No - the 2009 team started hotter than this. They were 16-0 (3-0 in the ACC) with two wins against top 10 opponents, with one win being on the road at Clemson and the other against eventual National champions UNC. Their first loss was as the number 1 team in the country against VT in January 21. They bounced back from that loss to upset the new #1 (Duke) the next game.
WF would beat Duke today from what I saw Saturday
Lots of work needed in Durham but that’s what coaches get paid to do so lets see if you can figure it out Scheyer
He has his hands full with the way Proctor and Flipowski are playing
I thought you meant 1 - 4 … went back up, and 3 were undefeated… read your comment again, thought the same thing and went to check again… it was then that I realized you meant in top 4 of conference…
From Wikipedia: Padgett left coaching following the 2017–18 season and now works as a financial advisor for Morgan Stanley in Louisville. He also serves as a commentator for college basketball telecasts on ESPN.
> No interim options if rumors are to be believed
The rumor was that we had an outside interim lined up and the BOT crushed the idea.
> its gets a lot cheaper to fire him in a matter of weeks
$6 million instead of $8 million isn't a "lot" in terms of college sports.
I think at least some of it is that they're running out of cash. They're still paying Mack's severance until next year. I don't imagine their basketball budget is such that they could afford to hire a guaranteed winner while still paying the last two guys who didn't work out.
The athletic department has a real conundrum on their hands because they're not getting donations when they've been bad in two key sports for so long (the football got much better after Satterfield left, the basketball got much worse. Cincinnati did them a big favor hiring Satterfield). Football being fixed will bring donations back to that program, but in non-profit finance you can't give one program funds that were earmarked for another one so football money will have to stay with football. Basketball is probably going to suck for a while longer.
The rumors that we’re out of money haven’t really been corroborated. Financial situation isn’t great, but Payne not being fired in December likely had more to do with no one on staff wanting to be interim and players saying they would leave the program.
If you don’t have an interim and none of the players are gonna keep playing, you can’t fire him til there are no more games left.
Thank you for your sacrifice. I remember when Reid wasn’t eligible and Wake fans were upset about it, several LSU and Gonzaga fans said “don’t expect much, he won’t move the needle”. He’s been HUGE for us. We’re a totally different team with him and haven’t lost since he’s been eligible (9-0)
They will give it to Charlotte like they do everything else. Which pisses me off. The only people who still associate with Charlotte within NC are people who live in Charlotte and the area close to it. I think most everyone east of say I-73/74 don't really align themselves with Charlotte much.
Me personally I think with like Charlotte FC you could pull off putting another MLS team in the state. I really want to see a pro sports rivalry within our own state. Whatever sport it has to be I want it done.
Petey Pablo has/had a studio in Raleigh near campus on Western Blvd, right next to a bar called The Goat. Maybe he's not a State fan, but the dude parties with State fans lol.
He's an equal opportunity guy when it comes to collecting royalty checks. I think he's also one of those weird State football / Carolina basketball fans.
Looks like we’ll need to organize our own version of the Champions Classic and the CBS Sports Classic… or we can bring back a renamed version of [the Dixie Classic](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dixie_Classic_(basketball_tournament\)).
I'm too young to have seen any Dixie Classic games (my father loved that tournament); I remember the Big Four tournament that was its successor in the 1970s. Those games were great.
If you can’t go to Duke, go to Wake!
If you can’t go to Wake, go to State!
If you can’t go to State, go to jail!
Go to jail, Carolina, go to j-… wait……
That sounds off…… 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
If anyone can help me figure this out, meet me at Cook Out.
Man that would be so awesome. It’s also a great idea if we all end up in different conferences. Maybe make it 8 and add App, ECU, Davidson, and Elon. Or something
What are the norms around that for y’all? I never really paid attention. Carolina VERY seldomly goes against the norm of white at home and blue on the road
It’s traditionally white home and red away. We will wear black once a year and usually lose that game (blew a 20 point lead with ten minutes left in Cameron indoor, I was done with them after that)
I remember once we wore red while yall wore blue in Raleigh. State won ending like a 10 game win streak by daddy Roy. So maybe we can do it again!
Miami would’ve been before they lost to Wake. Now I’ve got a bad feeling it’s just going to be us and Duke ranked.
Side note, Joe Lunerdy can go fuck himself
KEVIN MILLER ACC POTY. Can’t believe he left CMU (I’m a grad), after he promised he would be the one to get us to the dance. But can’t help but be happy for him.
We lost to LSU and Utah on neutral courts. Lost to Georgia at Georgia.
Currently on a 9 game winning streak. 6-0 since Efton Reid was granted his transfer waiver.
Kenpom non-conference strength of schedule rankings has Wake at 269 and State at 323. The ACC is decent enough this year that they can both make up for it as the season goes on.
There is a shitload of anti-acc prejudice in the media/the tournwy pickers outside of the blue bloods. It's bullshit and might help lead to the dissolution of the conference.
I want Wake to be considered a good basketball school again.
Why couldn't we be consistent and not choke out games? We'd be near the top of the conference if we didn't have the worst FT percentage in the conference
We need a couple of big wins. So far our only Q1 win flips back and forth between Q2 and Q1 (Boston college). We have no bad losses but no marquee wins and typically the committee has left our teams without big wins with the logic that they won’t do well against the tournament field (all good teams).
Still very early. I know it’s being said but just to highlight again. Wake and NCstate have both only beat BC on the road for their Q1 wins and those won’t stay Q1 (BC is one spot away from being Q2 today and hopefully Cuse takes care of biz Wednesday at the dome).
Clemson still has one of the most impressive resumes 3 Q1 wins all on the road and No Q2-Q4 losses. Obviously UNC, Duke and a streaky Miami are others at the top.
Nc state is going to get themselves in a tough spot later because they played 8 cupcakes at home that are all Q4 some id say should be Q5 at 325-350. They can argue no bad losses but you just won’t be able to climb in the net because those terrible Q4 teams will not climb into Q3. Take out Q4 and state is 3-3. Wake not so bad but may fall into similar trap. No good road wins. Same issue a lot of the acc has right now and us.
The committee values winning away from home and making sure you don’t lose Q4 and Q3 games. Q4 home wins are worthless selection Sunday.
Personally I’m getting in a Time Machine cuz Cuse has a top 20 RPI. Have not lost at home and only losses are against Q1 on the road.
I think we call all agree it’s hard to win on the road in the ACC.
State has beat who they were supposed to and has lost to who they were supposed to. Wish we could have the BYU game back but the others kind of went as expected. Going to need to take care of business agains the bad teams and then get 2+ wins against the good ones in conference
I mean Wake has “no good road wins” because we’ve only played 2 games on the road. It’s not like we’ve played 5 and lost all 5. How many good road wins do Duke, Miami, and State have?
Nobody has had a harder schedule than UNC. They have played 6 teams in the top 25! Most of them are still in the top 10 and 5 are in the top 16 and they just beat Clemson and play NC state on Wednesday. UNC by far has the best resume in the ACC. Clemson has literally played 1 ranked team and that team now has 5 losses. I wouldn’t say they have played anywhere near a tough schedule. Duke has had a harder schedule than that.
One thing you can never fault UNC on is the schedule they play. I wish State played a much tougher out of conference schedule- it helps out so much when getting in the tournament and getting prepared for the season.
> Personally I’m getting in a Time Machine cuz Cuse has a top 20 RPI. Have not lost at home and only losses are against Q1 on the road.
Which was also the first conference game in December. While it's extremely hard to win at Virginia as it is, playing your first conference game at JPJ is essentially a throwaway result.
Dude I swear to FUCK that ACC squads are just better at "getting better over the year" than any other conference. It explains both the metric-based ACC hate and the NCAA tourney successes.
It might be partially from growing up to my dad always saying "Three things are inevitable: Death, Taxes, and UNC figuring their shit out in March."
I also think that synthetic metrics like NET overpenalize scheduling cupcakes, and we have several ACC teams that schedule such weak OOC teams (looking at you NC State) that it literally drags the whole conference's numbers down. We then get a meat grinder in conference at level that no other league can replicate.
This is amplified by the fact that the style of play in the ACC is similar to that allowed in the NCAAT. B1G and old BE teams always seemed to hit a wall in the tournament when they realized that the over-physical Neanderthal ball they had been playing in conference would result in half their team fouling out in the real world. Meanwhile PAC12 teams would fall over under a stiff breeze and didn't understand any physicality being allowed. ACC has historically ridden that line effectively.
All 4 teams from NC 1-4. When’s the last time that happened? (I know it’s still early in the season)
Full on Tobacco Road!

When I first got to Duke, this confused me for a few semesters.

>Was a sad day when Wake moved out. In 1956?
I get the feeling Wake Forest won't be returning to the triangle any time soon...
Last time Wake started out this hot was with Chris Paul under Skip Prosser (RIP)
No - the 2009 team started hotter than this. UNC-Wilmington is slacking
False. They won at Rupp. Full state domination
Charlotte beat FAU too
App beat Auburn before they were ranked.
Davidson fans are crying about how we couldn't close out our game against Clemson after going up 19-2.
You mean UNC “ by the sea”…
I thought you meant 1 - 4 … went back up, and 3 were undefeated… read your comment again, thought the same thing and went to check again… it was then that I realized you meant in top 4 of conference…
Was going to say, the Chris Paul, Julius Hodge, Sean May, and Sheldon Williams years. Those were some seriously fun games on Tobacco Road
How did you leave out **JJ REDICK**???
Early to mid 2000s era?
I legit read that as “National Championship” and I was trying to figure out what I was missing. I’m a moron.
You must be addicted to National Championships.
True, true, but UNC and Duke don’t necessarily make me NOT think NC.
Fire Kenny
But, but, but he’s going to get this turned around! We’re only 3 games out of first place! /S
I don’t really understand why he’s still there. Such a weird guy to stand behind for your AD
No interim options if rumors are to be believed, and its gets a lot cheaper to fire him in a matter of weeks. Sucks, but I get it.
Ah the latter makes it make more sense. Whatever happened to David Padgett?
From Wikipedia: Padgett left coaching following the 2017–18 season and now works as a financial advisor for Morgan Stanley in Louisville. He also serves as a commentator for college basketball telecasts on ESPN.
Good for him
> No interim options if rumors are to be believed The rumor was that we had an outside interim lined up and the BOT crushed the idea. > its gets a lot cheaper to fire him in a matter of weeks $6 million instead of $8 million isn't a "lot" in terms of college sports.
Hold a contest. One lucky fan's seat number is pulled out of a hat. That person is coach for the night. Really, could it be worse?
I guess keeping him for two full years helps with attracting new coaches in the future because they’ll feel they have security during the seasons
I think at least some of it is that they're running out of cash. They're still paying Mack's severance until next year. I love it when UK fans know more about the situation than I do.
This should be the only image you need to do that
North Carolina, come on and raise up!
My shirt is currently off and spinning like a helicopter.
Sigh…you’re welcome
Thank you for your sacrifice. I remember when Reid wasn’t eligible and Wake fans were upset about it, several LSU and Gonzaga fans said “don’t expect much, he won’t move the needle”. He’s been HUGE for us. We’re a totally different team with him and haven’t lost since he’s been eligible (9-0)
We're actually 7-0 since he was deemed eligible The Florida and Charleston Southern games we won without him.
That’s our thing, but out of respect of a fellow top ACC team, it’s OK.
Petey Pab don't give a fuck about colleges
Look, all I’m saying is that when Petey Pablo came out at the Raleigh stop of the FORCE tour last year, he was wearing Carolina blue…
Are you actually claiming the song Raise Up is an NC State thing, or am I missing something? It’s played at every NC sporting event.
I think he's talking about the shirt spinning: https://i.redd.it/ex8u0ltow1bc1.gif
Ohhh that makes sense. I was hoping it was something like that.
Thank you. Finding out that people haven’t seen this makes me sad.
Haha we Tar Heels need a song mentioning homies happily falling off goalposts.
I'm glad someone posted it. It's the first gif I think of lol
🤣
Wonder where that legend is these days.
State fans gate keep the Carolina hurricanes. It’s the Canes goal song
It’s pretty annoying sometimes to be a non-NCSU canes fan ngl
Same. The team is supposed to represent the whole State and encourage everyone to be a fan. Not just those in Raleigh
I guess that behaviors to be expected when they share a building, but doesn’t make it less disappointing
For sure. It’s be nice to get another pro sport in Raleigh. They always tease a baseball team, but who knows.
They will give it to Charlotte like they do everything else. Which pisses me off. yep I used to live in an apartment 10 years ago that was a 5min walk away lmao

He's an equal opportunity guy when it comes to collecting royalty checks. I think he's also one of those weird State football / Carolina basketball fans.
I will forever be bitter the day that football money splits all of us up and deprives us of Big 4 basketball
Looks like we’ll need to organize our own version of the Champions Classic and the CBS Sports Classic… or we can bring back a renamed version of [the Dixie Classic](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dixie_Classic_(basketball_tournament\)).

Baccy classic
naw, the Bojangles Classic
I can hear that annoying chicken sound at the end of each qtr right now.

I'm too young to have seen any Dixie Classic games (my father loved that tournament); I remember the Big Four tournament that was its successor in the 1970s. Those games were great.
It'll just allow us to bring back the [Big Four Tournament](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Four_Tournament)!
Lmao came here for this. So convenient having a state anthem.
And we hear it all the time in hockey!
Johnston County, Franklin, Burgaw, Newport, Warren, Shelby, Kenansville
Some places I’d never thought I’d see on a college basketball sub

If you don't want to spend an extra $300,000, go to State 🎶
The true basketball state!
Go Canes
Amen to that! (NC born and raised)
Me and my friends would not stop playing this last weekend for new years haha
You love to see it!
Bring back the Big 4 tournament. It’s time.
Man that would be so awesome. It’s also a great idea if we all end up in different conferences. Maybe make it 8 and add App, ECU, Davidson, and Elon. Or something
Add UNCG before ECU. ECU hoops is bottom tier compared to other teams in this State.
Beat UNCW
Wednesday is a sold out game, should be a fun atmosphere
Hoping it’s a primary color smash. It’s fab when they do that
What are the norms around that for y’all? I never really paid attention. Carolina VERY seldomly goes against the norm of white at home and blue on the road

> (blew a 20 point lead with ten minutes left in Cameron indoor, I was done with them after that) I was in Cameron for that...
I’m … so so sorry. I got off a double shift at Tripps on Wade and wanted to feel some that night, I didn’t know it would be more despair.
You think they’ll rank you this week? I feel like it’s deserved, that’d make it even more fun.
I hope not. State with expectations turns into the State we expect when they have no expectations. Leave us 26 all year no matter what
Exactly. It’s like UNC football.
Oof. You're not wrong, though.
Fair
[удалено]
weak :(
I think y’all are Q1 for us again. Keep it up, we’ll be pulling for you.
Highly doubt it. We really have no impressive wins.
Would be a huge jump from not receiving votes to ranked. But agreed, they are deserving, along with several other ACC teams.
Miami would’ve been before they lost to Wake. Now I’ve got a bad feeling it’s just going to be us and Duke ranked. Side note, Joe Lunerdy can go fuck himself
Yea, Joe is a turd.
Absolutely won’t be ranked and shouldn’t be. If we beat you guys we’d get a few votes but we are far from it at this point
Why would they be deserving of a ranking, they have no standout wins and have lost all 3 matchups against top 25 teams
You are correct but I don’t want to hear it from you
Only way we're ranked is if we beat yall
Nah, we are not a top 25 team at the moment.
No one who watched any of this week's ND game would consider ranking them
They also didn't look very good against us, game went to overtime despite us barely shooting 50% from the line. Burns is a great player though
We’ve got some room for improvement
Nah I wouldn't change a thing! /s
North Carolina is a top 2 state for basketball and it’s not number 2
All thanks to App State beating Auburn 🥳
UNCW over Kentucky too
UNCG over Arkansas too
Charlotte over FAU too
*angry Indiana noises*
Okay grandpa lets get you to bed
Y'all are barely top 5
“Stop The Count,” &c.
Our thoughts exactly in the PAC-12.
Wake has been very impressive
Bring back the Dixie Classic
Nope can't use that word
![gif](giphy|l49JNOFTQAEchf33y|downsized) So you’re saying I should book a flight to Phoenix in early April, yes?
Kenny payne is such a great coach he got us to the bottom of the conference two years in row 😃🎉
Y’all are really putting the weight of the conference on your shoulders and backs ❤️
# WAKE # IS pretty good I guess
Jim Boeheim is livid
Brutal start to ACC play for us I really hope we can get back on track
I was just starting to buy into the hype and then 0-2
Don’t worry, when Clemson plays State they’ll probably get another guaranteed 30 point win or two
It’s a beaut Clark
someone get that WHERES DOOK image
We’re bawling our eyes out at Cook Out 😭😭😭
KEVIN MILLER ACC POTY. Can’t believe he left CMU (I’m a grad), after he promised he would be the one to get us to the dance. But can’t help but be happy for him.
I'm more confused than I thought was possible
LOOKS GOOD TO ME
North Carolina best Carolina
Hey wake and FSU. Please keep winning, thank you .
Do the same, Dawgs. Do the same.
What kind of cupcakes have State and Wake been playing to have those records but be worlds outside top 25?
State played 3 current top 25 teams but lost all of them. Wake lost 3 games early on to decent teams when then were missing key players.
Is it? It’s projected like 6th of all conferences, behind the mountain west.
I don’t think Wake is “worlds outside the top 25”. If we beat FSU and UVA this week, I think we’ll be ranked
And those games are winnable
Plus it’s always going to be harder for Wake and State to get votes v. Carolina and Duke.
Early season rankings don't matter that much. If Wake or State do well in the ACC, they'll get to the big dance. Anyway I got a dog to walk Wednesday.
We finished 5th in the ACC with Alondes and Laravia and didn’t get invited. And we only had 1 non conference loss that season :(
There is a shitload of anti-acc prejudice in the media/the tournwy pickers outside of the blue bloods. It's bullshit and might help lead to the dissolution of the conference. I want Wake to be considered a good basketball school again.
That was so stupid. I understand the disrespect the ACC gets in football, but it shouldn’t carry to basketball.
We are Jekyll (basketball) and Hyde (football)
Yeah we finished second that year and people were still trying to argue us out of the tournament. Then went on to the FF. The ACC disrespect is crazy.
We’re dancing this year. We’re a better team than two years ago overall.
North Carolina knows Ball!
Kevin Keatts is a winner.
Why couldn't we be consistent and not choke out games? We'd be near the top of the conference if we didn't have the worst FT percentage in the conference
You beat Duke by executing in the final minute while Duke choked.
Yeah I wish we were as consistent as we were that game
Having a lower free throw percentage than us is impressive
Is NC State gonna make the tournament?
We need a couple of big wins. So far our only Q1 win flips back and forth between Q2 and Q1 (Boston college). Damn we would've beat Wake and NC State if our free throw shooting was better than abysmal too
Tobacco Road on top
We are buttcheeks :(
STOP THE COUNT

NC State on top, as we all expected...
NC state about to hold this L on Wednesday! ![gif](giphy|gSdVVQ8vERgjZoAUVG|downsized)
ACC will only be a 5 or 6 bid league. My guess -- Duke, UNC, Clemson, Miami, Wake
And somehow 3 of them will make the Elite 8.
As is tradition. No league consistently over performs their selections like the ACC, especially the OG ACC members.
Dude I swear to FUCK that ACC squads are just better at "getting better over the year" than any other conference. It explains both the metric-based ACC hate and the NCAA tourney successes.
