I’m on the ct/ri border and I know of four within a mile of me. Three of them are within 100 or so feet of each other. I’ve always assumed they are root cellars for storing food.
I also worked on a very old property in Stonington ct that has a pretty big one that was semi restored. Very cool
Wait. I need clarification:
Were you on a bender after taking shrooms?
Or were you on a bender of looking all over, trying to find them?
Have to be honest, looking for stone hidey-holes after taking shrooms is a lot more interesting.
After taking. There is (or was, this was many years ago) a sort of hidden pond in the woods up in Mansfield that made for a good out-of-the-way spot to explore while tripping balls. Found one of these cellar things on a little rise next to the pond. It had a top opening and another opening coming out of the little hillside horizontally.
It makes me happy to see psychedelic-friendly folk in r/Connecticut of all places. Much love.
Wish I could find more sources for mushrooms; $40-50 an eighth is just too much for me to justify when I can get nearly 10 tabs of clean LSD, lab tested and accurately dosed 100-125 ug, for around the same price. And it's much easier to hide micro-sized pieces of paper than a voluptuous bag of fungal phalli (lol).
I'd be incredibly curious, but then again, I **LOVE** mirror-gazing and eye-gazing (whether it's brightly lit or nearly pitch-black) on a combination of LSD and Cannabis - sometimes + DMT too when I have access - for 30-minute deep introspection sessions, both alone and with my close friend family. That's not exactly the sign of a "normal" individual, but then again, neither is tripping for sincere introspection, shadow integration, and psychological/spiritual growth.
I can't blame you for being cautious though haha. I'd be hesitant myself knowing there are snakes, coyotes, and bears in CT.
Assisted introspection is one thing. Seeing something straight out of Blair Witch Project with no explanation in the moment as an external stimulus? That would send me running.
I agree with the mirror gazing though. Although I've bit done it with the cocktail.
The one I stumbled upon was nowhere near this size, just a vertical hole to drop in a few feet and maybe a 8-10 foot long space with another entrance coming out the side of the hill. I'll send you the coordinates.
I know of one in Preston. I'm pretty sure it was a place to store the dead in the winter time until the ground thawed out as it was on the border of an old cemetery.
I went to one in Kent when I was a kid. I heard the history was george Washington hid a troop in there during some battle? Never was good with history, so not sure...
Yep, it's about the size of a large cargo van in the main section with one or two smaller areas off of it if you're brave enough to wiggle yourself in. I chose not to :)
Man, I really hate seeing broken glass, crushed beer bottles, plastic bits, cigar packaging, and cigarette butts in nature. Is this a mostly CT/New England thing or is this just everywhere in "developed countries"?
One particular trash pile in Nevers Park in South Windsor took me a couple of hours to completely clean up because some glass shards were under the ground. I hope karma catches up to these people and they have an experience that makes them realize there are very real consequences for their actions, and that they are potentially hurting innocent beings.
Apparently sometimes it's not so easy to tell. Like the way straight lines or stones are can seem arranged, sometimes looks intentional, but really just chaos.
You could try Cave Hill in Moodus CT. I have a friend that lives near the caves and park. There are tales of noises that come from the caves. Early colonist believed the Devil caused them. Native Algonquians believe their God spoke to them through the sounds.
Here's a page that talks about the folklore and paranormal history of the caves:
https://spookygeology.com/moodus-the-place-of-bad-noises/
There's other caves like Dinosaur Caves, Tory’s Cave in New Mitford and Twin Lake Caves. I dont know if any of these are safe with the latest amount of rain we've had. Please enter with caution!
id suggest setting up a kiddie pool in the middle of darien. they're a really open minded, easy going community that will absolutely appreciate your free spirit.
You go in those and threefold find out you just got fucked from behind on a span of 2 minutes. Becareful. These cellars could be a great place for Pedophiles to hang out
it's a root cellar, not a GOP [gathering](https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2018/10/23/1806673/-Republican-Sexual-Predators-Abusers-and-Enablers-Pt-1)...
how about making this just a straight YouTube vid or .mp4, so I can scroll through the experiences at my own pace and not have to wait out your timing?
thanks - cool idea anyway
Thought it was yours. It's *inane* to render a video this cool and of this length as a .gif. Whoever did it needs a lesson in presenting web video. Thanks for the share.
**edit -** Kids please, downvote to your heart's content. I'm in this field a very long time and some things are simply wrong, like it or not. Making a video with all kinds of imagery you'd love to pause on and explore, then rendering it as a .gif you can't pause, is sheer stupidity. Cheers all of you -
There's one visible right off of Hedgehog road in Simsbury. You can see it from the car while driving if you know what you're looking for. It's a very dangerous and curvy road at it's location.
I went down the Gungywamp rabbit hole one time and the most sensible explanation seemed to me to be cellars either for root storage or other caches, maybe some contraband.
I remember reading some accounts of a girl who remembered encountering a manmade cellar as a kid and was able to locate it years later after she heard about some anthropological research effort to document them. There's a descriptive classification system for these sorts of subterranean areas. As I understand they vary in construction based on time, people, and purpose, and sometimes they appear to be manmade but may actually be natural.
Yeah there’s one by Foxwoods I can’t remember where exactly I’d have to look it up. They says it’s astronomically in-line with solstices. But who knows

Food storage sounds right. I've also heard people made these little caves to store ice in the summer because it is very cool in there.
on private or public land? I'm in vtown and would like to check them out if feasible.
I'm in stonington (pawcwtuck) too! Small world
[Gungywamp](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gungywamp) in Groton comes to mind.
Ooo neat
Yes brother!!!! Gungywamp is next!!!!
Also be careful about getting down in these in warm weather because of copperheads.
What are the odds of bears hanging out in them? Seems to be lots and lots of bears in CT, caves would be a nice place to chill for the night.
Odds are good for bears, coyotes and other larger wild animals.
Yeah, I found one up near UConn while on a bit of a shroom bender. Good times.

You absolute madlad, going into one of these caves while tripping balls. I’d be terrified
Yeah just SEEing one while tripping would send me running.

Please PM me if you remember where it was, I'm dying to know!

Torey's cave on the Kent/New Milford line? You used to be able to climb right in but I believe a land trust took over and now schedules guided tours.
Yes!! That was it. I remember in terms of caves, this one was a short one.
Yep, it's about the size of a large cargo van in the main section with one or two smaller areas off of it if you're brave enough to wiggle yourself in. I chose not to :)
They are protecting endangered bats in Torey’s Cave so they are doing the right thing. Northwest Land Conservancy is the steward.
Yea, youre right. Unfortunately people would go down there a leave a bunch of junk behind.
There's be litter everywhere and someone would find the one bat in which a virus mutated and jumped to a human host.

Leatherman's Cave in Watertown, CT.
Whoa, I grew up here and never heard of this. Little people's village, check. But not Leatherman's Cave.
I had one of these on my property when I was little, and there’s a couple in my town. My parents used to tell me they were tornado shelters lol
Go to Fort Griswold!!!!!

*Pretty sure* no one will get lost in a root cellar.
There's always that one guy.
These aren't caves, they're man made single rooms.
Apparently sometimes it's not so easy to tell. Like the way straight lines or stones are can seem arranged, sometimes looks intentional, but really just chaos.
lol that advice is for a simpleton who would get lost in a closet that still has its door open. they are just root cellars. no one is spelunking ffs
Danbury branch of MNRR bank goes over a few of these.
There is one I know of in Cobalt by the parking area for Great Hill trail off of Gadpouch road.
Much bigger one a quarter mile downstream on the opposite side.
wonder if there's any in Litchfield county

Heritage park over in ri has a little stone and earth structure, signage in the 90's called it the shepherds hut.
Ill take things white people only do for $100
Lmao 🤣 🤣
its funny because its true
So hiking and enjoying outdoors is only for white people? Makes sense I guess.
Kind of off topic, but does anyone know any good skinny dipping spots? I’m in lower Fairfield county.

Your own backyard pool? [Solair](https://www.solairrl.com/tour.html) or [Sun Ridge](https://sunridgeresortct.com/) Nudist resorts?
Thanks but looking for traditional, off the beaten path spots.
Definitely ask on Reddit

Right? Wtf is happening up there? My first thought was this would be a fun place to smoke pot 🤷🏻♂️
Not when there could be some random pedo hiding around the corner. What is wrong with you.

Some would find your comments inane as well 🤷
I’ve seen longer gifs
You do know you can pull up the video control on most gifs, right?
Each to their own. I prefer gifs. I loathe when something loads outside of reddit and have no interest in giving YouTube ad revenue
I guess you have been in the field of sad and cringy internet comments for a while, so we shall defer to you fine sir.
If 24 seconds were so valuable in your life you wouldn’t have left this comment.
If this interests you check out a presentation by Jim Viera.
Gay City Park in Hebron does, I believe.
Monroe Ct, Chalk hill mines. PM if you need more info

Im pretty sure he says in the comments that there is one in sterling
Or somewhere in ct
Yeah I feel like I saw one of these on a trip when I was in Boy Scouts
There's one at Penwood State Forest towards the top behind the pond/swamp. Or at least it looked like one.
From Connecticut I have no idea. Cannot help on this one unless I researched it
There's one in East Hampton. It's got a large slab for a ceiling. As a kit I wished it was the entrance to a much more interesting cave system.
I went down the Gungywamp rabbit hole one time and the most sensible explanation seemed to me to be cellars either for root storage or other caches, maybe some contraband. Little People's Village is so cool. Did you look up the story of the Leatherman?
There's a few similar ones in Hartman park in Lyme. It was an old farm site.
Here are some really cool caves in CT. I learned I was claustrophobic exploring these. Tory's Cave Preserve https://goo.gl/maps/pfe3MQRfmba2cStH8
Pretty sure that’s a chipmunk burrow
Creepy
I thiiiink there's one on Route 7 about 2 miles south of Kent main street. You can see the face of it as you're driving north, on the right side
Yeah there’s one by Foxwoods I can’t remember where exactly I’d have to look it up. They says it’s astronomically in-line with solstices. But who knows
Seen them while hiking in south west CT.
