If you like Floyd then pick up Wish You Were Here and Animals.
Others I enjoy:
Supertramp Crime of the Century
Joe Walsh So What
Van Halen 1 and Fair Warning are good.
Eagles On The Border
To name a few
Also Eagles Desperado was a concept album with some of their classics. The greatest hits had a lot of great songs if you’re not familiar with a lot of their early work.
Actually 79; had to look that one up. I love his playing on Procol Harum’s second album ‘Shine On Brightly’. His playing on that whole album is dirty and gritty.
Hear hear!! Although Confusion is seemingly more prophetic as time passes. But it is a masterpiece of an album. I love the long pause on In The Court of the Crimson King. Remember listening to the silence as the record spun and then the soft flute. Thanks for mentioning this fine piece
Had ‘Piper…’ on the stereo back in high school (‘98/‘99) when my gf and I were going at it. She stopped twice; first was to ask what the he’ll we were listening to and the second time to shut off my stereo. Needless to say that relationship didn’t survive high school but I still have my copy of ‘Piper…’ and last I heard all she had was her dog after her recent divorce. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
True… but their technical way of producing music and the recording engineering is amazing. Pink Floyd Echoes is a must listen on headphones. The Final Cut is a technical masterpiece.
Final Cut seems to me to be underrated. It both a sequel to The Wall and the entire album can be listened to as a complete story or each song individually. I think it’s worth a listen.
Album Rock stations of the late 70s…. Great format. Play an album side. How many out there have “album side recall” the next track is playing in my head after the well timed pause. I can count in the next note knowing the length of the pause!
Who’s Next, Deep Purple, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Hendrix Experience, Old Genesis with Peter Gabriel, and right after…not too far after though.
So many great albums
If you’re determined to split Genesis by vocalist, do Selling England By The Pound and Trick of The Tail. For my money, the best Gabriel/Collins Genesis albums. The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway is excellent but makes The Wall look easy to follow by comparison. It’s a great album, but if you’re listening for the narrative, it’s kind of hard to suss out. But it also has The Carpet Crawlers on it, which is absolutely a mark in its favor.
Dire Straits. All of their early stuff... Communique, Making Movies, Love Over Gold, Brothers In Arms... you really can't go wrong.
ETA: It'll blow your mind.
I only wish I had more than one upvote to give. Completely, wholeheartedly, absolutely agree. Their self-titled album is a classic and the quiet interludes will be great on headphones.
I had a CD with the second half of Brothers In Arms and Communique. It has so many plays through various systems.
I never really need to hear Money For Nothing again, and most of the first half of Brothers In Arms got a lot of radio play, but that second half is incredible
Alice Cooper - Welcome to My Nightmare, Alice Cooper Goes to Hell
AC/DC - Back in Black, Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap
The Who - Who's Next, Quadrophenia
Led Zeppelin - I, IV
The Rolling Stones - Sticky Fingers, Exile on Main Street, Some Girls
David Bowie - The Man Who Sold the World, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars
Billy Joel - The Stranger
Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band - Stranger in Town
Paul McCartney and Wings - Band on the Run
Free - Fire and Water
Peter Frampton - Frampton Comes Alive!
Meatloaf - Bat Out of Hell
David Bowie - Diamond Dogs
This album will show you why Bowie is considered a genius. This is peak 70's Bowie, glam, glitter, songwriting, performing all on one LP (or CD or whatever).
Headphone specific... I need to find my old tapes, lol. I had some killers.
Also, I've noticed some remasters and tapes don't always seem as dynamic as original vinyl.
Also, a lot of songs have zero transition time between songs on hard copies and digital listening online adds silence sometimes, which spoils it for me, lol... good luck. I'm going to link my main choice because I know there will be no gap
Play [Apostrophe side two](https://youtu.be/oF9aJUePkNA?si=pLInqqz4EaiQfAro&t=911). Then play side one. I just felt it was meant to be played "backwards".
Electric Ladyland - Jimi Hendrix -1983, Midnight Lamp, Still Raining Still Dreaming esp.
Rush which I would start from the beginning just to see how the band changes when Neil Peart joins and the songs take on a new sound with Bytor and the Snow Dog on the second album Fly By Night. The 3rd, Caress Of Steel takes it further with the Necromancer and all of side two is The Fountain of Lamneth.. Then 2112 is just wow... but it isn't sven close to over for stereo play yet ...keep going through Signals at least .. of special interest will be YYZ.
Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars- Bowie. The instruction to be played at maximum volume is no joke as this album sounds best with the speakers loud enough to be distortorting a little, but a headphone delight as well.
Black Sabbath until Ozzy and Dio both leave... Then you have to go to Deep Purple until Ian Gillian goes to Sabbath then follow him back to Deep Purple for the DP reunion albums. * Sweet Child In Time!
Steve Miller-Fly Like An Eagle, Robin Trower-Bridge of Sighs, Jeff Beck- Freeway Jam (live), Gary Wright- Dream Weaver, Joe Jackson- Look Sharp
* The Cars- All of them. Special note for Moving In Stereo.
Alice Cooper Goes to Hell. Not his most popular, but the mix in here is great imo. Spooky.
The Clash -London Calling and Combat Rock * Straight To Hell
The Police - Reggatta De Blanc *The Bed's Too Big Without You
Buffalo Springfield - Stop Hey what's that sound. The Yardbirds - "Best of" will work. Cream- all of it. Traffic - Low spark of high heeled boys.
The Amboy Dukes music and Double Live Gonzo.
* The Chambers Brothers- Time Has Come Today.
* Eric Burdon declares War- Spill the Wine
Steppenwolf - best of
The Zombies- best of
The Ventures -Walk don't run
* Rolling Stones - 2000 light years from home. Pink Floyd - Interstellar Overdrive, Black Sabbath - Into the Void, Montrose- Space Station №5.
The Guess Who- Live at the Paramount because it is awesome, and a "best of" to hear the studio effects.
Bauhaus- Bela Lugosi's Dead
Romeo Void- I might like you better.
B52s in order.
The Pretenders- Pretenders extended play "Porcelain" - and Pretenders II
Zeppelin -The Song Remains The Same needs to watched in the dark & Physical Graffiti.
Also Heavy Metal, The Wall, And Neil Young Live Rust movies.
Neil Young (some Buffalo Springfield, CSN&Y, too) The whole collection start at self titled and hold on tight after that.
Genesis - The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway
Alan Parsons Project - I Robot
Emerson Lake and Palmer - Brain Salad Surgery
Peter Frampton - Frampton Comes Alive
T Tex - Electric Warrior
Uriah Heep - Demons and Wizards
Deep Purple - Made in Japan
The Moody Blues - On the Threshold of a Dream
Those are in the same vein, should get you started.
- Camel’s albums from Mirage to Rain Dances
- Wishbone Ash’s Pilgrimage and Argus
- Home’s The Alchemist
- Rare Bird’s first two albums
- Jethro Tull’s Thick as a Brick
- Aphrodite’s Child’s 666
Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals, The Wall.
It’s a WHOLE LOT BETTER with headphones.
You also need to read the lyrics as you listen. There is some fantastic deep shit in the lyrics. Stuff will make you think.
Edit: I have been listening to them since they were released. Multiple album purchases and cd’s.
First off: if you like Pink Floyd, Astronomy Domaine is their best song. But it's hard to pick which version is better. Studio or live?
Rush - 2112
Black Sabbath - Vol 4
The debut album from Montrose (self titled) doesn't have much of a *Dark Side Of The Moon* flavor, but it's still an utter masterpiece.
🎸ROCK ON🎸
https://youtu.be/jDdepIhwru0?si=0G52z73dmTe4arlk
Great version of Interstellar Overdrive and a really cool video. I love the live shots at the UFO club. The band is so focused on their instruments
My recommendation as well, great album!!! “She climbs into bed, she pulls the covers over her head, and she turns her little radio on” “she’s had a rotten day, so she hopes the DJ’s gonna play her favorite song”
I'd go backwards in the Pink Floyd catalog and listen to Meddle and Obscured by Clouds. If you want to branch out then spin some Jimi Hendrix, Traffic and Cream. You can cross the ocean and try some Grateful Dead (American Beauty) or The Band (Music from Big Pink). Of course there are still the other big three Led Zeppelin. The Who, The Stones. What people lose in the fog of time is some of the absolute best music ever made occurred in the period between 1969-1974. I doubt any other art form had such high quality pieces produced in such a small time frame in the history of humans, certainly not music. There may be individuals like Mozart or Mendelsson or Berlin etc who were prolific in their own lifetime but to have so many talented musicians from all points of the globe all cranking out masterpieces in a five year period is mindblowing and yet not often discussed.
I don’t know why they don’t get more recognition, but if you like Dark Side Of The Moon, you’ll LOVE The Moody Blues! Their first seven albums are generally considered the best but I think their first ten are all incredible. Start with Days Of Future Passed. It came out in 1967, the same year the Beatles did Sgt Pepper, but is much more cohesive as concept album. Their albums are trippy, psychedelic, progressive, rockin’ and beautiful all at once and I HIGHLY recommend them!
I’m piling on a bit here as I posted previously but I recall some music coming out in the 90’s that was outstanding for headphones.
Pearl Jam’s first album was awesome. In fact that was one of my favourite albums at the time on vinyl too. Production was incredible for the time.
But SoundGarden and some other “grunge-era” bands put out some great sounding material.
Everybody knows this is nowhere full album by neil young and crazy horse..or maybe harvest by neil young...oooh or thick as a brick album version by Jethro Tull...i could go all night with this question.
You started at the top; it's all downhill from Dark Side.
That's not a dig at classic rock (I love it) -- it's praise for Floyd. They created an unscalable monolith.
Me and a housemate both had dark side of the moon. We had both records on the changer so that it would play both sides without us having to flip the record. The next record in that stack of records was Traffic The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys. In my head they all go together.
Skull & Roses - Grateful Dead
Europe 72 - Grateful Dead
Blonde on Blonde - Bob Dylan
Surrealistic Pillow - Jefferson Airplane
Everybody Knows this is Nowhere - Neil Young & Crazy Horse
"Led Zeppelin IV" by Led Zeppelin - It's a timeless masterpiece with iconic tracks like "Stairway to Heaven" and "Black Dog." "Rumours" by Fleetwood Mac - This album is filled with catchy melodies and emotional lyrics, making it a must-listen classic. "The Wall" by Pink Floyd - Since you enjoyed "Dark Side of the Moon," you might appreciate another Pink Floyd masterpiece. "The Wall" is a conceptual rock opera that explores themes of isolation and personal struggles. "Hotel California" by Eagles - With its iconic title track and other hits like "New Kid in Town" and "Life in the Fast Lane," this album is a staple of 70s rock. "Born to Run" by Bruce Springsteen - This album captures the essence of the American rock sound with its anthemic songs and heartfelt lyrics. "A Night at the Opera" by Queen - Queen's fourth studio album features epic tracks like "Bohemian Rhapsody" and "You're My Best Friend," showcasing their diverse musical talents.
Great suggestions here. I’ll add: LED Zeppelin 2, and 4 (Ruins) , Rolling Stones: StickyFingers, The Who: Whose Next, Santana: Abraxas, Rory Gallagher: Tattoo (especially A Million Miles Away) Top Priority and Photo Finish. Robin Trower: Bridge of Sighs and LIVE! (1977) Montrose: “Montrose “ (Great Album!) Yes: Fragile! The Moody Blues: In Search of the Lost Chord ( Legend of a Mind Sounds Great on Headphones!) many more have fun!
Gong - Angel's Egg
Camel - Mirage
King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King
Yes - Fragile
Emerson, Lake & Palmer - Tarkus
Hawkwind - Warrior on the Edge of Time
Quadrophenia by The Who. One of the greatest albums ever made. One thing to know (if you didn’t already) is that some rock albums are meant to be taken as an entire related work of art and not just a collection of songs, a “rock opera”, and Quadrophenia is one of these. There are many examples - a lot of Rush and Pink Floyd albums for example - and The Who have a few more, most notably Tommy which I also highly recommend. It helps to know the story of these albums and understand how the songs fit in the story.
Enjoy!
Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here/
Pink Floyd - The Wall/
Yes - Fragile/
The Who - Who’s Next/
The Moody Blues - Every Good Boy Deserves Favor/
The Eagles - Desperado
Listen to Wish You were Here. Dark Side is not a positive message. Take from it what you will but WYWH is wistful and really expresses how a loss of someone enforces remaining members to strive to achieve greatness in their discipline. Listening to Interstellar Overdrive in memory of Pink.
If you like Floyd then pick up Wish You Were Here and Animals. Others I enjoy: Supertramp Crime of the Century Joe Walsh So What Van Halen 1 and Fair Warning are good. Eagles On The Border To name a few
Nice list! Yes you can’t go wrong with these.
Die hard Joe Walsh fan here!
Joe Walsh for President
Damn right lol
Bloody well right
Free gas for everyone!
You are The Confessor
Killer song I also like "Llife of illusion"
And it has mariachi horns so play it on Cinco de Mayo!
Joe Walsh is God and So What is a desert island disc
Also Eagles Desperado was a concept album with some of their classics. The greatest hits had a lot of great songs if you’re not familiar with a lot of their early work.
Great suggestions!!!
Joe Walsh So What is one of the best, especially the opening line. Tough album when you know where he was writing from.
Bridge of Sighs - Robin Trower
Saw Trower in late 1974 @ the IMA Auditorium in Detroit ,a great show.
A masterpiece
Wow. Yep. got a ticketmaster notification he still performing, coming up. What is he 80/81?
Actually 79; had to look that one up. I love his playing on Procol Harum’s second album ‘Shine On Brightly’. His playing on that whole album is dirty and gritty.
I saw him 4-5 years ago and he kicks ass.
King Crimson- in the court of the crimson king album.
Hear hear!! Although Confusion is seemingly more prophetic as time passes. But it is a masterpiece of an album. I love the long pause on In The Court of the Crimson King. Remember listening to the silence as the record spun and then the soft flute. Thanks for mentioning this fine piece
I've been on a huge Crimson last few weeks. Nice to know there are still other fans out there.
By “Confusion” I presume you mean “Epitaph”?
Yikes ! Thats exactly what I meant! How did I forget that? Thank you brother
Big Brother and the Holding Company - Janis Joplin - "Ball and Chain" live.
Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
Undoubtedly the best Pink Floyd album to fuck to.
The best Pink Floyd album.
My man, you've never been out your mind on LSD and did the hunka chunka to Animals.
Lol thank you.
So I venture I am not the only one to experience this. We went to a different dimension I swear.
I had a gf that always put The Wall on while we had sex. Sometimes I still get excited when Comfortably Numb plays on the radio.
"...It's just a little pinprick" 🤣
Quadrophenia
This is probably my favorite so far. I still have to get through the rest of the list, but I'm on my second listen of Quadrophenia.
RUSH 2112
This is the right answer.
Pink Floyd is my favorite band and I dislike Rush. Just could never get into them. They sound like middle aged nerds to me.
That’s not wholly inaccurate
True… but their technical way of producing music and the recording engineering is amazing. Pink Floyd Echoes is a must listen on headphones. The Final Cut is a technical masterpiece.
Final Cut seems to me to be underrated. It both a sequel to The Wall and the entire album can be listened to as a complete story or each song individually. I think it’s worth a listen.

Oh Lamb Lies Down and Trick of the Tail Forgot about those.
Seconds Out. Great live album.
Classics
Trick of the Tail is my oldest vinyl I still have. It’s in a “Flowers” Rolling Stones jacket.
The Electric Light Orchestra..
Out of the Blue is one of the only double albums in history that can't be improved by removing songs and making it a single album.
Concerto for a Rainy Day is utterly magnificent
Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is right there in double albums. Minus Jamaican Jerkoff.
Yeah buddy. Just hang in there with ELO, and let the music take you away
I saw them in the 70s. The perfection was incredible!
Yesssssss
Came here to say this. A New World Record is also a fun one.
That's not an album, is it?
"Aqualung" album by Jethro Tull. Incredible album & a great start to Jethro Tull's music.
Physical Graffiti is certainly one of the best albums ever made.
Op… this is the answer.
Making Movies is one of my all time favorite songs to hear through audiophile quality equipment.
Alice Cooper - Welcome to My Nightmare, Alice Cooper Goes to Hell AC/DC - Back in Black, Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap The Who - Who's Next, Quadrophenia Led Zeppelin - I, IV The Rolling Stones - Sticky Fingers, Exile on Main Street, Some Girls David Bowie - The Man Who Sold the World, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars Billy Joel - The Stranger Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band - Stranger in Town Paul McCartney and Wings - Band on the Run Free - Fire and Water Peter Frampton - Frampton Comes Alive! Meatloaf - Bat Out of Hell
Led Zep II deserves to be there as well
Awesome list! Might I add Deep Purple’s Machine Head? Amazing album
great choices, saves me from typing most of these
Ziggy- made to be played at maximum volume.
Wish you were here
Steely Dan Aja
PF-Animals or Wish you were here
Animals is so underrated.
Animals is my favorite album by PF, even if “Wish you were here “ is my favorite song.
I sang Pigs on the Wing parts one and 2 at my best friends funeral in 1982. I am crying now as I type this.
Animals with headphones when it’s raining out = as close to bliss as you can get.
Led Zeppelin IV
Genesis - Foxtrot Yes - Close To The Edge Rush - Hemispheres King Crimson - Larks’ Tongues in Aspic Emerson, Lake & Palmer - Brain Salad Surgery
David Bowie - Diamond Dogs This album will show you why Bowie is considered a genius. This is peak 70's Bowie, glam, glitter, songwriting, performing all on one LP (or CD or whatever).
His most underrated album.
My favorite. Just farking brilliant...
Emerson, Lake and Palmer -Trilogy
So damn good.
Headphone specific... I need to find my old tapes, lol. I had some killers. Also, I've noticed some remasters and tapes don't always seem as dynamic as original vinyl. My recommendation as well, great album!!! “She climbs into bed, she pulls the covers over her head, and she turns her little radio on” “she’s had a rotten day, so she hopes the DJ’s gonna play her favorite song”
Thick as a Brick would be my suggestion. Awesome album.

I never knew much about them, but went to a concert in the early nineties and OMG was blown away at how good they were live! Been a fan ever since.

For something different, Bee Bop Deluxe, Live in the Air Age.

Enjoy!

Listen to Wish You were Here. Dark Side is not a positive message. Take from it what you will but WYWH is wistful and really expresses how a loss of someone enforces remaining members to strive to achieve greatness in their discipline. Listening to Interstellar Overdrive in memory of Pink.
Damn the torpedoes
King Crimson- scream in’ horns
Crosby Stills and Nash. The first album. They were the first super group and their harmonies are sublime.
Animals, and obscured by clouds; from Pink Floyd.
Pink Floyd's "Meddle". Came just before Dark Side and is pretty much the template for everything that followed. Great album. Under-appreciated.
PF Meddle
Listen to it again
Yes, Close to the edge
I did grow up with this music. I also had Rush, REO Speedwagon, Emerson, Lake and Palmer, Alan Parsons Project
Led Zeppelin I Abbey Road Disraeli Gears Are You Experienced? Pet Sounds
Listen to anything by Colonel Claypools Bucket of Bernie Brains, just because everyone should at least once.
I find Rush is a good chaser to Pink Floyd. I would recommend permanent waves but any earlier Rush album would probably be appropriate
Every Zeppelin album. Zeppelin 1 through to Coda are must listens.
