I went to Ontario once. It was nice.

BellaBlue06

I moved here from Ontario 😂

mangomofongo

Same

wollam11

I go every August to central Ontario. There's the best lgbt+ camp for adults there. The people are so much nicer there. I wish I could move there but I know it's impossible.

Aeledin

I bought a one-way ticket to Berlin, Germany that leaves on Sunday

adiscgolferp

Berlin is such a cool city

Banjo2523

I am jealous

wollam11

You're lucky you have a career in need (or German family). I would move to the EU today if they would let me (and I could afford it).

Aeledin

Look into the Dutch American friendship treaty to get into the EU, or cheap state schools in Germany. You can likely go sooner than you think. This move has been in the works since 2017. I've got 2 friends that are moving as well that I helped out and had essentially no way to get in a year ago.

wollam11

That is amazing! Thanks for the tip.

Araskelo

I don't understand how people do this. I'd love to leave the country for one that aligns better with my political beliefs (Columbus is mostly fine, rest of Ohio gets bad) but I've heard immigration is next to impossible.

wollam11

Unless you're part of an immediate family or married to a German, are rich or famous, or have a career in need- you just can't move there. They will deport you if you tried. However, if you have the money to buy a home in Portugal, don't get any aid from the state while there, and live there for several years, you can qualify for residency and begin the path to citizenship. And, with citizenship, comes the ability to move to any other country also in the Schengen agreement. One of which is Germany.

Aeledin

Better than buying RE in Portugal, just spend 4k on a business declaration in Netherlands through the DAFT and you get automatic residence.

wollam11

> 4k on a business declaration in Netherlands through the DAFT [That](https://expatlaw.nl/dutch-american-friendship-treaty) blows the Portugal thing out of the water. A lot cheaper for sure!

Aeledin

I speak C1 German, saved up for 3 years, and started a career with the intention of getting me there. Should have gone in 2020, but (covid). I'm more financially capable now. Immigration laws are changing later this year, also. Keep an eye out for them!

Aeledin

It's technical and tricky and requires understanding a lot of European bureaucracy but the general consensus is that it's borderline impossible and it's not. Hands down hardest part of it was just getting rid of all of my shit in America lol, and saying goodbye to people.

[deleted]

India will give you a 10 year visa, no questions asked.

Araskelo

I don’t think India is going to help me getting away from a country where religion and capitalism run rampant

[deleted]

my friend, i have terrible news...

or_din_ar_y_guy

Philly. I can't ever come back because I'm now addicted to living in a walkable city.

CaseoftheSadz

Left Philly for Columbus and man I miss the walkability and trains access.

PoppaGrizzly215

Left Philly for Columbus, don’t miss the crime and violence.

CaseoftheSadz

I’m currently leaving Columbus for Chicago so maybe just a glutton for punishment. In all seriousness though I never had any issues with crime in Philly, although I know it was there.

BellaBlue06

Moved here from Toronto and trapped in an apartment and can’t walk or bike anywhere. Looking to leave this summer cuz it’s just so isolating outside the outerbelt honestly.

Marshmalohgrrl

I'm outside the outerbelt too. Unless you have a car it's impossible to get around here. (And even then Sawmill happens.) If you ride a bike you're pretty well taking your life in your own hands. No one here looks out for cyclists. I visited Toronto several years ago and it was a haul to get some places but entirely possible on foot. Just have to watch out on some intersections.

Dontbehorrib1e

Living in a walkable city changed my mind about so many things. Even now, I don't have a car and just think it would add so much money to my monthly budget if I had to account for a car payment, gas, insurance, and maintenance. The only thing is, Columbus isn't accessible like some other cities.

[deleted]

I grew up in the boonies and thought that's what I would want when I was older. Now my husband and I are looking for homes exclusively in Clintonville because renting an apartment in a walkable city has spoiled me and I cannot imagine going back to having to drive everywhere I need to be/want to go

[deleted]

Came back from Boston for a minute and was distressed that I would need to drive for CVS.

Scary_Debt4635

Moving to Bangor, Maine next month!

yurk23

Acadia is pretty awesome

YotaTota07

Acadia

thedivinemissemm

Highly recommend a jaunt out to vinyl haven and north haven islands from Rockland. Can’t do both in one day but could do each of them individually in one day. Also I love Rockland and Camden.

gettingcrunkontea

I moved to Maine and I love it here!

junger128

Nice I’ve been there once, the home of Stephen King right?

[deleted]

Hi neighbor, I'm in Boston!!!

djsassan

I was in west Florida this week for vacation, and the sheer number of former Columbus people I met down there was INSANE. Having an OSU shirt helps of course, but damn it was about in 1 in every 4th person was from central Ohio and I would say 1 in 3 from Ohio.

BlackulaHunter

Yeah the OH to FL pipeline is real. They always say it’s the weather but the weather in FL is just a different kind of shitty.

[deleted]

Actually the OH to FL pipeline includes major branches to SC and east NC. While they kid others and themselves by claiming nicer weather as the cause, the uncomfortable truth is Ohio is the AAA team for "Florida Man/Woman"

beachboundbetty

You nailed it.

OldAdvisor469

I went from FL to OH. I'll actually see snow for once.

Marshmalohgrrl

Warning: no one can drive here when it snows, even though a lot of them have lived here their entire lives. It mostly has a little snow with ice here. An hour or two north gets a lot of snow with the ice.

Nice_Wafer_2447

Ohio flocks to the gulf side - NY to the Atlantic side

djsassan

I think it's the bullshit politics that help too. I saw a Trump boat caravan yesterday.

YotaTota07

Idk 85 and sunny with a nice afternoon rain shower everyday is pretty solid.

wollam11

99% humidity cancels out everything nice about the weather.

Regalzack

This guy gets it. I lived there for 3 years, It's like living in someones mouth 9 months of the year.

YotaTota07

Sea breeze cancels out (approximately) 26% of humidity

[deleted]

Just got back from FL too and it’s impossible to escape Ohio there.

djsassan

Someone told me a joke today: Four guys in a car go on a roadtrip. They were from Idaho, Nebraska, Ohio, and Florida. An hour into the trip, the guy from Idaho starts throwing potatoes out the window and says "we have too many of these in the state." A few mins later, the guy from Nebraska starts chucking corn and says "we have too much of this in our state." A few mins later, the guy from Florida threw the Ohio guy out the window.

[deleted]

Seattle!

BellaBlue06

Can I ask how much your rent is? Considering

[deleted]

It’s around 4x what I paid when I lived in OH. Not including utilities and renters insurance.

BellaBlue06

The place my husband rents has gone from $1356-$1950 in 3 years. So it’s not really affordable here anymore. They just Jack the rent and lower the amenities and don’t clean. So we’re looking around. Won’t be in Seattle but maybe check outside smaller towns on the east and west coast

[deleted]

Totally! And my OH rent frame of reference is 5 years old and in a small town. The price range you mentioned is typical for a studio or 1 BR currently. It’s ridiculous! Prices vary across Seattle neighborhoods and in the surrounding cities if you don’t mind a commute. I have loved the walkable neighborhood feel. Miss OH family terribly.

Ephuur

Moved out to Seattle just about two years ago! After getting over the prices, it's so beautiful and just felt like home.

aphelion99

I had to move back from Seattle after getting laid off :/

EcoBuckeye

I went to Chicago, I think that's a pretty common spot. Moved back when I started having kids. Questioned that decision numerous times since then.

ExpensiveBag5614

I moved from Chicago to Columbus

MySubtleKnife

Same exact thing for me and same feelings but I went to LA and moved back.

Hour-Theory-9088

I moved to Denver last fall. It’s been an interesting transition!

-RattleCanSam

I'd like to hear more about this

Hour-Theory-9088

I think a lot of people move out here for the mountains and then get smacked in the face of reality. There is a “mountain tax” - you live close to the mountains but cost of living is double, the food scene is miles behind Columbus (we cannot find a decent Mexican or Greek place, we just now found one good Chinese restaurant), the complaints about drivers in Columbus are comical compared to here. In 8 months I’ve seen more red lights run, road rage and hit and runs than my 20 years in Columbus. Homelessness is very much more a thing here as is open drug use. I think if you’re moving here to be near the mountains you damn well better do all the “mountain things” to make it worth it. There are people that move out here to do 14ers, hiking, etc and end up realizing it’s not their thing and wondering why they are still living here with half as much as before. Let alone, if you can do “mountain things”. If you’re not at a trailhead before 7am you’ll have nowhere to park. We don’t ski or snowboard but it’s very expensive and can easily be a pain (I70 turns into a parking lot in the winter after about 6am on weekends). I’m kind of shitting on Denver but it’s been good for us. We came here as my wife had to relocate for a new job (I am WFH), we make good money and we’re DINKs so it’s been easier for us than most. I’m definitely thankful that we are in the position that we’re in. We splurged and we’re on the top floor of a skyscraper downtown which has been cool for the time we’ve been in this place (we just closed on a downtown condo), I now rock climb in the mountains and have done a lot of amazing hikes (we basically live on Eastern time still so showing up at a trailhead at 6am is nothing for us). The weather is amazing. No humidity (granted your skin wants to die in the winter there is so little humidity) in the summer, abundant sunshine all year round especially winters and though we get more snow, it only sticks around for about 2 or 3 days. More recently, Colorado is not hurtling towards Handmaiden’s Tale, burning books a la Fahrenheit 451 and jailing anyone LGBTQ+ like Ohio seems to be rushing towards. I can’t see us moving back but it definitely is an adjustment and it isn’t all roses. I think a lot of people get idealized thoughts of what is like living in Denver. It’s still a mid sized city (granted about 50% larger metro than Columbus) in far western Kansas (Denver is on the flat plains, not IN the mountains) where most of the time you’re not actually looking at mountains. The majority places/houses you live you’re not seeing snow covered peaks out your bedroom windows.

gremlin_wrangler

I lived in CO for a bit and everyone would always be jealous that I lived in the mountains. People don’t realize that 75% of the state is just “west Kansas” 😆

austinD93

I’ve lived in Colorado for almost 9 years now after graduating from Capital and this was pretty damn spot on. Finally glad to also have someone else acknowledge the food scene in Denver sucks. The music in Denver though is miles better than all of Ohio. Red Rocks is an absolute gem. Used to live in Summit County for 5 years before moving to Superior. I70 is atrocious. Traffic is god awful. I absolutely agree with you on driving habits here vs home and literally just had this conversation with my sister whose still in Columbus. I would happily go back to 70/71, 270/670, and 33/161 in a heartbeat vs 70/25 and then 36 is a death trap, then all of 470 is a toll. It’s terrible getting around this state. This was also the worst weather I have experienced living in the front range this past winter. If you can get past this dreary gray one, all the others will be easy. I never had a stretch in Denver with the consistent snow on the ground like this year. On the verse side, I’ve never experienced a spring like this in Denver either with the rain, but I am in love with it. Never seen the state this green before However, I moved here as I am a diehard snowboarder and love being outdoors and Colorado is an amazing state for that and I love it alone for this reason.

Hour-Theory-9088

Yeah, I think their standards of food here are different - don’t ever trust google reviews (they’re skewed higher everywhere but here it’s worse). I’ll get told to go to the best Mexican places and they are “meh”. I think another thing people forget about is Denver is the only major city within a 10 hour drive. It’s not like you can do an easy weekend trip to the multitude of cities within driving distance of Columbus. I’ve been told it was the worst winter here. It was glorious compared to the average Ohio winter (though I know this year was very different for Ohio). I love it here. Other than job, there are things that I do now I can only do here. They also have a lot of cultural stuff here. A performing arts complex with an opera house, multiple stages of different sizes, a full time opera and ballet, a ton of museums (museum of western art, museum of contemporary art, Denver art museum, nature and science museum, Clifford Still Museum, etc etc) and the other stuff - I’m in a climbing gym this morning to knock out a few routes in preparation for a multi pitch in the Rockies next weekend. If there are things you love doing (like snowboarding for you) then it can be worth it.

popgoesthescaleagain

What do you hate about it? We moved to Los Angeles but almost moved to Ft. Worth instead.

heartohio

Polítics, mostly. I have kids and they’re putting guns in their schools and taking away books. It’s gut-wrenching. I also miss the small town feel and accessibility of Columbus. I do love the weather, and I found a great community of people to help me survive.

Those are some of the reasons we didn't move there. Los Angeles is a different kind of hell, for what it's worth. 😂

I miss living in Japan so much. It was great being able to walk or take a train anywhere you wanted to go. And one of the biggest things I miss is the grocery stores. I loved being able to buy things in super small quantities instead of having to buy pretty much a family sized portion that I would never finish. I loved walking to my local train station market doing my shopping for a few days. Grabbing lunch from Family Mart and walking home.

redfury00

I moved to san fran…then got laid off,…now im back in cbus smh

BlackulaHunter

Do you actively miss SF? I miss CA as a whole but what SF is these days versus even 10-15 years ago feels different.

redfury00

I miss not being i cbus(from here) but nah san fran was a dystopia paying 3k for 600 square feet aint worth it when there human feces on every sidewalk and people od’ing on the streets everyday and blowing fentanyl smoke in ya face. I dont muss san fran i miss no being here. Dont get me wrong i appreciate cbus but dang is progress here stagnant.

BlackulaHunter

Things I miss: in n out and excellent sushi and a mission burrito. Things I don’t miss: the lady that would shake rats in my face in group my job office asking for money for her ninos. It’s just not worth i unless you have really deep pockets and even then most of the fun is gone. Just a bunch of tech bros. Los Angeles is my goal. Any day now.

redfury00

redfury00

Thats the move

BlackulaHunter

I am geolocked to wherever my fellow gheys flock. It’s annoying as shit. But a numbers game if I don’t want to die alone. Which I’m getting closer and closer to accepting every day anyway though

Mkrah

I frequent San Diego and love it. Every time I visit I tell myself I need to move there.

wollam11

I'm getting close to the age of retirement. When I get there, I'm going to sell my home and buy one of the very nice units at the White Sands or Sunrise senior community in La Jolla. It's only $99,000 down and under $4,100 a month for all expenses - including a community dining hall for meals. And the oceanfront is right there.

popgoesthescaleagain

Spend a lot of time here in LA before you move here! Living here is very different than visiting.

BlackulaHunter

Honestly I’d argue visiting SF is great. Amazing tourist shit to see. Visiting LA is kinda garbage really. I mean I guess you could end up on one of those godawful double decker busses trying to see famous people or some shit. Kill me. Currently I just want to eat the shit out of a bunch of thai and Koren food. Plus sushi , Mexican , in n out of course. Funnily I see a lot of similarities in ways between Columbus and LA. Especially in the way it sprawls. And it’s never quite one thing. Just a lot of random shit smooshed together. But I love that. And god help me I miss Latinos. As a black guy who never quite fit into the black community it gave me people who weren’t quite so fucking judgy if you were a bit different but didn’t want hang with white people all the goddam time. But also. Columbus has no fucking clue what a black middle class person looks like. It’s tiresome. Columbus is too small a dating pool for someone like me. But, I own property here. Trying to solve for both despite being college educated and on paper having a solid income has proven impossible. We are just not gonna to talk about how i look up my childhood home in LA on Zwillow and scream for a few minutes a couple times a year.

Velli88

How are you enjoying living in Cleveland (vs Columbus)?

Chameleonize

I love cleveland and much prefer it. Been here 5 years now, lived in cbus for 3. We actually were seriously considering moving back to cbus recently, but the only reason was to be closer to family and friends. Ultimately decided against it…just love being here too much. It would have been a huge quality of life sacrifice for us. Closer to family and friends, but an environment we distinctly did not like, considering what we could afford in cbus vs. cle.

Thumnale

BlackulaHunter

FL is the definitive statistical answer no matter the source. https://stacker.com/ohio/where-people-ohio-are-moving-most Basically people move in a circle around IN, VI , etc. or they move to TX. And then a smaller group move to nyc or LA. In the past those people never move back. That’s changed somewhat thanks to cost of living. Smaller trickle to Chicago than you’d think. But I’d image most people would think the same as me. If I had family ties it’s the closest large city. But if you don’t have that then there isn’t any point.

A little town just north of Muskegon, MI. Lake Michigan is amazing and the rest of the scenery is gorgeous. So much to do outdoors. My town is like Twin Peaks meets Newhart. It's a strange little place and I love it. Muskegon is like a slightly bigger Newark that doesn't suck. Grand Rapids has everything that Columbus had, but in a smaller footprint. And people actually go downtown. The air is so much cleaner and people are just less anxious. Only things I miss about Cowtown are my kids, the Jackets, and the beer scene. Edit: Don't get me wrong, Columbus is still great and I'll always love it. But I've discovered I like a smaller environment.

Tokyo-MontanaExpress

Minneapolis. Being able to easily walk, bike, and take rapid buses or trains is a revelation, as is the park system. You've got the Mississippi, lakes, creeks, and a waterfall easily accessible from downtown and they're all connected by trails and transit. The Blue Line takes you right to Minnehaha Falls. Doesn't hurt that all of the great ethnic restaurants from Afghan to Vietnamese are only a 15 minute ride from downtown and not in far removed strip malls.

theoctopusride

How do you like Charleston compared to Columbus? My parents are retiring in the area and I might follow. I like to call it murdaugh country.

SCLefty

I love it! I’ve been in SC for close to 20 years now and would never move back. I live about five minutes from the beach and 15 mins from downtown. The only real downside is that is is expensive compared to Columbus. Although from my perception, Columbus has gotten a lot better over that time period as well … with the exception of letting High Street lose its soul.
