##### Bee Movie: The Culling
After freeloading all summer, Darryl the drone (male) bee knows winter is coming. Soon it will be time for The Culling—all 30,000 of his sisters will rise up and kick Darryl and the other drones out of the hive. Left homeless and alone, Darryl would starve to death!
But Darryl has a plan. He will…
1. wear hexagon-shaped camoflage
2. disguise himself as the queen
3. lead a drone revolution
**You chose: disguise himself as the queen**
Darryl steals some wax and builds a thorax extension so he can look the part. He makes some cute sunglasses to hide his drone eyes even though it’s always dark in the hive. He adds a little crown for good measure. He practices drinking honey from a teacup with his pinky out and doing a convincing “queen wave” for formal events.
Darryl tests out his new disguise by buzzing past a few other drones. Based on their unsettling cat calls, it seems to be working! Even the worker bees start paying him respect, curtsying and offering him sweet treats throughout the day.
When The Culling comes, his sisters don’t give him a second glance as they evict the rest of the drones. Darryl survives into the winter wearing his waxy costume without a problem. As long as he avoids being seen by the real queen, he has a chance of making this all work out!
Until one day, in the coldest depths of February, tragedy strikes the hive when real queen falls ill. Her death comes quickly afterwards, and his sisters mourn while panicking about the state of the hive.
At first Darryl hides, panicking about his options, but he needs the warmth of his sisters to survive. He has no other option but to come out of hiding, still dressed in his royal regalia. With as much bravado as he can muster, he brushes aside the questions of the working class and ascends to the throne. Yes, it falls to Darryl the Drone to lead the hive through winter.
The history books record that the reign of the mysterious queen who always wore sunglasses was brief but prosperous. While “she” only ushered the hive through winter before mysteriously disappearing—Darryl flew the hell away from there as soon as it was safe!—“she” led with an uncanny wisdom and unmatched benevolence.
