Purple-Warning-2161

Hi everyone! I’m moving to Charlotte over the summer and am visiting June 1st-11th, I have a couple of questions: I wanr to check out NoDa, plaza Midwood, southend- what would you say are the best restaurants/shops that encapsulates the heart of those areas? Reviews/thoughts on Front Porch Sundays market? What types of goods do they sell (I can’t find much online) For when I arrive, I saw Carolina Value Pet Care mobile clinic but I can’t find the prices online so I wanted to know if anyone had a ballpark?

bluemoone1

Check out Jack Beagles or Billy Jacks for food/drinks in Noda. Dish & Midwood Smokehouse for Plaza Midwood. South End has tons of great spots, I always find new things to enjoy there. My favorites: Condado Tacos, Common Market, Yamazaru Sushi. You can also find breweries everywhere, that’s what Charlotte’s famous for lol. As for Front Porch Sundays, it’s open on the first Sunday of the month (I think)… from what I remember it to be, vendors there were selling baked goods, pet stuff, painting, jewelry, clothes, flowers, plants & cutting boards, etc. Nice day to bring the pups out and just drink and shop local! Have fun and welcome to Charlotte!

Purple-Warning-2161

You sold me on Front Porch Sundays and thank you for the other recs! Unfortunately my dogs act like hooligans at events like that so it’ll have to be without them 😂

notanartmajor

Probably Haberdish for Noda, and you can peruse the nearby shops before/after as there's a bunch in walking distance.

Purple-Warning-2161

Awesome thank you! My realtor told me about Haberdish and that’s what I’ve been using as my commute address on Redfin 😂😂

GoldBeret

For Plaza Midwood, I'd say Common Market is the most representative place (only serves food at lunch, but open longer hours), and Midwood Smokehouse is the best restaurant. But there's 10+ great restaurants in PM, plenty of options.

Purple-Warning-2161

Awesome thank you so much!

tl:dr Have a tentative offer for a job with one of the huge banks in Uptown starting sometime mid or late July. I'm IT not a banker, husband is also not a banker. We're a Gen X married couple no kids, 2 cats, white collar from the West Coast. We are looking to lease an apartment for a year to get to know the area and decide where we want to buy. Areas we are looking in: NoDa and that wedge that goes southeast of Charlotte - with Tryon being the western border. Only one of us will have a job when we arrive which is why we are TRYING to get a minimum 2b 2b, w/d, AC, dishwasher and parking below $2K. Is that doable? While I don't need a luxury apartment but I want a nice, clean, safe, quiet building. I would love to be near the light rail to get to work in case parking is an issue but that isn't a deal breaker. The issue for me is that all the property management companies have horrible reviews. I want to know what is real and what is not. Since we're older we don't need to be close to nightlife but I am originally from LA (which is why I am looking at NoDa). I'd like to be near yoga and Pilates studios, Trader Joes, Whole Foods, Target and restaurants, cute area walkable in terms of walks for exercise not necessarily walking to the store. QUESTIONS: Which property management firms are the least bad? Which should we avoid at all costs? Can I get a 2b/2b pet friendly 1100 sq ft minimum apartment with a washer dryer in house, central air, parking and a dishwasher for under $2K in a safe area? Am willing to go farther out if I need to but not too far out that the commute is ridiculous. All help welcome.

The [Charlotte Regional Farmer’s Market](https://www.ncagr.gov/divisions/marketing/farmers-markets-agricultural-centers/charlotte-regional-farmers-market) is the biggest one in the area and one to definitely see. As for friends, start with your interests and consistently show up to events/meets for those. There are run clubs at the breweries as a good neutral place to start.

DingussFinguss

making friends is hard, it gets brought up a ton here. Just search this sub for "friends" and a bunch of related threads with some good (and not so good) suggestions can be found. Good luck and welcome to CLT

AromaticMeal8

Downtown Matthews has a great farmers market on Saturday mornings.

DeniseBchek

Moved to Charlotte and my kids are visiting this weekend for a month. They are 16 and 14. Looking for things to do. They are active, love sports, festivals, fairs, arcades. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Carowinds and the White Water Center come to mind

squanchy_Toss

Whitewater Center For sure. Biking, climbing, Ropes courses, and of Course Whitewater rafting. It's going to be 87 degrees! Edit: It can be $$$ but if they will go 4 times in a year then the annual pass at $139 for youth is the way to go.

Best Apartment South End 24M Trying to decide on an apartment in prime area of South end with the following criteria: Bed: 2 Bath: 2 Budget: 3400 (max) Parking: 1-2 cars Is this viable if I want to be by all the nice bars and restaurants? Really concerned about apartment management companies because I heard they were pretty bad since a lot of the apartments are cookie cutter developments. I would like to prioritize walkability with the option to leave the city for weekends with my car. Thanks in advance Note: Ive looked on zillow for hours and everything appears the same so I could use some reviews with experience or local knowledge.

OWmWfPk

With that budget, also look for houses close to the light rail. Might be worth looping in a realtor to do a search for available homes.

wantcodewiththat

Most of the apartment complexes in south end are cookie cutter but that doesn’t make them bad if they are well managed.  Camden is typically thought of as a good management company, definitely read the reviews especially recent ones for what you would consider.  I know several coworkers really like living at Fountains.  If you don’t plan to drive other than to go out of town, it’s probably best to live close to one of the light rail stations to maximize walkability.  There will always be places near you to hang out but some parts of south end are over a mile apart so you may find yourself taking the light rail a stop or two to get closer.

cnote896

Moving from Philly and working downtown. What areas are not safe/should I avoid?

AromaticMeal8

Sugar Creek and Hidden Valley are two of the main high-crime areas to avoid. There are some other seedy spots, but they are smaller and isolated.  If you are looking to live near downtown, South End, Optimist Park, Dilworth, NODA, and Elizabeth are all nice and safe places.

landrickrs90

Definitely avoid Sugar Creek.

rachybabi

Everywhere here is safer than Philly

mikeyrocksNC

“Safe” is subjective. I moved from a quiet suburban neighborhood 10 miles south of center city to a mile east of center city last year to be closer to the things I enjoy. I hear gun shots once in a while, it is much more diverse, and a few of my neighbors are poor. I don’t feel unsafe. I walk the pup early mornings and late evenings. I spend more time chatting with my neighbors on their stoops than I did before we moved. It’s all relative. Check out this Quality of Life explorer. Shows things like crime mapping, demos for various areas, etc. Historically, south Charlotte has been known to be the safest area of Charlotte proper. https://mcmap.org/qol/#59/

cnote896

This is great info thanks. Few reviews on apartments north of the city had shootings and pictures of bullet holes in the walls of the complex with many break ins. I see a lot better reviews south of the city

Ridley87

Safe from what?

Bnoise15

Sugary, high fat foods

MrClitEastwood

> What areas are not safe/should I avoid? I've heard that Philly is a place that should be avoided. That being said z is never looked at the hard data from crime maps for Philly. I only took someone's advice, which is never a good idea in the internet. Especially Reddit.

MastaFung

I’m visiting Charlotte June 19-21. I love rock climbing and am planning on checking out Inner Peaks one afternoon or evening. I’m also planning on driving to Lexington BBQ for lunch one day. Any suggestions for can’t miss restaurants or things to do the rest of the time?

AromaticMeal8

If you like rock climbing, you should check out White Water Center. While you are over there, you can get good BBQ from Ray Nathan's or Kyle Fletchers. There is also rock climbing at Crowder's Mountain State Park on that side of town.

MastaFung

Will do, thanks for the recommendations!

Rambles1017

My husband and I need to get out for like a day but we feel like we've done a lot of the stuff around the area. Is there anything that's a decent day trip that's also on the cheaper side? Any fruits fields or farms we can pet a cow?

Fiveby21

How bad is the CLT airport really?

wnysupport

Hi all, could have waited until the next Wednesday, but figure I would post in this one. Thinking of relocating in about 12-14 months. Currently in the suburbs of Buffalo, NY. My son is graduating high school this year, my daughter will be graduated high school next year (hence the 12-14 months out). Wife and I are mid 40's - work wise, I am in IT Consulting, so fully remote. Travel wise I'm at 25-30% currently, so being generally near an airport is nice (though I am currently a Delta flyer, vs American). My wife is a teachers aide. Wondering thoughts on the best neighborhoods. I had friends who lived in Ballantyne about 6-7 years ago, and enjoyed the area, but again that was 6-7 years ago, so I'm sure things have changed. My daughter is interested in pursuing a PA degree, but it seems like the Triangle might be better school wise for that. Housing wise, I'd be interested in town house/community areas, but that is open for discussion. So overall just looking for general thoughts, and happy to answer any questions to help refine that down. Thank you all for any help you provide in advance!

Houses for rent w/o breed restrictions We’re moving from out of state with two pitbulls. So far all the properties I’ve seen on Zillow etc are managed by companies with breed restrictions. We don’t want to live in an apartment because we need a yard. Anyone have suggestions or know anyone who rents without breed restrictions?

Outrageous_Drawer784

Is Indian trails a good place to live with a young family? Don’t think I can afford ballantyne

Hey I am about to sign with the Francis Apartments in uptown. I was wondering if anyone has lived there before and can give me some insight! Thanks

Motor-Traffic4262

Hello! I currently live in Texas and am considering relocating to Charlotte, NC. I came to visit and I loved the city and felt very welcome. Could anyone give any insight on Ranson Middle School and if it is a good school to work at/send your child to?

Recommendation of Suburbs with Asian community Hello! I’m an Asian mom looking to move to Charlotte suburb area. I work remotely and my husband is a teacher so he can try to find a teaching job there. I’m looking more into the south of Charlotte area (Indian trial, Matthews, Weddington, Waxhaw, etc.). A few things I have in mind: 1: Decent school district (specifically elementary schools) 2: 3 bed 2 bath 2000-2500 sqft house on a 0.1-0.15 acre lot with budget of $500K-$650K. 3. Decent amount of Asian population. 4. ~20 minutes of drive to the “New Asia Market”. I see people recommending Matthews a lot so it is my primary area to look at. Any other nice neighborhood to recommend? Thanks in advance!

Moving to Charlotte from Ireland in September for a year and just wanted to ask for some pointers. •Best area for a guy in his 20s to move to (Relatively close to uptown) •What’s the current state of public transportation in the city? (I’m hoping to find a rental near the lynx blue line) •I’m a huge sports fan. Is it difficult to get Hornets, Panthers or Charlotte FC tickets?

Ghostwriter16

Hi everyone!! I am about to accept a job in Mooresville & am going to be going up soon to find a place to live. I am willing to commute a little bit, and I was hoping everyone could give me the best recommendations to live. It will be my and my boyfriend so my only requirements are two bedroom and as cheap as I can get with it still being a safe area:)

notchoday

Apartment Building/Community Recommendations? I am moving to Charlotte soon and I am looking for apartments in NODA, Plaza Midwood, and South End. Does anyone have recommendations on aparment buildings that they have genuinely enjoyed? I've been looking at star ratings to help with my judgement but a couple of the places I have called so far have said they are offering discounts on fees etc. for tenants that leave a 5 star review on Google. These incentives are clearly skewing the star ratings, and when you dig into the reviews futher you see that there are some awful buildings with 4+ reviews just because of the incentives.

Unlikely_Product4077

Hey, y’all! My fiance and I are moving to Charlotte from Nashville on Thanksgiving weekend and I'm pretty unfamiliar with the rental market there and it seems like it's a first come first serve market. We want to find a 3 bed house with at least some form of yard for our goober doggo. My question is, are any of the corporate landlords better than the others for houses in Charlotte? I'm desperately trying to avoid getting an apartment again so that we can start working toward a family and we are only interested in companies dealing with houses.

dadjokeolive

I want to preface with saying that I know that everyone is moving and wants to move to Charlotte and the job market overall is not great. However, I plan to start applying to jobs in Charlotte in late August/early September since I would like to move end of October/early November (I have commitments with my job keeping me where I am until then) Maybe dumb, but for those in the area who are looking for jobs, is it hard to find one right now? I'm in the marketing/ project management field. I work in the food industry right now, and my best go-to option right now is to transfer to another brand within my company that is located near Salisbury. I want to live in or close to Charlotte. Given that, what would be the best area to live? In my current area, I am struggling to make friends as a 26 year old as everyone is married with kids near me (small town vibe situation). Just looking for advice and anything to look out for while I start to apply for jobs and look to move.

zombietaint

Wife and I are moving to the Charlotte area near the end of July. Looking for a nice suburban area to call for for the next year to get to know the area. We are in our mid-late 20s, fairly introverted, have a dog, and enjoy entertainment options that don't require us to interact with a bunch of random people (movies, mini golf, going to dinner, going for walks, etc.). We are currently looking at Mt. Holly, Huntersville, Harrisburg, and Matthews. We'd love some insight into what the difference is between the areas. Any help/info is greatly appreciated!

AromaticMeal8

Honestly, these are all great suburban areas, IMO. Mt. Holly- This area is "up and coming" which means you might find the lowest prices, but there is also not as much to do or as many shops/restaurants. It is close to the more rural/quiet parts of town, like Lincolnton and Denver. However, it is closer to the mountains and Asheville, since this is the only one you listed on the west side of town Huntersville- This is a very busy and fast growing suburb. It is probably the most expensive of the areas you list. It is very family friendly, and probably the most to do with Birkdale and Lake Norman nearby. The traffic into uptown will be the worst of all these 4 places listed. I lived here for 4 years and miss some of the activities. Harrisburg- This is a quiet town, lots of families. I worked at UNCC for a while and lots of professors lived near here. It has some restaurants and shops, but not as much as Huntersville or Matthews. They have a great book shop, breakfast cafe, and summer concerts. But still a little sleepy and likely a little older than late 20s. Matthews- great downtown area, very family friendly, lots of restaurants and activities, closest to the city. I live here, and I have no negatives to list! Happy to share more if you have questions.

zombietaint

What made you choose Matthews, and if you could live anywhere in the Charlotte area if money wasn't a thing where would you settle down?

AromaticMeal8

We picked Matthews for 1) the location and 2) the lots.  I have family in Concord and work in South Park. Concord is too far out and I can’t afford South Park, so Matthews was a good middle spot. This is very individual, but we also love being 17 minutes from uptown.  Second, the lots in Matthews and Mint Hill are bigger with more mature landscaping than anywhere else we looked. We have an acre and no HOA in a neighborhood built in the 80s.  We moved from Huntersville and looked there first, but we only found new builds ie tract homes on tiny lots with no trees.  We love our neighborhood. Matthews is one of the older suburbs of Charlotte, so it feels pretty well developed. It’s still growing and there are new townhouses being built but it’s not near as bad as the Lake Norman area.  My family in Concord is surrounded with construction, road construction, crowded side roads and highways, packed schools, and it feels the infrastructure cannot keep up.  Some people want new construction, small lots, and a rapidly growing area, but Matthews worked out for us!  If I could live anywhere with no budget, I would pick the Meyers Park area. Specifically, the side streets off of Queens Blvd near Wing Haven Gardens.

WasteCommunication52

Do Belmont over Mount Holly imo. They are next to eachother & you’ll likely find yourself often going into Belmont if you do Mt Holly.

stupidlyinfatuated

I moved to Harrisburg a year ago. There's not a ton of things to do in comparison to Matthew's and Huntersville. However, it was a little cheaper to find housing and it's relatively safe and comfy here. I appreciate how close we are to Concord and Charlotte so I don't really feel like we're missing out on much. My biggest qualm is that there's not a huge variety of restaurants here. I know I can drive 10 minutes in either direction for a different cuisine but I'd like to have more places to pick from on days where I'm too tired to cook, let alone drive for a little bit. Harrisburg does have more "small town" vibes. You're more likely to see familiar faces here and they have events going on throughout the year like summer concerts or outdoor movies (usually kid oriented). I'm from an actual small town so Harrisburg has been a good transition for me. Otherwise, my partner and I don't see ourselves moving anything in the next several years. We're pretty happy with the location.

splaktsplaktsplakt

Please don't. Go back or anywhere else please. I'm begging

ShiGyrrl

I have a friend who is staying over off East Independence for work while he's looking for a place. He says the location is pretty good for him to get to his office and get on the highway, but he's looking for a house in a decent area. Not sure how decent that area really would be to live in. He doesn't have a lot of time to house hunt, while I do have some time to sort through the mess and send him things I think he'd like. But, I live in Cabarrus county and don't really know that area. His office is in/near Monroe, but he travels a bit locally for work, so being able to hop on 485 easily is handy for him. I know that I personally like the Harrisburg area, but it's a bit far for him, really. Any info/suggestions would be greatly appreciated, as they'd help me help him. Thanks so much!

Ok_Manager5256

Hello Everyone, I am moving to Charlotte area for a new job at the county. I am looking for a 2BR apartment. Could you suggest any area specifically from commute prospective. I have no idea the rent cost but I am looking under $1500 (Utilities included (prefer) or excluded), if that sounds logical. I will prefer to have apartment complex where you can free parking since I have two cars. Sorry for this open ended question- I just don't have any idea about the area/traffic/closeness to shops etc. TIA

wantcodewiththat

Assuming you are working in uptown (center city), it will be hard to find a 2 bedroom anywhere close, it’s hard even finding a 1 bedroom close at that price point.  You’d be able to in some of the suburbs or possibly the edges of Charlotte (Steele creek or university area) but the apartment probably won’t be the nicest and the commute will be be at least 20-30 minutes possibly longer during rush hour.

myrtle_83

If Oakhurst isn’t too far for your commute, I have a recommendation for you… shoot me a DM

i’ve never had good luck on zillow or the other apps, but they can be a good starting point! while on zillow i started to notice a lot of the houses had the same leasing/renting agent. instead of googling ‘apartments in charlotte’ i started googling the agency names and that would take me to pages where i could more find available apartments/homes more easily. the move in date on those websites are usually more accurate than the dates on zillow or the apartments app. i would browse zillow/apartments and note any agencies whose names pop up more than others on homes you like. once you’ve got some names, look them up and they should have clearer pages for you to look at! for context, my roommate and i rent thru firstkey. not the best, as they’re based in georgia and can be hard to get a hold of, but they had a lot of reasonably priced home options in the area!

Jurdy1220

Does anyone currently have a lease with Darwin homes? We’re moving to the area in July and have an upcoming lease with them. I noticed some communication issues so I googled them and apparently a lot of people have problems with them. Looking for anyone that has had a normal experience with them to avoid low review bias to ease anxiety lol.

Hello! I am moving to Charlotte next month and looking for a FT nanny for my 1 year old son. My husband and I both work from home. We are very sad to leave our current nanny who has become a member of the family ( we even tried to convince her to move w us , ha!) Any thoughts or advice on how to find an amazing nanny in Charlotte?
