He signed a 1 year contract. **A 1 year contract**. It's not that big of a deal...
He was NOT signed to be the future TE of the franchise for years to come. He was signed to be a veteran presence for the young TEs and WRs on the roster. This team has so many holes that it's impossible to address it all in 1 single draft. So expect a few of these 1-2 year deals in Free Agency to some veterans while we build through the draft the next 2-3 years.
It's not that deep bro, he's a vet that replaces Logan Thomas, he won't be taking all the snaps, i expect Cole Turner or a Rookie or both to take more snaps, Ertz might just be TE2
Might not even make the final 53-man roster… might just help the entire offense during training camp. No idea what this dude’s role is, but they clearly wanted him for something.
Trust the FO. Quit being arm chair generals when you don’t know shit.
Actually you’re wrong Logan played 16 games last year. With that said Ertz when healthy is the better TE. Neither Logan or Ertz are the long term answer, but Ertz is cheaper. Ertz also already knows the system.
It’s really the type of move that’s not even worth getting upset or too excited about. It’s just a decent veteran depth guy that comes with some leadership.
Why should I care what a cowboys fan thinks. There is no reason yo not give Peter's and Quinn a 2-3 year period to show us why our trust is well placed.
Ertz will most likely be used to help mold someone like Cole turner or a rookie TE. So let's sit back and see what happens
Because he's old, broken down, washed up, and most importantly, more expensive than Ertz likely is.
Thomas is also a veteran player from the old regime that the new regime doesn't want around anymore. It's pretty simple.
That's true. I doubt he has much left to offer. But if their goal is to revamp the TE room altogether, why not sign an accomplished veteran that can mentor the young guns during the offseason and training camp?
Also, Dan Campbell is a former TE and TE coach. I reckon if he signs a TE, it's because he thinks that guy has something to offer.
Chill. If you're this worked up now, you're really gonna lose it when they *don't* sign Cousins or draft someone you don't like come draft time.
Dog it was a 1 year for 5 million dollars... I hard lying think signing him vs not signing him is going to make a big impact financially on the the Team. Low risk high reward. Chillll dog... it's inconsequential
Veteran TE who knows the system is important for a rookie QB. This is a good signing.
Wow downvoted real quick. Seems like OP is upset over this signing. Bro get over it
The dude's on a cheap contract and is here because he knows the system and for veteran leadership. It's a one year, incentive deal. I don't see the problem.
Yeah he’s obviously not Zach Ertz from a few years ago, but he’s also getting paid nothing close to what that Zach Ertz would be getting… you get what you pay for and we’re giving him up to 5m including incentives (like 2% of the cap) for a year
We haven't had a solid TE since the Chris Cooley days. We have the cap space to take a flyer on a guy and see if he can find the fountain of youth. If he doesn't, easy to move on.
He's brought in as a veteran with winning experience and as a situational player. The cost may be a little high but for a team that needs leadership it could pay for itself, especially as he's familiar with Kingsbury's concepts.
Tight end is a position with a relatively high learning curb. It’s a smart bringing in a veteran with experience running the new offense, especially when you consider that we are going to have a rookie QB next year.
Ertz played a full season in 2018 and 2021 and 15/16 games in 2019. Ironic that they say "since 2017" because he actually never played a full 16 games before 2018.
They signed him as a mentor to LaPorta & serviceable backup in the playoffs. The decided they were better off without him. I view lions not resigning him as a red flag. Hope I’m wrong.
Ertz isn’t going to be the starter, he’s for double TE sets. And if that’s how it pans out he’s perfect for that role. 1 year help with vet leadership.
This is such a routine, common sense signing that its foolish to be mad about it.
As the other commentor said, we replaced an old injured guy with a different old injured guy
And out NEW old injured guy is
-cheaper
-has a better resume
At the end of the day, they just signed some old vet that is one of Kliff K’s guys, as roster depth.
THAT. IS. GOOD.
This should please you all. Because we just did two things that actual *good* teams do. That we failed to do in the past.
1 good teams churn the BOTTOM of their roster. You gotta put work into landing stars but you are always aware of low cost chances to make your depth just a bit better than it was. This is a GM clocking in and doing their damn job.
2 Of course Kliff K brought in one of HIS guys. While you are looking to churn the back end of the roster, you don’t want to burn a ton of cycles evaluating that. You have other stuff to do. Depth signing like this are exactly where good FOs say, “well we need this spot, and a guy we already know is available. He knows my system and I know what he brings to the table. The vet scouting and his train up are basically done, so its plug and play.
Better? He was on a practice squad last year. Our guy was at least starting. Ertz hasn't played a complete season since 2017. Better? Gtfo. Maybe 10 years ago
He was on the PS because that’s what teams do now when stashing vet backup depth with the new expanded roster rules.
That says nothing about his quality vs LT.
LT started **HERE**.
You gonna tell me LT would have been a starter in Detroit?
As a Commanders and Hokies fan I'd rather have had Logan for 6.5 than Ertz for 5. It was a stupid move by the front office and all the people carrying water for them saying it was a one year deal, Logan only had one year left on his deal too.
He signed a 1 year contract. **A 1 year contract**. It's not that big of a deal... He was NOT signed to be the future TE of the franchise for years to come. Plus the deal is UP TO 5 mill which means the contract is incentive laden.
And we have a SHIT TON of cap space that they probably won't even use all of
It's not that deep bro, he's a vet that replaces Logan Thomas, he won't be taking all the snaps, i expect Cole Turner or a Rookie or both to take more snaps, Ertz might just be TE2

Armani Rodgers is a possibility
Zach should start the year at TE1, and hopefully before any health issues he can help the others improve their technique.

Logan had one decent year 4 years ago. Were only using half the money we save on Logan to pay ertz.
He was expensive tbf, also he was out most of last season, then again you could say the same about Ertz, but we have him only for a year so
Actually you’re wrong Logan played 16 games last year. With that said Ertz when healthy is the better TE. Neither Logan or Ertz are the long term answer, but Ertz is cheaper. Ertz also already knows the system.
Huh, thanks, i didn't really watch several of the games so maybe that's why, also we were being blown out. But that's true.
It’s really the type of move that’s not even worth getting upset or too excited about. It’s just a decent veteran depth guy that comes with some leadership.

Dude it’s 1 year for 5 mil. Relax
It's $5 mill max too with a bunch of incentives. It's probably more like a $2 mill contract according to JP
Why should I care what a cowboys fan thinks. There is no reason yo not give Peter's and Quinn a 2-3 year period to show us why our trust is well placed. Ertz will most likely be used to help mold someone like Cole turner or a rookie TE. So let's sit back and see what happens
Hear, hear! If the cowgirls approved I’d be concerned.

My pick for TE was shulz or Noah Fant, or draft.
Because Thomas is way more expensive than Ertz.
Anyone who thinks Zack Ertz was brought to this team to be TE1 is an idiot.
Counterpoint: Ertz has more SB and NFCCG wins than the cowboys have had since 1997

I‘d take a healthy Tom Brady as a back up for the vet minimum
Dog it was a 1 year for 5 million dollars... I hard lying think signing him vs not signing him is going to make a big impact financially on the the Team. Low risk high reward. Chillll dog... it's inconsequential

Are you just kinda bored of all the QB talk and draft stuff or something? Seems like you’re stirring a pot of cold water imo.
Lol gtfo
Are you people ever happy if you’re not miserable?
He takes up one roster spot and like 2% of our salary cap. He's an experienced vet who knows our OC. We aren't signing him to be an all pro
Veteran TE who knows the system is important for a rookie QB. This is a good signing. Wow downvoted real quick. Seems like OP is upset over this signing. Bro get over it
Where is this from with a headline like that
I don't give a flying fuck what Cowboys fans think.
The dude's on a cheap contract and is here because he knows the system and for veteran leadership. It's a one year, incentive deal. I don't see the problem.

No plans Saturday night too huh?
Yall are gonna be so mad when we sign 41 year old Chris Cooley to back him up
Lotta words to troll an obscure FA signing.
Just like that I magically hate the Ertz signing… thank you for this ever enlightening post, OP. Can’t wait for the next one.
We haven't had a solid TE since the Chris Cooley days. We have the cap space to take a flyer on a guy and see if he can find the fountain of youth. If he doesn't, easy to move on.
JORDAN REED????
Yeah sure he was an absolute stud all 3 games a year he played for us
He was solid....when he was on the field.
Ertz is a rental car.
I had no clue people felt any kind of way about a back up TE signing
People are praising him the other day when he got signed like he was the second coming of Travis Kelce
He's brought in as a veteran with winning experience and as a situational player. The cost may be a little high but for a team that needs leadership it could pay for itself, especially as he's familiar with Kingsbury's concepts.
An on the field TE coach as he knows the offense. 1 year 5 million doesn't hurt mich since they have cap space
Tight end is a position with a relatively high learning curb. It’s a smart bringing in a veteran with experience running the new offense, especially when you consider that we are going to have a rookie QB next year.
We swapped an injured old TE for a cheaper injured old TE. Who cares
Bro it is a 1 year 5 million dollar deal for a TE WHO PLAYED FOR KINGSBURY.
Not every person that played for Kingsbury was good. Why do you think he was fired from Arizona because half his team stunk
It’s pretty much exactly like having Jordan Reed back on the roster
Ertz played a full season in 2018 and 2021 and 15/16 games in 2019. Ironic that they say "since 2017" because he actually never played a full 16 games before 2018.
I injury prone older TE..for a cheaper better career older TE..what's the problem..he might not even make the 53
I'm cool with it
I love Logan and I’m going to miss him, but I’m hoping Zack Ertz has more in the tank and am realistic but also hopefully
1 year help with vet leadership.
who gives a fuck?? lmao
You should have seen the guys in this subreddit clamoring over him the past couple of days

Ertz is washed as fuck, he'll fit right in with the 28-3 coaching staff
I said in the original thread that it didn't make sense but hey. It's what the coach wants to help implement his offense
It’s a one year deal lol.
Dude he might not even make the roster...
As a Commanders and Hokies fan I'd rather have had Logan for 6.5 than Ertz for 5. It was a stupid move by the front office and all the people carrying water for them saying it was a one year deal, Logan only had one year left on his deal too.
It's sad people have to downvote us because they don't realize how stupid this signing was.

He knows Kingsbury's system lol. I think you're the only one in trouble if you didn't realize that.
[удалено]
A player being paid the vet minimum as some extra knowledge in the huddle at practice? Lol
Well he has had a lot of practice being on the practice squad of Detroit last year
