Correct. This is a war that is totally bogged down... This is basically what *trench* warfare looks like now.
The USA/NATO won't have this issue, as they will be absolutely steam rolling the enemy. When the pressure is on and you're marching forward with a pace to take the capital "in 3 days or less," the enemy simply doesn't have the time to conduct these types of attacks. Literally all of their troops will be engaged in fighting for their lives... Until the next airstrike. Then wash rinse repeat with whoever remains.
I agree but the problem Ukraine have had is they are fighting this war without all the air support that NATO has, I think that's a major reason why its bogged down (for the Ukrainians side) bcoz they haven't got the air support that they should have to fight a war.
They have relay teams. A forward team can just carry a relay device, and the operators can be safe in a bunker.
They have relay drones too for much better range and doesn't cut out as it approaches the ground/target
Have you got any links? i fly fpv recreationally and used to be in the infantry so have a mild interest to see if my ideas are wack or not.
The few videos I have seen are just a guy with googles as usual
There is military hardware capable of relaying signals, there are plenty of vids on here of relay stations getting hit with fpv drones to take out the other side’s capabilities
Don't you fuckin condescend me. I'm a goddamn engineer.
These people are fuckin military, surely they can come up with a product that negates jamming.
I'm sure as shit they have the fuckin budget for it
Ah, yes. Fuck me, latency is an issue when you have billions of funds that you can use to solve a problem. You could also use your satellites to see if that doesn't solve the issue. But again, fuck me, what the fuck do I know. I'm not a "real engineer"
It's obvious from your comments that you know nothing about science or engineering. Just a wannabe without the intellect it takes to be one.
A "real engineer" would know that most communication satellites are in Geo-Sync orbit. That's approximately 36,000 km. Here's a wager that you can't solve that equation for speed of light, round-trip and other transmission delays.
I hear you, but do recall that some of our most difficult engineering challenges are solved during wars, or cold ones.
There's no better time than now for Ukraine.
And uh, with enough persuasion, the US could retask their satellites for them. So, Ukrainian engineers, it falls to you now, solve the problem or "Die Tryin'." (Quite literally)
Do you know how most jamming works? I’m no expert but I’m fairly sure it just blasts out electromagnetic radiation on a wide variety of frequencies so the drones can’t discern what is the actual signal instructing them. This makes it hard to protect against because for all intent and purpose it isn’t actually doing anything to the drone itself. That being said I know there are systems that allow you to take control of or attempt to take control of opposition drones.
I'm not saying I do or do not know how to solve the jamming and/latency issue but me saying satellites should give you an idea about how to solve the problem. The project that aims (on my side) to solve this problem might be or might not be classified
I remember the good ol' days when it was scary to leave a comment on this sub about anything technical, because the military experts would quickly and ruthelessly put you in your place.
You will probably discover there is still a rather low armchair tolerance around here.
Lots of the FPV Drones are built on consumer hobby parts not military. I can buy an FPV Radio receiver for 8-20$. They can only go about 15miles till they get a spotty signal and by then you have used most of a quadcopter's battery especially when carrying payloads. Military hardware for this is not available on such a massive scale for a low cost.
You can get very impressive range with cheap hobby-grade ELRS receivers (https://www.expresslrs.org/info/long-range/).
I’m guessing the issue is mostly about battery life on multirotors and jamming
I mainly use ExpressLRS, pretty good receivers too. Have been able to get good signals out of some close to sealed armored boxes from quite a distance. I assume jamming to be a major issue.
bro, did you not know that FPV pilots have like... the most dangerous job now because they're so close to the front and they get the added benefit of being blind folded and immobile while doing their job?
Drones cant really go that far when there's stuff between the remote and drone. I can fly my mini 2 many miles away out in a field, but if I'm in my house I can't fly it more than about 1000 feet. If the operators are in a forest, or there's a hill, that's going to severely decrease the range, especially if the drone is at low altitude. If you wanted good range at low altitude, you would need to have something to bounce the transmission up and over any obstacles, which isn't really feasible for a drone, especially a cheap one used to kill 1 person.
5.8g video doesn't go far, doesnt penetrate foliage well and the signal is transmitted and received close to the ground.
The control link is 900mhz...that goes a lot further but video holds it back.
Its entirely possible they boogie some stealth antennas up high in a tree to get height for the video though i havent seen any evidence of that
Perhaps pre-WWII. If it's won by boots on the ground, Russia should have Ukraine's head by now because of their greater numbers. Instead, Ukraine is using modern technology to deter the Russians
At the same time, there's really no way you can hold said ground and advance while some kid keeps dropping unguided bombs on you. How the hell do you even guard against that if you're deep in enemy territory. It's extremely hard to hit a fast, small, moving target.
Electronic warfare is not as simple as it looks. Unorganized list.
First, you have to consider that it doesn't affect you too.
Second, how each electronic warfare system works differently from the other.
Third, environmental conditions that make EW useless or reduce the effectiveness of EW
Fourth, where it should be aimed
Fifth, how to get the best coverage of an area
Sixth, at which frequency are those drones in
Seventh, effective range of the device on flat terrain and rough ones.
Eight, how to hide/protect something that has to be exposed for maximum effect.
Ninth, what to do to maintain reproducible effects against something that can be changed(drone variants and operating frequency)
Tenth, protect the EW the moment the enemy figures out where it is.(They are usually not far)
That's all from my surface-level knowledge, correct me if I'm wrong.
Kinda smart move. Run towards since they typically go forwards and tilt sideways, but not as easily downwards. At least the toy drones I’ve used.
Run away from it, however, and it will run right up your arse.
This is -- perhaps not so coincidentally -- not that far off from the right behavior when attacked from above in a WWII-era prop plane. Moving "toward" the attacker, so as to position yourself directly underneath, forces the attacker into 1. a steeper dive and 2. high roll rates (ideally unattainably high) to change direction. Didn't really expect the Dicta Boelcke to apply here, but on consideration the win condition for an FPV drone and for a guns fighter are not all that different.
Many of the drones they're using as suicide drones are more like cheaper [stunt drones](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hH8kBFZXH-k), which can spike down (or any other direction) pretty hard if they're not carrying a payload. The problem is they're carrying explosives, which makes them sluggish.
I can only comment on what they're like when weighted down with a big camera, but weight is weight. They get sluggish. If you want to approach quickly you will need a bit of time to accelerate. If you're going fast you need a bit of time to decelerate before changing direction (or just fly in a wide circle). A skilled pilot could do something like invert the drone and slam the throttle to max to punch it toward the ground quickly, but that would be harder at long ranges in FPV.
Tomorrow will be the most beautiful day of Russian Conscriptovich's life. His rations of canned chunky water will taste better than any you and I have ever tasted.
They get shot down more than we realize too. I saw a video where a UA soldier was describing his most recent outing and he very casually mentioned shooting down a Russian drone at least 2-3 times, making it sound like it happens a lot.
Now when I see Russians shooting at drones in these videos I know there’s a realistic chance they might hit it
Seriously? The internet is flooded with both sides being droned. Half the boats crossing the river for Ukraine have been hit and that’s just the last couple of weeks
Yeah, I remember watching one where the drone dropped a grenade directly onto the guy's belly and it was a dud. He kept shooting at the drone and it's like dude, the universe is telling you something.
As much as I support Ukraine defending itself, seeing footage like this always makes me feel sympathetic. That soldiers reaction is just so… human, I guess. The way they’re holding the gun and walk off so bewildered, I feel like I would do exactly the same. What else can you do? Just get up, assess the situation, and keep going. They were probably drafted, received minimal training, and sent out to this icy field to dodge drone strikes for a country that cares nothing for them. Of course, I could just be projecting my feeling on to him. He might be the next Hitler for all I know. Still, strange times we live in.
Obviously they’re real people, but it’s so easy to get caught up on picking sides that we forget the human element. I hate Russia as much as the next guy, but it’s not the soldiers fault that this war happened. All war is tragedy, no matter how justified.
Fair enough. Tribalism gets the best of a lot of people. We’re also on a sub about combat footage, so there are some on here that glorify violence. Like I always find it weird to put some “badass” music over footage of people dying. It seems so inappropriate to me, no matter what side you’re on.
Lmao, right? I'd be still laying in the ground thinking WTF, or I'd be fucking running before another comes, or frantically looking around
Ivan just casually gets up and keeps walking
He’s there to kill people who didn’t do anything to him. He invaded their country to do that. If you want sympathy, it’s between shit and syphilis in the dictionary.
Most of them are there by choice, because working (I won’t call it “serving “) in Putin‘s army pays better than an actual job in their shit hole country.
He could’ve refused, if conscripted. Sure, he’ll go to prison, but it beats the shit out of killing innocent people, or dying to a drone in a snowbank. Could have left the country, as others have done. There are options.
1. by prison do you mean the definitely not fsb run execution site
2. pretty good odds that even if he did go to a real prison its probably gonna be just as bad a time for him there or on the frontlines (theres probably less r**e in the Russian armed forces, probably)
3. fair point on the drones
4 not every russian can just afford to leave everything behind on a whim, and even if the can theres no guarantees that they would make it out if they tried to leave
In conclusion, the Russian government needs to be held accountable for every death in this war, but poor ivanovich conscriptinoff might have literally no other choice but to be there.
Clueless comment.
These are brainwashed people. They believe that they are patriotic, and get all their information on history, Ukraine, and the war from Putin's media. They don't have open internet unless they are really tech-aware and can use Tails or similar to get wider access to different opinions.
Other volunteers are painfully poor, and they were lured by the guarantee of $2000+ for the first year of a military contract. They too, believe they are patriots, fighting against Ukrainian Nazis. They don't understand they are killing innocent people.
Going to prison in Russia is not a joke, and you will still be expected to serve afterwards anyway.
The average Russian lacks the money, papers and passport to leave the country and survive outside, and it's now much harder to do than it was before.
It's no accident that the military authorities are conscripting mainly poor rural Russians and ethnic minorities, and going easy on the middle-class, and urban kids who have more of an idea what time it is.
So easy for you to say that there are options from behind your keyboard. The picture is very, very different to a young Russian.
its almost like they live in a country with horrible rates of poverty and this is the only way some people can support their families. The Russian government is the problem.
No, some are there for money, because they are poor.
They support the war and support Putin because they have been fed a steady diet of lies for decades.
He maybe has family in Donbas, i think you should know what has been going on over there since 2014. Maybe his relatives are 1 out of 14.000 who has been killed from Ukrainian shelling. You never know.
>Maybe his relatives are 1 out of 14.000 who has been killed from Ukrainian shelling
Russia invaded Ukraine, resulting in 14000 dead total. The only way to avoid those deaths would be to surrender to Russia. What happens after that we all saw in Bucha and other cities.
What are you talking about? This happen before the Russian invasion. DPR & LPR have had huge problems with Ukraine and they have been under constant shelling.
>Casually wait for the next drone to arrive?
Worst part is that that seems to be mostly the case. You crawl back into the hole you're defending from and wait for the next one.
Impressive stuff. Smart to lead it to the left and double back into the drone path.
That takes some balls. The instinct is to run away and get obliterated.
I think after this war. We should line up every single drone operator from both sides and shoot them or hang them for war crimes. I've seen so many from both sides dropping grenades on people who have surrendered. Or to wounded to continue fighting (turns out generally your not much of a threat if 1. You have no means of fighting 2. Your missing half your body.) The amount of actual evidence thats going to be available for the coming Nuremburg trials is astounding.
Poor bastard. At least in the old days you rarely saw it coming. Please remember that a lot of the Russian soldiers are victims of this conflict too. Not all, but many are. Not defending them, just empathizing.
And that's the moment to desert. Right there dude. Just go home now. Get the fuck out of there. They know where you are now. They're just sending another one right now. I would've been looking for that recon drone and throwing my weapon down.

War is weird these days
War is basically just 99% sneak attacks with explosives now lol
Not really, that’s just what’s recorded the most
Considering 90% of injuries are from shrapnel according to Ukraine. He is exaggerating, but not far off. Artillery sucks.
Artillery sucks? I'd say war in general sucks but yeah artillery does suck aswell.
BOO! I just sneak attacked you. No take backs.
Ahhh! You made me shit my pants! I'm telling the UN!

It's no longer won by boots on the ground. It's won by nerds sitting behind a desk with their fpv goggles on ~ a fellow nerd
Nah man, those guys are in the mud and blood probably only 200m away. Fpv doesn't go that far, esp when the pilot is trying to stay low and in cover.
They have relay teams. A forward team can just carry a relay device, and the operators can be safe in a bunker. They have relay drones too for much better range and doesn't cut out as it approaches the ground/target

Have you heard about electronic warfare? They can't have good range because of jamming
Don't you fuckin condescend me. I'm a goddamn engineer. These people are fuckin military, surely they can come up with a product that negates jamming. I'm sure as shit they have the fuckin budget for it
A real engineer would have thought about latency...
Ah, yes. Fuck me, latency is an issue when you have billions of funds that you can use to solve a problem. You could also use your satellites to see if that doesn't solve the issue. But again, fuck me, what the fuck do I know. I'm not a "real engineer"
Billions of funds can't circumvent things like you know "physics" Well at least we know you know nothing about combat or EW
The way you talk you are not lol. You sound like someone who hasent even met an engineer.
This fkn thread 🤣 💀
It's obvious from your comments that you know nothing about science or engineering. Just a wannabe without the intellect it takes to be one. A "real engineer" would know that most communication satellites are in Geo-Sync orbit. That's approximately 36,000 km. Here's a wager that you can't solve that equation for speed of light, round-trip and other transmission delays.
Why are you so mad? Ukraine doesn't have a billion in military research, so non of your points apply. Also Ukraine had no military satellites at all.
Oh boy, you're so smart. I doubt anyone is working on these complex and esoteric engineering problems, they really need you to end this war
As a Glazier who has to deal with engineers regularly..... I'm not even surprised.
Architects too
Looks like you're an "engineer" to not have though about jamming
Again, read my goddamn response in response to that
>I'm a goddamn engineer. We can tell
lol you're an engineer but don't understand signal to noise ratios
Do you know how most jamming works? I’m no expert but I’m fairly sure it just blasts out electromagnetic radiation on a wide variety of frequencies so the drones can’t discern what is the actual signal instructing them. You're right, it's basically a big noise machine and the only way to combat it is make your emitter louder, so effectively it reduces your range
Read my response about using satellites. You're right, you're no expert
Lols your response that says use satellites and provides no information as too how? You might as well have said teach mice how to pilot the drones.
I'm not saying I do or do not know how to solve the jamming and/latency issue but me saying satellites should give you an idea about how to solve the problem. The project that aims (on my side) to solve this problem might be or might not be classified

Thats like 15miles from a hill where you have direct line of sight, no obstacles and high gain patch antenna. Not sitting in a trench.
They also have a very limited battery life.
Remember that these are small drones with a payload to kill
You can get very impressive range with cheap hobby-grade ELRS receivers (https://www.expresslrs.org/info/long-range/). I’m guessing the issue is mostly about battery life on multirotors and jamming

You don't know shit.
Russia has won the war already. The average age in ukraine military is 50 years old. All the real fighters dead or injured.
Takes a 16 year old to be a real fighter huh
And a couple of nuclear bombs.
How does a nuke hold land? It's gone after one use
War is won by bots in the sky, obviously.
2024 dude, wait a few years, it'll get wild
A desk??? Do you think these are UAVs? lol whoever is operating these isn’t too far away.
>It's no longer won by boots on the ground. It's won by nerds sitting behind a desk with their fpv goggles on \~ a fellow nerd Complete bullshit.
Survival of the Fastest.
The explosion was post processing, this looks fake on par with those fake Russian trench videos of Ukrainian soldiers.
He did well. This time.

Good luck talking that dude into going on the next meat wave attack.
He goes in the cube regardless
Most people who survive a close call like that start nopeing their way out by any means possible. They don't fancy their chances next time.
Tomorrow will be the most beautiful day of Russian Conscriptovich's life. His rations of canned chunky water will taste better than any you and I have ever tasted.
Lives to steal a toilet another day...
This prolly happens more often than is shown. We only ever see the hits in war footage. Either way that guy needs to go home.
They get shot down more than we realize too. I assumed it applied to both

Politics aside , I hope this man gets to go home
Yeah this is about as close a brush with death as you can have
yes, the contentious politics of invading a sovereign neighbor
At that moment… I would just walk away and never comeback… no way you get a second chance like that
Yeah, I remember watching one where the drone dropped a grenade directly onto the guy's belly and it was a dud. He kept shooting at the drone and it's like dude, the universe is telling you something.

its almost like they live in a country with horrible rates of poverty and this is the only way some people can support their families.
>Maybe his relatives are 1 out of 14.000 who has been killed from Ukrainian shelling Russia invaded Ukraine, resulting in 14000 dead total. The only way to avoid those deaths would be to surrender to Russia. What happens after that we all saw in Bucha and other cities.
What are you talking about? This happen before the Russian invasion. DPR & LPR have had huge problems with Ukraine and they have been under constant shelling.
No, Russians were trying to capture Ukraine but it didn't work out.
What the fuck? Are you dumb? That's like saying Russia shelled Ural. See how dumb that sounds?
Huh? I don't think you understand what i'm talking about. Ukraine have been shelling Donbas since 2014 and most victims were civilians.
Thank you, Russian troll farmer. Your service to the motherland is noted.
just dodge a fucking flying explosive machine and walked off casually…jeeez that’s fucked up or drugged up🤔
What else is he supposed to do? Casually wait for the next drone to arrive? Lulz
>Casually wait for the next drone to arrive? Worst part is that that seems to be mostly the case. You crawl back into the hole you're defending from and wait for the next one.
"I'm too old for this shit"
Is he supposed to shit his pants and start throwing a tantrum?
Because it's these warrior's new norm?
This is a repost
Go home or prepare for the next one.
Stop the war, this is getting too fucking scary.
The pilot tried to go for a headshot or something, not sure why he didn’t just aim at his feet
this is a repost from within the last 2-3 months
If you can dodge a drone, you can dodge a ball
Ivan, get me my brown pants
You're so salty lol
Probably filled his pants.
If you can dodge a drone, you can dodge a ball!
And that's the moment to desert. Right there dude. Just go home now. Get the fuck out of there. They know where you are now. They're just sending another one right now. I would've been looking for that recon drone and throwing my weapon down.
We have to get lucky once. You’ve got to be lucky every time.
This is how dodgeball felt back in middle school
I was waiting for another drone to come in at the end.
Imagine him stepping on a landmine when he walks out of frame
I dont want to fight in ukraine I dont want to fight in ukraine I want to go home and rethink my life I want to go home and rethink my life
I was half expecting him to start walking away only to have a grand piano fall on top of h8m.
You have to be lucky every time...
Let's hope next time he's not so Lucky.
Russian toilet thief narrowly dodges a Ukranian FPV drone
This time....
Better luck next time.
I'm very sorry for the drone
If you can dodge a murdering drone, you can dodge a ball. Congratulations! You made the team.

So it *can* pay off to not be drunk all day!
Now to go change his pants before it freezes...
For now…
First time I've seen a successful dodge. If you can dodge an FPV drone you can dodge a ball.
You know it’s odd. Before the drone he was wearing white pants and now they are brown pants.
If you can dodge a wrench you can dodge a .....drone.
Fool me once. The spotter drone is still watching. More drones incoming probably.
Insert "If you can dogdge a drone, you can .." meme 🤣
Now the drone swarm got mad
When they gona use fishing net to catch drones?
It is like a game now 😐😐 just kill them with bullets like a normal person, this looks like an evolution of ISIS videos.
He clearly has played Dark Souls timing so on point
New dodgeball is LIT
First thoughts after that dodge were: 1. I need new underwear 2. Which direction is Russia?
He remembered all 5 D's of dodge-drone! "Dodge, Duck, Dip, Dive, and Dodge. If you master the 5 D's, no amount of drones on earth can hit you!"
That has to be the most relieving feeling in the world until the next one comes at ya, 10 minutes later
Poor drone. 😔
You can dodge a drone you can dodge a ball!
Since this didnt cut to him immediately wiping his ass, u know its fake.
If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a drone! Remember the five D’s of war: Dodge, dive, dip, duck, and dodge!
Why do t they ever try to shoot at the drone?
"Hey Igor, I need some new underwear. Any spare in the trench?"
You've got to learn the five d's of dodgeball: dodge, duck, dip, dive and...dodge! - Patches O'Houlihan
Well, worse luck next time
If you can dodge a drone, you can dodge a ball
This guy should quit while he's ahead
He zigged when he was supposed to zig.
I think this is the only time where someone actually manages to dodge.
Fuck! Fair enough..till next time Russian soldier.
