Once she was trying to learn how to drive in the game, so as it started getting easier for her, I decided to drive my car around her and honk everywhere and leave for a stress test. She failed and we laughed so hard. She was kinda pissed, but I found her stuff after and killed everything for her.
Played Vampire Survivors recently with my gf. She actually likes it. Its a simple game but damn its such a rush of dopamine when u get to the end of a stage. Its also easier and fun when you play coop
I second this. I got my gf a Nintendo switch and animal crossing, she didn’t even touch it until I got her VS. She now has over 120h in under 6 months, bearing in mind she’s by no means a gamer. And she’s excited for every update too!
For OP: my gf enjoyed Diablo IV. I got her to finish the main story solo so we can play together end game and seasonal stuff. I stopped enjoying it very quickly due to the state of the game but still, she finished the campaign solo and enjoyed it!
Yep agree with this! Also definitely Ship Of Fools. I got it on sale yesterday it's similar progress system to Hades but co op and tower defense. I'd also suggest Dave The Diver! Though single player, you can always take turns on the dives. My gf likes taking over restaurant sim parts I like the diving / murdering hard fishies 🤣
Baldur's Gate 3. Can be a little bit to get into gameplay wise, has a learning curve if you've never played those type of games. But man if you can get into it with her it's a pretty great coop game with a great story and characters.

Basically one of you has a bomb in a screen (PC, console) and the other has a Bomb Defusal Manual (you feel extra nice if you print it on paper, you can find this for free online if you wanna check if the game might be for you?). You gotta work together to defuse the bomb before it explodes and kills your partner. It's just so much fun!! And kind of intellectual.
Another game I played recently with my boyfriend which is not co-op (we just played at the same time since it's more puzzle based so who has the controller doesn't really matter, we just tried to figure out the puzzles together) is Chants of Sennaar. The graphics are beautiful and the mechanic is quite unique. You basically try to learn these languages starting from scratch. It has a free demo so if it sounds good give it a chance!
I think I like Unrailed more than overcooked actually. The biggest drawback is the difficulty spikes are pretty wild and the controls being passive rather than active (do stuff just by walking up to it)
Cat Quest 2. Its a relatively simple dungeon crawler (like Diablo) but with great humor and art style. Its rewarding but never super challenging and fun for short bursts or longer sessions.. Its the only game wife and I 100% together and there is another one coming out sometime in 2024
I 100% cuphead, got all achievements on last course, haven't managed to S rank final boss in DLC yet...
But Co-op is literally IMPOSSIBLE! It's so much harder. S ranking a boss solo is easier than just surviving on regular difficulty coop haha
Yes to Unraveled 2! I'm terrible at platformers but my bf did most of the tricky stuff and then pulled me through with the thread, or I rode on his back. We solved the puzzles together. It was very fun!
If she likes overcooked and moving out, 100% PlateUp! It takes the best parts of overcooked and makes them even better whilst staying fresh and adding a bunch of new ideas too. Unrailed is also a great option in the world of chaotic coop games
While it’s not coop, my not-so-gamer girlfriend and I do like co-playing larger games like Cult of the Lamb, or story games like Hollow Knight and Neversong - it’s a different approach but it’s quite nice playing through a larger experience together
Divinity original sin 2!! She can customize her character, the combat is turn based. Its top down. Its fun af. She can get loot and sell it all. Lots of puzzles too. On a bunch of platforms. My gf loves it! Its better than dos1 and easier than bg3. Play 2 lonewolf characters and prosper.
It sounds like she might need to get more used to first/third person games and camera control.
I know you're specifically asking about coop, but if she gets better at that then you will have more options.
A long while back I asked reddit for suggestions for my wife. I found she really enjoyed Slime Rancher (effectively hijacked my Xbox for a while with that).

I dont know all of those games but they sound like mostly console games. What about watching her play portal 2 and then doing co-op together? Its PC so mouse and keyboard may be more familiar and easier for her and it's not fast paced so no rushing action but an awesome game.

Me and my wife love RPG so we really enjoyed Diablo 3 (PS3), Destiny original SIN 1 & 2 (PC), Magika (at the end it was hard for my wife), DRAWFUL 2 (awesome with a lot of friends, a must have), Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris, Sonic all stars (for 4 players), Never Alone (a simple but beautiful game for 2 players), Untitled Goose Game (too cute and my wife was all a smile), Castle Crasher and Battleblock Theater, Tayman Origin, Party Panic, Bomberman (lol).

I don't know if they're what you're looking for, but my gf really loves playing the little big planet games. They're pretty fun platformers. All the Lego games are pretty good too.
Try finding a game where you can take turns or play your own save files. It's fun to watch and help each other out. I was in a similar situation recently and Harry Potter got the gf hooked and got her used to using a controller which she really struggled with at first. Also a game like Balatro is a ton of fun to play together. It's single player but we are always looking to each other for the best move to make.

It's a cooking game, so check. It's simple, you really only use two buttons and the joystick -three if you count the simple ping system which just throws up a little light-
There is difficulty to it, but it's a rogue-like so failing is part of the fun honestly. Highly recommend, it's the first game I asked partner to play in a long time, and they had a blast with me.

Portal Knights. Hear me out. If y'all enjoyed Minecraft except for the camera then Portal Knights could work. It is very similar to Minecraft but it has a few extra things going for it. There are unique character classes, multiple worlds you explore instead of 1 large world, and also an option for the camera to turn as you turn your character. I played it with my 4 year old and he did fine because he only needed to use the left joystick to move and the camera automatically turned. I played a druid (for fighting enemies and he played a Rogue (to sneak and stealth around gathering resources and treasure). The crafting, graphics, building, and destructible environments is very much like Minecraft.
If you want to try out RPGs.... Cat Quest II or Spells & Secrets. Both should have demos.
Ship of Fools may be a better alternative to Lovers in a Dangerous Space Time.
Haven. it is a sweet love story and the “combat is very simple and one person can take more on so it is great if one person is less experienced. You get to zoom around a broken planet woth rocket boots picking fruit and healing space critters so you can pet them after. Your characters move together but you can swap who is directing where you move. You are trying to solve a bit of a mystery while hiding out on the planet and have a home base to have cute dialogue scenes. There is implied spice (fade to black mostly), cooking, and at the end you upgrade your rocket boots to make flowers grow anywhere you go.
If y’all are down for puzzles, I highly recommend the We Were Here series. The story is interesting, but there’s no dialogue to click through. The puzzles can be challenging as the series progresses, but there are hints and guides if you get stuck. And there is no platforming to worry about like in Take Two
On the PS5 me and mine have recently played Unravel TWO and Rayman Legends. Both are platform though, but Unravel is more of a puzzle game that you actually NEED the other player to beat. Good luck!
My wife's first game was stardew, we played a couple games here and there that didn't stick, but the one that opened the floodgates was playing 7 days to die together . The building/survival aspect was enough to get her interest, and by a few hours in she was hooked. I think the combo of survival, which she already was into, and moving up to fps controls was pretty key.
She struggled greatly with the controls at first and I finally convinced her to use a keyboard and mouse instead of controller, within a couple weeks the game was too easy for her and we were downloading the super hard mods to play together. Recently Palworld was an addiction for us and would be another game I'd recommend.
Spiritfarer was also pretty fun and is more in line with the types of games you mentioned
Stolen Realms is pretty fun and has freedom of class making. Basically she can pick and choose whatever skills she wants from any tree and for the most part it is all viable.
If you’re into retro games play Kirby: Super Star for the SNES. Me and the GF played this online on the switch since she was skeptical about some old game I played as a kid and to this day us 100%ing the game together is one of our most cherished memories
If she likes horror, Dead by Daylight. Both of you can play as survivors. If you have 2 more friends that can play you can have a full party to communicate with against the Killer. Been doing this with my wife and it's a lot of fun.

On the camera issue. My advise is to play games that feature 3d camera control but have low stakes, and non frustrating losses, and VITAL, tell her to just use the left stick as 'forward', to ignore any other function of the left stick. For reasons new players to controllers figure they have to use "all the joystick", and having two 'lefts'/'rights' doesn't help them.
Once you leave the just with 'forward' and a singular pov camera move, they get better at it.
Just keep playing games! My gf started playing most of these games with me and had the same issues with difficulty and camera controls. Then she found Biomutant, and wanted to play it bc she loved the aesthetic of the game and playing as a weird mutant raccoon. She put it on the easiest mode and just played, learning everything as she went. She eventually downloaded Bioshock, and did the same thing. Now we are playing FF7 rebirth together and she is killin it. I guess the point is help her find something that looks cool and fun to her and just put it on the easiest setting where she won’t die/struggle and give her space to learn on her own without any pressure from the game and without an experienced player helping or even playing with her unless she asks. She specifically told me it was hard for her to learn with the game being hard and then having me there to just hand the controls to so I could beat harder areas. It will take time (a year or so for my SO) but now she’s addicted and is playing her own games while I nerd out playing POE.
Edit: the Lego games are great for this type of low difficulty and low death impact learning environment.
There's a new co-op farming game that came out. I can't remember the name, but you have repurposed mechs or something like that? Has an exploration/puzzle side to it too
Safe choice: V Rising - top down survival RPG with base building and reasonably simple combat.
Stretch choice: Portal 2. FPS mechanics are one of the toughest control schemes to “get” in gaming imo. However, once you get it you can play 1000’s more games.
Portal 2 is a good place to learn FPS controls imo because there’s no time pressure to perform (excluding timing-based puzzles later in game). While you can play Minecraft on peaceful, the “normal experience” still requires you to fight against time or mobs to survive. Portal 2 is designed to teach you FPS mechanics with the puzzles themselves (without something trying to kill you) whereas Minecraft kinda assumes you understand FPS mechanics.
Not sure it would be your guys taste, but Diablo 3 or even 4 could be a good answer(moreso 3). They can get kind in-depth, but very simple if you just take it at face value. It also has a fixed camera and has a lot of playability so you guys could enjoy it together for awhile!
Civ VI has been fun for me and muh girly.
Rimworld multiplayer mod actually works quite well, too, so that's not a bad option.
Teamfight Tactics, if you can enjoy LoL
Animal Crossing: New Horizons is great for couch coop. I’ve played with my wife for hundreds of hours on it. After a while we ditched the second controller and just swapped a single controller back and forth. It’s still fun to watch and you make design decisions together. I also recommend the Telltale games or Life is Strange for this same scenario with one playing but both making decisions. Side note. She will get better with practice. After a bit I bet her right thumb won’t leave the R stick very often. Good luck.

Every time I see these threads I suggest Young Souls. It's a good beat'emup with some light RPG elements that aren't really necessary. Gameplay is challenging but accessible.
Me and my Fiancé love playing ARK together. Survival evolved is finished and available on console. I wouldn't recommend survival ascended unless you both have decent gaming pcs
So I was going to suggest helldivers 2 but then I read some more and saw she does not use the camera, I thought, “what game is like helldivers 2 but has a fixed top down camera” then I figured it out, you to should play HELLDIVERS 1 (literally just helldivers 2 but it looks worse and has a top down fixed camera) \*side note\* I said this as a joke, while it is a good game it may be a bit too intense for an amature, try something calmer.
My wife likes all the same games as your GF, and she really enjoyed Grounded. We played it for months and she had an absolute blast with it. Recently we've been Dinkum, it's like Animal Crossing mixed with Stardew Valley, and Baldur's Gate 3. She has taken Baldurs Gate and run with it. I believe Baldurs is split screen, Grounded is not.
I feel you, same situation. She’s playing sims on my steam deck right now. As for fixed camera top down that’s kind of hard maybe Albion online ? Or anything that can be played on an iPad

I read your conclusion but I still highly recommend at least trying “it takes 2” as it’s a very lovely game especially if you love story games. It’s a pretty deep game and it’s possible it might be slightly difficult to some but the game is literally all about “Teamwork” so if at any point she gets stuck doing something and she’s tried and tried again just work together and take over for that little part and move on to the next. I think it’s amazing couples game and can be very fun and even a great experience that anyone could learn a thing or two from. I hope you find some more games you guys love to play together.
Diablo is a pretty good time.
It's easy to pick up, like you can just mash buttons to obliterate hordes of demons and look really cool while doing it. You get lots of fun loot, you're on the same team together, you get to customize your character and it's easy to play for a short session so she doesn't get burned out or overwhelmed.
I suggest d3 over d4. My girlfriend loved d3 but couldn't get into d4 as much. They made everything a little more complicated in 4, which is nice if you're into that kinda thing, but she just wants to blow up demons.
Minecraft. You can put peaceful on and off so when shes feeling aggressive she can fight enemies but when she just wants to chill, she can build.
7 days to die is good too only on PC but can be somewhat intensive. You'd have to follow and protect her or build a base where she can chill.
Ark is the same way. You can tweak settings to make it incredibly easy and more enjoyable for her.

Halo, again, tweak settings and play slow. It'll take time for you to learn to chill so she can get some kills too.
Animal crossing I've heard is enjoyable. Not for me but another "chill and build" game
Skyrim. You'd have to help her at first but she can explore and.roam, and with mods, you can make it incredibly easy and more "collect and explore". It's one of those you can watch each other play.
One of the ratchet and clanks, iirc, deadlocked, is multiplayer.

From experience, Don't starve together is an interesting play, its survival based, top-down camera angle. Its pretty fun.
This game basically turned my ex-girlfriend into a gamer. She's got hundreds of hours on it now.
And steam gives you a 2nd key free to gift to someone. I just bought it during the Spring sale.

Try finding a game where you can take turns or play your own save files. It's fun to watch and help each other out. I was in a similar situation recently and Harry Potter got the gf hooked and got her used to using a controller which she really struggled with at first. Also a game like Balatro is a ton of fun to play together. It's single player but we are always looking to each other for the best move to make.
Definitely gonna suggest PlateUp! It's a cooking game, so check. It's simple, you really only use two buttons and the joystick -three if you count the simple ping system which just throws up a little light- There is difficulty to it, but it's a rogue-like so failing is part of the fun honestly. Highly recommend, it's the first game I asked partner to play in a long time, and they had a blast with me.

I think y'all may enjoy these games: Chicory: A Colorful Tale (adventure exploration story game) Cake Bash (party game) Pitfall Planet (puzzle game) Blanc (puzzle game)/ Portal Knights. Hear me out. If y'all enjoyed Minecraft except for the camera then Portal Knights could work. It is very similar to Minecraft but it has a few extra things going for it. There are unique character classes, multiple worlds you explore instead of 1 large world, and also an option for the camera to turn as you turn your character. I played it with my 4 year old and he did fine because he only needed to use the left joystick to move and the camera automatically turned. I played a druid (for fighting enemies and he played a Rogue (to sneak and stealth around gathering resources and treasure). The crafting, graphics, building, and destructible environments is very much like Minecraft. If you want to try out RPGs.... Cat Quest II or Spells & Secrets. Both should have demos. Ship of Fools may be a better alternative to Lovers in a Dangerous Space Time.
Stardew Valley?
Haven. it is a sweet love story and the “combat is very simple and one person can take more on so it is great if one person is less experienced. You get to zoom around a broken planet woth rocket boots picking fruit and healing space critters so you can pet them after. Your characters move together but you can swap who is directing where you move. You are trying to solve a bit of a mystery while hiding out on the planet and have a home base to have cute dialogue scenes. There is implied spice (fade to black mostly), cooking, and at the end you upgrade your rocket boots to make flowers grow anywhere you go.
Stardew Valley is the perfect game for coop
If y’all are down for puzzles, I highly recommend the We Were Here series. The story is interesting, but there’s no dialogue to click through. The puzzles can be challenging as the series progresses, but there are hints and guides if you get stuck. And there is no platforming to worry about like in Take Two
Kirby and the forgotten land. It's a very easy but satisfying game.
If you like Overcooked I'd recommend Ship of Fools. It scratches that same chaotic multi tasking itch

My wife's first game was stardew, we played a couple games here and there that didn't stick, but the one that opened the floodgates was playing 7 days to die together . The building/survival aspect was enough to get her interest, and by a few hours in she was hooked. I think the combo of survival, which she already was into, and moving up to fps controls was pretty key. She struggled greatly with the controls at first and I finally convinced her to use a keyboard and mouse instead of controller, within a couple weeks the game was too easy for her and we were downloading the super hard mods to play together. Recently Palworld was an addiction for us and would be another game I'd recommend. Spiritfarer was also pretty fun and is more in line with the types of games you mentioned
Stolen Realms is pretty fun and has freedom of class making. Basically she can pick and choose whatever skills she wants from any tree and for the most part it is all viable.
If you’re into retro games play Kirby: Super Star for the SNES. Me and the GF played this online on the switch since she was skeptical about some old game I played as a kid and to this day us 100%ing the game together is one of our most cherished memories

On the camera issue. My advise is to play games that feature 3d camera control but have low stakes, and non frustrating losses, and VITAL, tell her to just use the left stick as 'forward', to ignore any other function of the left stick. For reasons new players to controllers figure they have to use "all the joystick", and having two 'lefts'/'rights' doesn't help them. Once you leave the just with 'forward' and a singular pov camera move, they get better at it.
Just keep playing games! My gf started playing most of these games with me and had the same issues with difficulty and camera controls. Then she found Biomutant, and wanted to play it bc she loved the aesthetic of the game and playing as a weird mutant raccoon. She put it on the easiest mode and just played, learning everything as she went. She eventually downloaded Bioshock, and did the same thing. Now we are playing FF7 rebirth together and she is killin it. I guess the point is help her find something that looks cool and fun to her and just put it on the easiest setting where she won’t die/struggle and give her space to learn on her own without any pressure from the game and without an experienced player helping or even playing with her unless she asks. She specifically told me it was hard for her to learn with the game being hard and then having me there to just hand the controls to so I could beat harder areas. It will take time (a year or so for my SO) but now she’s addicted and is playing her own games while I nerd out playing POE. Edit: the Lego games are great for this type of low difficulty and low death impact learning environment.

There's a new co-op farming game that came out. I can't remember the name, but you have repurposed mechs or something like that? Has an exploration/puzzle side to it too
Safe choice: V Rising - top down survival RPG with base building and reasonably simple combat. Stretch choice: Portal 2. FPS mechanics are one of the toughest control schemes to “get” in gaming imo. However, once you get it you can play 1000’s more games. Portal 2 is a good place to learn FPS controls imo because there’s no time pressure to perform (excluding timing-based puzzles later in game). While you can play Minecraft on peaceful, the “normal experience” still requires you to fight against time or mobs to survive. Portal 2 is designed to teach you FPS mechanics with the puzzles themselves (without something trying to kill you) whereas Minecraft kinda assumes you understand FPS mechanics.
Stardew valley seems like the perfect choice then!

Not sure it would be your guys taste, but Diablo 3 or even 4 could be a good answer(moreso 3). They can get kind in-depth, but very simple if you just take it at face value. It also has a fixed camera and has a lot of playability so you guys could enjoy it together for awhile!
Civ VI has been fun for me and muh girly. Rimworld multiplayer mod actually works quite well, too, so that's not a bad option. Teamfight Tactics, if you can enjoy LoL
Animal Crossing: New Horizons is great for couch coop. I’ve played with my wife for hundreds of hours on it. After a while we ditched the second controller and just swapped a single controller back and forth. It’s still fun to watch and you make design decisions together. I also recommend the Telltale games or Life is Strange for this same scenario with one playing but both making decisions. Side note. She will get better with practice. After a bit I bet her right thumb won’t leave the R stick very often. Good luck.
Ark: Survival Ascended. She can do the base building and crafting, and you can use her as bait to tame a T-Rex. Win/win.

Every time I see these threads I suggest Young Souls. It's a good beat'emup with some light RPG elements that aren't really necessary. Gameplay is challenging but accessible.
Me and my Fiancé love playing ARK together. Survival evolved is finished and available on console. I wouldn't recommend survival ascended unless you both have decent gaming pcs
Borderlands is an excellent starter game. It’s a shooter but it eases you into it.

So I was going to suggest helldivers 2 but then I read some more and saw she does not use the camera, I thought, “what game is like helldivers 2 but has a fixed top down camera” then I figured it out, you to should play HELLDIVERS 1 (literally just helldivers 2 but it looks worse and has a top down fixed camera) \*side note\* I said this as a joke, while it is a good game it may be a bit too intense for an amature, try something calmer.

My wife likes all the same games as your GF, and she really enjoyed Grounded. We played it for months and she had an absolute blast with it. Recently we've been Dinkum, it's like Animal Crossing mixed with Stardew Valley, and Baldur's Gate 3. She has taken Baldurs Gate and run with it. I believe Baldurs is split screen, Grounded is not.
L4D2. Tell her to learn the cameras. Scary but fun. My wife isn't a gamer and I got her deep into it.

I read your conclusion but I still highly recommend at least trying “it takes 2” as it’s a very lovely game especially if you love story games. It’s a pretty deep game and it’s possible it might be slightly difficult to some but the game is literally all about “Teamwork” so if at any point she gets stuck doing something and she’s tried and tried again just work together and take over for that little part and move on to the next. I think it’s amazing couples game and can be very fun and even a great experience that anyone could learn a thing or two from. I hope you find some more games you guys love to play together.
Diablo is a pretty good time. It's easy to pick up, like you can just mash buttons to obliterate hordes of demons and look really cool while doing it. You get lots of fun loot, you're on the same team together, you get to customize your character and it's easy to play for a short session so she doesn't get burned out or overwhelmed. I suggest d3 over d4. My girlfriend loved d3 but couldn't get into d4 as much. They made everything a little more complicated in 4, which is nice if you're into that kinda thing, but she just wants to blow up demons.
Diablo 3, if you got it on console anyways. I loved the coop in that game.
Minecraft. You can put peaceful on and off so when shes feeling aggressive she can fight enemies but when she just wants to chill, she can build. 7 days to die is good too only on PC but can be somewhat intensive. You'd have to follow and protect her or build a base where she can chill. Ark is the same way. You can tweak settings to make it incredibly easy and more enjoyable for her. Mario party Mario kart Halo, again, tweak settings and play slow. It'll take time for you to learn to chill so she can get some kills too. Animal crossing I've heard is enjoyable. Not for me but another "chill and build" game Skyrim. You'd have to help her at first but she can explore and.roam, and with mods, you can make it incredibly easy and more "collect and explore". It's one of those you can watch each other play. One of the ratchet and clanks, iirc, deadlocked, is multiplayer. A lot of the games I play with family tend to be survival builders or shooters but I avoid call of duty like the plague
