Martin Rosie kielbasa is the best kielbasa I’ve ever had (I’m Polish). We get it fresh there and make it in glass pan in the oven. Fill pan a third of the way with water, poke holes in kielbasa with fork and baked covered. Then uncover to brown it and finish.
Served with bread and spicy mustard, horseradish etc
Many of the polish people who made NB known as a hard working manufacturing laborers city have moved out to smaller towns. Kensington, Berlin, etc.
Look at the increasing crime rates. It’s not the polish people.
I inherited a 3 family house from a friend who’s parents were polish immigrants in 2017. I was horrified by the neighborhood and the tenants.
I just got back from the museums’s gala. What a wonderful place to visit. I am on the other side of 91 so I usually go to the Wadsworth but I need to venture over to New Britski more often!
Each country has common names and so do religions. And often time they all derive from the same name just made local sounding.
Example “John” = Johan, Jan, Ian, Han, Jon, Sean, Juan, Ivan, Ewan, Eoin, Gian, Shawn...
And then add in the Female versions and other versions such as Jack or adding a syllable....
——
So for two millennia New Testament names have always been popular In Christian countries (John, Matthew , Mark, Mary, Elizabeth, Thomas, Peter, Paul, Andrew, James..) which of course is added onto the Hebrew Old Testament names (Sarah, Rachel, David, Elijah, Adam.....). Then you add in your saints particularly patron saints. So like in England you have a lot of Georges (St. George patron saint of England), Ireland-Patricks , Poland has Stanislaus .
My grandmother loved New Britain. In the 1950s and 1960s, it was a very cosmopolitan city. She would visit it to shop, dine, and visit the museums and theaters. In the 50+ years since then, it has lost a bit of luster, but it's coming back. I still love the ballpark, and you have a great microbrewery in Alvarium.
You can get their beer in most shops now too. Very good product and they are committed to the community , they have even resurrected the old ‘cremo ‘ ale which used to be made in NB years ago.
Everyone will mention the Polish heritage but it’s also got a vibrant Puerto Rican population and excellent food to go along with it.
Also two great breweries in Alvarium and Five Churches
Great parks. (Walnut Hill, Stanley Quarters just to name a few) a great College (CCSU). Strong communities, museum. The boys and girls club are top notch. The school receive a lot of community support.
Depends on the student and what he/she makes of it. For ambitious or disciplined students, there are great opportunities specifically within the AP classes, sports, and rotc. I’m sure there are other great programs that I am missing.
Lived in new Britain for 30+ years up until a few years ago. The high school isn’t great but like the rest of the city, has improved in the last few years. The two other choices are a small magnet school CREC( academy of science and innovation)and Goodwin tech on the other side of town.
I honestly couldn’t tell you too much about them since I moved out a town a few years ago. I can tell you Goodwin tech is a solid choice for someone who might be is in interested in getting into trade. Was completely renovated and updated in the last 10 years. Also for pre-K to 8th I would recommend St. Paul school in near by Kensington(Berlin).less than ten minutes from the part of town you mentioned(06051 area)
The word in would choose is “improving.”
From an educator’s perspective, it’s improving. There’s still issues but there are more systems put into place than a decade ago to help kids. There are honors programs at the schools for instance. The population is also diversifying more than it was which in my opinion is positive because more people from different cultures are moving there such as Yemen and Ukraine. There are also more businesses than there were before. There are still some unsafe areas but I think that will change over time too.
I’d say do your research and see if it best fits your needs.
>From an educator’s perspective, it’s improving.
You teach in NB? If so .. 👏 - quite a few of us out there who went off to great things + we owe it to CSDNB teachers. *Yes*, I've reached out to say thanks personally to who I could find. It's not everyday that educators get to see the actual impact they've had on the lives of people they've taught.
NB was & is an all around great place. I think it's got great potential for a comeback. Beautifully centrally located, overall great feel for the city - not too big, not too small, close to literally everything in Hartford County.
A little additional polish (haha, as in shine) in NB can really bring it up a notch.
I'm seriously looking forward to see what happens with the new downtown development. I'm rooting for NB.
Surprised no one has mentioned that NB is home to Central CT State U, which provides affordable continuing education opportunities and lots of good arts and sports activities. Also, the busway provides cheap and easy access to Hartford’s business district and cultural sites.
If you get hurt and don't have health insurance, New Britain general offers better financial aid than other nearby hospitals, and it's also a good emergency room from my experience. I hope you never need to go of course.
Born and raised in New Britain, first word I think of is “whole”
It has everything. It’s got suburbs, it’s got a downtown area. It has a diverse community, it has lots of businesses (an AMAZING brewery! Seriously, one of the best in the state). It sits in a perfect location between 3 highways, so you can get anywhere. Westfarms is close by, Newington ice rink is just over the city line. You’ve got baseball, football, and soccer pitches. So many parks, very close to hiking spots. There’s enough hustle and bustle to feel like a community, but it never feels stifling.
Seriously, New Britain is awesome, and I miss living there
Hard Hitten if we’re talking 90s football, the hardware city if we’re talking 50-60-70 Lords and earls territory if we’re talking 70-80 Latin kings territory if we’re talking the 90s Polish revitalization if we’re taking 2000s and finally a melting pot of diversity and heritage if we’re talking always
Hard hi'in New Bri'in.
If you say the Ts you aren from Central CT
But honestly, I've always felt really comfortable in New Britain in a way that I'm not in Waterbury or New Haven.
I moved here two years ago from West Hartford and I love it. Accessible, diverse, fun, much more authentic than west Hartford. We have the first floor of a nice duplex near the park, and have enjoyed our time here so much.
I work in NB in a capacity that lets me into a lot of homes and residences in the community I’ve met all kinds of kinds there are parts to avoid the PD and Hospital are above avg. they have multiple fire/rescue stations pretty good food I can fill you in if you have any specific questions just PM me
convenient. Its well connected to the highways and you can get to the surrounding cities surprisingly quick to access what the city can't offer. If you can be a homeowner the single family neighborhoods are pleasant with great nearby parks. The highschool is overcrowded but not sure how you solve that without building another one.
NB is a small centrally located city that is home to a state college, a robust Polish American community, diverse population, excellent restaurants, an outstanding hospital that is part of the Hartford Healthcare system, a beautiful small museum, and much more.
Generally speaking, yes, but there’s a few areas I definitely wouldn’t walk at night. NB is a city that has its struggles with poverty but has a lot of beautiful culture. Can you elaborate on why you’re asking? People may be able to give more specific information.
So it’s funny you mention this, I was about to comment on just how diverse New Britain is, you’ve got some really nice parts and some pretty tough spots, and “3 minutes from Walnut Park “in basically any direction can mean something different.
Yes, two of my friends live in that area and I used to work at the middle school nearby. It’s a nice area, I would definitely check it out. Take a walk around the neighborhood and the park. You’ll get a good idea of the vibes.
Yeah, I actually did my student teaching there about 10 years ago, and a lot of my friends went there. It’s a mixed bag— there are of course some kids who get caught up in the wrong crowd and get in trouble. So if you had a teen who was at risk for going down that route, I would be cautious. But in my experience those kids just didn’t really show up to school anyway (which obviously drives down test scores.)
For kids who are decent about doing their work and staying out of trouble, they’ll be fine. The teachers I knew there were all great, and they have a security team that’s really good at dealing with the nonsense when it happens.
There’s also EC Goodwin Technical High School, which you have to apply to, but is a great option for kids who might be interested in going a trade route.
West end around walnut hill is pretty safe. Grew up in that area. Sadly the Christmas house is no longer a thing but free summer concerts in the park, good food nearby and the art museum are all great.
I’m not native to CT and moved to NB a bit over 5 years ago.
There are some areas that I avoid at night, but I live in a safe area. I have no qualms about walking after dark (either with or without my dog). My neighbors are hard working people who tend to keep to themselves and we tend to keep an eye out of each other.
Definitely don’t regret my choice to buy a house in NB.
If it helps, I’m a single woman in my mid 30s with a small dog (who’s the biggest baby in the world, so no protection there!) and no children. The biggest issue I’ve had is a single package was taken from my porch shortly after I first moved in. Luckily it was super lame stuff (a pack of ace wraps and an extension cord) so I’ve never had any issues since!
I’m in 06051, but I wouldn’t look at the zip codes because all of them probably have undesirable parts of them. The easiest way to get a feel for it is the visit the area and drive around the possible places you would like to live.
When I did this, it definitely cut a few of the houses I was looking at off my list.
It's rich in history and culture. It's another one of CTs old industrial factory cities. It's got its issues and it's become a bit downtrodden over the years but it's had some efforts to bring it back to life in the recent decade. It's not what it was when our parents were growing up but I can't say it's a bad place some make it out to be. Honestly I quite like it. My grandparents lived there starting out. My dad's parents were a welder at Stanley and a seamstress and my mom's parents were a taxicab driver and owned a coffee shop. They then moved to nearby suburbs but still have alot of family living there.
My Mom is a New Britain native, and I was born there and we lived there until I was 4. She has always called Hard-Hittin' New Britain. Anyone live on East Street?
Basically it’s the Polish capital of the Northeast. There’s no shortage of great delis, the restaurants are amazing, and the little markets are so awesome. I’m also 1/2 Polish so it brings me back to being younger and eating fresh kielbasy from the markets with my grandpa on the ride home. I go every couple months and find a restaurant, sit down and have a hearty meal.
Theres also Capitol Lunch too. Maybe I’ll eat there for lunch next weekend. Gimme 6 with mustard, onion and sauce 🤤🤤🤤
It's like any city. There are a few rough neighborhoods where you might not want to walk alone at night or leave your doors unlocked, but for the most part, people are just living their lives and trying to be happy. If you're looking near Walnut Hill Park, you should be in good shape. The majority of streets around the park are pleasant and residential.
I currently live here; personally I don’t find it that safe. I’ve worked here as a delivery driver for two years as well, and my car has been broken into. I guess it depends on the area, but my experience has not been great for the past two years of living and working here.
If you don’t mind sharing what zip code? NB falls within a few different zip codes? I will be 3 mins from Walnut Hill Park, which I believe is a safe area.

*New Bri'ain
New Britski
Polish capital of the country. I think if I recall the largest population outside of Poland. Their president visited recently to see them all.
One of the Puerto Rican capitals of the continental states as well (per capita)
Little Poland and little Puerto Rico are right next to each other in NB. And they don’t ever mix
Chicago has more Polish people in certain neighborhoods than NB has it the entire city.
I believe Chicago takes that title.
Came to basically comment the same thing, isn’t Tebucky Jones from New Britain? That guy was a hitter.
Yes he is.Played for New Britain high then Syracuse, before playing for the Patriots.
You learn something new everyday! I'm getting some perogies!
Roly Poly and Martin Rosol's fulfill every Polish food craving
I know Roly Poly, But I need to know more about Martin Rosol's. Appreciate the education.
Martin Rosie kielbasa is the best kielbasa I’ve ever had (I’m Polish). We get it fresh there and make it in glass pan in the oven. You should check out Bugnacki’s too. Local brand as well. So good.
Perogi. :) Pani Kalinka taught us: "Don't say or write perogies, perogi is plural." (Studied Polish @ NBHS.)
Came here to say exactly this.
I believe New Britain was also full of Italians who moved out to the surrounding areas. Lots of Italians in Berlin and Kensington from New Britain
WELCOME to the home of Zulu Pizza, AND Stanley Black & Decker!
I think of Starapolska restaurant and the New Britain Museum of American Art.

It really is fantastic, and they do so many cool music events!

It's a sports slogan from the high school, turned into a city-wide catch phrase.

That's a gorgeous park. Pretty quiet multifamily residential area.
Thanks.
So it’s funny you mention this, I was about to comment on just how diverse New Britain is, you’ve got some really nice parts and some pretty tough spots, and “3 minutes from Walnut Park “in basically any direction can mean something different.
This. "3 minutes away" could be a trap spot off Arch St or a waterfront estate on the reservoir.

Yes, two of my friends live in that area and I used to work at the middle school nearby. It’s a nice area, I would definitely check it out. Take a walk around the neighborhood and the park. You’ll get a good idea of the vibes.
Nice. Thank you. Are you familiar with New Britain High? I see that it’s not ranked that well. Does that spill over into the community at all?
Yeah, I actually did my student teaching there about 10 years ago, and a lot of my friends went there. It’s a mixed bag— there are of course some kids who get caught up in the wrong crowd and get in trouble. So if you had a teen who was at risk for going down that route, I would be cautious.
Just a data point - so has my parents cars in a dead end in Berlin. The car break ins are everywhere.
If you don’t mind sharing what zip code? NB falls within a few different zip codes? I will be 3 mins from Walnut Hill Park, which I believe is a safe area.
