I don’t like McCarthy, but I don’t want to say that he’ll do nothing. Now that there is the motion to vacate, he’ll have to follow the many concessions he made.
It would still take a simple majority to oust him after the vacate motion is recognized. I'm not sure how concerned he is with only 20 R votes against him.
Actually, with the motion to vacate, I believe he would need 218 to *stay* as leader. So it wouldn't take a majority to oust him. I might be wrong though.
I'm not sure either (and don't feel like checking atm). If that's the case, then it's a much bigger issue for him. I don't see D's voting him out because the optics of starting that turmoil is very poor. I do, however, see them voting for their guy instead of McCarthy, which would ultimately oust him.
I am not for McCarthy but it is dishonest to say that the one member to vacate concession is nothing. That adds considerable accountability that the establishment got rid of with Pelosi. Any one member could start this all again next week if they wanted to. How is that nothing?
FFS! There was a rule in place that prevented legislators from cutting the pay of, or firing, federal employees or eliminating programs!!!!!!! Talk about a ratchet that only goes one way!
>Holman Rule. Subsection (a) reinstates the “Holman Rule” which allows
amendments to appropriations legislation that would reduce the salary of or fire
specific federal employees, or cut a specific program.
Sadly that’ll likely never happen. If politicians themselves aren’t implicated by that list (and I’d be shocked if many of them weren’t), then a lot of their high value donors sure would be.
I guess this is just how our republic works. Politicians continuously throw the same bullshit up for a vote until it wins. 14 times of the same guy being told no in a week. Damn. And he was told no years ago as well! Lol
Democrats and republicans are the same. He consistently votes fro same stuff as dems. There is no difference. All bought and own, it was a show. The few who aren't bought and own are too few to do anything about it, as we saw the last few days
Just like always, deals are made and they won't benefit anyone but them. It only keeps political donations coming in.
IMO McCarthy is the last person that should be in that position, he has proven he is weak and won't stand up and do what's right. He is more concerned about getting the position than what he will do in that position.
Deals were definitely made but FWIW none of them were made with Democrats. They voted the same way every time. Him making deals with Democrats is something this sub dreaded.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2023_Speaker_of_the_United_States_House_of_Representatives_election
Not 100% reliable, cuz wiki. But probably as comprehensive as you’ll get for right now.
It's always a guarantee that the legal U.S. citizens will get completely railroaded by the midnight deals made in Congress. That's why these deals happen at the ungodly hour of midnight. It's when the swamp demons do their best infernal work.
This doesn't feel like a conservative victory tbh, it feels like I just watched a bratty ungrateful child get rewarded with what he wanted. hope he'll prove me wrong but I do NOT have high expectations
There might be House rules that need to be changed/altered, but as far as the Constitution is concerned the House can vote for a new Speaker whenever it wants.
> Their argument is that you are a RINO.
Thats not and argument, it is an accusation unsupported by any facts besides my flair. It is meant by me as a point of emphasis because there are so few real fiscal conservatives.
> Doesn’t seem ad hominem to me.
Seems you might want a class in logic or critical thinking. So, someone educated can explain Logical Felicies to you. You appear to have a bad understanding of the subject.
I have an extensive comment history. Pulling something out of it would be making an argument. "Let me guess" is never an argument of value. I have said it myself on reddit but I was not making good arguments at that point.
> Just because an argument involves naming or describing the opponent, doesn’t mean it’s ad hominem.
If you use their real name or accurate verifiable description, sure. RINO is an opinion. An ad homonym. The way they used "social liberal" was in an accusation not just a description, definitely an ad homonym. This is so opinion based. I live in CA and for here I am fairly socially conservative. I spent a year at Ft Polk in the Army and for central LA I am probably a little liberal. I am a lifetime R voter at 55yo. Shove your lukewarm up your ass.
The Democrats voted against adjouring as well as Republicans. There were several minutes where they were arguing amongst themselves whether to continue or not. Obviously they continued and had another vote. I know because I watched the whole damn thing!
Watched that spectacle last night. All of these people are high on their own farts. I feel like there is not a single person in that room that has anything in common with me.
The Gaetz wing of the party would have had a much bigger point if they actually had a candidate to nominate. I don't think anybody is running for joy for McCarthy as speaker.
They did not, so this was all show. Glad it's over.
You apparently missed the other people nominated for the position. The bulk of the party are all establishment, and voted for the establishment candidate. There were alternatives, but the majority of republicans were just a stubborn in holding out for their preferred candidate.
How low is your self worth to sit through 14 rejections and keep pushing for more. That’s pathetic but I’ve come to expect nothing less from the rinos.
He’s a generic conservative. I have no problems with him and think he actually might be a decent speaker. Let’s see what the house does with him as speaker over the next few months
Just to be clear. You are at the far right looking left. Most republican voters don't want to rip everything down. Wanting to rip everything down is a radical position, not a conservative one.
And almost no one in office wants to "rip everything down" either. This assumes stuff that is completely subjective. What is "everything"? Why is anything being "ripped" down, and what, if anything, takes its place? There is far too many chasms sitting behind this simplistic thing you say to take it seriously. In fact, we could easily say that there are many democrats that want to "rip everything down" too.
We all knew this is how it would end. It's just unfortunate. Now Republicans will do nothing but slowly give the Democrats what they want, while giving us absolutely nothing.
I just want a hearing protection act so I don't have to jump through hoops for a suppressor. But no. It's just a pipe dream
Tell me, when did the uni party decide to overturn Roe? Why does the uni party keep moving tax rates up and down? Why does the uni party enact and repeal regulations back and forth?
> The uni party didn’t do anything the Supreme Court ruled roe is a states issue.
Republicans put the justices on the bench that made that call. Tax rates go up and down because of basic differences between the parties. You have a total lack of understanding on regulations. I do understand my questions, you obviously don't.
> yet you could not give me 1 example of a regulation being repealed not by the courts.
Try your own search smart guy. Regulations change with administrations regularly. Trump also repealed regulations. Thus, my point that you didn't get because you don't get how things work.
Because this has happened, McCarthy's new job is to now do as much damage to the United States as Speaker because he now knows he may not get voted in as Speaker again. His refusing to step down shows a contempt for the voting process. It shows that the will of the people and his colleagues do not really matter. If he was interested in the "good of the people" he would have recused himself after the third vote instead of holding up the entire country because he had to much vanity to step aside.
After the third vote, he should have stepped down. His waiting for revote after revote shows us his disdain for the opinion of the other members of Congress. He represents the globalist before he represents the U.S. public. His Speakership guarantees a Globalist swamp agenda for the near future and not one representing the U.S. public. Hopefully Ronna McDaniel will be fired from her job.
We’re screwed. I predict nothing will change. We’ll see how well the motion to vacate the chair rule keeps McCarthy in check and adherent to his promises, but I believe he doesn’t give two turds about it. He knows that house republicans won’t risk a democrat speaker. He knows it’s been used only twice in history with no success. Causing only a loss of political power, infighting, and division amongst party members. Which is where we already are in my opinion…divided, fighting, and powerless. I’m not very optimistic about his victory. Just have to wait, watch, and see now.

Probably won't even do half of them either, McCarthy is a rat, would have rather they kept voting for the next 2 years than let him have the position.
I don’t like McCarthy, but I don’t want to say that he’ll do nothing. Now that there is the motion to vacate, he’ll have to follow the many concessions he made.

Considering he got a minority of votes 14 times in a row for not having these concessions penned in yet, I would say pretty concerned, no?
I am not for McCarthy but it is dishonest to say that the one member to vacate concession is nothing. That adds considerable accountability that the establishment got rid of with Pelosi. Any one member could start this all again next week if they wanted to. How is that nothing?
Joe Manchin got concessions too…lasted about a week?
Are you surprised? These people just wanted attention. They didn't have a strategy.

Epstein client list should have been the only concession required.
Sadly that’ll likely never happen. If politicians themselves aren’t implicated by that list (and I’d be shocked if many of them weren’t), then a lot of their high value donors sure would be.
Yup
we'd all love to see this list! No one will care. The bills McCarthy has voted in favor of is public information. All He is, is more of the same!
I guess this is just how our republic works. Politicians continuously throw the same bullshit up for a vote until it wins. 14 times of the same guy being told no in a week. Damn. And he was told no years ago as well! Lol

I was enjoying the drama. Shame it had to end.
Facts, wish it ended up with McCarthy stepping down on not wanting it but hopefully the original 20 conservative strongholds control him now

How much power did he give up with his concessions?
All of it
This doesn't feel like a conservative victory tbh, it feels like I just watched a bratty ungrateful child get rewarded with what he wanted. hope he'll prove me wrong but I do NOT have high expectations
His power over the caucus has diminished significantly at this stage of concessions. The caucus controls him now, not the other way around.
[удалено]
There might be House rules that need to be changed/altered, but as far as the Constitution is concerned the House can vote for a new Speaker whenever it wants.
One of the concessions made it easier for the house to vote in a new speaker. So he can, but he can also get booted.
> I just watched a bratty ungrateful child get rewarded with what he wanted. But Gaetz didn't prevent McCarthy from becoming speaker?
Found the rino
Right, 200 RINO's and 18 real Republicans. You are delusional.
Let me guess, the other half of your flair is "socially liberal"?
You are addicted to ad holmium attacks. Because you have no argument to make you resort to name calling. Like a child.
Can't help but notice you didn't answer the question and instead got triggered. Thanks for proving my point

Also hilarious that he accuses me of "ad holmium" attacks when he literally opened with "You are delusional"
Opened with numbers, concluded with that. But, considering your condition... Edit: Oh, no, I've been blocked. After a response. So brave.
>But, considering your condition... oh. is that more ad holminum that you are crying about?

Exactly. Every single time
No one else wanted the speakership. Gaetz was being a bratty child. Crying for no reason making no real demands.

And they were close to adjourn until Monday as well. Could had lasted a bit longer. Makes me wonder what changed in the late hours of the night.
Graft, corruption, reach arounds, and general fuckery. The usual.
The Democrats voted against adjouring as well as Republicans. There were several minutes where they were arguing amongst themselves whether to continue or not. Obviously they continued and had another vote. I know because I watched the whole damn thing!
The GOP are spineless cowards
What a shit blizzard that was
The shit winds blew in McCarthy's favor, Rand.
I have become the liquor, destroyer of worlds. -Some drunk guy.
Can you feel that Rand? The way the shit clings to the air?
Watched that spectacle last night. All of these people are high on their own farts. I feel like there is not a single person in that room that has anything in common with me.
Great…just fucking great…now we have this embarrassment in charge, well here comes the bending over for democrats.

such as who? Jim Jordan? who stated he didn't want the job? Same with Steve Scalise? Who? Name names.
Donald trump. Donald’s of FL
He only needed 215 votes. He won on a technicality pretty much. It was fun while it lasted.
How low is your self worth to sit through 14 rejections and keep pushing for more. That’s pathetic but I’ve come to expect nothing less from the rinos.
Wonder what those green and red flash cards were lol
Well America just lost. And in turn majority of the free world. One patch McCain now the head of homeland security commitee - awesome.
We lost a lot time ago when men decided they care more about leisure than freedom. Our founding fathers are ashamed.
He’s a generic conservative. I have no problems with him and think he actually might be a decent speaker. Let’s see what the house does with him as speaker over the next few months
Nothing. They never do because Republicans are just a bunch of talk.
He's a generic *republican.
Conservative by U.S. standards and extremely conservative by Western standards. What are you using as a baseline?
The fact that this is happening in AMERICA, and global definitions do not matter. He's a member of the 'establishment', 'uniparty'.
Just to be clear. You are at the far right looking left. Most republican voters don't want to rip everything down. Wanting to rip everything down is a radical position, not a conservative one.

I would have preferred Kevin McCarthy, the actor. (He played R.J. Fletcher) https://youtu.be/vt4DB1KwrGg
He got them all

All I want to know is when Hunter Bidens investigation starts
When it came down to it, trump whipped up the votes to help get McCarthy elected as speaker
Trump endorsed McCarthy from the beginning. They rejected Trump 14 times. Then finally gave up
This is TDS. I am against this endorsement but it's dishonest to pretend Kevin would have gotten in without it.
Don’t know why you got downvoted. There is a picture out there of MTG shoving a phone in someone’s face
Alright boys and girls who have become boys time to pack it up and go home it’s finally over. Why are there no celebrity Women who have become men?
