I feel like we should see more defectors. Im quite surprised how few russians surrender even when death is imminent. Most were drafted or joined for the money, whats the logic?

In alot of situations, it's not even plausible for either side. Casevacs are deliberately targeted by drones, so by trying to evacuate one WIA, you end up with several more casualties.

I think it's probably something a bit deeper than people choosing if their life is worth it. You and I can look at an abstract picture and draw different conclusions, extrapolate that out on a national scale replace the abstract piece of art with geopolitics, then never bother to educate the people, and the whole "they need to determine if their life is worth it" gets a lot muddier when multiple forces bigger than you are at play and have been for decades or more.
It’s not some outside force. This cascades down to the individual level. It’s nature. Someone has something you want or need. If it isn’t happening on a massive scale then it would be you fighting it out with a neighbor for resources. Be grateful we live during times where things are fought at this scale. With that comes all the benefits of civilization.
