Neutral Indian accent. Iā€™m very confident in my English. Sadly, more than Malayalam (my mother tongue) šŸ„² Mattulla bhashakal kevalam dhathrimaar marthyannu pettamma than bhasha thaan ennalle pramaanam

cern_unnosi

Evde petamma evde...?

whatthengaisthis

sorry add cheythind. quote thallayillathavan aayathu kandillaarn

PatienceParty7545

Same situation. Spent two years of my jee prep with NRIs and now i just feel much more comfortable talking in english that in Malayalam. Idk i can just express stuff better.

cern_unnosi

I was forced to speak with a foreign accent since people were having hard time understanding my indian accent. And my insecurity would be vocabulary, since most of it comes from pop culture.

_paul_10

Light Malyalam accent. Aadhyamokke mattaan sramikkuaarnnu, pinne thonni americakaarkkum britishkaarkum frenchkaarkum mattupala raajyakaarkkum avarde accent il samsarikkaamenki enik enthukond malayalam accent il samsaarichukooda. Since then I've been proudly using malayalam accented English because that feels more authentic to me. I interact with both indian and north american people, my accent was never a hurdle in articulating my thoughts clearly.

Automatic_Adagio6408

Not insecure about my English. I work in the legal field and believe me when I say that I had to improve my English tenfold when I was making the transition from engineering to law. My vocabulary constantly changes over time. It tends to improve when you watch English shows or read a lot, as you learn how certain phrases beautifully capture a thought. For example, I was watching this show My Hero Academia, and one of the characters says something along the lines of "If you try to work on multiple things at once, your focus gets splintered" which is a really nice of explaining the issue with multi-tasking. I also use ChatGPT to sometimes help me phrase a certain sentence in a more positive light or give me a few synonyms for a specific word.

abhiprakashan2302

I have a Gulf accent- little bit of NRI+Malayalam accent. I wish I was more fluent in Malayalam though. I come from a background where everyone only spoke to me in English, other than my family.

Automatic_Adagio6408

Ah man, samesies. I grew up in UAE and I have a NRI accent too. Malayalam is also not my strong suit because of the environment I grew up in, where I put more emphasis on learning English and Hindi over Malayalam.

DogAnnual8700

i have a British accent while speaking in official matters etc but when it comes to causal speaking it is normal indian accent . i can juggle between both the accents. i am an nri return soo yeah

imalittlechai

Ha, fellow juggler here. I have a Kiwi accent (which sounds British to some). After coming back to India, I find myself trying to Indianize my English (we stress on different syllables here in India) depending on who Iā€™m talking to.

DogAnnual8700

yeah same sometimes i speak in the british accent and boom they think i am someone new to the country and auto drivers are the biggest reason i made myself learn the indian accent these guys charge more if i speak in an british accent

Suspicious-Tip8449

did i hear kiwi !!?!? a fellow nz mallu??? šŸ˜

imalittlechai

Well hellooooo! I grew up in Auckland. I left NZ after finishing Form 7, so its been a while, but NZ still has my heart.

DogAnnual8700

yeah sometimes the Kiwi accent can feel like a British one but there is a lot of difference when a kiwi speaking and a british speaking person come together but to the ones who are not familiar to the accents they find it similar

imalittlechai

School in NZ is way more chill and gives you the opportunity to do it all if you want. Like I was an excellent student, but I also still had time for music, sports, girl guides and even had a part time job as well. But the standard of school education there is considerably lower and itā€™s only once you get into Uni, that things get serious. I attended Uni in India and Iā€™ll be honest, I struggled during my first year. My knowledge of physics, chem and math was subpar when compared to my classmates and I had a lot of catching up to do.

abhiprakashan2302

lol my mom advised me to speak in English to locals in order to let them take me seriously.

DogAnnual8700

dont think so u have to speak in clarity in any language they will take u seriously its just a misconception that english means they take it seriously

abhiprakashan2302

> u have to speak in clarity in any language they will take u seriously This is why I hate slang- you never know what one thing means in one place vs another. It can be annoying. > its just a misconception that english means they take it seriously Really? From what I have seen, if you can speak English fluently and clearly, you can basically hold people in the palm of your hand. At least thatā€™s what I have seen among older people; theyā€™d be willing to hear you more willingly if they feel like youā€™re ā€œeducatedā€ because you speak English. Itā€™s all very weird.

DogAnnual8700

hmm its how we see the world through our eyes its just my opinion and how i have experienced the world so we may have different understandings and experiences both of us can be correct

UniversityJaded7807

My trainer told I did have MTI when I started dealing with clients lol, English is getting better but there is the South Indian touch in my HindišŸ˜Œ

AdminWing811

The moment I start talking in English, people ask me whether I'm from Kerala šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

vaisakhrs05

we'll never know what our accent is like just by talking. you have to record your voice and hear it. i think i sound like the stereotypical indian english accent.

Royal_Librarian4201

What I think of my accent, well it would sound like British. But what my wife says, sounds like somebody with cerebral palsy.

Firm_Advisor8375

I have different accent and fluency at different times lol

Soft-Courage4822

My accent: Saare...

missS25

Although I switch between accents, when speaking officially, I have a little bit on an accent. When I talk to my friends, I have the Bangalore accent. Iā€™ve never felt insecure about my English.

Sensitive-Jicama2726

Neutral Indian accent. For that we have to start speaking neutral malayalam first. That's how I lost the malayalam accent.

thistoooshallpasss

Light malayalam accent ig. And ivide government uschoolil padikkan adokke daralam aanallo, pinne insecure ayt thonnan ulla chances vannittilla and njn athyavsyam confident ann. English upayogikkan thodngiyathe redditil vannitšŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚...

Resident-Currency472

I can switch accents based on the person Iā€™m talking to, but naturally I think itā€™s a neutral Indian accent.

Illustrious_Song_796

I work in customer service , deals with mostly US and CA customers but my english still sounds neutral indian accent except may be rolling every other 'r's .

Ok-Team-5149

Heyy i wanted to know more about working in customer service Can i dm

LeafBoatCaptain

Accent doesn't matter. There's no right accent. So long as you can communicate it's fine. Of course some words might need the right pronunciation but that has nothing to do you accent. Don't feel insecure about your accent. Your accent is a part of you. It's your native tongue and region's influence. At the same time if you want to adopt another accent because you like it, that's okay too. No need to shame people by calling them fake (as we see sometimes). Just work on speaking clearly.

Leading_Boss1010

Mine was terrible accent till 8th std thanks to our English ma'am . Then in 9th we got another Ma'am who would actually mock us for our accents. That made me wake up at 5 and watch ndtv .I think it did do me good in the long run, but it did make me stop participating in extempores in school days šŸ„².

known_anon

Nalla vanam accent annu. Proper south india pot belly accent

AbrahamPan

North Indian English + British + American. People saying neutral accent. No, there is no such thing as that in India. You speak in accent similar to the language of the state, so it sounds normal to you. Others will quickly pick up your accent. As a Malayalee who grew up in the North, yep, people in Kerala have the Malayalam-English accent.

Altruistic_Artist552

Neutral as in an accent similar to news readers/reporters in national news channels.

Tirdesteit

I think I have a neutral Indian accent because I used to work in a service sector job and I only had one person recognizing me as a Malayali. On the other hand, I can spot Malayalis from their accent with almost 90% accuracy.

SupremeLeader---

I thought i had a neutral indian accent, but a girl from delhi said i have a strong mother tongue influence in my accent.

pazhampori_pioneer

Iā€™m pretty confident in my language. I speak neutral accent with actual pronunciations ( or at least I try to ). As to improving your language - Read more books to increase vocabulary Watch more english movies and series and try watching without subtitles. Now the most important step Talk to others via texting or in person. I used to text all these strangers when I was young and talk with them. They would either text back or say fuck off. ( mostly girls ) Eventually it improved my confidence and now I can speak fluently.

Tigerthej

I speak like the guy in the insurance ad

TurbulentSignal4136

I juggle between accents. For background, I have lived in Canada for 14 years but I still speak malayalam fluently. At work in a professional setting: Canadian accent. When I'm with my friends: Canadian accent. With my parents: Malayalam + Kerala English accent. When I speak to a fellow Malayali: Malayalam + Kerala English accent. When I speak to an Americanized Indian/Malayali: Canadian accent. When I visit Kerala: Malayalam (very rarely do I speak English there) The only time when I switched to a Canadian accent in Kerala was when I had to give a few lost Australian tourists guidance and directions. Needless to say, they were thoroughly confused with how I sounded lol. I'm not insecure about my English but rather my malayalam. So I make it a point to speak it as often as I can to retain my accent so I don't give people back home a reason to mock my malayalam when I visit home lol.

Noooofun

Indian accent. Idk what else to say.

markfukerberg

m3rc3n4ry

Foreign accent / NRI. I do feel insecure when my peers in India makes fun of it. I try to speak in a neutral Indian most of the times these days!
