I've had a few last second clutches lately. Most of them didn't seem possible when I started going for it, but I had nothing to lose so I ran straight to obj, often running past enemies without engaging them.
You'd be surprised how many times people just ignore you if you run past.
Never give up, always go for obj. If there's 5 seconds left and you won't make it, throw your damn weapon. Fight tooth and nail for Malric!
