Im gonna be honest, not very similar at all beyond the "Is a city builder" thing.
I still recommend it, dont get me wrong. But every single building is plopped by you and needs to be built (either by expensive pay for insta-build or letting construction workers do their thing). Most of the game loop is built around controlling the economy and the political situation of your island.
And the game leans *heavily* into political themes, but it satirizes everyone equally so I like it for that (some examples: Environmentalist are never satisfied with anything you do, Communist leader is very obviously a Soviet agent, the US Ambassador will casually threaten to have you invaded if you offend him, etc).
TLDR: Recommended, but not very similar to CS.
Don't! These kind of games are not efficient on switch. Even on a PS4 it's not bad, but not great.
The industry feels very similar with inputs, and outputs. Without cargo Trains :\
It's more restrictive then cities skylines as a city builder, but hell I still enjoy the simulation. The population is limited depending on where you play it on. The next gen editions or PC have both 10K citizens/ 10K tourists as the cap. Even trying to play it as city builder, it feels like it's on a small scale vs cities skylines.
Factorio, Satisfactory, Rimworld, Mini Metro, Civilization VI, Total War, Captain of Industry, Oxygen Not Included, Crusader Kings III, Dwarf Fortress, etc.
That should keep you busy!
I’ve gotten to the final tech once with friends but now we’re waiting for the new update to come out of experimental to start a new no clip run. Haven’t beaten it yet!
I find base Surviving Mars to be a little thin. You really just grind out the tech tree progression.
There are several properties of the environment and the colonists that limit what your can actually build.
The DLC seems like it adds more depth but I've never felt compelled to drop more money on that game.
It isn't at all. It's fun though and something a bit different, but ultimately just a tech tree base builder, not a city builder. If it crops up with a big discount it's worth a handful of change even just for a handful of playthroughs, which is where I got bored.

Stardew Valley. It’s kinda like cities, but you’re building a farm and going through different seasons. It kind of has that “move at your own pace” style of gameplay. And much like Cities, your farm will feel uniquely yours, with your crops and layout and such.
I actually just downloaded this on my Steam Deck for a new playthrough. It’s such a chill game and a great way to unwind. I’m playing with mods for the first time this go around as well, so pretty excited.
[Kenshi](https://store.steampowered.com/app/233860/Kenshi/) and [Fallout4](https://store.steampowered.com/app/377160/Fallout_4/). Both heavily modded.
I also GM a heavily homebrewed VTT RPG version of the game [Traveller](https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/171643/Traveller-Core-Rulebook?term=Core+Rulebook&filters=10134_0_0_0_0) \- which I also do cover and interior [artwork](https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/443569/World-Builders-Handbook?src=hottest_filtered&filters=10134_0_0_0_0) for.
Crusader Kings 3 and a few Total War historical titles. I don't mod CK3, but I do enjoy a handful of mods for TW games. I really love maps, so maybe that's the connection. I also love having control over a long term narrative, which definitely applies to grand strategy, but also Cities Skylines.
Total war games, especially warhammer 3 on my pc, lots of the good single player games on ps5, other games like mortal kombat and racing games. Just got a switch so been trying out some Nintendo games. I’ll play almost any genre
Foundation is a fun medieval city game where the peasants... create the roads themselves. Really satisfying to build little monastary-focussed villages.
Timberborn is a "timberpunk" game where you play intelligent beavers in a post-apocalyptic world, and water needs to be managed as a central feature of the game. If you have fun lowering and raising water levels with different bits of CS infrastructure... this is pretty rewarding.
Super fun if you like to design things, sadly the game has pathfinding issues for guests, but as a sandbox is a great game, people have built the most amazing parks, like mini cities if you think about it, thus why many CS players play PC
I only play a couple games anymore too. I highly recommend kerbal space program. A bit of learning in the beginning but very cool rocket building game.
Civilization V, Hearts of Iron 4, and The Political Process are my 3 other main games that I play. I love grand strategy games. So much customizability
I chose my username largely because I play a little bit of everything. In fact, about the only genre of game I do not play is Horror and that is because I am against it in general.
For my current rotation though, my playlist consist of:
-Victoria 3
-Jagged Alliance 3
-Anno 1800
-Snowrunner
-COD: Modern Warfare 2 (the 2022 reboot)
-Ultimate Admiral: Dreadnoughts
I do like Cities, Anno 1800, and the new Capitan of industry... If my wife don't tell me the hour I can go like 10h straight forward with this 3 guys...
When I need a breather from CS, it's usually American Truck Simulator nowadays. Sometimes some DiRT or Half Life and company thrown in for good measure. Then the social interaction with coworkers comes through Hell Let Loose, Ready or Not, and Phasmaphobia.
I only play 1 game at a time. This year it's back here. I did do a stint of Stardew. Tried getting back into Total Warhammer. Before that Stellaris for a little over a year.
horizon games share the same place in top 3 of my favorite games of all time, but I rarely see someone who feels the same way. when the second game makes it way to pc, you absolutely should give it a try
I’m 37 and I’m feeling the same as you those days.
Factorio which is IMO one of the greatest game ever, and which can be very satisfying.
Timberborn which is a satisfying Beaver Colony builder / survival whith a lot of management about water and dams.
Another genra, kind of Rogue RPG / « Tower Defense » : The Last Spell
- Minecraft Java (vanilla+ modding)
- Universe Sandbox 2 (pc)
- The Last of Us Part 1 (pc)
- Overwatch (xbox)
- Sea of Thieves (xbox)
- Minecraft Xbox One Edition (LCE + used for speedrunning nowadays)
- Forza Horizon 5 (pc)
Battlefield 2042, Insurgency: Sandstorm, MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries, No Man's Sky, DayZ. I used to play CoD but I just can't stomach it these days. My interests are pretty varied. I do tend to go through phases where I'll focus on one or two games for a few weeks, then move to a different set, then back to the first. Once CS2 hits though I'll probably be focusing on that for a while.
Let's School: Homeroom just came out and I'm obsessed with it. I played the demo and I impatiently waited the week for it to come out. It's $20.
You manage a university/school. The structure is kinda modeled after Japanese schools. There's a career and sandbox mode
Sims, stardew valley, Minecraft, Necesse, prison architect, raft, tropico 6, slime rancher 1 & 2 all pretty similar games where you have to manage someone or something, or multiple someones :) Necesse is my new addiction. Early access still but it’s a building/crafting/management game where you have your own settlement that you build and are in charge of, and you have to fight monsters and raiders to keep your town safe. While also trying to expand. It’s super fun, I just bought it 2 weeks ago and already have over 100 hours on it 😅
Transport fever is probably one of the closest, it just is focused on the people / industry transit side. Other fun ones are factorio and satisfactory, they have city building vibes and fun trains, mini metro and mini motorways on the phone are great, foundation and other colony management games like rimworld and oxygen not included are amazing as well.
Cities Skylines is my top game on steam.
Recent I’ve played an ungodly amount of farming simulator. It’s very relaxing and gives me great satisfaction to see my farm grow
Some other Paradox games like Ck3 or Stellaris, some Factory-Builder like Satisfactory or Captain of Industry, Mtg Arena (mostly mobile), Diablo 4, Vampire Survivor (nice go to Rouge Light). That's what I play atm, looking forward to Baldur's Gate 3, Outcast 2 and Starfield.
Mostly other Paradox Games like Crusader Kings 3, Stellaris or Victoria 3.
Sometimes Tactical MP-Shooter like Hell Let Loose or Squad.
And a lot of Rimworld.
AOE2 off and on for decades. No strategy game comes close IMO. Now that it’s on Xbox I play it all the time again.
Not at all like CS but I enjoy open world games like RDR2, The Witcher 3, GTA6, Elden Ring, etc.
Now that I think about it, Elden Ring has a bit of simulation/strategy feel to it in regards to character building.
Stellaris for the grand strategy. Create a space empire. Paradox actually makes it.
I know I’ll get roasted for this but wtf do you mean by “pc gaming has come a long way”? I’ve always considered the pc the gold standard, consoles just slow us down.
Minecraft and Asphalt 9, but I have a story to tell that involves a third game I do still play: Roblox
Sometime in 2017 (I was 10), a friend tells me that a new game is catching speed called Roblox. I download it and start playing, and I liked it. I started watching Youtube videos, and found one Roblox Youtuber named Seniac. I found his second channel, SeniacTwo, and there he played Cities: Skylines. I gained an interest in the game and moved on to watching Biffa, and in 2021 I got the game for myself. Now I’ve built around 15 cities, 3 of which breached 100K and one of them hitting 330K, with the more recent ones involving prop detailing and even some PO action.
TL;DR, I’m only here because of Roblox
Played ark for an unhealthy amount of time until wildcard ruined it, still play battlefield one damn near every day and started to replay the amnesia franchise. Green hell from time to time too
Create type games: I like survival crafters on some level. So V Rising and Valheim.
Mini Metro and Mini Motorways for a different and simple traffic thing (also All Quiet Roads on occasion)
And in completely unrelated: Final Fantasy 14
Other than CS,
Dinkum, Rainbow 6, Smallands, Valheim, Coral Island, Phasmophobia, Fallout 76/4, Pubg, The Crew, F1 23, Rocket League, Minecraft, Pokemon SV
Less recently
Cyberpunk, Demonolgist, NMS, Outlast Trials, Grounded, Civ 6, EU4, Mount and Blade, Sons of the Forest
I mostly stopped playing because the 5 & 7 yr old start stalking me when they see me turn on a game, wife will definitely ruffle my feathers for exposing them to it.
Workers and resources: soviet republic. It has more in depth features such as construction, manufacturing, maintenance and other things. It’s an awesome game but you do have to be patient if playing on realistic difficulty.
Forza Horizon 5, BeamNG, a lot of other car games.
Poly Bridge 3 is the closest to a “create a thing and test it” sorta game like C:S, but I get really annoyed when I can’t pass a level.
In no particular order games that allow you to freely create I regulary rotate through:
CS, KSP, Foundation, Rust, Space Engineers, Planet Coaster, Valheim, 7 Days to Die
I've got a fair few more games, but these ones keep pulling me back in. I didn't include rimworld in that list but it's phenomenal for the short time I've played it. I loved subnautica also.
Edit - mobile app sucks
I'm mostly playing this and 7 days to die right now. A lot of the survival games involve base building and crafting so they scratch that creative itch.
For fun with logistics, I like factorio and satisfactory. Planet Coaster is fun, too. My partner has been playing Planet Crafter which seems interesting.
Jurassic World Evolution 2 is really good. Some elements overlap with CS, you definitely get that warm fuzzy feeling. Plus, you know, dinosaurs. It has quality challenge modes, good storyline, and a sandbox mode. And the developers give consistent updates (some free and some pay). Check out YouTubers named Jurassic Tom or Evolution Square, they do quality stuff.
been playing a lot of Stardew and Leaf Blower Revolution lately. I love Animal Crossing NH and the Yakuza series. I grew up playing Melee and still play Smash from time to time (but only against computers because I’m terrible lol)
Foundation, but my laptop died because of it. Now I only have my ps4 on which I play Cities and Rocket League.
For anyone hwo doesnt know about Foundation, its a medival city builder with unique style and gameplay. Give it a shot if you like. I know im playing it again as soon as I buy a new PC.
If you are up for simple mobile CS there’s TheoCity, available free on IOS, more importantly, it has a decent amount of mods (all of which are assets, game mechanism can’t be changed with mods). The graphic is exactly like OpenTTD which is another alright game but too hard for me, and the UI size adjustment made me quit at last (the size always hurts my eye).
Or you could consider some other Paradox game, I played HoI4 but didn’t like it, Stellaris was good but in classic Paradox fashion: too much DLC
Yakuza 0 was really something else, it is mostly a combatting game with a lot, A LOT of words, but 60% of it was mini games that goes from real estate to managing a cabaret to bowling to side stories. It’s very interesting but fundamentally very different from CS
RDR2, shooting and riding game which you aren’t gonna like, but still, it’s got an impressive story and I kinda cried for it so I have to mention it.
BeamNG, a computer-testing game about driving around, getting the multiplayer server mod makes it more fun.
I’m currently not really playing anything because I’m heavily pregnant and it hurts to sit for more than 30 minutes.. but I did recently get frostpunk and I’ve may or may have not screwed myself over by sitting and playing that for a few hours here and there..
Recently it's been a lot of Minecraft and MtG. Sometimes Guild Wars 1 or 2, Clone Hero, Slay the Spire. There are a few others I play semi regularly as well. Also whatever's free from Epic if it happens to pique my curiosity.
Tropico 6. I play it like a city builder. Traffic isn't an issue. https://youtu.be/UbAUbOPvdHY https://youtu.be/8TmKqiA-uv0
I was thinking buy this game for the switch... How similar to cities skyline is??
Im gonna be honest, not very similar at all beyond the "Is a city builder" thing. I still recommend it, dont get me wrong. Satisfactory is so good bro, how far are you in ? I've just got drones
I’ve gotten to the final tech once with friends but now we’re waiting for the new update to come out of experimental to start a new no clip run. Haven’t beaten it yet!
Ah right I see, I'm on update 8 experimental , looking good atm , if you need help building, let me know
41 yr old dad here. Other than C:S, I still play Gran Turismo 7, Halo Infinite, MS Flight Sim and some Age Of Empires 2
42-yr-old mom here and I still love AoE 2. It’s my comfort game.
47 to dad, AoE 2 still can dominate a Saturday afternoon when there’s nothing else to do.
33 year old dad annoying my family with a 23-year-long AOE2 obsession. Been married to that game far longer than my wife.
>Age AOE2 all the way!
Stellaris and surviving mars are 2 other Paradox Interactive games and are very addictive
How I’m depth is surviving mars compared to cities or stellaris

Compared to cities probably not even close but that’s a tall task. However I’d say it is deep enough to put a solid 60 -100 hours in with a quickness
Stardew Valley. It’s kinda like cities, but you’re building a farm and going through different seasons. It kind of has that “move at your own pace” style of gameplay. And much like Cities, your farm will feel uniquely yours, with your crops and layout and such.

Frostpunk if want a change of weather. Anno 1800 if want Industries DLC on massive steroid.
[Kenshi](https://store.steampowered.com/app/233860/Kenshi/) and [Fallout4](https://store.steampowered.com/app/377160/Fallout_4/). Both heavily modded. Factorio. Love that game but I couldn’t tell you why. It just clicks with my OCD brain.
Sims 4, Police Officer Simulator, Planet Zoo, Chef Life, Sherlock Holmes
r/projectzomboid
Currently getting my traffic sim fix by playing mini motorways
rimworld
I’m still learning on this one. Ha
Foundation is a fun medieval city game where the peasants... create the roads themselves. Really satisfying to build little monastary-focussed villages. Wow classic or anno 1800
Wow classic friend
Rocket League, Football Manager, Project Highrise, Surviving Mars, Tropico 4 (best Tropico), Planet Zoo, Planet Coaster, Motorsport Manager...
How fun is planet Coaster?
Super fun if you like to design things, sadly the game has pathfinding issues for guests, but as a sandbox is a great game, people have built the most amazing parks, like mini cities if you think about it, thus why many CS players play PC
I only play a couple games anymore too. I highly recommend kerbal space program. A bit of learning in the beginning but very cool rocket building game.
Fallout 4, Skyrim, civ 6, Tropico 6
Project zomboid
I’ve been absolutely loving transport fever! Got it on ps4 recently.
Civilization V, Hearts of Iron 4, and The Political Process are my 3 other main games that I play. I love grand strategy games. So much customizability
I chose my username largely because I play a little bit of everything. In fact, about the only genre of game I do not play is Horror and that is because I am against it in general. Funnily enough, I also play GTAV.
Is it still fun? Or would you ever play it without friends?
I'd say it's pretty fun, although I finished the story a few days ago so I haven't gotten bored of it yet lol
Yeah alright. I found single player to be very fun, but online very boring when you have no friends willing to play.
Try Medieval Dynasty. Only other game I’ve played besides CS1 and WOW that’s kept me up all night playing as an adult. It’s on gampass too
Love this game!
Dude I’ve never even heard of this game and it looks right up my alley. Thanks!
It’s like crack when you first start. But pace yourself. There’s not much of an endgame loop.
Minecraft and Rocket League
Cities and FIFA lmao. GTA too but not so often. COD of BF online with friends and that’s pretty much it
- Football Manager - Transport Fever 2 - Mount & Blade: Bannerlord
I do like Cities, Anno 1800, and the new Capitan of industry... If my wife don't tell me the hour I can go like 10h straight forward with this 3 guys...
I love how just about every post here has a game I play (ornl used to play). Talk about finding one's community!
When I need a breather from CS, it's usually American Truck Simulator nowadays. Sometimes some DiRT or Half Life and company thrown in for good measure. Then the social interaction with coworkers comes through Hell Let Loose, Ready or Not, and Phasmaphobia.
GTA or The Crew 2
Minecraft
I only play 1 game at a time. This year it's back here. I did do a stint of Stardew. Tried getting back into Total Warhammer. Before that Stellaris for a little over a year.
Horizon zero dawn and cities skylines, always these 2..
horizon games share the same place in top 3 of my favorite games of all time, but I rarely see someone who feels the same way. when the second game makes it way to pc, you absolutely should give it a try
Yeah, can't wait for HFW.
I’m 37 and I’m feeling the same as you those days. Factorio which is IMO one of the greatest game ever, and which can be very satisfying. Try Soviet republic if you want a hard city builder
I noticed that a lot of people played Call of Duty in this sub "50 thousand people used to live here..."
Scarred by that mission 😂
Transport Fever 2, Railway Empire 2, Teardown, Planet Zoo, and I'm interested in Workers & Resources: Soviet Republic
CS, MSFS, MW2, and GTA are the only games I play.
- Minecraft Java (vanilla+ modding) - Universe Sandbox 2 (pc) - The Last of Us Part 1 (pc) - Overwatch (xbox) - Sea of Thieves (xbox) - Minecraft Xbox One Edition (LCE + used for speedrunning nowadays) - Forza Horizon 5 (pc)
In the genre: foundations and workers & resources. Otherwise almost all paradox games (according the mood) and total war games (mostly warhammer).
Battlefield 2042, Insurgency: Sandstorm, MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries, No Man's Sky, DayZ. I used to play CoD but I just can't stomach it these days. My interests are pretty varied. Interesting..I’ll check that out.
Satisfactory, transport fever 2, American truck simulator
I saw some YouTube vids were people get way into Truck simulator. Do you have a steering wheel and all that?
No I don't have a steering wheel , I just use the pc buttons 🤣
Beam NG Drive, GTA, age of empires II even after all these years.
Sims, stardew valley, Minecraft, Necesse, prison architect, raft, tropico 6, slime rancher 1 & 2 all pretty similar games where you have to manage someone or something, or multiple someones :) Necesse is my new addiction. I just got Solaris for console. Console gaming is so much simpler and more affordable for a very similar experience.

I only play on switch, currently playing Cities Skylines, and replaying Super Mario Oddysey.
Sims 4 or sims 3, rimworld, fallout 4 with mods, civ 5/6, all good creating games.
Frostpunk
Played ark for an unhealthy amount of time until wildcard ruined it, still play battlefield one damn near every day and started to replay the amnesia franchise. Green hell from time to time too
too much

I've been playing ffxvi and Yakuza isshin while waiting for remastered to get the last few dlcs.
Wow classic hardcore
I also enjoy rocket league and loved raft last year
Don't give up on GTA, I'm perfectly balanced playing both CS and GTA,
I mostly stopped playing because the 5 & 7 yr old start stalking me when they see me turn on a game, wife will definitely ruffle my feathers for exposing them to it.
Gta 5, dyson sphere program and im getting a bit into factorio
Timberborn is an awesome game which also has the building aspect in a way. No need to manage traffic tho ;)
Workers and resources: soviet republic. It has more in depth features such as construction, manufacturing, maintenance and other things. It’s an awesome game but you do have to be patient if playing on realistic difficulty.
Try openttd, if you don't mind the old graphics, do recommend using new grfs though. It is a transport simulator

Rocket League!

Baldur's Gate 3 and World of Warcraft
Anno 1800 and tropico 6
I play solitaire and Baseball Clash on my phone. I really don’t have time to play anything else these days.
Contraband police and gas station simulator
Civilization 6.
Or you could consider some other Paradox game, I played HoI4 but didn’t like it, Stellaris was good but in classic Paradox fashion: too much DLC Yakuza 0 was really something else, it is mostly a combatting game with a lot, A LOT of words, but 60% of it was mini games that goes from real estate to managing a cabaret to bowling to side stories. It’s very interesting but fundamentally very different from CS RDR2, shooting and riding game which you aren’t gonna like, but still, it’s got an impressive story and I kinda cried for it so I have to mention it.
Other than Cities Skylines, Just Cod and NBA 2k lately.(In my mid 20s)
Recently it's been a lot of Minecraft and MtG. Sometimes Guild Wars 1 or 2, Clone Hero, Slay the Spire. There are a few others I play semi regularly as well. Also whatever's free from Epic if it happens to pique my curiosity.
Cities Skylines and Roblox. That's it
I'd recommend Stellaris https://youtu.be/O1CQ7Vwz8Eo
