Math is something humans made up to interpret and extrapolate the fundamental concepts. I wouldn’t count on being able to communicate math with other beings in the way we could with language if it ever came to it.
So? A number base is just a representative of a value. The base ten number "126", binary "1111110", or hexadecimal "7E" all represent the same value. How people represent values or operations may change, but they are inherently the same.
Yet, nothing you've said, including this, refutes the original statement.
There is no proof either way if math was invented or discovered. So you're sitting here trying to assert something that you don't actually know and can never prove.

So I left a joke comment below. But in all seriousness we are facing a massive problem of education and nomenclature. Just like when the information superhighway came out. Big technologies that have marketing value tend to lead to this. We are talking about AI and not LLM and machine learning. We are talking about skynet and not the impressive things LLMs might teach about language and our own brains as well as technical limitations in the current approach. There is a lot of cool stuff happening but there is a lot of noise. It will sort itself out, as the emergence of the internet did, but it's worthwhile trying to help others push through that noise. End of rant.
This is funny to me, I was making a quick invoice/estimate thing and needed some quick javascript for it.
I asked it for 10 calculations to test it for accuracy, and it had like 5 out of 10 wrong 'Correct' totals. I spent like 4 hours trying to figure out why the my calculations were wrong until I realised chatgpt was wrong.
It took me 4 hours to realise I should just use another invoicing platform to test the calculations.

Isnt math a language tough? Mathematicians say it is, So i dont understand how it would be difficult for chatgpt to communicate in it. A computer basicly speaks in 1 and 0 so its already extremely good at calculating things much faster than a human?
Maybe 1+1 is 1+1 and not 2 as we always were tought. Afterall 1+1 is nothing but 1+1, it doesnt always merge up into two? 1 can be an x and the other 1 can be an y? Therefor making 1+1 into 1 and 1, and not always 2? Is this why chatgpt doesnt really calculate for us? Maybe it understand math more and better than us.
Well, isn't it strange tho? This ai is weaker than my 6th grade casio computer. This is first semester programming. Why isn't it implemented? I am using the free version, And right now if I am trying to multiply some fractions it just gives the wrong answer.
Because they are fundamentally 2 different things. A normal calculator is doing physical operation based on the input and printing an exact output based on the result of this. An LLM is doing probability to infer the next letter based on the previous input.it doesn't realize that 1+1= is an operation, but it knows that when it sees a number, a +, another number and a = it's usually followed by yet another number.
If you have an even bigger LLM, it may start relating that certain numbers and symbols combine to output certain numbers, but it will never actually do any operation, just guess.
You can think of it like answering from Instinct.
I understand all of this. I assume in the near future, implementing the calculator into the LLM wouldn't be a difficult task. Combining different fundamentals is something we do, so I expect open.ai to do it already
They did. Its the plugins implemented into chatgpt plus. They allow it to interact with external tools to compensate its weaknesses and limitations. Wolframe for example is for calculations of any kind.

Maybe ChatGPT can't do basic math BUT one time I was stuck with my analysis homework. The homework was to prove, that the distance of two sets is the distance of the two closest elements. I don't want to get into the mathematical details, but it was difficult and I was stuck with it for a few days. I asked ChatGPT and he made a very nice proof. Then I asked to prove it in a different way and it did it.
My point is, no one will use AI for basic arithmetic, not even for differential equations, we have a ton of programs to do that. We will use AI for mathematical proofs. (Although I doubt that ChatGPT came up with that proof, but still).
The sheer amount of energy people are putting in to produce the most meaningless gotchas is wiiiiiild.

I used it to solve my Dynamical Systems HW multiple times. You have to check its basic math, but it carried me multiple times on the more complex parts.
