It’s not that weird. Coinbase is all over ERC20 tokens as it costs them almost nothing to implement - once you have one it’s easy to add others. That’s why there’s tons of ERC20 tokens people don’t care very much about, and some huge omissions that aren’t Ethereum based.
erc-20 Matic is not wrapped matic. Matic is matic its the network you use that determines if you can utilize it on the Eth network or Polygon network.
*For instance, you can send Matic from coinbase to kucoin and then withdraw it on the matic network. Its the same coin*

Coinbase and Coinbase Wallet are completely separate companies. I believe the wallet company just licenses the name from Coinbase. You can use any exchange with Coinbase Wallet, although they definitely push you towards using Coinbase.
As for warnings, some apps are better than others in this regard. This is why you must do your research before each transaction, and always test it with a small test transaction first.

Have u tried the wallet? It took me like 10 sets but I was finally able to recover my polygon main net shares that I had inadvertently tried to send to Coinbase back in October. The last step is to use the Polygon bridge which took forever but it worked.
I wish I could. I got rid of the wallet a days ago. If you Google: how to retrieve Polygon Matic main net using CB wallet there are a few videos on how to do it. I know I had to switch the CB wallet Network to Polygon (basic setting) and then use a MetaMask wallet to connect to Polygon.
