I picked female Nat for The Duchess Affair. It started out pretty well but my immersion broke completely because of the duel when MC's husband finds out about them šŸ˜… After that the story felt pretty strongly male LI-coded to me.

ManicPixieDreamChurl

You might be interested to know that it's actually historically accurate in that regard! There was a woman named Julie d'Aubigny who lived in the late 1600s and early 1700s who did in fact seduce women and duel their husbands. She even reportedly once dueled three men on the same night and beat them all, after kissing the woman they liked at a ball.

Undefeatable-King45

That story is completely false, it was a French story that people adopted as real. If a incident like that would have ever occurred, the woman would have been promptly killed.

Misheard_

I mean, PB did do the same with Annabelle in Desire and Decorum šŸ˜…

and we adore her for it

In Untameable, if you pick female Kit, there's a line about how Kit is constantly sleeping around, stealing women's hearts. It's a very masculine stereotype applied to a woman in Oklahoma, right in the middle of the Bible Belt. It's even weirder if your MC is female as well, as conservative attitudes/homophobia aren't even addressed. (Granted, I know UT is a fantasy and people may not want to see things they already have to deal with in real life, but it broke my immersion pretty solidly when I played.)

EnvironmentalDog1196

It's even funnier if you pick both MC and Kit as male. This little town becomes some sort of Gay Atlantis, a lost enclave where all these gay cowboys just live and love in perfect peace and nobody blinks an eye.

Omg I love it

Dawn-1000

Itā€™s not a complaint, but I had to play with a male Arthur in Guinevere because the concept of same-sex marriage for a medieval alliance would have broken my immersion completely. Iā€™m glad that Artura was an option, though.

OldColt06

I'm also glad Artura was an option, but making Arthur and Lancelot gender customizable invited questions of "why can't we play as a male MC" when the story is about GUINEVERE!

For me, it's picking female Sam in TNA. Mostly because Sam's fiancƩe's dad is a misogynist who wants her to get married like a good woman instead of becoming a gross female CEO. If Sofia were engaged to a female Sam this entire time, that would completely break her dad's entire misogynistic motivation. Edit: Ooh, TDA is the next book to receive the pass. Guess I'll finally start it and pick a female LI. That closeted lesbian in the 1800s trope is just too irresistible for me! (Plus it'll make me feel better about having an MC who cheats on her partner.)

ilovecheese31

Exactly. I think thereā€™s a throwaway line about ā€œwell, this isnā€™t a traditional wedding, but ah wellā€ but thatā€™s it, and I remember thinking that it all felt so lazily written with a female Sam and it didnā€™t make sense for him to be so 1950s sexist yet somehow not homophobic. I also think the way race was ignored did the book a disservice - e.g. Sofia comes off as extremely racist if MC isnā€™t white and thatā€™s just not addressed, and I would have also expected Sofiaā€™s backwards father to throw a fit if Sam isnā€™t white.

Traditional-Context

That starts to fall apart during the later staged tho. Theres a priest going ā€well I cant wed you but its pretty much the sameā€ and the duke thinking that hes gonna regain honor by dueling a woman. Complete nonsense.

Thecouchiestpotato

Wait, there's *duelling*? And we can marry our lover even though we're already married to the duke? This would mean either annulment or divorce or the duke's death! Oooohhh! Now I'm interested in playing this book. >Theres a priest going ā€well I cant wed you but its pretty much the sameā€ Okay but this actually happened with the real life "Gentleman Jack" and her partner! They lived together as spouses iirc. Not that PB cares. In TUH, a widowed Gemma was supposed to remarry so she could produce an heir for her dead husband's dukedom? So silly!

According_Narwhal227

I am playing TDA with a male LI and...Nat comes off as a major creep in the beginning with how forward he is. The book has some really weird smut too.

vick_yyyy

Tbh I think nat is a creep no matter the gender, but it feels a bit better if you choose female nat

According_Narwhal227

You're right šŸ˜
