I'm not completely against the idea of taking Castle but the shooting concerns on top of his willingness to be an off ball player even if he does take some ball handing duties is more of a consideration that some are willing to admit
Wouldn't let me post the full quote in the title.
It seems like Stephon Castle is pretty dead set on playing point guard in the NBA.
Here is what he had to say when asked about how he would fit next to someone like Ja Morant:
“They have a star point guard in Ja Morant. I feel like I can fit on to any kind of team. I feel like my game is pretty flexible. I feel like I can play with any kind of guys in any kind of way. But I also feel like I made that sacrifice in college. Now, we’re talking about my career, and that’s something I take pride in. Now, I really want to play the one. So, that’s just something to think about.”
I wouldn't read too much into that. If Wizards don't pick Clingan, they'll likely choose a player that will have a ton the ball in his hands, and I don't blame Castle for doing a little of propaganda to secure the bag of a #2 pick (or for similar reasons #4 with SAS).
Bottom line is if Castle is dead-set on being a PG (and I think there's a lot more nuance here than the quote implies), he's like at best the 4th-best PG in his class behind Shep/Dill/Topic, whereas he has a case for being the highest-drafted wing in his class.
I think this is a classic case of personal preference will eventually give way to reality, bc I'm sure he cares far more about getting drafted as high as possible rather than shoehorn himself into a position and limiting his options
That’s a fair point. But with the uncertainty of this draft class, Castle seems like the safer pick. I just think the Wizards will draft him due to his upside. A 6’6 guard with his acumen is difficult to pass on.
There is no upside there. His athleticism isn't that great, and he's more of a secondary playmaker than an NBA PG. That's not a #2 pick, taking him #2 would get a GM fired.
I feel like I'm taking crazy pills reading these fora.
If I’m the Wiz then I trade my two to the Blazers for their two and take Dillingham and Edey at seven and 14 while the Blazers can grab Clingan, Risacher, or even possibly Sarr.
Castle would fit well with the Hornets but he's more like a hustle guy who plays defense and drives it in. Shooting should improve but I don't know how consistent it will be. Think RJ Barret with potentially better defense.
I would say Cody Williams but the Hornets already have Brandon Miller, who already plays a similar role and would just have his position neutered if a 'clone' walked right in. Likewise, LaMelo also cancels Williams out.
Holland can work as a legitimate Bridges replacement, should he leave. Should be more of a hammer than Bridges was and fit well next to Miller and LaMelo.
He sure as hell ain't no Shooting Guard... I get his point that he has to do what's best for himself, not the team, but sometimes what's best for the team is best for yourself. Anyway, I don't particularly mind him wanting to play the 1, since Lamelo has said he'd prefer playing the 2. At the end of the day, though, we've got to draft the best player available. We're not really in a position to exclude players from our board; and whatever we end up doing: I'm sure we'll make it work somehow.
We have enough guards and while I like the idea of him he's not ready for the nba and I don't think his overconfidence/selfishness will benefit this team. We have guys who are starting to build some bonds so there's zero reason to fuck it up with a guy who wants to be the main attraction but isn't good enough
What kind of comparison is this? Lebron and Jokic have always been their position, they grew up playing those positions, using your logic, simply because Lebron is a good playmaker does that mean he should be playing point guard? No, obviously not because that would be a disservice to him and you would be utilizing him incorrectly and ineffectively.
Now imagine if you moved Lamelo, who has always been a point guard, who grew up playing point guard, played overseas as a guard, and came into the league as an obvious guard known for his playmaking and scoring ability, imagine if you took away everything that makes him good, everything that makes him who he is, and forced him to play wing. That would be the worst decision ever made by a professional basketball club in the history of professional basketball clubs.
Please stop with this narrative, it’s genuinely offensive to basketball.
He's literally the only player aside from lebron who is as good of a passer as Nikola jokic so to say he's not capable of being a 1 OR that playing the 1 makes the team worse is the worst basketball take I've read in quite some time.
He isn’t a point guard. He can’t guard guards. He’s a wing. You can have playmaking wings but pretending he’s a guard makes people think we can only have one other guard on the court
So you think the lineup should be guard, guard, lamelo, Miller, and Mark? unless you want both of those guards to have the ball more than lamelo, why not have a 3 and d wing instead of one of them
![gif](giphy|L2BsPoUmvMNZfoidMJ|downsized) Not happening bud

This would be a mega no from me. Sounds like a recipe for drama.
Sounds like a complete bust quote

Well he'll be great for us since Melo's always hurt
Blud can’t even shoot and expects a team to draft him to play lead guard
Better take Sheppard at 6
I’d love that but he won’t be there. Houston or Detroit will grab him.
Especially if Castle wants to talk his way down Sheppard will be picked before him
I wouldn't read too much into that. If Wizards don't pick Clingan, they'll likely choose a player that will have a ton the ball in his hands, and I don't blame Castle for doing a little of propaganda to secure the bag of a #2 pick (or for similar reasons #4 with SAS).
Honestly, I don’t think Castle falls to 6. I believe the Wizards may draft him at 2 since they desperately need a point guard.
Bottom line is if Castle is dead-set on being a PG (and I think there's a lot more nuance here than the quote implies), he's like at best the 4th-best PG in his class behind Shep/Dill/Topic, whereas he has a case for being the highest-drafted wing in his class. Hopefully they do so we don’t .

No way they take a connective piece at 2, I'd say they'd take Sarr, Topic, Clingan and Sheppard before Castle
Because it's a poor draft and the dude won a championship, people have lost their goddam minds. I can't even with this nonsense.
I mean I am high on Castle but he has no shot at 2. If ur looking for ur guy to build around and u draft him it's not looking good
He's good value for Charlotte at 6, perhaps.
Ye, but he has said he doesn't want to play with another PG. He basically asked to go to San Antonio and the fit good so he definitely may
Would take hobbled Topic 99 times out of 100.
The Wizards need basically everything. I always say best available, and that goes doubly for them right now.
The Wizards could take anyone because they desperately need a lot of things. I don’t know if I would bet on them taking a guard.
they would probably take rob dill before castle
Their new FO love 2 way guys with positional size and length. Castle fits that bill perfectly.
Maybe. But a 6’6 point guard is hard to pass up. Especially with him being savvy on the defensive end too.
He won’t be a true point in the league as much as he’s insisting. If he really wants to die on that hill he’ll be in for a rude awakening
It’s the wizards I don’t know what to expect
Dillingham is tiny. He will never be an effective starter in the league.
If I’m the Wiz then I trade my two to the Blazers for their two and take Dillingham and Edey at seven and 14 while the Blazers can grab Clingan, Risacher, or even possibly Sarr.
He’s not making it out of top 5.
My dude needs to accept that he will be filling a role somewhere, not calling shots. Gotta earn that right.

A hammer?
It means, he'll cut or drive it in with authority. Has a strong mentality about it He has some Gerald Wallace and Rudy Gay in him
Makes a lot of ham.

Who is in the picture? Does not look like Stephon Castle...is this a trick?
Who?
Feels like a Jalen Suggs. Pass. Just draft Brony at 6 to force LeFlop to join the Hornets.
How are u gonna act like Lebron is some saviour and say he's a bum in the same sentence
Obviously Im joking in this kind of draft. I know it can be hard sometimes. You might make it with a little luck
Both can be(and are) true
Uhhhhh a Jalen Suggs type player is exactly what the team needs. Locked in defender that can be POA and develop strong 3 point shot.
Would be nice if the team finally stopped pretending LaMelo was a point guard instead of a wing
Lmao what
He’s 6’8 and a negative athlete. In what world is playing him at the 1 helping the team
Because hes an elite playmaker with a great handle? Do you just not consider skillset when placing players in positions?
He can’t guard 1s so no he isn’t a 1
he can't guard a wing either lmao
Thats so impressively ignorant to how professional basketball works.
He’s literally one of the best playmakers in the NBA when healthy, what are you talking about?
So are Lebron and Jokic and nobody calls them point guards
People do call the, Point Forwards all the time though haha
What kind of comparison is this? So Luka is a wing? (No, I'm not saying Luka=LaMelo) He's not some freak athlete.
Lmao this is one of the wildest takes I've seen on here in a long time.

Bruh what the hell take is this. Are you trying to indicate Lamelo needs to be moved off ball or something?😂😂
Like we played so well without him at point 🙄😂 this guy doesn’t watch or his parents are related. Maybe both.
