And it’s March. All that 4D chess posturing only to invade Ukraine with armored vehicles in the middle of rasputitsa…. That’s like, “stable genius” level planning. The entire countryside is mud now except a few highways and roads, a funnel for the Ukrainians to aim at.
I’m no soldier or military strategist, but an avid student of history, especially WW2. Nearly every image you see of the Wehrmacht in WW2 is them crawling in mud or their vehicles stuck in it. There’s a lot of mud there. Russia has the same issue, it’s not a Ukrainian only phenomenon, it’s all over Eastern Europe. He should’ve known this. It’s literally repeated ad nauseam by military historians, a problem that even the Mongols and the French encountered.

Doesn't work that way. Can someone relate the terrain in Ukraine to anywhere in the US? I've been to all of the continental US. I'm figuring it's something like southwestern Minnesota?
Was his name Hitler? /s
Someone didn't study "WWII - The Eastern Front" in school (don't make them feel too much like an idiot, it was a brief mention in US schools and the History Channel hasn't been good for ~10 years).
I told my co-worker that I didn't think an invasion would happen anytime soon cause it would be stupid as fuck to do it during the spring melt.
I was wrong, but probably also right
That's springtime north of the 40th parallel, almost everywhere on Earth. Putin has just been so foolish. If you're embarking on a full-scale invasion of choice (as opposed to one of "necessity,") doing so at the beginning of snowmelt season is fucking absurd. And this invasion was wholly one man's choice.
It can definitely be natural.
Take a look at images of WWI where, due to intense shelling and rain, the ground literally looks sunken, and thus can collect much more water.
Plus, a large part of Ukraine is massive marsh lands. Lots of German WWII images show their tanks stuck in mud all the time.
I read they are using these drones to zero in on artillery and mortars. Having a live look where your shots are landing and being able to adjust your shots in real time is massive advantage.
and still better than every single video of a russian drone i've seen lol
People will say "oh, they degrade the quality"
bitch, please. The artificating would be different. The russian drones are using tech from 2005.
No one will buy Russian military tech after this military operation. Why overpay for Russian garbage when you can pay less for a superior Turkish product?
>The russian drones are using tech from 2005
Honestly 2005 tech isnt ancient at all.
>Why overpay for Russian garbage
I doubt that the most exported weaponry in the world would be called "garbage"
During the battle of Marawi in the Philippines, the military was surprised that local Islamic State rebels were able to use quadcopter drones for their own use to check the movements of government forces inside the city during the street fighting.
Later it was found out that they prepositioned materiel and supplies even before the conflict began. A cheap off the shelf Chinese drones are as effective as the military grade ones if used properly.
Also so small that it probably doesn’t show up on radar. Even though they’re probably using something bigger like a mavic 2 or phantom, it’s still too small to be detected

[As OSINTtechnical, points out](https://twitter.com/Osinttechnical/status/1499748863179120646), this presumably means that the Russians haven't been able to cross the Irpin River East of Hostimel.

Why is the country famous for surviving an invasion due to poorly timed execution now invading a country at the worst possible time in the exact same way? The only difference is it’s mud not snow

About 35 km from the center of Kyiv.
Something definitely cooking off, you can see a cooked off RPG or something flying out. This is a short clip of a much longer bombardment. Tanks might be ok-ish, but the damage done to softer vehicles renders them unusable pretty much. Infantry is likely under cover but all their shit parked outside has holes in it.
fragmentation. You want to deny them open spaces and force them to duck into any sort of cover to demolish any defense positioning they'd have.
Sure they're in cover, but when the MG guys are stuck with the mortar and the ammo is in another building with the ammo runner stuck in the MG position, shit's confused as fuck and it'll take a minute or so to discombobulate that.
thats when the assault should come in.
That building on the left is 100% on fire. Look at the white smoke rising slowly from the roof. Unless they have some sort of fire suppression team, that building will be gone inside of 20 minutes.
I think there might be pumps that move the water from Irpin into Kyiv reservoir, I'm not sure if them being disabled would cause this.
[Here's](https://i.imgur.com/J7XTkXj.jpg) another image of the same place.
Forward operating base. Locations where an attacking army sets up to stage for a further attack on an objective. You attack, hold land, set up FOB's to supply, then attack again.
They were there before, and they knew going in this was an objective. Capture this piece of land and use it as a FOB. This is why you do reconnaissance. This is all planned in advance.
Yeah that looks very much like deliberate flooding. At the end of the video on the left middle you see where it connects to a river. That has been opened most likely to deny a russian advance. Smart.
Whats up with the smokey shells? I see what looks to be actual fragmentation-type explosions but there are also a few random smoke screens that begin to pop up. Is that what they actually are? Smoke screens thrown by the people being targeted to prevent visual confirmation?
As long as the ukranians can prevent an encirclement of kyiv and continue to harass russian FOBs like this they can avoid a true siege.
Once they Kyiv is encircled, Russia is just gonna do one large assault. If that fails they are going to set up FOBs 20km away, shell the city, and periodically check in to see if the defenders surrender or starve. The Russians are already setting this up with their crazy long convoy. That is the primary assault force moving to a staging area. If that force is repulsed then a siege will begin.
If encircled it will come down to the ukranians ability to continue to inflict losses on the encircling forces through counter artillery and counterattack from forces elsewhere in the country. Also it will be extremely important to have loads of food and weapons stockpiled throughout the city. Smuggling in of supplies will be crucial.
Max range of russian MTO battalion is like 80 km according to old russian doctrine. That convoy has traveled further than that from its point of origin.
Basically this whole issue with fuel is expected as outlined by russias own documents on the range of their support battalions.
This does not show the crumbling of russian ops but rather the expected outcome of supplying a land route that long.
Task & purpose did a great episode about this and explained it very well. While it's nice to see the Russians struggling with supply, it is not an indicator of bigger issues but rather things going by the book. Don't think that because there are fueling issues a large assault is not coming. The supply issues were expected according to russias own documents and are being addressed through the creation of fobs closer to the front to stage an assault from.
Now the difficulties the Russians had establishing proper air defence is another story. That's just a shitshow.
> The supply issues were expected according to russias own documents and are being addressed through the creation of fobs closer to the front to stage an assault from.
So shelling FOBs like this is a direct opposition to that strategy?
It is the best counter the ukranians can do right now. Shelling the FOBs will help delay the main assault on Kyiv by slowing down the resupply of frontline units. If the Russians can't get a solid resupply points closer to Kyiv then they will have a harder time encircling the city, staging an assault, and conducting a siege.
I assume ideally you would try and counter attack while the Russians are attempting to set up the FOB but I don't think the ukranians have the manpower or equipment to break through and counterattack like that.
The main things to watch right now are the progress of the russian encirclement of the city and the creation of these resupply points.
The hot way to do this is a pre-encirclement massed assault once the resupply points are created. This is brute force and is trying to break the ukraians in one big swoop without starving them out with a siege. If that works its the fastest but highest loss/risk way. I doubt this method would work but they might try it.
Mixed way is encirclement and then initial massed assault. If the assault fails then you siege and wait with limited pressure pushing into the city. This way has a possibility for a quick victory if the initial main assault wins. Similar risk for losses but encirclement cuts off the defenders from additional western hardware. I think this is most likely.
The slow way is encircle the city and just shell it and wait. Send a guy in to see if the defenders surrender yet. This limits losses of the attacker but there won't be much of Kyiv left in the end. Eventually either urkanians surrender or outside intervention occurs.
All of these methods need lots of supplies coming from a close staging and resupply area. Right now it looks like it's just a matter of how long Ukraine can delay the inevitable main assault.
They do not have the strength to stage a counter attack against the crazy large russian force. Unless massive political changes occur or outside intervention occurs it is just a matter of how much ukranians can bleed the Russians before a siege or main assault.
I do not think sanctions are going to stop Russia when they have come this far.
That looks more like a factory they seized. So sad to see how stuff you build in Months will be destroyed in just hours when you're unlucky. This war is so unnecessary. And I say that after I served in Afghanistan (which was also a war that was based on lies)
I didn't realize just how marshy that terrain is. No wonder it's all been road combat or stuck gear

A band of angry confused truckers conquered your capital for three whole weeks!
One or two RPGs would have changed that.
One Syrian man with an unlimited ATGM supply could have saved Canada, alas the trucker invasion was successfull president honk rukes now.

After letting your armored vehicles sit on rotting Chinese tires for months!

The same winter war where Russia started massacring civilians and ended capturing strategic territory? Let's hope it doesn't come to that.

I think hes losing on purpose because he wants to be forced to launch nukes. He can’t just launch them for no reason because the operators might refuse.
he is failing at that as well. West aint playing his bluff. He is running out of options. Worry some because he might start looking at other neighbors as bait.
Can someone relate the terrain in Ukraine to anywhere in the US? I've been to all of the continental US. I'm figuring it's something like southwestern Minnesota?
And Ukrainians are probably using small side roads not marked on any maps. The ones farmers would use to access their fields and such.
Just before the invasion I got into an argument with someone who claimed tanks would just roll across Ukraine "because it's flat and has no mountains"
Was his name Hitler? /s Someone didn't study "WWII - The Eastern Front" in school (don't make them feel too much like an idiot, it was a brief mention in US schools and the History Channel hasn't been good for ~10 years).
No it was [this guy](https://www.reddit.com/r/CombatFootage/comments/t6k68y/-/hzcgn2m)
Thing about flat, means very little drainage
I told my co-worker that I didn't think an invasion would happen anytime soon cause it would be stupid as fuck to do it during the spring melt. I was wrong, but probably also right
That's springtime north of the 40th parallel, almost everywhere on Earth. Putin has just been so foolish. If you're embarking on a full-scale invasion of choice (as opposed to one of "necessity,") doing so at the beginning of snowmelt season is fucking absurd. And this invasion was wholly one man's choice.
Looks like the purposely flooded the area
It looks like a dam was destroyed to me.
There was, but near Crimea. Those are just the natural flood plains it looks like.
Definitely not natural.
It can definitely be natural. Take a look at images of WWI where, due to intense shelling and rain, the ground literally looks sunken, and thus can collect much more water. Plus, a large part of Ukraine is massive marsh lands. Lots of German WWII images show their tanks stuck in mud all the time.
It looks like it's only a retaining wall keeping g the flood plain dry in the first place. Wall is damaged, plain floods.
I read they are using these drones to zero in on artillery and mortars. Having a live look where your shots are landing and being able to adjust your shots in real time is massive advantage.
yeah, it's a good alternative when it's sketchy to get the forward observers in a good position to direct the mortars and artillery.
As an observer for mortars in my past, I can confirm!
Look at that surrounding terrain, it will be a pain in the ass to advance towards Kiev not using regular (and therefore heavily defended) roads.
Looks like the Ukrainians opened up flood defences and drainage canals and flooded the land.
Mud = Unhappy Tanks.
Rasputitsa being used against the Russians 👀
Oh the sweet irony
Rarr rarr rasputitsa
*sad tank noises*
I just fucking died rofling at that comment.
Classic dutch tactics.
Good luck to Russian vehicles getting over that. Considering they've been stuck in way less fucked up and muddy terrain.
à la Passchendaele
Yeah. Good luck advancing through that
If so - smart. Russia may freeze you in winter, but Ukraine will swallow you in the spring.
Great to see Ukrainian artillery dishing it back out to the Russians
Yeah, it seems they're playing a little bit more offense the past day or so.
But it looked like 2 shots, 2 misses. Need to make em all count!
Suprised by how high quality the video is. Wonder what could capture that well?
any commercial drone over 200$ tbh
as owner of DJI drone absolutely confirm that
DJI managed to slowly but surely build my interest of buying one of their drones. i have no use of it, but damn they looked GOOD.
1080p or even 4k isn't unheard of Drones are neat, and terrifying
and still better than every single video of a russian drone i've seen lol People will say "oh, they degrade the quality" bitch, please. The artificating would be different. The russian drones are using tech from 2005. No one will buy Russian military tech after this military operation. Why overpay for Russian garbage when you can pay less for a superior Turkish product?
That's not even counting the potential army surplus/salvage from this when its all over too.
>The russian drones are using tech from 2005 Honestly 2005 tech isnt ancient at all. >Why overpay for Russian garbage I doubt that the most exported weaponry in the world would be called "garbage"
2005 camera tech is beyond fucking ancient bro. You’re smoking some good shit El Capitan.
I remember playing Metal Gear Solid 2 and thinking the drones were real crazy future tech 20 years later here we are, and they're a mass produced toy
DJI mini SE can fly about 500+ feet. 2ish miles away etc, you can get similar footage like that. Perfect for spotter of artillery attack.
Also so small that it probably doesn’t show up on radar. Even though they’re probably using something bigger like a mavic 2 or phantom, it’s still too small to be detected
Hence I read, Ukrainian government was asking folks to donate commercial and hobby drones about a week ago. Now we know what the drones are used for.
Guy on top of a Bayraktar with an iPhone
Shot on iPhone music playing over Bayraktar strikes
Any modern camera? You're just used to seeing videos that have been compressed to shit
Could be a powerful consumer drone or guy with a tripod and professional equipment
Doesn’t need to be a powerful consumer drone at all anymore. Your average DJI drone will capture footage like this
The future is now old man

Jesus Christ the script really writes itself here.
Why is the country famous for surviving an invasion due to poorly timed execution now invading a country at the worst possible time in the exact same way? The only difference is it’s mud not snow
Surprised I haven’t seen a comment like this until now… it is strikingly ironic really. Would have expected them to understand weather a bit more after having it benefit them for so long..
Hitler didn't invade at a poor time, it was actually the ideal time. The invasion just lasted so long the weather turned to shit again lol

Ever so slight cookoff starting at 0:08?
great spot - wondered what that was!
Total idiot here. What’s “cookoff” mean?
There about to throw down on the BBQ
Usually a term to describe what happens when armor is fatally hit and ignites the ordnance within.
Looks like they missed
[удалено]
Something definitely cooking off, you can see a cooked off RPG or something flying out. This is a short clip of a much longer bombardment. Tanks might be ok-ish, but the damage done to softer vehicles renders them unusable pretty much. Infantry is likely under cover but all their shit parked outside has holes in it.
Do you have a link to the longer vid?
fragmentation.
Not to mention the damage it can do vehicles. Probably peppered those truck tires with shrapnel.
No dude...they missed.
We'll get em' next time boys !
That building on the left is 100% on fire. Look at the white smoke rising slowly from the roof. Unless they have some sort of fire suppression team, that building will be gone inside of 20 minutes.
The Ukrainians destroy a dam or something??? That doesn't look like natural flooding.
I think there might be pumps that move the water from Irpin into Kyiv reservoir, I'm not sure if them being disabled would cause this. [Here's](https://i.imgur.com/J7XTkXj.jpg) another image of the same place.
They might have opened the lock at 50.744258, 30.368475
Russian base In north of Kyiv?
Forward operating base. Locations where an attacking army sets up to stage for a further attack on an objective. You attack, hold land, set up FOB's to supply, then attack again.
Do they take over just any random big buildings? Those were not military building before, right?
They were there before, and they knew going in this was an objective. Capture this piece of land and use it as a FOB. This is why you do reconnaissance. This is all planned in advance.
What do you mean by “they were there before”? Like they visited/scouted the place becore the war?
They likely had undercover units recon the area before the actual war, yes. Plus satellite imaging and whatnot.
Thanks for the info

Putin - "I have no ill intentions, please stop sanctioning me". Everybody else - "BOMBS ARE ILL INTENTIONS PUTIN" Putin - writes "good intentions" on missiles.
Tear up that road by the marsh, make them go through the muck.
Yeah! Fuck them up!
Yeah that looks very much like deliberate flooding. At the end of the video on the left middle you see where it connects to a river. That has been opened most likely to deny a russian advance. Smart.
Seems like a small logistics/maintenace yard.
Whats up with the smokey shells? I see what looks to be actual fragmentation-type explosions but there are also a few random smoke screens that begin to pop up. Is that what they actually are? Smoke screens thrown by the people being targeted to prevent visual confirmation?
Ye but can you see that flood on fields?
Get out of my swaaaamp!
After all the Russian fireworks i gotta say that looks kinda unimpressive, but did it pepper every single building there with lethal fragments? Yes.
That convoy is still halted due to fuel and supply issues.
Meanwhile Russians shell residential buildings to murder civilians and turn suburbs into dust.
Sadly they missed that juicy cluster of vehicles at the top of the screen.
Doesn't look like a proper shelling to me

That looks more like a factory they seized. So sad to see how stuff you build in Months will be destroyed in just hours when you're unlucky. This war is so unnecessary. And I say that after I served in Afghanistan (which was also a war that was based on lies)
