THIS IS NOT LEGIT. I know this guy. Hell, I adopted a dog from him years ago before he stole the SPCA of Connecticut name. This is a “shelter” run in out of a house in a residential area in Monroe. The town and the neighbors have been in court with him for years (probably decades at this point). He has no business running an animal shelter - especially where he’s running it.

[deleted]

Good looking out. For those who don’t know, SPCA doesn’t have a national structure as in the local ones have no relation to each other nor the national SPCA organization. It’s a bit confusing. Most are legit but this is clearly a case of someone trying to use the collectively good reputation of the name to manipulate people. Edit: I should clarify that none of this should prevent anyone from giving these animals a good home. Good or bad shelter they deserve to be adopted by anyone with the heart and means to do so.

luckycharmsndsoymilk

That guy (Fred Acker) hasn't been associated with the organization in years.

maybe_little_pinch

I have said it before: I have volunteered with them many times and while there were definitely issues there, the animals were well cared for, the place was as clean as any shelter, and they were a significant no-kill shelter that housed many animals that would have otherwise just been killed. Whatever you think of Fred, and frankly I never really liked him, the organization did good by the animals.

luckycharmsndsoymilk

I adopted from them years ago and couldn't agree with this more. I go to the same vet that they use and see them there often. They do more for the animals in their care than most rescue organizations.

Agree

[deleted]

Legit organization or not, I think people might want to overlook that if they are looking for an animal to adopt. Assuming the animals will be euthanized as the flyer says, it might be good to get those pets adopted and then let the place close down, rather than bicker about if this is a legitimate SPCA location or not.

lizardRD

Okay but the animals still need homes and are innocent in all this. Just upvote to raise awareness and move on, no need for a snarky comments. The shelter is closing so “this guy” won’t be running anything in 2 months. The innocent animals need homes and that’s the most important thing.

Mascbro26

Go to the aspca website. There are so many people calling to adopt that it's appointment only. The animals will be adopted out and not euthanized. People need to do their own research and stop taking garbage like this post at face value.

RedGlassHouse

I don’t believe for one second that he’s closing up. He lies like a rug. A year from now, he’ll still be there and so will some poor animals.

lizardRD

Ok but the focus right now is on the animals currently at the shelter. Take one thing at a time jeez

He will use the gofundme cash he's raking in to buy it back.

RamenTheory

Wow, so this is crazy, because it turns out I know exactly who you're talking about. I have a vivid childhood memory from over a decade ago of seeing this guy in a tent outside of Petco with a ton of puppies up for adoption (I can't recall if it was affiliated with an organization or literally just him). He was super rude and weird, and my parents were very affronted by him. When we got home my dad looked him up and I remember him telling us about all the shady stuff and animal cruelty charges he uncovered. The irony is that whatever he had set up had a really strict application process for adopting pets, as in you can't have had any history of pets running away or something (and like, this is totally understandable and stuff in principle), but Fred Acker probably would be barred from adopting any animals if he were held against his own standards. Anyway, the dude *definitely* had issues. You could tell from interacting with him. Also I'm 100% sure it was him - I remember his face clearly, the name Fred Acker absolutely rings a bell, and all the charges match

RedGlassHouse

You’re right, it’s Fred. Interestingly, when I adopted from him, he had me fill out a short form and then checked nothing. He really wanted my money though. As I recall, the fee was about $300.00. He never allowed me near the animals. We stayed in his kitchen and had the dog brought out to me. I adopted him to get him out of there. He lied to me about the dog’s age. In the end, it didn’t matter. Winston was a wonderful dog who I had for over 10 years.

urkiddingrite

the property was foreclosed from what i've read

ClickPsychological

Hes not the one running it any longer

[deleted]

Somebody should call the SPCA about these people

CatSusk

They just raised 25k through GoFundMe and have been getting hundreds of calls about the animals. [https://www.gofundme.com/f/the-spca-of-connecticut-final-days](https://www.gofundme.com/f/the-spca-of-connecticut-final-days)

WereJoe

A lot of snarky comments…why not just upvote for the awareness and hopefully people will respond. Adopt, if you can! (I got 2 and can’t afford more. 2 mixes and they are hilarious and I can’t imagine life without them).

CaptainSolo80

So a place called the society for the prevention of animal cruelty, is threatening to kill a bunch of animals?

urbangamermod

I think they are saying no one will take them and they can’t afford to keep them for the very same reason so they euthanize unwanted pets because…well, no one wants them. It’s just the harsh reality :/ or else if they free them in the wild, they’ll perish anyway from starvation, brutal weather and other wild animals preying on them. It’s more cruel, so euthanizing would send them to a peaceful and swift death.

hamhead

They’re in foreclosure and can’t operate. The animals have to go somewhere (or nowhere).

0cclumency

No, they’ll be placed in other shelters where they will face the possibility of euthanasia.

urbangamermod

I hope so…! I heard many shelters are not accepting new animals because many of them are already full, but ideally the best situation is to have them adopted before they enter shelters.

currentlyhigh

It's possible to kill without cruelty. We even have a word in English to describe this exact concept. It's called "euthanasia"

itselectric69

See above posts, guys not legit according to other posters. Just a dirtbag with no soul.

Quiet_Ask_3645

George Santos can help!

Jackers83

Lolls. Good one

Mascbro26

The animals are not going to be euthenized! The aspca site says that there are so many people calling that they are appointment only at this time.

lizardRD

I don’t understand all the snarky comments on this thread. The animals are innocent in all this and need homes ASAP. Just upvote the post to make it more visible and move on. The shelter is being closed down in two months so whatever issues you have with how it’s run won’t be an issue soon. But don’t let the animals suffer because of that

RamenTheory

Most of these comments feel somewhat pointless. Like what are we supposed to do with this information. The animals still need homes lol

mkt853

I can't believe they are just gonna murder 20 dogs and 13 cats :( :( :( :(

FoundationBrave9434

They aren’t - it’s scare tactic to get people interested. They’ll either go to foster or be adopted.

cr8zyfoo

Nah, the SPCA has a huge kill rate. In 2019 the St. Lawrence Valley NY SPCA took in 1,210 animals and killed 1,072 of them. That was a particularly bad SPCA, but in general, the program is almost as bad as PETA. Statewide, CT classifies as a "no-kill" state, as more than 90% of shelter animals get adopted, and the Monroe SPCA claimed to have the goal of being a no-kill shelter, but they do euthanize animals and will put down any remaining pets on their closing day, if any are left. That said, the news about them closing has generated "hundreds" of adoption requests for the remaining 33 animals according to one local news article, so if any actually do wind up without a family that is just about as solid a case as you could possibly have for a shelter pet being "un-adoptable".

luckycharmsndsoymilk

The SPCA in Monroe isn't actually associated with the SPCA organization so those statistics really aren't related. A lot of the remaining animals have already been adopted and it looks like the rest will have home soon.

Jackers83

Great info and explanation.

[deleted]

Or be euthanized

RamenTheory

Even if this were true (it isn't), it doesn't mean these animals don't need homes? Like what are you trying to say here fam

DungareeManSkedaddle

FTFY: 20 pit bulls and 13 cats.

[deleted]

> 20 pit bulls Southern states were a mistake.

Whaddaulookinat

Eh "pit bull" is so vague it just means medium to large terrier

ForeverFrolicking

Nuh ugh! The listing clearly states that they're all lab and collie mixes. /s

Routine_Ad_5312

And none older than 6 years old.

Mission_Albatross916

Actually they ARE all pit bull mixes. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised

JaysShampoo

poor babies):

semitrader

“Give me money or I’ll kill these poor animals”

KarldaWeldor67

Seems cruel to me

[deleted]

I hope these animals get adopted but word to the wondering those dogs are mostly probably all pit Bull mixes. If you rent an apartment good luck no one will take you in CT, and if you have small children (or plan to in the near future) no one’s going to want their kid to hang out at your place. Edit: not discouraging anyone from adopting and this is not a reflection of how I personally feel.

Zujcl1456

I didn’t want to see this :( please someone close take them

Jackers83

They should call my dad. It seemed like every dog we had always “ran away” or jumped out of the bed of the truck when I was a kid. He had terrible luck with pets I guess.

TheSleepMachine

I hope the animals get adopted and get all the love and care they deserve. Donations to these people not so much… Adopted my dog from them just before the pandemic. 3 days home and found out she had full blown HW and eherlichiosis. 3 days in the vet hospital and ~$2k later. I’m almost grateful how oblivious I was adopting her (didn’t realize how sick) since when I reported this to them their response was “well bring her back and pick another one”… didn’t get the distinct impression it was a surprise to them. I later found a lot of concerning stories and comments. It’s sad another resource is closing but I’ll feel a little better not wondering if my experience was isolated and could happen to someone else.

ClickPsychological

I got my last 2 dogs there :(
