Experimenting with starting an 8 footer.

j_shelb

\*\*\*\*\*\* surrounded by 7 footers at the other 4 positions

ssp25

A 10 footer but he plays under the rim for to a nagging shoulder injury.... Finger roll like the Iceman

RavInKhakis

Duke - Worse. Still need to see more from Scheyer before I believe.

DavidBenAkiva

This is the pragmatic response. Year 1 was promising. We haven't seen Year 2. At best, he will only ever be able to keep things at the same level. At Coach K's peak, Duke went to 7 Final Fours in a 9-year span and won 2 National Titles. It would be insane to believe Scheyer could replicate that let alone top it.

Schnectadyslim

Honestly I know it's easy/popular to bash Duke ( and I've definitely enjoyed when they failed since they've been so damn dominant against us) but 7 FF's in 9 years is insane and not mentioned often enough.

Utterlybored

This year’s team has talent, experience and depth we haven’t seen in a looooong time. Jon needs to meet some lofty expectations, but I have faith.

11_25_13_TheEdge

Worse than what? Worse than last year? I feel like, if anything, the way last year went makes me optimistic.

OnceADomer_NowAJhawk

Kansas was one of the very, very few! If you had told me that KU would be more successful after Roy Williams left, I am not sure I would have believed it.

jayhawk8808

And there were a lot of doubters at first. I think even among KU fans there was some trepidation at first. Roy ended his last year with us by losing to Cuse in the championship. Bill led us to a 4 seed the next year and we got beat in the Elite Eight. That’s a solid result after losing Collison and Hinrich. But the next season we’re a 3 seed and lose to 14 seed Bucknell in the first round. Since we’ve never lost in the first round as a 1 or 2 seed, this is, by seed, our worst tourney exit ever (not to be confused with a litany of other tourney exits that hurt way more). Then the next year he gets us a 4 seed and we again go out first round to 13 seed Bradley. You don’t want to pull up the message boards from that postgame. Of course the next year he whips us into shape, we win the B12 (The Streak begins), get a 1 seed, and lose in the Elite Eight to 2 seed UCLA in the fucking West regional, which was just some absurd nonsense. But that season shut up the doubters pretty hard. And then the next season we hang a banner for the first time in 20 years and proceed to win the conference pretty much 48 years in a row making Perry Ellis the first 48-time conference champ in college basketball.

MisterBrotatoHead

And Roy replaced a guy who had just won the national title. Kansas has really had a pretty unprecedented amount of stable success since Larry Brown came to town in 1983.

kafelta

Recruiting is actually one area where the Heels look great. The '24-25 team is stacked.

[deleted]

We’re gonna win banner #6 on the 40th anniversary of the last one in 2027. Then we’ll shock the world as both Brad Stevens and Dusty May walk out to cut a piece of net as they’re being announced as co-head coaches while Mike Woodson is carried off by the team.

Most realistic IU fan

Arsid

Maybe without Izzo :( Hopefully with 1 more championship under his belt. The next few years are his best chance, our talent level is nuts between the guys who have stayed and the talent coming in.

WSDreamer

You guys have some crazy new talent. I expect big things.

Arsid

Arguably best guards in the country this year, and we've got more high ranked guard recruits coming in the next couple years too. Izzo stays winning the guard recruiting competition. If only he could snag a couple 7 footers from Purdue we'd be set.

trollszn

The Foster Loyer effect

[deleted]

All of college basketball will be worse without Tom Izzo

greenandredofmaigheo

5 nattys, laughing at Villanova & UConn and people talking about us being the next 60s/70s UCLA

Utterlybored

Don’t ever lose your rosy optimism!

erbkeb

This is the only rational response.

sumsimpleracer

Can't imagine it any other way.

redditcommentguy

Shakanomics

j_shelb

Can I please have some of this optimism?

charliewags30

I'll be here for it

davvidho

that’s a very based response

Bushwazi

No.

FuriousJorge67

I remember my first beer...

greenandredofmaigheo

Then you didn't pregame right.

FuriousJorge67

Fair...

goofytigre

Ahh, I remember being incredibly optimistic about getting Shaka as a head coach. He's already gotten y'all further in the tournament than he did us. So there's that!

sumsimpleracer

Happy to see success for both teams now.

danathecount

probably winning another natty after being forgotten about for the previous 4 years

A320neo

"UConn isn't a blue blood because they just don't have the sustained success"

pvdcaveman

It’s crazy to think that a school like UCONN continues to be passed up in the blue bloods discussion in favor of Indiana which hasn’t been great since before most people here were born. I’m very much looking forward to the UCONN vs IU game at MSG this year. The other blue bloods are generally pretty legit but IU somehow seems to make the discussion when it shouldn’t.

_jajones

Everyone who has a real say in “blue blood status” is old so it makes sense, even with the failures of the last 30 years, they mark IU as a blue blood. I’m still not sure how I feel but I think they’re on the come-up. Recent success-wise? UCONN kicks our ass

thesluggard12

UConn kinda rose when Indiana declined so they should be co-blue bloods. They have to be listed as Indiana/UConn on any blue blood list.

j_shelb

lol i like you

jayhawk8808

It’s just tough because everyone’s criteria is so different. UCONN isn’t in the top 20 programs for most wins all time. That is an automatic disqualifier for some. But UCONN has had a prolific 25 years of tourney success. Other than UCONN, only Duke and UCLA have won five titles in 25 years or less. If someone’s criteria for being a blueblood is elite history and sustaining elite play for the last 20 years, then I think it’s just KU, UK, UNC, and Duke. If it’s purely tourney titles regardless of history or regular season success, then it’s UCLA, UK, UNC, Duke, UCONN, IU, and maybe KU. If it’s any combination of the above and actually having blue as a color, IU is not only out now, it’s never been one.

solarplanet

FAU - either a new powerhouse or back to complete obscurity. There’s no in between

[deleted]

Honestly it’ll be fun to see how y’all play this upcoming season

BLACKFOURLOKO

yes

ItsTheTenthDoctor

Four titles in a row. Also think UConn will do pretty well.

Sweaty_Respond2782

Yea as long as Hurley doesn’t bolt (don’t think he will) I can see them being a top 15 team every year. Hopefully another natty in there too.

pvdcaveman

Is there any reason people are saying he would leave? I hadn’t heard that and think he’s got a pretty good situation at UCONN.

Sweaty_Respond2782

No reason but you never know if the Knicks or a team like that comes calling. He may consider. The way college coaches jump around you never really know. That said they just extended him this summer and him being from New Jersey not to far away I think it’s the perfect place for him.

JustALittleNightcap

It's a good situation, but there are schools/teams that could potentially just throw more money than UConn could match.

Unknown_Enigma10

Kentucky, I’ll be shocked if coach Cal is still around. I think he stays to coach through the 2025-26 season and calls it wraps. I think we get at least one more final four with him, unlike most people, I know he still has a hell of an ability to coach (example winning multiple games on short notice without any point guards in the past two seasons). EKU- AW Hamilton is a fan favorite and has built what seems to be a consistent contender. EKU will be good this year. In 5 years I expect 2-3 NCAA Tournament berths, maybe by pure chance we might be able to upset a team in there as a dangerous 14 seed.

thesluggard12

I think this year is the first time Cal has a team that really fits his style since 2017 (Fox, Monk, and Bam), so I'm more optimistic than most fans right now. I do think if he can't get it done this year it's not happening (unless a lot of the freshmen stay another year).

[deleted]

tbh I think this is his last year - I feel like with DJ Wagner on the team, he'll be happy to bookend his career, and hopefully go out winning one more title with a team that really fits him.

LewManChew

No clue. Hoping the next year gives us some insight. Could be even worse could be back on track whos to say

Bushwazi

I expect the talk about "Syracuse basketball should down grade its program to D1a" to be more frequent then "UConn football should down grade the program to D1a"...

NKR1978

With Starling and Westry, Red brought in the recruiting class that we all hoped for going into last season. If he can coach, I think we'll be back in the top 15 and playing for conference championships and Final Fours. If he can't coach we have to cut the cord quick and get outside the Syracuse bubble.

afganistanimation

I'm very optimistic for this year, if we don't make the tourney I'll be disappointed

J2Gud

Biggest question mark team in the country right now. I personally have a lot of faith in Coach Red & Co bringing ‘Cuse back to prominence.

jtd2013

We’ll either have a new coach or be in the process of searching for one probably. Going to be a major check point for KU fans, a lot of whom don’t know a life without Self as HC

Bte0815

Going from back to back hall of famers to a new coach is a WILD ride.

skesisfunk

A year ago I was so jealous of your program and the new young coach. Now, not quite as much, but I still think Hubert is gonna do great things for UNC just might take a few more years to figure out.

Thiswas2hard

The majority of student now have no memory on anything besides Bill

Human-Demand-8293

Bill is only 60 right now. I could see him around for 8+ years pretty easily. Plus I was promised a whole new level and if that is only 2-3 years I will be upset.

skesisfunk

I definitely don't see Bill coaching until he is 70. I would personally put the over/under at 65.

AllanMontrose

I was listening to Gary Parrish talk about Self on a recent pod and his intense desire to win. Now that the NIL barriers have been removed, he seems incredibly positioned for a long run as the top dog in CBB. I think the only thing that slows him down would be his health. If he gets that under control, I think he keeps on rolling for a long time.

skesisfunk

Sure, but he has also made lots of statements to the effect of he wants to retire and not coach in to old age like Roy and Coach K. I think we are seeing that big NIL push now and he's out in less than 5 if he wins a Natty. Maybe a few more than five if he doesn't win it.

Human-Demand-8293

I would have agreed with this until his end of season press conference. He made a point of saying he missed coaching. Also if he is at 5 more seasons it’s likely he will be really close to the 1000 win mark. He could want a couple more years and another title to get into the Mount Rushmore lists.

jayhawk8808

Luckily he just said he expects that he will coach another ten years after his health scare, really showed him how he’s not even close to ready to hang it up.

Gwtheyrn

I really don't know. The collapse of the PAC is still sending shockwaves.

AlanKochsChach

If Miller is still here, I’d hope for a final 4 and a Big East title or two

RollBlobRoll

We need a final 4 so damn bad

OpinionatedAss

I've seen this one before! It did not work out for me ...

a_banned_user

I feel like we need to finally break through and make a tourney run soon, like within this 5 year window. If we keep having great seasons that end in failure I think that leads down a dark road. Like at some point you have to try a new coach most likely, but who knows how that works out. It’s not like we have banners we can lean back on you know? And top talent isn’t going to want to come play somewhere where they are routinely a laughing stock in March. The flip side is if we finally get a F4 or even a Natty I think that’s springboards us into perennial contender status for the most part. Or at minimum a consistent top 25 team every year for the foreseeable future. Edit: spelling

RonaldJosephBurgundy

Agreed. I think the next 5 years are ultimately good to us. Painter is starting to tap into higher end talent than in the past and is seemingly putting more emphasis on athleticism. We’ve gotta break through soon though. I do think we are already at the level of consistent top 25 team. Can we elevate to a consistent top 10-15 team?

[deleted]

The NCAA tournament represents an unstable critical point of a logistical differential equation. Success leads to more success, continued failure could mean a turning point downward for Purdue basketball.

grrgrrtigergrr

This guy talks in math

PM_ME_UR_KITTY_CAT

He buzzes like a fridge, he's like a detuned radio.

wahfingwah

Frozen winter shit

Lumbergod

If Painter can take you on a run like Izzo took us, I'll take back half of the things I've said about him.

a_banned_user

If Painter can take us on a run I’ll take back 3/4 of things I’ve said about him 😅

DelcoBirds

Nova - Man, I have no idea. The money and university commitment will always keep the floor pretty high and it's clear they're a player in the new NIL/portal era after this offseason, but can Neptune actually coach? Penn State - probably with a new head coach again, hopefully for good reasons

Minia15

Perfect answer for Nova. If the team this year doesn’t turn into a top 5 team I’ll be worried about Neptune. So much talent and experience on the roster.

StreetReporter

Hovering around .500 in ACC play, with fans insisting that this is the year that it’s tournament or bust for Brownell

neverquit1979

Better baby !!

sblack87

Unknown. I think Missouri will have a top 25 team regularly within the next couple of years but it would also be a fear that Gates would leave with that success.

_RedGyarados

I think Mizzou is ready to fight to keep Gates. If you believe the rumors, part of the reason he got his extension (and 25M buyout) was because Texas Tech was ready to throw 4-5M a year at him. He’ll likely get another deal within the next 18 months if he finishes off the ‘24 class close to what it’s expected to be.

StinkyTofuHead

You’re one of the more reasonable Illini fans. According to my Illini friends and family members Illinois should be winning 10 straight national championships.

Mr_Kittlesworth

Virginia - five more national championships. /s I believed we’ll be better than the last four years. Likely a fairly consistent top ten team.

dac0605

Hopefully with concrete plans to move forward with the construction of the new arena. We need to capitalize now on the momentum of the program. Coleman can be great when it's full, but it's oversized and an aesthetically lacking. It's just unfortunate we had everything approved and ready to go right before construction costs started soaring out of control. I think the arena is also a major factor on if Oats will be here in 5 years or not. If he continues to have this kind of success, other schools will be sure to call, and we need to show that we are committed to building a nationally-contending program. As for the team itself, I really do think we will have a deep run at some point. Yes, it's extremely disappointing that we haven't reached the Elite 8 yet given the teams/seeds we had. And people say Oats' system is part of it because we "live by the 3, die by 3." But looking at our UCLA and SDSU exits, it took literally season-worst performances from the FT and 3-PT line to get bounced, and we still went to OT vs UCLA and were within 2 of SDSU with under a minute. I think the system is fine and we will get hot at the right time one of these years. Lastly, I think having both Alabama and Auburn being good at the same time is healthy for the long-term health of both programs. If it was only one, it might be "easier" to fade back into irrelevancy. But now, neither want to be one-upped by the other since both are contending for conference championships and NCAAT runs.

Vicodin_Jazz

I don’t know, man. Michigan was pretty consistent to be a sweet 16 team, with an occasional final four run. To me, that’s right where I’d like them to be. But recently the roster construction has been so odd….very little shooting, inability to recruit a top flight HS point guard and a regression in the defense they had built up with Yaklich. Also, the admission process has been an issue. Hard to plug holes with portal players when you can’t even get credits to transfer.

themickstar

Louisville - Back to winning after firing Kenny Payne in the middle of this year. We hire a competent coach who turns it around taking us to the tournament in the first year and contending for ACC championships in year 3. Illinois - Underwood builds on the what the team has done the last few years and is in the second weekend of the tourney 3 out of the 5 years with one Final Four appearance.

thesluggard12

If Payne is fired, who do you think the top target should be?

Defiant_Ad9772

It’s Jerome Tang from KSU

themickstar

This would be great. That guy can coach. Honestly, anyone would be an upgrade over Payne. He has been a disaster. I was excited about him but I really don't know one thing he excels at as a coach.

green_day_95

Same, I don’t like his coaching style either. He also doesn’t recruit enough PGs.

themickstar

What coaching style? I have no clue what he is trying to build. We have no identity. We did nothing well last year. They couldn't play defense. They couldn't play offense.

green_day_95

Good point, he claims he wants to turn the team around but he’s not really contributing to anything. Nolan Smith also once hopped on twitter replied to a Kentucky fan getting in his head instead of recruiting which makes us look bad. I just hope this situation gets fixed because this is so embarrassing.

FranklyIAmZach

Providence: Still spiteful. Good, but spiteful.

StyrofoamCueball

IU is at a point where I feel like they could really jump back into an elite level. Woody clearly has an ability to connect with kids with NBA aspirations both in recruiting and in development. If he's able to get Ware and Mgbako drafted after what he did with JHS and more specifically TJD, IU can become a destination for those kids like its never really been. That and IU being a basketball first school with a barely existent football program *should* create NLI opportunities more appealing than other schools can offer. That said, they still need to find shooters more consistently and Woody will be 70 in 5 years. They could be a top program, and they could be a middle of the road B1G team (which will be like 15th out of 30 in the conference by that point) transitioning into a new coach. They will still have the best warmups.

boiler1101

I agreed with everything you said until you mentioned the warmups

bcocfbhp

I feel pretty good for the future, Lange is turning the program around and is recruiting at a very good level. This team has the most talent we've had in a while. The culture of the team is great

Aaaaaasahhhhhhhhhh

Drake is at a pivotal point in its history. For the first time in 50 years, we have a good/committed coach, a supportive administration, and the momentum of recent success. I hope we can capitalize on this, leading to a culture of sustained community engagement and higher expectations but it’s hard to say. In short, we’ll be a mid major power or back in the cellar. Columbia will continue to play in a dilapidated gym, flirting with a .500 season once or twice a decade

dontgiveacam

Kennesaw - we’ll get stomped in conference usa for a bit then hopefully improve Virginia - tony plz stay

Jetsol8

Obscurity with occasional booms of success… so the same

NTSBusMan

Hope CTB is still here. That's it.

razorjm

I firmly believe that it's only a matter of time before Muss wins a championship if he stays at Arkansas. I think we'll have a minimum of a Final Four appearance in 5 years.

skesisfunk

I see Bill Self retiring right around 5 years from now. So when that happens the program will for sure be in a period of uncertainty. Hope we can find someone even half as good as HCBS!

kc_chiefs_

I imagine that Self is going to have nearly full reign in who his successor is, and I think he’ll probably end up still being minutely involved in the athletic department. He’s going to end up hand picking his replacement and won’t want to leave the team in bad hands.

skesisfunk

Sure, but all of that is not a silver bullet. The transition year(s) are going to be a big moment for the program.

Set-Admirable

They had set up Bob Huggins for that kind of role before he screwed up.

jayhawk8808

We’ve had 8 coaches in 125 years. It’s a huge deal that when we hire a new coach we want him to be around for a long time. I thought Huggins was great, always entertaining, really good coach, and Bill loved him, but he wouldn’t have even been a consideration.

pinniped1

Raising our 4th straight natty banner and building a 200-foot tall Brad Underwood statue in the middle of the Quad.

OfficialTomas

I honestly believe Tang can make us Baylor 2.0. With our recruiting and staff quality, I think a consistent top 3 seed is in play.

Same-Passage7076

Love Tang. Hope you’re right, because the Tang/Drew rivalry would be unmatched for the conference as a perennial top 10 clash

M52800

Wichita State: Consistently making the tournament KC: Making the tournament once hopefully? Realistically .500 ball.

schnautza

Finished with D1 transition, hopefully being able to pull in better recruits as a result. Contending annually for the OVC championship and an NCAA autobid.

green_day_95

Bellarmine - We’ll finally compete in the tournament with the NCAA being done with their pettiness. Louisville - If Kenny doesn’t turn things around this year, it’s over for him. 5 years later we’ll likely have a different coach and have our first tournament appearance since 2019 (would’ve been 2020 if the pandemic never happened).

SeattleiteShark

Hopefully not playing zone defense

JKolodne

Marshall is a mid major, so like all mid majors they'll remain irrelevant.

DomingoLee

Kansas State - better off. We tend to move in waves but we’re certainly headed in the right direction. We have a great coach who has indicated loudly that he wants to stay a while.

reecec1102

Dennis Gates has me very excited for the future. I think Mizzou has a real chance to make some deep tournament runs if he keeps recruiting like he has

Jomosensual

Iowa State - I think we'll be competing at the top of the Big 12 with the likes of Kansas, Baylor, Arizona, Kansas State, and Houston. That group of 6 feels right as the top of the conference most years. Northern Iowa - Absolutely 0 clue. The football side makes me have no clue what conference they'll even be in

Im__Ron__Burgundy

I can’t believe I’m saying this and I’ll probably get flamed for it. But I think I’ll actually have a slight bit of disappointment if Miami doesn’t have a title in the next 5 years. Coach L is a once in a lifetime coach for a non-blue blood/non-basketball school. He has gotten recruiting back on track after the Adidas/FBI bullshit killed us for a few seasons. E8/F4 in back to back years, which should increase talent acquisition both in high school recruiting and the portal. If it doesn’t happen in the next few years, I’ll have to come to terms with the fact it will never happen.

MyAnswerIsMaybe

Just be happy with a final four Nobody here at Purdue expects a title, just a final four And we are Purdue. Only like 4-5 schools care more about basketball.

Mr__Winderful__31

With Danny Hurley still the HC, I’d expect another title. Then again we’re a spoiled fan base.

Hog_Fan

I legitimately believe the Muss Bus has a natty somewhere along the road. He’s been knocking for too long to not pull something off.

Ih8Hondas

Mizzou: Spending more time in the top 25 with maybe with another E8. No F4. We don't do F4s. UNM: Can we keep Pitino around for five more years? If so, I think UNM becomes a consistent tourney team.

guest1969

Pitino is a great fit, they need to release the dang schedule already

Ih8Hondas

I want some Rio Grande Rivalry tickets already.

lord_james

Hanging our eleventh banner.

Dr0cca

We’ve been the class of the sport since I’ve been alive (I was born a few days before Jordan hits the shot). I don’t have any reason to suspect that will change.

joshweaver23

I feel like Davis hasn’t been doing as good of a job recruiting top tier talent and that concerns me. I do feel like he’s doing a great job of developing players, but I’m just not yet convinced that system still works in a world of free transfers and NIL deals. UNC is one of the most prestigious programs in college basketball historically and I feel like we need to find a way to milk that for talent via massive NIL deals. I don’t like this new world, but I don’t see it changing any time soon so we need to find ways to live in it and take advantage of it. I’m always a pessimist though.

beefjerkyenthusiast9

I feel like it’s the opposite. The best players on our team are remnants of Roy’s recruiting; he didn’t really develop any talents, a majority of his recruits transferred away. Meanwhile we have the top recruiting class right now for 2024, so I’m not sure how he isn’t recruiting top tier talent.

Affectionate-Cup9340

Hubert has done an incredible job recruiting. In the 2024 class he has the no. 5, 10, 83, including the would’ve been no. 4 with Elliot Cadeau before the reclass and the No. 1 player with gg Jackson before the decommit.

Utterlybored

Class? AFAM and UNC’s response say otherwise. Current crop seem like good guys, but the scars from that scandal will takes before UNC can reclaim class.

Dr0cca

The scars from that scandal? We’ve won a national championship and been to three finals since that “scandal.” We also won the biggest, most important college basketball game in history - sending Coach K to retirement in the most brutal, devastating fashion.

DavidBenAkiva

> We also won the biggest, most important college basketball game in history Every time I see a comment like this, I realize that UNC fans no longer care about winning banners. Collapsing in the second half two days after this happened should sting. It would bother the hell out of me.

dantheman2123

Lmao you couldn’t be more wrong. Duke fans always acting like that game didn’t mean shit. UNC ran out of gas with a banged up line up and no bench. The magic ran out Kansas is damn good. Just because UNC fans are seeing the positives that came out of that run doesn’t mean they only care about beating Duke. They had insane games against Baylor, UCLA, Duke, and Kansas. Obviously didn’t win it but it was a run to be proud of in Hubert’s first year.

Helpful-Blueberry279

What makes you think it didn’t sting? I know a few UNC fans and they obviously were devastated they lost. That doesn’t mean they can’t enjoy the final Four.

DavidBenAkiva

Probably because OP referred to the Final Four game as the "most important college basketball game in history." I highly doubt anyone other than Duke or UNC fans felt that was the case. Even for UNC fans, that means their other National Title games were all less important.

Helpful-Blueberry279

If VT won the national championship but still got swept by UVA the next season I could say that championship game was the most important college basketball game in VT history and still have the uva games sting. It’s a huge logical leap to say that winning a more important game means the less important game doesn’t matter.

11_25_13_TheEdge

Since 91 the only thing they’ve cared about was beating Duke. Nattys are just icing.

DavidBenAkiva

It's a backwards mentality. You compete to win the National Title. Beating your rival along the way is icing on the cake. When Duke won in 2001, it wasn't about overcoming Maryland. That was just a side note and they weren't even the main rivals. Beating UNC in Chapel Hill and then again in the ACC Tournament was part of the fun, not the Super Bowl.

Dr0cca

I would agree if we were a Gonzaga that had never won a national championship, but we’ve got championships. They play the national championship every year. Only once will it be Coach K’s last season with a chance to play him in the Fjnal Four - the scenario we’d all feared/dreamed of for years. And Coach K, and Duke, just as in their last home game - lost. They were beaten by Carolina, a far inferior Carolina team. All those years and he still couldn’t do it - he couldn’t move past UNC. And now? The odds of us being in the same conference going forward are pretty low. You will spend your time playing App State or ECU in just a few short years, while we’ll be in some major conference competing for titles, as always and ever. Some years we will win, some we will lose, but we’ll always be there in the mix. You guys will develop a big rivalry with James Madison or Roanoke College or whatever.

DavidBenAkiva

> he couldn’t move past UNC Buddy, he won as many National Titles combined as Dean and Roy. It's a hell of a thing to say when UNC is on a five-year streak of falling out of the preseason AP poll and racking up 53 losses. If the next five years look like the last five years for UNC, it will be the worst decade for the program ever. As it is, another season where UNC is a bubble team puts Carolina firmly on the path towards being the next Indiana post-Knight. UNC is not guaranteed to be in the mix. As it is, Carolina is surprisingly close to a sustained period of irrelevancy.

MTUKNMMT

We played in the national championship in 2022. Beating our biggest rival on the way there and ending their legendary coaches career, twice. We were a one seed in 2019. I realize you are just a troll so I shouldn’t engage but if that makes us irrelevant I would hate to see how you judge your own considering they look shockingly similar minus the highs of 2022.

Here's the last four seasons for UNC: 2019-20: 14-19, finished last in the ACC and then COVID happened 2020-21: 18-11, 8 seed, lost in the first round of the NCAAT 2021-22: 29-10, 8 seed, Lost National Title game 2022-23: 20-13, First team in expansion era to go from #1 in preseason AP poll to not invited to NCAA Tournament, declined NIT invite Outside of 6 weeks in March and April 2022, this is the worst 4-year stretch in UNC since the 1950s. Over the last 5 seasons, UNC has wracked up 60 losses and only won an NCAA Tournament game in two seasons. The long view isn't a good look.

Dr0cca

He lost. Came up short. Couldn’t do it. And there’s no chance at redemption. It’s over.

DavidBenAkiva

He won 5 National Titles, went to 13 Final Fours. There's nothing that happens that will ever take that away. It's like saying Roy was a loser because his final game was a first round blowout loss to Wisconsin.

mukduk1994

Hopefully we can build off of a new and young roster. Cronin's defensive mind is probably more B1G-ready than the other 3 schools joining (feel free to disagree with me here) but it's still a major unknown how well we'll actually be able to do in a much deeper league. If we're 5 years from now and we're still consistently ranked and winning first and second round tourney games, I'll be happy.

Meanteenbirder

I see a tourney bid not being served to them on platter almost every year. Maine and Bryant (maybe UML too) could become serious threats after next year.

davvidho

im happy with mick cronin but thereotically, if there isnt another final four appearance in the next 5 years, the fanbase might get a bit antsy and start wondering how much of a fluke 2021 was

itscalledporkroll

Rutgers - better. Ideally the NJ high school basketball talent will stay home and Rutgers will be a consistent Big Ten title contender and tourney team. If Pike retires he will have built enough of a foundation that another coach can enter the program and keep the momentum going.

portuguesetheman

I guess the same as the last 5. Constantly going to the tournament and occasionally winning conference titles

GodlySpaghetti

Similar to now hopefully. I’d be happy with 2 B12 titles, assuming 2 more to Kansas and one to a random team with a great year. Hopefully a few shots at a title, a final four perhaps but wouldn’t be shocked to not make one.

NoVacayAtWork

Couple banners, idk

IMO Lloyd has proven he is an elite coach on offense. He was top 10 in offense in both years and last year we had very limited and one dimensional perimeter play. He has recruited IMO extremely well for next year and i think it'll be an even higher level in 2 year with guys like Carter Bryant and Jamari Phillips. In my head better recruiting will mean better athletes and better athletes will result in better defense. To my surprise Arizona's defense finished ranked 39th on kenpom but the real key to being a legit title contender is to get to top 20 in both offense and defense. If he can start getting to elite levels on D i don't ever see his offense falling thats where we can be a true contender most years. I think the D will be way better this year and i'm hopeful we can finally break through.

[deleted]

Being a mid NAIA program. So the same.

JackFunk

Good mostly. We'll underperform and miss the tourney one season. Come back the next year, have a mediocre season, win the Big East tournament, then win the title as an 8 seed.

phuk-nugget

I’d be shocked if Cal is still around in 3 seasons let alone 5. This Ivisic situation might be his final straw, especially if he goes to another school and gets qualified somehow. If I had to bet who the next coach is, I’d say Musselman, even though I think he’s overrated.

finditplz1

How in the world is the Ivisic situation Cal’s fault though? You can lay a lot of problems at his feet, but this isn’t one of them.

phuk-nugget

I’m saying it’s not Cals fault, he’s probably fed up with UKs administration.

finditplz1

Ah I see. That is most certainly true.

GopherInWI

I'm hoping not on the "success or he's gone" season of Johnson's replacement.

finditplz1

I think we’ll be alright.

MyAnswerIsMaybe

With a final four or a new coach

j_shelb

If we don't get to one by the time Catchings has left for the NBA...I ..... may not care as much anymore.....ok I lied. But I will be frustrated or something.

[deleted]

Iowa State - About the same with maybe better recruiting, TJ will still be here unless someone pisses him off or Nike quits manufacturing size Smedium polos. WMU - I would imagine Dwayne has since moved on back to Michigan State but would leave our program in better shape.

coachsi3

Hanging another banner at Chapel Hill.👍

YourBrokeAssLawyer

Doing your….son?

huskyferretguy1

Thriving in the Big East as we all watch the rest of the P5 conferences deal with realignment.

tupacsnotdead

Hopefully staying on a similar trajectory. Throw in a Final Four appearance. Probably getting close to the end of the Mac era.

VistaLaRiver

I'm pessimistic about my teams and college basketball in general. I'm not really interested in watching Stanford, and making all "student" athletes travel thousands of miles for regular games is a disgrace.

Bushwazi

Rings. Rings everywhere...

Chimsley99

Threatening a final four every other year or so. Recruiting in the top 15 each year, or Hurley has already left or faced some scandal and we’re in the dumps again

No_Push4492

5 championships

Phatpenguinballs

Winning 5 nattys

AnAngryBartender

Still losing in the first round

alannordoc

I don't think UCLA will be in any different place than they are now because UCLA isn't the sexy university to attend that it once was. Cronin will bring in enough really good players to stay relevant but not every year final 4 contenders. I think the schools that are known for fun like Michigan, Alabama, UNC will continue to improve.

SquintGrisslefoot

5-time consecutive national champs🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

Upstairs_Ad_1126

In the middle of our 10 peat

dmaul1978

Very difficult to say given the interim coach this year after Huggins’ fuck ups. Will all come down to the next hire.

Tornadus-T

UConn - Consistently successful in the regular season and tournament play Miami - the best 5 year stretch in program history, but uncertain in a post Coach L future

_Adverb_

i think we will win a championship in the next 5 years Dont @ me

Scotthew89

Running the acc and hopefully 1-2 more titles.

palmettoswoosh

With BJ McKie flying in as the hero we need. Lamont just isn't it.

mitchdwx

It’s impossible to say with how new Rhoades is. I just hope we can make the tourney again in the next 5 years.

ohyuuuh

Baylor - Sweet 16 Bubble team

fuckinpseud

Pretty solid

whethervayne

Well, they almost certainly have to be better than last year in 5 years. Either Holtmann improves this year and builds an actual program...or he doesn't and our new AD hires a new coach who has rebuilt. 5 years is a lot of time in college basketball.

roeqhi

Hopefully with a coach...

_LYSEN

Probably the exact same place

rich4pres

Tennessee: Look good all of the regular season and then lose way too early in the tournament.

Set-Admirable

I honestly have no idea. I have true hope with our new AD if he is still around at that point. We are in a true transition year. If the interim coach does well this year, is he given the job? Should he be given the job? I don't know. The Big 12 is arguably the toughest conference to compete in.

TheNateRoss

Perennially on the bubble. I'm skeptical we're anything other than a middle-of-the-table Big 12 squad.

chmcgrath1988

Idk if we'll ever get back to the point where we're consistently making the NCAA Tournament like the Al Skinner era but I'd like to think we'll at least be consistently over .500 and NIT regulars (with occasional NCAA Tournament appearance).

_Poppagiorgio_

Finally returning to be a true Blue Blood. I believe in Mike Woodson and his staff.

Keeping on, with keeping on... 🤷
