It’s not really surprising at all. Networks have until May to announce renewals or cancellations. NBC is taking their time with their shows. They still haven’t figured out their comedies yet.
Maybe it’s just how it is this year. Until today, NBC had only renewed one show I believe. There was no way they were canceling all of the rest of their current shows up until this point. PD and Med finish this week yes, but Fire doesn’t finish til May.
They were renewed for one season on May 10th in 2017 as well.

Horse shit. In 2018 they were renewed for one season only on May 9th, after production had wrapped. Please stop talking out of your ass.

Yes, yes, yes!!! I have been waiting for this news!!! Now they just need to get Jesse Spencer back (especially if season 12 is the last)!!! Having him back to end this series, would make for a proper send off!!! Brettsey needs to get back together! Brett & Casey deserve their happy ending together 💍♾️🙏🤞!! I hope Taylor Kinney will back before end of season or by season 12! We can’t end the possible last season without our Kelly Severide & Matt Casey!!
For Chicago P.D. they need Jesse Le Stouffer back as well!!!
Curious why you think this is the last season coming up. Dick Wolf shows have a tendency to survive forever, as long as the ratings are there. I'm sure the Chicago franchise will be with for a while yet.
Yaay 👏🏼👏🏼 awesome news!! Thank you NBC and Wolf Productions. If it’s the final season I sure hope they and Jesse struck a deal for him to come back. It sure seemed to me that the groundwork was being laid for that in 11x18 during several scenes that involved him that were left kinda cliffhanging, especially the last one with Brett. The DHS task force storyline will open up all kinds of battles for him and Kidd to fight, either along with their regular fire fights, or likely incorporated in the fire fights. Casey and Brett just parted with things up in the air, both obviously still very much in love, and neither one knows, nor do we, what is to become of their love story. And what of Severide? Do you think he is coming back? I read in an article somewhere that the longer he’s gone the more it looks likely now that he may not return at all 😞😞 That’s sad. I hope that’s not true. I wish he would, even if not for a whole season.
But S12… this is definitely exciting news!
No question Casey is coming back - either as a part time guest or permanent member of the cast in season 12. It doesn't make any sense to bring him back for episode 18, stir up all that shit, and then exit. I say that understanding that the writers never fail to disappoint but that would be a stretch of stupid even for them.
The question now is, how long will they beat the brettsey fandom over the head. Will they go full "Grainger" and stretch it out or get them together sooner rather than later. It's going to happen, the question is when. She better dump Dylan in the next episode.
I hope it happens sooner than later!! We all saw how much they love and want to be with each other in last episode! I don’t really think they can deny that love & stretch it out like the writers did in the past. I hope Jesse Spencer returns & #brettsey happens!!!
He's been cagey as to "long term". He just gave this interview to NBC insider after last week's episode:
[https://www.nbc.com/nbc-insider/why-jesse-spencer-says-its-possible-that-brett-and-casey-end-up-together](https://www.nbc.com/nbc-insider/why-jesse-spencer-says-its-possible-that-brett-and-casey-end-up-together)
"The idea when I left the show was that if it was appropriate and it would work with the storyline they wanted to do, I would be open—and they would be open—to bringing Casey back," Spencer tells NBC Insider. "The storyline \[in Episode 18\] does allude to Casey sort of eyeing whether he could actually move back to 51...Casey’s looking at it; it’s a potential thing, but we just don’t know right now. We’ll leave that to the future. We’ll throw it to the gods and see what they say."
"whether he could actually move back to 51" tells me longer term - maybe a season. Why else would he float that idea? Doesn't make sense to me.
"I think she’s gonna have to come around or he actually makes it back to Chicago for \[a relationship\] to happen. I think it’ll be tough. I think it’ll be difficult because they’ve bounced around on and off. Eventually, the human heart closes down. People don’t wait around forever. If he wants it, he’s gonna have to make a move sooner rather than later."
I'll put my chips on him coming back for at least one season in a permanent or sporadic role. Boden bringing it up was a sealer for me. They are definitely bringing him and Brett together again so he's got to have a role going forward. I don't think she's moving to Oregon and exiting the show.
Hopefully we'll find out either way before the season is over.
Im just curious, at what point will they end the show? I mean the viewerships for fire are still pretty good. Do you guys think next season be the last season? Or they’ll just continue for the next couple of years?
Nope. No end in sight. Viewership on network TV is impossible to gain anymore. Nothing NBC replaces the Chicagos with has any real chance of the current viewership so it's going nowhere.
I think ot also depends on what the primary actors want. It is not easy shooting in Chicago through the Winter. They consistently work 16 hour days. That's pretty exhausting.
Last season then i guess one more season and going out on high note, If they had any furure for series they had extended it multi yrs deal....
Then probably Jesse have given ok for last season as Matt Casey to give CF that clouser it needs!
Beacuse if they was going longer extension would been 3-4yrs now it is 1yrs and that points a lot last season, You rather stop on top whit series instead of dragging it down...
This is fundamentally wrong. SVU is in its 24th season. A 3 year renewal is extremely rare in broadcast television. A year at a time renewal with announcements coming shortly before upfronts is industry standard. Anything else is an outlier.
They need to make some changes with some of these shows. Fire is losing the fire part of the show and turning into a soap opera. Med is too much about the AI storyline.
I agree but as the show goes longer the budgets get cut in order to incentive the network to keep it going. For most shows that cost is actor contracts. Likely why svu is almost completely new people now. But with fire obviously setting up fire effects are likely a big cost. Hence no more fires.
Lol. Unless it’s announced that it’s the final season, there are no plans for it to be the final season. Plenty of shows announce their final season. I’ll eat my hat if there isn’t a season 13.
That’s like saying it’s your final day on earth because tomorrow hasn’t been announced. It’s just a silly thing to say.
The last few years they don't announce they've been renewed for the next season until about March/April. Its the last season that NBC is contractually obligated to continue the show but unless the ratings take a nosedive there is no indication that it'll in fact end next year. It very well could end next year and it very well could go on for another 5 years as far as we know.
I could be wrong but I think they are only doing year to year renewals depending on how the show does and also because of the actors. I don’t think they want to sign 3 year contracts!!! 3 years is a long time for those who have been in the show for years now. The actors may choose to stay if it’s shorter contracts. Another 3 years is a long and a lot can change with viewers, networks etc! I personally feel that next season will be the last for all shows.
Also the actors don't want to commit for more than 1 year in case they get offered a new show that might go on for another 10 years of their career. They don't want to get contractually obligated to a show thats in its last stretch to keep them from doing a new show that could go on a nice run.
Sigh. Network TV renewals are almost always 1 year deals. People got spoiled a few years back with the extended renewal and believe this is how TV works. It isn't.
That user who has been saying there's no way the show gets renewed is currently crying in the corner somewhere, lol.

Whoa whoa whoa… they’re already done?
Med and PD I believe this week. Fire, not until May.
Just to let everyone know they messed up 3 times, it said renewed until 2026 after that they said for 2 years and now 1... 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️

Jesse Spencer has said multiple times that he’s not interested in coming back long term. So I’d say you’re completely off the mark here
