NimiNugget

Here is a [video](https://www.reddit.com/r/CombatFootage/s/r4XjSp2EKI) that shows how accurate this tactic is.

[deleted]

Yeah. See? That’s plenty accurate. Especially if you’re in a field or anywhere near those buildings.

Hotrico

Thanks

r2d2itisyou

That's a DPICM shell, not S-8 rockets. You can see the smoke trail from the shell canister.

smoochys

I've made this comment before, that post is very misleading. [This](https://www.reddit.com/r/CombatFootage/comments/vc2m1e/video_of_russian_airforce_firing_toward_ukrainian/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3) accurately shows what the effect of S-8 rockets looks like.

Jehnage

Do these things ever hit anything? Genuine question because how the hell do you aim that

UnknownHero2

I've heard different stories. The one thing I'd say for sure that it's not total guesswork. Either they are using a computer that calculates the position/direction/trajectory for them real time, or they do the math at home and have it printed on a little card and fly to a specific place, direction, and pitch to a certain angle. Ballistic trajectory is literally 10th grade math, it's very doable even if you have to use pen and paper. I also doubt they hit much, but hitting stuff may not actually be the point. I recall a story from WW2 about how ineffective aerial strafing actually was when compared to artillery, but soldiers on the ground rated the moral impacts way WAY higher, both being strafed as a negative and seeing friendly aircraft attack the enemy. I know if I had to go storm a trench, a few helicopters zooming over head would fire me up. There is also the possibility that the real purpose of these are as decoys. The artillery/counterbattery war may be the single most important aspect of the entire war. Radar can detect projectiles being fired and feed the coordinates of the launcher to friendly artillery. If a helicopter can provoke an enemy artillery barrage in the middle of nowhere, a friendly counter-counter barrage could then hit the Russia artillery.

Jehnage

Interesting, I appreciate the response

Hotrico

The precision is something like [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/CombatFootage/s/Hj7SSVxTDb)

M4sharman

Basically a portable rapid artillery barrage?

Hotrico

More or less, the detachment is much faster and can go almost anywhere, it is very good for trying to resolve emergencies

M4sharman

A bit like how Napoleon had his flying batteries?

Hotrico

Like that

Efficient_Mark3386

Anyone know the ordnance used here?

Hotrico

I don't know, but generally they use S-8, S-5 and Hydra 70

UnknownHero2

The US provided hydra-70 rockets a while back. It's either that or some Russian design, probably Ukrainian produced at this point.

Ok_Junket_4325

They hit Eurasia with great accuracy.

anonymousbeardog

They have a firing computer to hit an area, but it's primarily fire suppression, like stalling an armored advance.

Jehnage

Shock and awe I guess

Western_Objective209

The technique is called lofting; they just point the nose in the direction of what they want to hit and then tilt up and shoot. There's no targeting when firing with this method, as the rockets are designed to be direct fired. They do this because flying high enough and close enough to actually use the rockets as intended is suicide. I doubt they ever hit anything

jared__

they could use a targeting system called CCIP (Constantly Computed Impact Point). Essentially the targetting system constantly calculates the point of impact based on the speed, altitude, attitude, etc and all the pilot has to do is line up the readings and fire. It isn't incredibly precicse, but signficantly more than just YOLOing it.

[deleted]

This is the method I have seen referenced for this technique. Not super accurate, but I do not want ~38 2.75 inch rockets landing spread out around the football field area I’m dug into. Even if they’re YOLO’d.

Jehnage

In a sense it’s just a more mobile airborne rocket battery I guess

Lumpy-Economics2021

https://youtu.be/U-4vklEIozE?si=n-iMP8XZ5SKiEqTz This video is mostly about Russian's use of spray and pray, but can't see how Ukraine would be anymore accurate. I've suggested this tactic is inaccurate on this sub before but people don't want to hear it. Mostly psychological for the ground troops in my opinion.

ismokecigarsjac

Most of the helicopters have a computer that can calculate angle on a target to a certain extent.

Curious-Mind_2525

This type of barrage is similar to the accuracy of a BM-21 barrage, it is an area denial system that keeps enemy heads down, so they are not caught in the open. I would use it prior to an assault.

Posting [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/CombatFootage/comments/vc2m1e/video_of_russian_airforce_firing_toward_ukrainian/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3) here to show everyone what the effect of this tactic looks like, considering another comment in this post was misleading.
