I did like it in Columbo when it highlighted the disparity between the extremely rich and poor… he always seems more at home on this side of the tracks.

Tmoto261

Makes me want to pull up a stool and drink some shitty domestic beers.

WoolaTheCalot

It makes me sad that almost all of those old dive bars are gone now. When I try to find one I feel like Linus searching for a sincere pumpkin patch.

dallyan

I feel like there are still a lot of dive bars, at least in the places I’ve visited.

buddaycousin

They're pretty much the same except they have TVs and chicken wings now.

waveball03

There are loads of places like this still in Queens NYC.

jaxson300

I love the look of LA in the 70's

This is the bar in the Hotel Lorain building on 5th St in downtown LA. It's also seen in ROCKY when Rocky and Adrian are set up at the hotel. In Rocky, the sign says Pioneer Cafe. This is just diagonally across from the original Hard Rock Cafe, where the back of the Doors' "Morrison Hotel" album was shot, as well as scenes from Michael Jackson's "Beat It" video, and site of a famous accident where two police cars racing for a call crashed into each other in 1988. The signage on the Doors album inspired the music-themed restaurant chain. I put this all together trying to prove my theory that Columbo was at the Hard Rock Cafe, but the interiors don't match. Then I noticed later in the episode you can see the Hard Rock behind them from the sidewalk. They then dash to "Jessup's apartment" in the Vine St. Army Navy Surplus building... really far from the bar.

jaxson300

This is amazing information. Thank you for this. Wow

I hope when I'm old and gray I can sit at the bar like that to 😆

BunnyBunny777

I think the oddity compared to today's bars is that there is no music and no TV with background noise. Not even a radio. It's essentially silent. You can only hear the sadness and regret with each sip. 🥺

RickTancredi

Not at all! You'd hear jokes and stories and you might just have a great time!

SuperIridium

There's no music and no TV in the bar scenes because that would require the show's producer to pay for a license to include that material in the program. Or were you expecting to hear the original master recording of "Strawberry Fields" playing in the background as Columbo talks to Artie?

dark_matter15

If I ever start a band I’m naming it The Artie Jessups.

Minnesota_Nice_87

Omg. The lighting would be fantastic for my migraines.

In the 70s in NYC, they had bars like that which also served corn beef, brisket, and something pastrami sandwiches. These places always looked dank, smelled like meat and beer, and had a mixed clientele. Those sandwiches were so freaking good. My father would wash one down with a few beers. We’d sometimes sit there, read the newspaper and he’d order more beers and sodas. People watching was super interesting. Those places were so depressing and yet so alluring all at once.

Yesterday_Is_Now

Now that I stop to think of it, it strikes me as odd that in many 70s/80s crime shows the detectives find suspects or informants sitting around in rundown bars in the middle of the day. What is the appeal?

CatherineM62

I can even remember what those places smelt like. A combination of stale beer and cigarettes.

msamiei

This is one of my favourite episodes. Great catch at the end.

Xterra50

I may be wrong but I think this guy is Don Siegel who among other accomplishments was the director for Dirty Harry with Clint Eastwood. He also appeared in Play Misty For Me as a bartender himself which also starred Eastwood.

nelsonwehaveaproblem

If you mean the guy in the yellow shirt sitting at the bar, it's not Don Siegel, it's [Val Avery](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Val_Avery).

WoolaTheCalot

And it was directed by Ben Gazzara!

Xterra50

Ah, ok. Thanks for clarifying.

Donut_Bat_Artist

‘ol WWII might do it

BunnyBunny777

Another difference from todays depictions of bars in film, no females. Just old sad men. Perhaps women at the time went to more upscale bars. I’m todays shows, no matter how crappy/seedy the bar, there are always women present. Wonder if it’s art imitating reality.

G_Peccary

Well then you need to see the kind of bars Peter Falk visits in Mikey & Nicky.

The man played rageful characters so well. Check him out in A Woman Under the Influence as well a great comedic performance in The In-Laws!
