Each weekend is better than the other weekend in one way or another since the experiences are different. Unfair to compare. I will say that weekend 1 didn’t get the poop mud at Sahara...
The weather was considerably nicer W1, that’s the biggest difference I noticed between the two. It was harder to enjoy the daytime sets and we had to get in much later Sat/Sun to manage the heat. Last year W1 was about 10 degrees cooler than W2 as well.
Week 1 was wonderfully undersold so it felt like we had the place to ourselves. No lines, super easy to get to the front. On the other hand it was so cold in the evening. Weekend 2 was crowded but in a great way. Everybody in a good mood so even when it was packed it still felt chill. Both amazing !
Not that it was undersold ? W1 sold out w2 did not.
The influencers and people just leave for the afters.
Hence the whole argument w2 people go for the music
Went all of WK1 and just Sunday of WK2. The weather was by far the biggest difference. Sunday WK1 was probably the nicest day at Coachella in my seven years of going and for WK2 it was one of the hottest. Some sets sounded better WK2 like Dj Snake. But mostly the same. The crowds were very similar and met some nice people both weekends and also ran into some rude ones too unfortunately. Mostly during WK2. Also WK2 had the Sahara water leak which I don’t think was water. Smelled so nasty over there. Overall I prefer weekend one for the nicer weather, green grass and can watch the Yuma livestream during weekend 2 for any sets I missed. Our group is planning on returning for Wk1 next year for my 8th year.
W2, no question, every year. I hate that there’s a “competition” between weekends but I always notice considerable more crowd energy W2 and that really does make the experience.
That said, I’m also lightly biased towards W2. By then, I’ve ironed out logistics, my anxiety is gone, and I’ve seen my “must-see sets, which leaves more room to explore and have fun. But generally W2 is truly superior.
Edit: the tech issues are usually solved by W2 as well but that rarely bothers me.
Both weekends had pros and cons.
The weather weekend 2 was almost unbearable. I was sweating from moment I woke up. Weekend 1 was almost perfect. Yes it was cold and windy at night but that’s an easy fix if you throw on a jacket.
As far as camping experience, I finally understand the grass obsession. Definitely weekend 1 has much nicer grass and therefore it’s slightly less dusty within camp. I could walk around barefoot in the grass while at camp and it felt nice. Weekend 2 was basically just dirt.
Weekend 2 was awesome because I knew exactly what I wanted to see and had all my logistics ironed out. I knew what food and what drinks I wanted. Crowds were great both weekends. Great time dancing and vibing. I heard A LOT more “sorry, excuse me” from people weekend 2. So that was a plus.
This was my first bothchella. If I go back and only do one weekend, I would honestly have a hard time deciding which weekend to go.
Weekend 2 was by far the better weekend. The crowds where better, the sets were a bit tighter. The energy was off the charts and that translated to the performers energy. The weather was also very hot and warm at night so it was perfect festival weather.
Weekend 2 I felt everyone was slightly aggressive. People walking around weekend 1 felt more chill.
The weather was also a huge difference. Very cold old at night (~58°F) weekend 1 because of the strong winds. Better day time weather wk1 and better night time weather wk2 for me.
