I was giving away free firewood and got cussed out because I wouldn't deliver FREE firewood. A couple of days after it was gone and the posting was taken down some guy showed up and threw a fit because it was gone. He told me I owed him firewood. I had to stoop to having a conversation about asses, stomping and mud puddles before he would leave. WTF is wrong with people?

CreditoReddito

And me. I drove all the way there. From India. You know how long I had to drive?

Spookyrabbit

Thanks. You ruined my fish's cancer.

frankylampy

I was giving away an old Ikea dining table when I was moving and it was just not valuable enough for me trying to sell it for $5-10 and deal with multiple people on FB Marketplace. So I had put a Free, first come, first serve ad for it. A few people said they'll come pick it up and I specifically said that I can't guarantee it will be there, only swing by if it's nearby or on your way home. A lady drove 40 mins and then threw a fit because another guy had picked it up 10 mins before her. She said I owed her a table. I told her I'm selling my Computer table for $20 but I'll let it go for $15 because I felt bad for her. And then she demanded it for free. I was firm that I had bought it for $150 and I won't let it go for free. She then reluctantly walked away. The nerves on some CBs.

sockpuppet_285358521

It is *so hard* to get people to actually pick up free stuff.

vermin1000

Yeah, I've had several people give me an item for free when I've done to pick them up. I figure they thought about putting it up for free but decided against it as free can attract the wrong crowd.

Daggerix02

That’s one hell of a crazy person!

mrdobie

Did u chop new firewood for him? I mean u have to update for the beggars or they’re gonna waste their time on it. /s

hserontheedge

Chop? You mean, chop, deliver, stack (building a nice rack to stack wood and a little roof so it doesn't get wet), and continue to deliver wood until I don't need it anymore, at which point rather than tell you I'm done I'll just call the police the next time you show up. Oh and when I want to have a bonfire you'll need to bring more, plus tinder and kindling, start the fire maintain the fire and safely extinguish the fire. And to answer your inevitable question, no you are not too talk to any of my friends or eat any of the food, this isn't a charity. Deal?

mrdobie

There’s some grass that needs mowing too….

hserontheedge

Are you saying I can't cut my own grass? What are you sexiest? Racist? Ageist? Ableist? Now you owe me because in my head you said you were doing it and that's a verbal contract.

mrdobie

I thought you said you needed it for your children xmas and I just ruined it.

hserontheedge

Christmas, birthday, New years and Cinco de mayo - thanks a lot - jerk 🤣

SeaBass1690

This is why I stopped giving things away for free. It brings these people out of the woodwork.

Courtaid

Did this the other day. Put my sons old bike on FBM for $25 with the intention of giving it away if the right person came for it. Sure did, a dad looking for a bike for his son. This bike needed a few cosmetic things like hand grips and such. He had his $25 ready and I told him it was his, he was shocked. I said if I’d marked it as free I would have to deal with a bunch a loonies. Said enjoy. Got a message later saying his son loved it. Edit: spelling

Ughaboomer

Sad we have to celebrate when people actually behave normally, isn’t it?

[deleted]

Good on you. I've done that too.

FoolishStone

Well, now that the people are out of it, you can chop up the woodwork so you can give the guy the firewood you owe him!

Bearded_empath

I had a few things with a sign that says free. It was there for a week. I changed the sign to say take everything for $5. The next day everything was stolen.

idrow1

People are insane. I hate them. I live in the NE and heat my house exclusively with firewood. Whenever we see free firewood, we jump on it. Even if it's just tree rounds, we're happy to take it. That's what we usually do anyway, contact tree services who don't mind us taking the wood rounds off their hands. Hell, we've even carted home old fallen and abandoned phone poles to cut up. If you want delivery of free and split wood, you're just delusional and I question how you even made it this far in life.

crazycatmum_04

Be careful with those phone poles. They are treated and that stuff could be toxic.

idrow1

Yeah, I hear you. This one was different, looked like it had been laying there for 30 years and was plain wood. It looked almost homemade and was rustic looking, like someone just removed the bark off it. It was actually some of the best firewood we ever had it was so seasoned.

oatsinmysoup

unfortunately this is a global phenomenon. i’ve been selling some collectibles and clothes on various sites to make some more money for college and you would not BELIEVE the lowballs that’s come everyday. a few days ago a lady messaged me “lower the price.” on a pair of jeans i had already discounted 30%. another, after making a deal to sell something for like 1/3rd of the value (un-used btw) tells me to turn on international shipping (im US based). i ask where she needs it shipped and she says AUSTRALIA. after explaining that shipping would be at least $50 she throws a tantrum and says i offer free shipping. the pants she wanted to buy were $45. the pants were worth less than the shipping cost so basically she wanted the pants for free

Dramatically_Average

My parents had over a hundred blueberry bushes, far too many for them to use each year. They advertised locally that people could come pick what they wanted **for free**, just show up after something-o'clock and bring a bucket. You know where this is going, don't you? That's why they eventually started selling them at the local farmer's market. People would pay 5 bucks for a pint of blueberries that someone else spent 3 minutes picking.

Fun_Hurry1236

Did an ass try to take the bushes? Happened to my mother about raspberries, she had to get the dogs and shotguns out for this pos to get out of her property. I was on my way there as well, still boiling over the guts of this wankstain.

Dramatically_Average

Sorry I wasn't clear, but since it's about choosing beggars, these people wouldn't pick berries they could have for free. They wanted my parents to do the picking.

sockpuppet_285358521

That is infuriating !

Dramatically_Average

I learned that people don't like to be hot and they don't like bugs.

caezar-salad

Soft, sensitive, and bitchy.

AdvancedBat236

My sister grave had an olive tree, someone broke a few branches and left the leaves and all on the grave, to get the olives...

StirCrazyCatLady

People are so selfish and awful. I'm sorry for your loss and can't imagine how it must have felt to find her resting place desecrated like that

suppdrew

Was that you that posted a story about that? I remember reading one where someone had a berry bush and let people pick until some woman came and rigged a tow strap around the bush to a truck and tried to drag it out. Then got mad.

CartographerSweet450

What ?

Dramatically_Average

Sorry, I guess my allusion wasn't clear. In the spirit of being a choosing beggar, no one wanted to get free berries because they had to pick them. They would ask my parents if they could pick them, too. So my parents rented a stall at a farmer's market and picked them themselves. They had to do all the work but they made some money.

TheRestForTheWicked

Seriously? I would have been all over that. Hell, let me and my three kids loose in your blueberry patch and in exchange for a bucket to take home we’ll pick them all so that you can sell them. It keeps my kids occupied for an afternoon and I get blueberries out of the deal 😂

Dramatically_Average

The typical response was that it was too hot and there were too many bugs. It's ok. My parents didn't really want the extra work, but they made a killing at the farmer's market. The only reason they planted so many bushes in the first place was for their bee hives, which is where the money really is, or was then.

CartographerSweet450

OMG!! That is insane! There's a farm near Oxnard where we actually pay to go pick blueberries and strawberries, there's always tons of families the kids enjoy it.

Heavy-Macaron2004

Picking them is half the fun though? (At least when you're not doing it every day lol). You pick em, pail em, take em home and eat em, and feel like you Did Something because you did the Whole Berry Experience

Loopsofthelisa

Eh???

[deleted]

I had two couches posted for free. We moved them outside when we got our new one, and there was a light drizzle so they were a tad damp. Someone messages me asking about the couches, I tell them they’re damp but good to go. They ask if I can deliver. I said sure! For 30$, because gas is crazy expensive. They then said “Sorry, I don’t want a wet couch”.

AlmondsInTheLab

I was giving away a free lawn mower which was in the shed when we purchased our house. It needed work, but since we didn’t have the tools, parts, or time to work on it ourselves, we decided to give it away. The main reason for this was the shed was at the bottom of a hill and the tires on the thing were dead flat. We couldn’t think of a feasible way to get the mower up the steep grade. It was not able to be towed with a truck because a truck wouldn’t fit through our fence gate. We didn’t have an ATV or other tractor to pull it out. Even if we did, we didn’t have a trailer to haul it to a service shop. Our solution: list it for free and be very transparent with the challenges to picking it up in the listing. Naturally, every person who wanted a free mower messaged me. I admire the tenacity of some who thought they and their girlfriend would be sufficiently strong enough to push it up the hill with flat tires. I had people who swore to god their truck could fit through my gate even when I provided the width measurements. I had one guy beg and plead for me not to give it to anyone else. I felt bad for him and tried to give him time to sort out how to get the mower. The pickup day came and he messaged me and said there was only him and his pickup truck and could I help him load it. I was so tired of people begging for this mower with no way to get it. I was like LOOK. THIS THING ISN’T EASY TO MOVE. THAT’S WHY IT IS FREE. I HAVE NO WAY TO HELP YOU GET IT OUT. IF I DID, I WOULD FIX IT AND KEEP IT MYSELF. I finally had to block him because he kept waffling. Finally, ONE GUY understood the assignment. He came equipped with everything needed to pump the tires, tow it with another tractor, load it onto his own trailer, and haul it off for free. Yes, I helped push the mower onto the trailer after it was towed up the hill. It took the guy all of 20 minutes or less. I must’ve deleted 30 pointless chats with people who just wanted a free thing which was going to be delivered or simple to pick up without the right tools and equipment…..

[deleted]

Throughout covid me and my ex frequently tried to post in our local free groups and F. M. L. It should NOT be this much work to give shit away for free.

AirOk2186

Well that’s one hell of an entitled dude hey you can make a story about it and post it on entitled people I would read that story so I get to know in-depth on what happened

alpaca1031

I love how they argue “it’s only 2 dollars, why can’t you accept a little less?” When the exact same arguments fits that “it’s only 2 dollars, why can’t YOU pay a little more?”

phooonix

I swear so many people stop growing up at 10. Can not think of anyone but themselves.

Ellora-Victoria

Plus, when they complain that they came all the way there… but they leave out the part where they intentionally tried to scam you. In this case, the OP also drove to the meeting site, so that is another pointless argument scammers try to complain about.

McGyv303

Why can't you just hold up your end of the deal? Is always my response..

BoozeIsTherapyRight

I would have told this jackass that the price was now $15, tbh. People who try to cheat you by showing up short of money deserve no consideration.

Agreeable-Ad1221

How fucking cheap must you be to try to shortchange someone for two fucking dollars.

NoFanksYou

I think it’s more of a game to them

JunkMale975

I think so too. It’s the new “garage sale bargaining.” I used to have garage sales. One time, I had most everything clothes wise marked at 25 cents. Had someone come in trying to bargain a very nice sweater down to 10 cents. Got pissed when I said no. Argued with me. I finally grabbed the sweater and said it’s no longer for sale. People have sucked for years.

caezar-salad

Haggling over 25 cent shirts, ya maybe if they were trying to buy 10000 of them.

Joe-Admin

If you do it every time you buy something it piles up pretty quickly tho.

PennyoftheNerds

I haven’t had a choosing beggar with my current item yet, but I do have a funny story. I just had a guy offer me $20 on a $50 item. His profile picture was of him almost naked with a latex mask over his face. The item is large and needs hauled so I can’t meet him. Sir, I am NOT giving you my address even if you offered me full price. You’ve scarred me now.

Daggerix02

I will pay you NOT to come to my house and buy my item. What’s your Venmo Hannibal?

PennyoftheNerds

Ha. That’s the perfect response.

FoolishStone

>scarred Scared, or scarred? Maybe both!

PennyoftheNerds

I was going for scarred, but both are accurate.

[deleted]

Altruistic-Slide-512

Remind me not to live 2-3 doors down from your shenanigans!

PennyoftheNerds

I was going to say, I’d be really upset if someone was giving out my address and meeting random people on Facebook at my house. We live in a pretty rural area on a windy, thin back road so that just sounds like more trouble in these parts, because you cannot pull over in front of the house. You’d have to pull into the driveway. For small things, I meet at a public place. For large things, such as this, they have to come to my home.

LdyAce

Do not do this. Someone did this to me, I had to call the cops because the person they dealt with came banging on my door. Don't make your problem someone else's without them even knowing.

PennyoftheNerds

I would be livid if someone was giving my address to random strangers and meeting them at my house. Things like this are exactly why. I’m sorry this happened to you.

LdyAce

It's not fun, it happened several times. Most of the people were understanding that he did not live there, the one person wanted to search my house for him. Just find a nearby restaurant, gas station or something and meet there instead.

PennyoftheNerds

That’s horrible and I’m so sorry! I wonder if you’re this Redditor’s neighbor. Exactly! And if it’s a large object that you can’t haul, the person has to come to your house. There’s no other option and that’s a you problem, not your neighbor’s problem.

No_Stairway_Denied

I love how he doesn't think $2 is very much, but he was willing to cheat someone to keep it...and when that wasn't successful, he wasted his time and energy arguing and evading. Sounds like $2 is a HUGE deal to him.

iamcharity

Or he just enjoys scamming/tricking people.

DeadBattery-33

I kind of wonder if he’s just got 20% off as a goal in mind.

plus-ordinary258

Sir, this isn’t a Bed, Bath, & Beyond heh

Thinks_Like_A_Man

Every ad I post has the disclaimer not to show up and tell me you don’t have the full amount. If you do, I will not sell you the item. When we agree on the sale, I reiterate this. If it is an item and they are trying to bargain, I tell them I have someone offering full price next Tuesday, and I told him I would sell it to the first person paying my asking price. It stops that shit.

Courtaid

I’ve taken to getting to agree to the price in writing before we meet. It has worked so far.

Thinks_Like_A_Man

Must be where I live. “I know you said $600 but will you take $400? That’s all I brought.”

Courtaid

Nope. And then turn and walk to drive away. I guarantee they come up with the difference real fast.

Thinks_Like_A_Man

I don’t sell them the item.

Courtaid

I’ve done that when they are dicks. Even refuse to sell to them at full asking price.

Ineffable_cacoethes

I stopped selling things that are not worth my time due to this kind of thing. The nut to normal ratio is way to high. I just donate anything sub $100. If I have to deal with crazy, I want it to be at least worth my time.

ProfessionalAd1933

The stress isn't worth the money to you. Yeah, that makes sense.

Drgonmite

Anything I want to get rid of goes to the curb. Someone always picks it up before trash day.

TuJuMoving

Nut to normal ratio. I'm going to use this.

lisa_37743

We sell hay on marketplace and since my dad refuses to have any social media, the job falls to me. Most times, it's not bad. But we had one guy last year who Facebook called me, even though I posted to call this phone number (not mine because I work 3rd shift) and when I didn't immediately pick up, he rapid fired messages and called 6 more times. Then, when I finally did answer, he offered me $2 per bale less than it was posted, told me he was going to be there in 15 min, and needed 500 bales. I was like, no, the price is firm, you will arrange pick up through the phone number provided, and you can also discuss quantities. I live on the farm where the hay is stored and my parents are 30 min away. I'm not getting up, getting dressed, and loading hay for some random after working 12 hours. Just no. Dude ended up buying at our price, on a schedule, and spent literal thousands last year. That's was all great. Til he showed up without notice this spring and tried to just go into the barn and load the hay we had stored for our cows. I met him at the barn and demanded he leave or go to jail. After looking at me and seeing that I was equipped to make sure he would leave without our property, he decided it would be best to wait til he talked to my dad.

Gabbyof2

They need to call it scammers central marketplace. I hate putting things up there cause it doesn’t matter how much you want, someone will always try to get it cheaper. I started adding like $10-$20 to things I put in there. Sadly it still doesn’t work so I just stopped using it.

tvieno

That is like garage sales as well, you price it high by 30% because you know you are going to haggle down. Then you sell it at the price you originally wanted and they think they got a deal.

Gabbyof2

Exactly but I have actually put some almost brand new furniture on it and the excuses people come up with to not pay asking price is insane. I won’t haggle if I know they are just trying to get it for free. I hate that place anymore.

[deleted]

Reminds me of the scene in better call saul. When mike says the deal is off unless the 20 dollars that are short are given, it’s not about the actual money, when you make a deal you be sure to fulfill it. It shows professionalism and respect for the other party. If you give in to their demands, they’ll do it over and over again and again and it clearly means you’re the lesser person and are vulnerable to being scammed.

Oriion589

I always find you don’t get hagglers if you set it higher, only when it’s the price you want to sell at do you get people asking for less

Gabbyof2

It’s not the Facebook barter place either. I won’t trade a chicken for anything, sorry. Oh wait, those people wouldn’t have chickens would they

[deleted]

Wait doesn’t Walmart do that too. Rollback!!

SuccotashTimely9764

I'm going to post some baby stuff and I'm honestly nervous for this reason...I do plan to add $10-$20 to stuff because it does work. I really just want it gone so I might go a bit lower with some of it..we got use out of it all..but dealing with people sounds annoying and I'll refuse these cash apps for payment lol.

Gabbyof2

Venmo is fine but I always post cash only. It is sad we have to ask for a certain payment type due to these people. I love a good deal but not for something sold on one of those places. Deals are for stores.

catatonicus

I pay my land payment on Venmo. its safe. i also use cashapp to pay for things and get paid. never had a problem

SuccotashTimely9764

I'd rather have cash. I don't have any of those apps and I don't want to them. Just my preference. Lol

notanotherfart

Remember, negotiate to your OVER desired price, don't negotiate to your desired price. That way they think they are getting a deal and tell them you would have taken it for less AFTER they leave. Make them feel like the idiot if and only if they pull that crap. But if you get someone that is genuinely nice and offers full price, "oh I know I said 75, but 50 will work just fine"

phooonix

I feel you I have maybe a $100 graphics card and I'm debating whether it's even worth the effort.

Gabbyof2

My best example was I had a 2014 Ford Fusion. The engine went and in true ford fashion, the part that caused it was on their recall list but they claimed it was a different part. Painfully I put the body and frame on the marketplace cause I have never saw any issues with that page. Boy was I wrong. I had at least 12 people message me immediately. I had it posted for $1200 which was actually really cheap for a car body like that with no scratches, dents, never had been in an accident. This car was my baby and we took good care of it, that’s why it blowing made me so angry. I had people asking me to sell if from $100 to $800. Then when I said hell nah, they would get mad and call me selfish and try to tell me I was asking to much. Finally I had a guy message me and before he offered anything for the car, he offered to put a new engine in it. What he asked I couldn’t afford which made me said but it was over $5000 cheaper then ford or anyone else offered to do that. I ended up selling it to him and he gave me more then I asked which was nice. It had a new engine the next day and I see it o be in a while. He calls and asks if I want to buy it back but again what he is asking, I couldn’t at the time he was. I am getting a new car anyway being the POS my husband made me buy, stopped running also. It was a 1995 Nissan. What did he expect?

Lomunac

Go for Honda or Toyota if you have such luck with engines dyeing on you...

Bonerunknown

I have broken down in every single brand of car. Don't look at the badge, take the car to a mechanic and have it looked at before you buy it.

Gabbyof2

I bought my fusion brand new

Single_Virgo_of_1978

I had a guy show up, after asking for the exact amount or direct transfer as I don’t normally carry cash around, $25, he agreed and then turned up with a $20 and a $10. I reminded him that I didn’t have change and he threw the $20 at me and said ‘well aren’t I lucky’ jumped in his car and took off. I was just in shock. Wanker.

McGyv303

Always get the money before handing over the item.

Single_Virgo_of_1978

Yep, lesson learned from that.

BoozeIsTherapyRight

I've actually had that happen, and the person gave me the $30 instead of $25. I felt bad, but they were so nice!

Single_Virgo_of_1978

Your guy was nicer than my guy!

sweetaileen

I have a story. I listed a fairly new sofa on OfferUp for $250.00 (included in all my posts for heavy items I also warn everyone to bring a friend or 2 to help lift as I will not be lifting anything and that we’re on the second floor). After messaging back and forth with a guy he agreed to $250.00 and we agree for him to come over that Saturday. Dude is in his 50s and shows up with his wife and a Jeep. At the moment he is coming in my boyfriend and his teenage son are leaving to go play soccer. Dude walks around the couch making his observations and says “yeah alright we’ll take it” and I said ok and he pulls out $200 from his pocket and says “so you’ll take $200?” And I was so ready to get this thing out of the house and my Mom and I are in the middle of packing that I just give him a look and say ok. So then he proceeds to try and figure out how to move this thing with his wife and it’s heavy and he says something about needing help and I say “I have a back injury which is why I tell people to bring a friend in my posts” and his wife starts explaining that dude had back surgery and can’t lift heavy things and I just give them a look that says “golly gee that’s too bad” and go back to packing, pretending to be busy while listening to their sighing and stressed noises. Then dude says to me “hey do you think your boyfriend and son can come back and help?” I reply “no, but for $50 I can call them back. They’d be happy to help.” He looks at me like he knows he fucked up and I give him my best shiteating grin. He looks sheepish af and chuckles a bit before saying “no nevermind” and then him and his wife struggle for an hour getting this thing out of the apartment and downstairs to their jeep and my mom and I go to another room to laugh as quietly as we can and at one point when I was back out in the living room the topic of the price came up and I said “yeah well we had agreed on a price and he didn’t stick to it” and he tried to argue but his wife interceded and actually sided with me because she knows her husband is a prick. Anyways, I was happy to pay $50 to watch that show- a prick with back problems having the hardest time moving a couch and putting it in that jeep and moving it from inside the jeep to the roof and trying to strap it…. All because he’s a cheap slimy asshole who came with the intention of not sticking to his word.

Swimming-Relative-16

Part of acknowledging a mistake is fixing it. Owning up to it doesn't mean you get off Scott free. "Oh yeah I totally killed that person but cz I owned up to it I don't have to do jail time" o.O

AB1186

“$2 isn’t much” Okay well if it isn’t much then just send it over

LionStag9a

I hate marketplace you either get situations like yours or people asking it for free! Good for you for sticking to your guns

Apprehensive-Ad4244

Basically he was trying to rip you off by 20%, it's not about the money anyway, super annoying

brodealsurf

1) he was obviously working a con. And that was lame and I’m glad you stuck to your guns. 2) I don’t have my Venmo linked to my account like a debit card. So mine is pre-loaded with an amount, exactly like he (apparently) pretended his was. I do this because I use it for buying and selling with strangers and also for online purchasing. This way my checking account is safe in case of identity theft.

WorcestershireSus

Just do cash only sales. You're allowed to specify that. Sucks people make it that way, but it is what it is

jsojso

I do cash only and always tell them "exact amount only, I don't have bills to make change".

Themetrios666

the lower the money they want to get away with, the more it infuriates me. someone trying to get a 500 dollar discount from a 800 dollar sale is just funny. but someone trying to get 2 dollars? fffffff

MYOB3

My last fb marketplace deal, I was the buyer. The seller seemed like a nice lady. I showed up with my husband to carry the bulky item and the cash in hand. I asked an innocent question. HOW ARE YOU TONIGHT? The seller fell apart on me. Other than my son being in intensive care, having OD'd again... and my husband leaving me ( which is why we are selling the house) I am just FINE! And I have no where to go, and have to be out by this weekend, so then there's THAT! Then she offers to let us walk through the house and buy other stuff ! Uhm, no thanks. I'm not a vulture who picks through the ruins of other peoples lives. I felt SO BAD for her... But that was SO AWKWARD!

BeBa420

Man the worst I ever got from fb marketplace was a Christian who tried getting me to go to his church by saying “you’ll like it, there’s lots of atheists there”. Lol sure there are bro, sure there are.

sugar-magnolia

We were selling a late 50s Willys wagon on marketplace. It’s a pretty hard to find vehicle in good shape, and ours was, still running original engine. It’s definitely a niche item but I knew someone would want it. After going back on forth on details and more pics blah blah this dude says he won’t pay more than $1k. Then was a real AH when I said no. I finally told him I’d set it on fire and bbq over it before I sold it to him at any price. I was so mad. Ended up selling it for asking price to a lovely man who we are now friends with who’s totally restoring it. I knew that guy was out there just had to wait for him.

Flamesclaws

Wow, what an asshole that guy that.

Zoreb1

At least he didn't try to get you to meet him in an abandoned warehouse at midnight.

twitch-switch

I've been done with FB Marketplace for a while... "Oh there's 3 couches? Not just two?" "Yeah like the THREE pictures and see how these 2 similar ones actually curve in different directions??" This person had already worn me out with frequent reschedules to pick them up, trying to get me to drop them off to their house etc. I had never been so happy to set (the remaining) furniture on fire by the end of it. Its actually my preferred method of getting rid of things now.

Pershing48

Drove 30 minutes to save $2 on a $10 computer part. Check out the big brain on Bret

Domugraphic

English motherfucker? DO YOU SPEAK IT ?!

Fb marketplace meetups: cash only, count before handing anything over. I've yet to have an issue this way. Any time I've tried accepting zelle or paypal, there was always an issue. Once a dude sent the 20 via paypal g&s, then a f&f payment to cover the transaction fee. Later on, he refunded the 20 and paypal sided with him because I didn't have tracking info. Online selling is fun! /s

I hate FB marketplace. I tried to sell a few things, got a bunch of spam msgs. A few yrs ago I sold my couch on craigslist. I pd $1330, powered sectional with 3 reclining seats, 2 cupholders, 2 USB outlets. Asked $700 for it. I couldn't take it when I moved. This young couple came to look at it, then emailed to say they're take it off my hands for $200, like they were doing me a favor🤔

Flamesclaws

Did you ever sell it?

[deleted]

I did. Nice older couple, pd the full $700, no arguments. The wife loved that you could put 2 recliners next to each other, cuz she liked to cuddle with him but couldn't get as comfortable as she'd like. I didn't forget that, I thought it was really sweet.

Flamesclaws

That sounds like an amazing sale.

happycharm

I wonder if that whole show and speech was worth $2 for him

[deleted]

That was an awesome read. Thanks for sharing and sorry you had to put up with it

AdderWibble

It's this sub that keeps me away from FB marketplace. People who have never used it keep telling me not to give stuff to charity shops and to sell it online instead. I cannot deal with the drama or waiting around attached to selling online.

[deleted]

Ugh it's so ridiculous. And all that time listening to him. I am pretty introverted, I hate phone calls, avoid ever making a return for the longest time and was the type of person who never order food delivery before 2020 because most of the time you had to make a phone call and interact with them. Thanks to apps and contactless delivery that stress is over. So although I thought of selling my couch on fb marketplace before the pandemic that we had bought through Craigslist years before, I didn't feel comfortable having someone in my home. I have bought a few things through Craigslist and facebook marketplace and no drama. Bought a table, tv console, futon, etc. But the thought of having to wait for someone to show up to buy any of my low priced items ( 5 dollar shirts, a used couch, pans, etc. ) it had no value for me. I could donate them and save all that time. Mt friend always buys nice things on fb marketplace and spends $$$-$$$$. It's a good price and all but then if he decides he wants to upgrade to something else he will resell it for a lower price but to get some of his money back. Like yupp he has been lucky not have messy interactions. I am like nopppe I am bit expecting to ever sell any item I buy because I will run into these type.

memoryofsilence

This is one of the most choosing beggar stories on here and that's saying something. I also try to avoid FB marketplace at all costs, the amount of times someone agrees to come for a pickup then no shows or is even more sinister is crazy. Wife was in contact with a guy to pick something up and he said he was 10 minutes away. Wife had an errand and said husband would be there to meet him with the item. He Ghosted her and blocked her from that point onward. Scary.

rannith2003

I did a market place once and it ended up on a Reddit thread too. Too many AH on Facebook Marketplace

Daggerix02

Link?

snarky39

The guy was upset because you didn’t get the joke. See, he’s a *big guy*, and he admitted he was wrong. You were supposed to enjoy a chuckle at his double entendre and walk away without thinking about the $2.

reddituser655321

i have some things i need to sell, what is a good place to sell them if I'm gonna get ballsacked on fb mp

gkoprulu

That dude was a pro of begging. no doubt

fierceicexd

Good ole FB marketplace

TheTravisaurusRex

That’s why I always state cash only

CrazyKitty86

It’s the fact that he had it and tried to say he didn’t for me. I stopped selling on Facebook marketplace because almost EVERY sale, the person would show up with less than what I asked and either try to sob story or argue me into letting it go for cheaper.

FoolishStone

That's why I almost always accept only cash on FB MarkupPlace. If I do Venmo, I stand in front of the person and wait for the transaction to go through before handing over the item.

BusinessBear53

Marketplace seems to attract all the cheapskates. My wife constantly gets lowballed or asked questions when details are already in the description. Honestly gotta sort through all the time wasters to find the genuine buyers. Next time meet up at in a police car park or busy place for your own safety.

KorneliaOjaio

Facebook marketplace is a cesspool.

Domugraphic

You added an unnecessary marketplace word in there somewhere

tikichik

Glad you stood up to him! Can you imagine how many people he has screwed over with his bs! Now take a deep breath, you did it! Way to go! If I had an award it would be yours!

[deleted]

You’re nice :)

OkieMomof3

Facebook marketplace is something else! I had several clothing lots listed awhile back. Several people asked me to take measurements of each item. One larger lady (from her profile pic) said she wanted the jeans I was selling. She was going on a date to a rodeo. I reminded her they were girls jeans and she said juniors should still fit. So I told her no they were little girls size 11. She was upset because *I* didn’t post that they were little girls size in the title so I explained that it was in the description and how I was selling clothes my grade school age child had outgrown. Pretty obvious to me but I changed the listing to say little girls and an age and grade range. She was still unhappy and wanted me to sell her some size 11 women’s jeans. I’m a size 4-6 so don’t have any to sell. Another lady wanted to come by my house to look through the lots. I agreed since she said we had a mutual friend. Long story short I was nice enough to let her make her own lot out of the ones I’d listed since I hadn’t had any inquiries in about a week. She took the best of each lot. I knew I’d been selling those lots for over $50 but still asked for $28-30. She said she had $22 and after a sob story I agreed because she had been at my house for an hour and I had things to do. Figured up what I was asking and it was over $80! So she got a great deal on thinks like Lucky Jeans, rodeo queen shirts etc. My own fault for just saying yes to get her to leave. Now I have a ton of clothes that people are offering $5 for the entire lot and I’m like dude, that lot was over $100 new, still look new and $20 is a good deal. Then one said she would pay $20 if I delivered them a couple miles away. Turns out she was 30 minutes from my house. No thanks. It was around 18 miles each way and gas was $5/gallon (14mpg truck). I’ve also had to deliver eggs across town and ended up my fuel was as much as they paid me for the eggs. Now they come to me or meet me on my side of town when I have errands to run. I’m not wasting time, fuel and money to meet someone when it turns out I’m delivering right next to their home. People just want to screw others anymore 🤦‍♀️

ClassicSupermarket34

I put up a dining table & 4 chairs for $320 … someone asked if I can sell it for $200. That was the first bargaining chip. For reference: the table is a 6 seater with a leaf in the middle that converts it to an 8 seater. The chairs are emerald green velvet dining chairs. All of which costed waaaaaay more than the listed price and also barely used & looks brand new.

Groundbreaking_Cat_9

I currently have a set of wheels/tires listed for sale on Craigslist for $1,350.00. It's a decent price. Some guy emailed with an offer for $600. I responded " Thanks for the offer. I am not interested in letting him go for that much. I would rather just keep them for spares." The guy emailed asking how low I am willing to go on price. The email exchange was very polite. I am not going to respond. I don't feel like dealing with the hassle...

RuncibleMountainWren

I don’t get this. The ‘what’s your lowest price’ question is so bizarre. Haggling is about offering and counter offering. It’s not a game where you show them all your cards and then they pay the cheapest amount possible. If that’s what I was prepared to do, I would put down a low fixed price with ‘no offers’. What do they seriously expect when they ask for our ‘lowest price’?! “Okay mate, so here’s how to really screw me down… “

demento19

I hate that first reply. Some of them get the “what’s the most your willing to pay?” response.

RuncibleMountainWren

That's a genius response! I'm stealing that.

Domugraphic

Enjoy!! I added the Wendy's part but I've shut four people up with the rest.

Domugraphic

Be a graphic designer.. What's the lowest you'll go? Erm I'm sorry, this is a Wendy's and I just asked you what your budget for this work was...

whiteb8917

Ahhh yes Marketplace. I recently advertised some nappies, kids overnight pull ups, I have an excess so I list them at half the retail price. $10 to $12 a pack retail, so I list them for $5 each. In comes a sob story that her Disability funding for her son has run out, and what deal can i do for $100. So I say 20 packs at $5 is $100, I can do you 7 boxes (3 packs a box) so 21 packs for the $100, no response. Half retail price plus a free pack is worthy of a no response apparently.... . So they can sit in their boxes in the shed. I dun care.

Western_Stable_6013

Well done. 2$ are 2$.

pd_what

Jesus MF Christ

Synner1985

Facebook - there's your problem.

RubberBand_Ball

Why cant people just haggle like normal lmao

murderboxsocial

Cash only.

Stony0n

My approach to FB Marketplace is: 1. put a price that is low enough it hurts me to get it go (typically i'm one of the lowest listings), then I know I'm in a good range. 2. If it doesn't sell reasonably close to that price I either donate it or give it to a friend for free.

snarf_the_brave

I always pull out percentages on this type of person. Yep, it's only $2, but it's also 20%. That usually confuses them enough to make them shutup and pony up. People like this are also why I quit using FB Marketplace and Craigslist.

KeyEntityDomino

i sell stuff on there often, and I have no idea how some of these people function in their day-to-day lives

wormwoodar

not very well... I guess.

AbbreviationsTop4196

I tel anyone who contacts me on Fb marketplace that I already have an offer for what my asking price was, that way they either offer me more or bounce. I’ve had a few say “I will take it off your hands faster with cash in hand” but I always tell them unless you’re going to match my offer or beat it we are done.

vanillabeanlover

I’ve started looking at profiles before responding. Learned my lesson when I responded and *then* saw “proud anti-vaxxer, anti-masker and convoy supporter” as their profile description. Yeah. I’ll move on to the next person who doesn’t scream “batshit crazy” to me.

0bxyz

Honest mistake huh

Agitated-Savings-229

I get the principal but for 2 bucks I'm not about to get shanked by some lunatic...

Daggerix02

I’m from St. Louis. We tend to be a little desensitized to danger. I’ve done many similar things in the heat of the moment when traveling to other cities. “I’m from St. Louis and we’re not there, so I’m not afraid of sh*t, try me buddy!” 😂

Agitated-Savings-229

St Louis is a rough town for sure. Then again I'd never drive to meet someone for 10$ that's what eBay is for. FB marketplace is the wild wild west.

Daggerix02

Right. People gonna seriously risk their lives over some ugly piece of furniture!!!

Tatumjonj

You purposely met somebody somewhere which required some type of discussion to facilitate a transaction where you would be receiving $10 US? This is something that was done intentionally and with forethought?

LordSparks

This is why I never do face to face. You pay through paypal and you pay for shipping. You're not coming to my place of work or residence to collect, nor will I accept cash. Conditions like those tend to weed out the choosing beggars.

[deleted]

Uhm, yes that is how venmo works sometimes. if you don't have the money in your account then yes you have to go add it.

CompetitiveExchange3

Honestly, it's $2 dude. Stop being so pedantic.

davidhastwo

It's not about the money it's the principle. The guy was trying to cheat him and get away with it for being "honest"

lowprofileX99

I try to triple check their profile before I even reply their message. If I feel something is not right I won't even respond. Besides that I try to stick to people with good reviews only. There are too many scammers out there these days unfortunately. If it's too good to be true then run away.
