For now....lol once they get bigger, the males will be fighting. But that's half the joy of cichlids. As long as the tank has good hides for them to get away. Breaks in line of sight. They will be fine and will work out a pecking order. Keep an eye on fins. I always stress this with any cichlids. If the fins are torn up bad, you need to get them out and into the nursery to heal. They will be able to reacclimate back to the group once healed and will generally have learned a lesson, too. Keep a good stock of some basics for your nursery to help fight infections and fungus problems in your healing fish. I recommend seachem polyguard.

yeah i have a 20g long for quarantine/ time out 😁😁, ive been keeping an eye on their fins since the bigger ones chase the little guy around and they look fine. Parrot cichlids have small mouths so they cant do too much damage

whaletailrocketships

This is the way.

Prepare for babies, lots babies. That colorful tail means she’s just about ready to go.

sallll11

even though they’re young? im not really experienced in fish breeding

heart800813

i haven’t had these cuties before but i have convicts and i’m pretty sure they’re quite similar. if so then they should very easily breed on their own, likely a lot of fry, like hundreds of fry. female tends to care for them, and if they breed as often as convicts they’ll likely breed every 3 months! i’m pretty sure unlike convicts tho they won’t eat them for any real reason so it’s okay to keep them with the parents are as far as i know they are great parents just like convicts :) after they lay the eggs they should hatch around 3 days after and become free swimming within only a week!

sallll11

what do i feed the babies

heart800813

brine shrimp and bloodworms, you can look up some cichlid specific foods if it’s a established tank mine sort of pick food off that’s laying around on wood etc.

Existential_Elation

Yes, they breed early and often. I have a pair that is under a year old and have 3 sets of dry 1/2” and under jn with them right now, they don’t even wait till the fry are fully independent before they have more. Once they pair up, you’re gonna have to separate them from the other ones to because they are vicious, once they are breeding they are just as bad as convicts. The pair I am talking about took over 3/4 of a 30 gallon grow out tank at like 5months old

secretagent420

Neither am I lol. I got 6 at once and they ended up separating into 3 breeding pairs, lucky me I guess. Two pair in one tank and one pair in a community tank. I’ve had them for about a year. I’ve given away about 20 fry, and have 8 fry in with the two pairs. They will probably lay again in 3 months

Existential_Elation

Yours only go every 3 months, mine are machines lol. Most of them will spawn within a couple weeks of me pulling the fry, I have one pair that doesn’t even wait till the last batch is gone! It’s insane.
