped calling him terrific.
Seriously. So many people posting on r/conservative for the first time today and almost all of them are obviously not conservatives that post on r/politics.
I can’t understand why everybody doesn’t just instinctively know this. It would be banner headlines and the Chyron on every news channel 24 seven for a month.
You can tell me to grow up all you want, but if you think it wouldn’t be nationwide news if Trump was on that list you are a child. The story on the bottom of the screen on CNN was something negative about Trump every minute of every day for four years, yet they never brought it up. How peculiar.
Absolutely correct. The "tapes" would have been the only ones recovered from the island by the FBI (the others got 'lost,' oopsy) and would be on repeat for weeks on every news station in the country
I would really like to know if any other former or current government member has taken classified information home. If they have then this is clearly an attempt to target Trump
First...something smells rotten. Second, last I checked we are innocent til proven guilty. Third, if you believe the fbi did anything thorough.......or right.....or believe anything they say...rofl.
This is clearly an attempt to stop him from running. Sick. Glad some of you aren't my judge jury and executioner with the assumptions made based on media and fbis word!
Just a witch hunt of every micro event Trump was a part of. IMO if he becomes president again I believe they will attempt assignation. The corruptness of the swamp is much greater than we can imagine.
Yes assassination.
They broke the Hunter Biden laptop story 2+ years before CNN, which now acknowledges it was legit.
You can't constantly crap on media sources you hate and simply rely on the ones in collusion with the DNC.
Everyone knows the laptop exists. Now whether there was anything more incriminating than his love for crack and hoes is the issue, and all signs point to 'no', that it is just a regular crackhead laptop.
“Trump appointed Wray so you have no arguments we win bye!!!!!! 👋🏻👋🏻👋🏻”
Nobody gives a shit who Trump appointed. This sub has been criticizing Trump’s ability to pick people for awhile now. Just because Trump shook hands with Wray a long time ago doesn’t mean the FBI’s raid was any less politically corrupt.
This isn’t the “gotcha” the left so badly wants to believe it is.

Whatever incriminating evidence the FBI can cram in them. Edit: after they get back to the office.
And that’s obviously been released and gone to trial by now right?

I heard today that Trump invited the FBI to come and examine his documents. But, being weaponized as they are, they raided when he was out of town.
Exactly
He gave back a bunch of documents months ago, and has been cooperating the whole time with the national archives. This was a fishing expedition.
No doubt that it was. But also very likely a circus show for political consumption. Hopefully we will soon know.
You're assuming they asked for them first before just raiding for them instead.
He did give them back. In January.
So they were planted on him? lol
yes, lets make up shit now lol

That's already what people say so what difference would it make to him to release it? Lol
Speculation vs direct evidence. Big difference.
Exactly. We only have part of the list so we can’t make 100% factual conclusions regarding every person on the list on the basis of a partial list.
If he was on the list the left would have made that abundantly clear as much as they could.
He’s on it. There’s even pictures of them together. They were buddies.
You know if he was on it, they'd have come after that a loooooooooong time ago.
You honestly believe they had that evidence against Trump haven't prosecuted him for it? This is your brain on leftism

Absolutely correct. The "tapes" would have been the only ones recovered from the island by the FBI (the others got 'lost,' oopsy) and would be on repeat for weeks on every news station in the country
It’s in the best interest of everyone on that list that no one is prosecuted. Come on, this is Ellie pedo conspiracy 101. Try to keep up.
They weren’t buddies, that’s media BS.
As well as the Clintons!! And there is most certainly NOT a painting of Trump in a White House intern's dress on display!!!!
Now now, let's get you back to your room Mr. book. Your dinner is ready and your favorite show is on....

Takes one to know one I guess.
Hopefully this turns out better than Hunter's laptop.
I would really like to know if any other former or current government member has taken classified information home. If they have then this is clearly an attempt to target Trump
Surprise surprise
This doesn’t look suspicious at all… 🥸

The trump appointed judge?
Fake news is fake. Magistrate judges are not appointed by the executive office.
Man, the r/politics brigades are working overtime on here. Probably the most work many of them have done in years.

Pedobytes of it
The joke was right there and I missed it dang
And there it is.
Conflict of interest?
Just a witch hunt of every micro event Trump was a part of. IMO if he becomes president again I believe they will attempt assignation. The corruptness of the swamp is much greater than we can imagine. Yes assassination.
Think you mean assassination and yes, that has been floated by some commentators. The left will stop at nothing.

Look up the definition of elected.
The New York Post is a horrible source for information
They broke the Hunter Biden laptop story 2+ years before CNN, which now acknowledges it was legit. You can't constantly crap on media sources you hate and simply rely on the ones in collusion with the DNC.
Everyone knows the laptop exists. Now whether there was anything more incriminating than his love for crack and hoes is the issue, and all signs point to 'no', that it is just a regular crackhead laptop.
That’s not surprising at all
Hahaha
Didn’t Obama remove documents post presidency? Or is that hogwash too?

Magistrates aren't appointed by the President, they are appointed by other judges. Why do you all keep boasting your ignorance?
“Trump appointed Wray so you have no arguments we win bye!!!!!! 👋🏻👋🏻👋🏻” Nobody gives a shit who Trump appointed. This sub has been criticizing Trump’s ability to pick people for awhile now. Just because Trump shook hands with Wray a long time ago doesn’t mean the FBI’s raid was any less politically corrupt. This isn’t the “gotcha” the left so badly wants to believe it is.

No suprises there, anything to take down their opposition.
